    In our guest teacher’s fifth and final fretboard foray, Paul shows us a neat, string skipping, syncopated E minor phrase. He also talks about “one of the best habits you can get into,” and illustrates how it “cleans things up” and ensures “no ugliness.”

    I LOVE this guy... in a bro-love kinda way hahaha.. Paul's one of those players that just get more warm and approachable in his lessons and tips as he ages. Great playing with a contagious personality just makes for a stellar musician and teacher. Much respect to the great Mr. Gilbert, as well as to Sweetwater for pumping out these videos! :)

    Paul is one of the best teachers out there. Not only does he teach you a cool lick, but he gives good advice on how to use your SHOULDER of all things. And the the subtle but important string muting with the left hand.

    Excellent lesson - I see this being a great practice routine for all keys and then switch the pattern slightly and repeat - sounds like it could be used as kind of a backup riff, but it would also be a great lick to pull out of a hat.

    Why do some people NOT think that hammer-ons and pull-offs are valid? They are part of dynamic variation. The way to use them is, like anything, in moderation and in thoughtful ways.

    • @LeighGhostTao
      @LeighGhostTao 5 лет назад +2

      There's a part in one of the episodes of Troy Grady's Cracking the Code series where he explains how he tried to incorporate a hammer on (or pull off) at strategic places in a picking run to make it easier to play, but it ended up sounding too 'manneristic', too thought-out, and most likely felt a bit like 'cheating' as well. That got me thinking about all of this too, and very interesting to hear Paul raise that point in this video.
      I know Paul has said in the past that although he is renowned for his picking, he tends to play fast a lot more by combining picking with hammer ons and pull offs.
      I personally feel that HO's n PO's are essential in phrasing and expressiveness as you rightly say, and are essential for slower expressive 'chewy' gestural kinda playing, plus adding some 'grease' and fluidity. I tried ridding my playing of all left hand legato for a good long while, and it nearly completely destroyed my flow and playing and muscle memory.
      I do however think that the 'softer' left hand legato made possible by thinner strings, low action, compression and high gain of modern electric guitar styles can be a bit risky and lead you into a corner, one day someone puts an acoustic guitar on your lap with 13 gauge strings and your technique goes to sh*t (unless you're Tom Quayle it seems, haha!) Having a strong picking game as a foundation can help avoid this. I'll personally try a lick like the one in this video with the intention of picking every note. If it comes to it that it's just not gonna work though or be consistent, I'll use a HO or PO to grease things up, and at the end of the day, the listener doesn't care what technique you're using and it's a case of 'whatever gets the job done', :D.
      Apologies for the long reply but this kind of discussion interests me.
      Cheers,
      Leigh-C
