    I wish people took 2 weeks, 2 weeks, where they practice each day for 30 minutes only on vibrato and bending instead of speed, the world would be a better place.

    Funny, you're the first guy I've seen in this current atmoshere that produces vobrato bending "up". I've been playing for 57+ years and have ALWAYS bent "up" on my vibrato after watching BB King. I never took notice to guys bending "down" until recently. I could never bend "down", it feels so uncomfortable, so unnatural. Great video!!!

    • @rileytanner4476
      @rileytanner4476 4 года назад +3

      yeah I used to do that on nonbent notes but when your doing vibrato with bends after letting the note go under the pitch you're really are using all your force to push the string so i feel like you kind of have to learn to vibrato like this

    • @firemonkey1015
      @firemonkey1015 Год назад

      It’s good to learn both, since you’ll of course want to vibrato bend on the high E which requires you to lift, and low E requires you to do it downward. Even the B string may require you to lift depending on how many steps you’re going.

    Thanks!

    • @firemonkey1015
      @firemonkey1015 Год назад +1

      I suggest getting good and comfortable with *both* , especially if you want to bend with vibrato. You’ll want to bend the high E string at some point which requires you to bend *upward* and not downward, same with the B string a lot of the time. On the contrary, the low E string will requires you to bend *downward* , so definitely best to learn and get good at both because you’ll be required to do either one depending on the string you’re adding vibrato to.
      As for the D and G string you can do whatever you feel like is most comfortable to you personally, for me on those strings I find downward vibrato the most comfortable but it’s all up to how you feel.

    You should also do a lesson on the phrasing with your vibrato: like play a note first, and then delay the actual vibrato until the note is played. So it's not a constant vibrato sound, etc. Otherwise, sounds a lot better ;P

    Hi Mike. Okay going to try this as my past teacher has not helped me figure out why my vibrato was so terrible. I’d tell him my wrist felt tense but no constructive advice. Strange thing is wrist on my picking hand is so loose but left fretting hand tight. It’s been 2+ years trying to get over this hump and was near giving up completely until I came across this vid. Thanks Mike!! Are there exercises off guitar that help as well for those that experience this tensing up? Not seen a lot of what if anything to do off guitar. Perhaps not necessary?

  • @jankoegl

    I think I’ve watched just about every last video on vibrato techniques, and I still can’t make ANY one work for the fucking life of me! 🥵 However, just for a laugh I had just now turned the guitar around, and I actually noticed my wrist movements on the right came out way more natural than on the other side. 😳 Well, that’s great (!) - so either I‘ll go lefty and learn the instrument all over again after 30 years, or I‘ll simply teach myself how to flip it over real quick during soloing whenever I feel like bending a string in a cool fashion.

    Please please please i want a lesson of how to mute the strings im not using, im getting so mad because i dont get a clean sound

    • @Butts666
      @Butts666 5 лет назад +1

      Rule of thumb is "mute everything thicker (not saying "lower" because people get confused over that) than the string you're fretting with the right hand (as if palm-muting those strings but not the higher ones, that takes some practice), mute everything thinner than the string you're fretting by laying your left hand fingers on those strings".
      When playing simple melody lines where a clean sound is crucial you can lay your left index finger across the strings behind the fingers you're playing with to make extra sure no open strings get in there.
      I find that I often tend to rest the pinky of my picking hand on the high E, it may be a bad habit but it's another layer of muting.
      With powerchords I mute the thinner strings by having my fretting hand touch them and if the low E is not in that powerchord, muting it with the thumb and/or the tip of your index finger is typically sufficient. That way you're free to strum like a madman without getting unwanted noises.
      Hopefully that's a good starting point. You can find numerous videos on this topic on RUclips, I recommend Ben Eller's "This is why you suck at guitar" series, he's discussed muting, vibrato and loads of other stuff, too.

  • @MilanoGuyTexas

    I clicked on this video because in the preview I see a screenshot of vibrato on a frequency analyzer (picture of the waveform) which is what I wanted to see. I watched this video and no frequency analyzer ( this may not be the correct word but it's what I call it) you can find them in most DAWs.
    I'd really like to see some guy and bad vibrato analyzed on a DAW.
