I've been teaching for over twenty years, and I've never seen anyone articulate musical ideas for guitar in words and playing as well as Paul Gilbert. I learn something every time I watch a Paul Gilbert video. Brilliant!
Had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman about 10 years ago. I worked on a Mr. Big music video in a recording studio in LA. It was a small crew of about 4 people and the guys were all top class musicians and wonderful people. No egos, great sense of humor, and very approachable. Legends. RIP Pat.
@@uniauther13 With an icing coating of years of experience and applications. In many ways, the modern PG, is a descaled version of his 80's need to burn for impression.
samrockw22 Paul is one of my favourite guitar 🎸 players ! And a living Legendary muso !! Probably one of the greatest guitar 🎸 players of all time ! 😨😰🤦🏻♂️
He taught Brian Carroll. If y'all know, y'all know. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but hearing Buckethead talk about his parents driving him to guitar lessons with Paul, and how much he changed his life, is pretty fuckin heavy. Hearing Satchel from 'Steel Panther' talk about living in the spare room when Paul went on the road with 'Mr. Big' is epic as well. Just a great man, who happens to be one of the greatest and most inspirational guitar players/guitar teachers of all time.
yea, oddly enough, many young talented shredders are bad at phrasing. they basically try to go and hit the notes really really fast and ignore the phrasing. speed isn't everything
Maggy Frog that’s why Angus Young was always one of my favorites. He never shredded, but that man could groove a guitar solo like no other. Everything he plays sounds so simple, but when you learn his stuff the feel is just awesome.
I love Paul Gilberts "think like a drummer" approach to guitar. He references this in many of his videos. And when you listen to him play, he really treats the guitar like a percussion instrument just as much as a melody instrument.
When I was a teenager I saw Racer X in Hollywood and was able to get on to the back of the stage and actually sit on top of one of Paul's cabinets with my buddy beside me for about 3 songs before we were kicked off! I think it damaged my ears but it was totally worth it! Paul is amazing. One of the most mind-blowing guitarists ever and now I see he's an amazing teacher, too. This makes me smile and want to play along with all of his lessons. Thank you, Paul. You're the best!
Being a drummer/percussionist has helped tremendously. It's getting the hands to find the right notes/string to make the music I hear in my head that's the problem.
Do it, I joined his school and picked guitar back up again after 10 years of not playing and ive progressed more in 4 months than the 4 years I played last time
Great lesson. Too many musicians, myself included, just take rhythmic content for granted. We practice hours a day learning our scales, arpeggios, chords, etc., but if it doesn’t have a rhythm you can’t make music. I had a guitar teacher that had me use flash cards. Each card has a one bar phrase written on it. He had me shuffle them and randomly lay them out in a sentence. First tap out the rhythm, then play notes in a phrase to match the rhythm. Very helpful in getting the creative side working.
There are a lot of great tutors out there, I find myself coming back to Paul all the time, even after years of playing, his advice is always refreshing and gets me back on track.
I always wondered why i felt like my phrasing could use an improvement. This video taught me the improvements i need to make in my phrasing. Thank you paul gilbert.
Had teachers for years that tried to teach me improvisation. Paul comes along with a ten minute videos and nails it! I totally understood it know, the basics at least i mean^^
I'm clapping my hand with applause as I watch this lesson about the bongos as rhythm, rudiments. As I try to explain this to other guitarist they are perplexed....The is the way I've always though of my way of creating melodies in my solos, also with the use of my "giant finger" the "feel" of the sound, unexplainable, are tone and vibrato, but the very essence of a beautiful guitar solo....
You know this guy is doing something right, when you notice that your right foot is tapping all along with the rhythm until you realise it half way thru the video.
Back in ‘89 I think it was my band did a show with Racer-X at a place called The Mason Jar in Arizona and it was a pleasure to see him play then and it’s even more so to see him play now. I’ll never forget right before they went into their David Bowie cover of ‘Moonage Daydream’ the singer said “My mom wrote this... on acid.” And of course ‘Scarified’ rocked my socks off.
Weird thought that there may be youngsters stumbling across this great RUclips teacher without knowing who he is! I'm lucky to have seen Mr Big at Sheffield City Hall 1990-ish :)
One of the best, should say the best video ever on phrasing which for most of us loser guitar players is like a mystery and we all sound just like running scales.
Fantastic lesson!!!! So glad I found this lesson. Claus Levin guys also has knows about the importance of rhythm, he has an amazing course called Origin.. Do your self a favour and look it up! Big ups Paul G!
He is using a heavier gauge string to get that thick tone. Definitely those strings are not lite. At least they don’t sound lite to me. Paul is a wonderful guitar teacher. He’s taught me tons over the years.
Rohina Street Band Yessir! Many guitarists that are known for their ripping solos are actually phenomenal rhythm players. And it’s their rhythms that actually satisfy my guitar jones. Stevie of course. Two others that come to mind is Eddie Van Halen and Nuno Bettencourt.
Be like water. -Bruce Lee.
Be like a bongo player. -Paul Gilbert.
Hahahaha!! Good one!!
no that was Ali
Be or not to be, water, bongos, guitar player maybe ...
What's your skin color, yellow?
Yeeeesss hahaha
I've been teaching for over twenty years, and I've never seen anyone articulate musical ideas for guitar in words and playing as well as Paul Gilbert. I learn something every time I watch a Paul Gilbert video. Brilliant!
well there is a reason why he is one of the best guitarist in the world
Paul Gilbert is not only one of the best players in the world but is also a talented teacher.
Try this man. m.ruclips.net/video/p4GeyZw4k_4/видео.html
Agreed, I think it’s because he really understands what he’s doing, Theory / Skill.
And... Bongo Player apparently ;D

Paul Gilbert is so amazing. You can just see in this video he still has the child-like love of guitar.
@@uniauther13 With an icing coating of years of experience and applications. In many ways, the modern PG, is a descaled version of his 80's need to burn for impression.
The man absolutely loves what he does, that is what makes him so great IMO.
samrockw22 Paul is one of my favourite guitar 🎸 players ! And a living Legendary muso !! Probably one of the greatest guitar 🎸 players of all time ! 😨😰🤦🏻♂️
All of my favorite players never lost the rapt excitement we all had the first time. I still love to play 20 years on, but not like Paul.
He taught Brian Carroll. If y'all know, y'all know. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but hearing Buckethead talk about his parents driving him to guitar lessons with Paul, and how much he changed his life, is pretty fuckin heavy. phrasing is simply the part where most musicians fail...so yes it is the hardest part off all
yea, oddly enough, many young talented shredders are bad at phrasing. they basically try to go and hit the notes really really fast and ignore the phrasing. speed isn't everything
m.ruclips.net/video/p4GeyZw4k_4/видео.html try this.
Maggy Frog that’s why Angus Young was always one of my favorites. He never shredded, but that man could groove a guitar solo like no other. Everything he plays sounds so simple, but when you learn his stuff the feel is just awesome.
Great teacher. Like a guitar yoda
He is a Goda
I love Paul Gilberts "think like a drummer" approach to guitar. He references this in many of his videos. And when you listen to him play, he really treats the guitar like a percussion instrument just as much as a melody instrument.
I'm trying to play Guitar listening his lecture. 🎸
When I was a teenager I saw Racer X in Hollywood and was able to get on to the back of the stage and actually sit on top of one of Paul's cabinets with my buddy beside me for about 3 songs before we were kicked off! paul has such a great attitude for teaching. very friendly and soft spoken while being articulate in his explanations
still one of the best teachers and guitarists on the planet.
Being a drummer/percussionist has helped tremendously. It's getting the hands to find the right notes/string to make the music I hear in my head that's the problem.
This is probably the best piece of advice I ever could have received at this time in my playing.
Paul motivates me to give it a go again
Do it, I joined his school and picked guitar back up again after 10 years of not playing and ive progressed more in 4 months than the 4 years I played last time
How did u join his school?
sumit p it's online, you probably just pay a fee and it enrolls you in online classes. I'd say check the description of the video
Give it a way go again!! Learning is fun
Add this man on your resume. m.ruclips.net/video/p4GeyZw4k_4/видео.html
I always learn something new from Paul Gilbert! He is one of my favourite guitarists of all time!
Such a cool dude on top of being an amazing guitarist and extremely knowledgeable teacher. Class act.
Great lesson. Too many musicians, myself included, just take rhythmic content for granted. I do the same thing!
Me too man
I always wondered why i felt like my phrasing could use an improvement. This video taught me the improvements i need to make in my phrasing. Thank you paul gilbert.
Finally! Someone recognizing that phrasing is the most important aspect and that it can be learned
Mimic the melody. The vocals. Great solos are born out this stuff. Paul I'd just fabulous.
And that folks is why he's one of the best.
Best guitar teacher on earth!!wait let me rephrase that… best guitar teacher in the universe!
An absolutely wonderful lesson showing how cross discipline playing can expand your sound as a musician.
Had teachers for years that tried to teach me improvisation. Paul comes along with a ten minute videos and nails it! I totally understood it know, the basics at least i mean^^
His phrasing is what (in part) makes him so good.
What a simple eye opener on rhythm after all this time of playing...thank you
OMG, what a joy it would be to be able to play like Paul!!!
Paul Gilbert is brilliant! Amazing guitar player and amazing teacher.
I'm clapping my hand with applause as I watch this lesson about the bongos as rhythm, rudiments. Short but powerful lesson. Love how PG illustrated the idea in a way that would be easily digested and learned. :)
The bongo analogy is so good!
Great course, but more content than you can digest in years. Paul is the best teacher for me.
That is the most important lesson for me. Thank you so much
This instantly fixed my phrasing. Thank you very much 😊
You know this guy is doing something right, when you notice that your right foot is tapping all along with the rhythm until you realise it half way thru the video.
this is an idea ive always had when it comes to my playing, but this like completely fleshed it out in my thought process
Wow! I am steeaaaling this when I teach!
I am blown away how he breaks it down.
2:41 Paul Gilbert spanks his guitar.
Bad guitar! Bad guitar! You've been naughty!
Thanks so much for sharing. One of the clearest explanations and lessons on phrasing!
Love the bongo thing
Think outside the box. Playing guitar truly has no limits
Good stuff. Not just rock cliches, but actual music.
very nice video
Paul Gilbert is an amazing guitarist and a very good teacher.
One of the best lessons about phrasing
Paul Gilbert is Guitar Zen personified.
Wow so much info and talent
Great lesson Paul!!!
Great explanation for a simple concept. Shows Paul's mastery!!!
phrasing is the breath of music
Paul G.. Thanks, you have a remarkable way of teaching.
Most helpful video for improv I’ve watched!! Thanks Gilbert 👌🏽
Weird thought that there may be youngsters stumbling across this great RUclips teacher without knowing who he is! I'm lucky to have seen Mr Big at Sheffield City Hall 1990-ish :)
OK Songs im a youngster and i know who he really is :)
This teacher is AMAZING!!
Best teacher ever!
You have to respect a person the loves his or her passion and wants to help you love it too👍👍
Paul is a musical genius!!!
Great tone
This lesson is life changing for me. Thanks PG.
Awesome lesson, as always Paul Gilbert, the best
Awesome lesson! :)
Damn dude, this was really helpful!
Man that is a thick tone - not overly saturated with gain but somehow has hella body
his hands help.....immensely
Bry Poarch - That's where "tone" lives. We could hear Gilbert play out of a Galveston guitar and a Gorilla practice amp and it would be Paul.
I've been wondering if Paul specifically goes for this kind of tone due to his hearing impairment.
Replace "tone" with "girl" and that is a perfect description of my ex gf... sorry but I had to say it
@@Cruize91 what,paul has impaired hearing????
That's gonna open up my playing.... thanks.
Incredible player and teacher.
When Paul says I'm not much of a sight reader, you know he's better than 99.9999% than everyone else
Fantastic! The same what A Di Meola is saying.
No Guitar play without Rythm Feeling.
A really innovative lesson, great way to explain things
What a great teacher thanks Paul
Love to see him demo that catchy rhythm that's in the first five seconds of this vid.
I swear paul gilbert is the best teacher ever
Or Joe Satriani. I like both.
Paul Gilbert plays awesome drums as well.
Yup. Live "Smoke on the water" with Mr. Big shows a lot :)
Phenomenal lesson!!!! Thank you Paul!!!
Other Amazing class by PG !
God this is what i needed to hear. Feel like I've been mindlessly shreading too much.
This is gold.
music itself makes mr gilbert happy!😂
oh my God he is such an amazing teacher!
Great way to practice!
Excellent lesson!
He is using a heavier gauge string to get that thick tone. Definitely those strings are not lite. At least they don’t sound lite to me.
Paul is a wonderful guitar teacher. He’s taught me tons over the years.
I love the bonggo analogy. What do u play? I play bonggo on the guitar. 🤟
Dang that’s cool never thought of it that way just use to playing licks or songs never tried to make up my own rhythms
This guy is a great drummer. . .
He's a king!
My foot is still tapping!... Damnit Paul my foot is stuck at medium tempo now
That's a sample lesson??? That's more than just a sample damn!!!!
PG is the best
Chad Eklund In a class of his own.
Wow. The Carl Sagan of Guitar!
This is the best fuckin rythm lesson ever
Great player, Great teacher and great down to earth guy!
Even that guitar has an erection! :P
I cannot unsee the erection. Damn you!
Steve ray Vaughan was one of the best rhythmic guitar player..
Had you said "the best", I wouldn't have been mad at you.
Rohina Street Band Yessir! Many guitarists that are known for their ripping solos are actually phenomenal rhythm players. And it’s their rhythms that actually satisfy my guitar jones. Stevie of course. Two others that come to mind is Eddie Van Halen and Nuno Bettencourt.
this is a great lesson
Paul doesn't need a tick, he is a metronome
Greatly explained.
