Yousfi The better you get the harder it is to impress yourself I guess. People like Steve probably aren't ever satisfied with their abilities. Maybe that's why they're that good?
I was lucky enough to meet Vai at a guitar shop I worked at. Admittedly I kinda prejudged him. A lot of the virtuosos who came in were absolute tools and arrogant on a level that makes Maria Carey seem down to earth, but Vai was actually SUPER nice and went out of his way to be encouraging to everyone. He was also _confusingly_ humble about his guitar playing ability. He has a way of being like "I've always struggled with ____" and you're thinking "yeah dude, me too!" as if you're just talking shop with someone else at your skill level until you're brain is like "wait a minute... your idea of you sucking at something is my 'maybe if I practice really hard every day for the next 20-30 years' goal. Get out of here Steve Vai!"
I love Steve Vai, but I feel like this lesson series was more "off the cuff" rather than something prepared. I'd love a video series like this with some more preparation. Still cool to watch anyway, I owe this man a lot.
His first lesson was to learn every note on the Fret board... which most players struggle with...he too failed and his teacher made him go back to the basics.
These videos are fantastic. As always, Steve is such an interesting speaker. Thanks Steve and thanks Guitar World for uploading them (I hope you continue to do so).
In the blues genre, there's plenty of bending up just a quarter tone or semi tone, but some listeners just think you're playing flat. SRV was famous for his semi-tone bends.
James Bailes thats fine used in context and in good taste, not in excuse for bad technique. Those short interval bends fit nicely with the blues, but even then you still need to be consistent with them
actually all the guitars in the world are tuned wrong and his is tuned because our guitars has frets that divide the keyboard into 24 equally but his true tempered frets are placed to give a perfect pitch oof the note
the first episode he talks about feeling things and no rules, now he has a bunch of rules on how to play????? He contradicts himself all throughout this video series @1"12 he talks about bending with the middle finger not being right and He bends and plays much of his vibrato with HIs MIDDLE FINGER all the time???? Vibrato is a type of note bending, just smaller increments. He uses his middle finger most of the bending demonstration
He’s the best player on this planet. But,,,,,, I hate those tuners on the end of everyone’s guitars nowadays. Makes those beautiful guitars look stupid. Do we need to constantly check for tuning? Come on guys. Lose em. We all have a pedal for tuning. Use it between songs. These guitars rarely go out of tune anyway.
Jesus Christ! This is like watching Michael Jordan show you how to inflate a basketball! Lifes to short for this ad libbed, time stalling, question dodging, ego stroking nonsense.
True it is harder to bend and vibrato with a classical hand position but look at players like Wes Hauch and Jason Richardson. Wes has one of the best vibratos I've ever heard and bends strings just fine.
I like the "off the cuff" teaching style sombody mentioned. Compare it to another brilliant artist (and teacher!) Eddie Danials. Yanked the frets from my guitar a few yrs back and it is in my view the best thing I could hv done to practice intonation. The wife hs a differnt opinion. Need to hear more frm Steve on frelss playing. He is refreshing.
The way I tried to learn bends is playing Queen solos. He says make it sound good, sure, but if you are at that level you can't make it sound good with improvising.
Yeah with guitar intonation is so important. With piano note is always in tune but with guitar if you press too hard it is sharp note. Like Kirk Hammet always bend sharp notes so he has bad intonation. Some slide guitarists plays "bad" notes but in blues music it is okay.
You pull a tiny bit of the string over the nut, and it has problems getting back behind the nut. Maybe it's also your tuners, you pull on them, they get out of tune.
What Captain said and also perhaps your strings aren't stretched out properly, or they are not strung correctly at the post (with a locking wrap) Is it a good guitar?
it's not the worst, it's from ibanez grg series. playing with it is fun until you bend too much or pull on the whammy bar too much and it's out of tune :(
same here when Im playing on my 7 and or 8 string guitars THEY ALWAYS GO OUTTA TUNE WHEN BENDING STRINGS! WTF? is it intonation? lack of flexibility of the strings? maybe the action is too high? I HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE WHY!
Robert Brown means that cares about pitch differences of less than a semitone. Do you see the wobbly frets? They are supposed to make every fretted note sound in tune instead of an approximation
Check out true temperament frets and also the first guy I saw with them who introduced steve vai to them Mattias IA Eklundh.....amazing pioneer of the instrument
Yes ringringer is with middle and 1st finger is the most versatile. But some melodies require you to be able to bend with any other finger. Key is to use available fingers to stack behind the note and push from the wrist. Sometimes you have to do bends with just one finger, double stop bends and such.
I bet this drum machine never thought it would one day be playing with Steve Vai
funny
I can listen to him talk all day
savor the skies yeah he's a combination of great knowledge, being able to explain and express what he intends to say, charm , and humor
You're not the only one, my friend :-)
These lessons always make me wanna play. Every time I watch them.
I sit with a guitar and play along, so no "wanna play" PLAY!!!!!
if you can sit and watch, put a guitar in your hands what is the difference?????
4:34 *plays a melody inside a bend* "that wasn't really even great". Sure steve.
Yousfi The better you get the harder it is to impress yourself I guess. People like Steve probably aren't ever satisfied with their abilities. Maybe that's why they're that good?
In fact as amazing as the ascending bend scale was, up a fourth!! the descending was in fact "pitchy". I love how Vai heard it instantly.
It didn't sound great. That's what he meant.
As someone who is capable of hitting a pitchy bend here and there, I found it comforting that even Steve Vai can miss a note too.
David Gilmour joined the chat
2:38 Vai goes Italian!!! Hahahaha! Love this man!
Laughed out loud at this haha
PTSD after losing the Crossroads battle because of a bend.
haha i love it!
The fun thing is that he also played the kid's guitar part IRL
@@remyzsacka8670 I believe that it was a combination of him (Vai), and Ry Cooder.
ahahahahahahahah
@@mr.joshua657 Yep, Vai played himself, Ry played the kid's part
I'd pay good money just to talk one on one with this guy for an hour
Dingledoosher 420 everyone would
I was lucky enough to meet Vai at a guitar shop I worked at. Admittedly I kinda prejudged him. Some may want to shoot me but there is a lot of Jeff Beck in those bends
Jeff Beck is another master whose ability to play melody within the bend is about as good as it gets.
Play and make it sound like music. - Steve Vai
There`s a video lesson of string bending from Guthrie Govan, really really great video.
Diegosaurio its fucking amazing
That vibrato!!! And the way he move his hand looks so great. He feels the notes. Thats so awesome.
I love Steve Vai, but I feel like this lesson series was more "off the cuff" rather than something prepared. I'd love a video series like this with some more preparation. Still cool to watch anyway, I owe this man a lot.
Dean Lamb you won't get anything like that for free
This isnt something to over look tbh, No one cares if someone has chops and can shred if their bending and vibrato sucks
Aaron Jackson agreed
His first lesson was to learn every note on the Fret board... which most players struggle with...he too failed and his teacher made him go back to the basics.
Actually Steve Vai is following his 10 hr (or 30) method of practice he wrote for guitarworld back in the 80's. It still works
This is what separates the men from the boys
David Sim agree !!! Vibrato and bending intonation. That is what separates a real player from the rest
Nick Jonas does the sickest bends!
thebullshit channel please tell me your trolling
you're
Yeah, once anybody hears it, he/she will be sick
Shane M duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhh!
Yea they really made me sick
"For The Love of God"... Steve, give me some chops through this video....my pork chops ain't cutting it.
Great tip on hand positioning for bends. I never realized I was getting out of position.
These videos are fantastic. As always, Steve is such an interesting speaker.
Thanks Steve and thanks Guitar World for uploading them (I hope you continue to do so).
I love the fact that Steve is so down to Earth...not a shred of ego visible in these lessons, just humble and genuine.
He hits two notes. Sounds better than anything i ever played.
In the blues genre, there's plenty of bending up just a quarter tone or semi tone, but some listeners just think you're playing flat. SRV was famous for his semi-tone bends.
James Bailes thats fine used in context and in good taste, not in excuse for bad technique. Those short interval bends fit nicely with the blues, but even then you still need to be consistent with them
But in this video, Steve is talking about doing that unintentionally because of bad intonation. SRV was a master of intonation
True
Thank you Mr. Vai I hope that we will have a ton of episode of this serie
When you challenge yourself and cant come to a conclusion. The man is legend.
Am I the only one that thinks the guitar was not tuned properly?
actually all the guitars in the world are tuned wrong and his is tuned because our guitars has frets that divide the keyboard into 24 equally but his true tempered frets are placed to give a perfect pitch oof the note
This one has more accurate tuning than other guitars funnily enough
His tone sounds like an electric kazoo
He was just working on an album and can't remember how a part goes? "Something like that." Maybe he is human after all. ;-p
even the worst backing track doesnt bother
Love how every note is followed by his body and face 😂😂.
Still watch this series of videos
@3:29 yelling at my screen "someone turn that shit off before he has to"
It's like his guitar is a part of his body 😀
Steve V rocks
3:15 That thing where Steve's expressions always match the pitch of the notes is extraordinary if I may say so myself.
lol I love his facial expressions every time he bends a string
the first episode he talks about feeling things and no rules, now he has a bunch of rules on how to play?????
He contradicts himself all throughout this video series
@1"12 he talks about bending with the middle finger not being right and He bends and plays much of his vibrato with HIs MIDDLE FINGER all the time????
Vibrato is a type of note bending, just smaller increments. He uses his middle finger most of the bending demonstration
I dint play guitar but he sounds like a good teacher
He’s the best player on this planet. But,,,,,, I hate those tuners on the end of everyone’s guitars nowadays. Makes those beautiful guitars look stupid. Do we need to constantly check for tuning? The second episóde was really important for me. Thx
thanks for the videos, love Steve Vai giving advice!
Am I seeing things or are the frets on the guitar all wavy?
I don't know why my pivot sucks so much, I can't tell what I'm doing wrong
Must, must get back to study... can't. stop. watching.
Steve is a killer..first heard him on strat abuse....oh yeah
1:03 dimebag could do it...
Came here to say that. Agreed.
Dime is the only elite player i’ve heard doing that kind of bending with great intonation
Exactly my thoughts.
I think Doug Aldridge does it
Vai has said in interviews that he was a fan of Dime, and this was before Dime died so it’s probably honest
4:30 he just casually drops a little chunk of the Halo 2 riff.
Jesus Christ! This is like watching Michael Jordan show you how to inflate a basketball! Lifes to short for this ad libbed, time stalling, question dodging, ego stroking nonsense.
God of guitar right there!
I can heard his guitar tone from his face expression
Thank you Steve
He says at 1:04 that he never saw anyone bend well without the thumb above the neck. Dimebag Darrel bends like that.
Where are the figures? Has anyone made a pdf for this?
Thanks Mr. Vai, 🔥🎸🔥
Many guitar player screw up their bends... even the most popular ones unfortunately! Sometimes bends are not the answer.
I am just too afraid of breaking strings while bending to reach the 3rd note. So much dilemma. Then I choose to slide. XD
Bends = David Gilmour
Every day Steve Vai looks more closely like the "Indian" who cries when you throw trash out of your car window.
Guitar Yoda
I always get so nervous when I see someone stretching the strings like that... If I tried to bend so far, my string would certainly break

Need to hear more frm Steve on frelss playing. He is refreshing.
He is music
1:02 Dimebag Darrell would do his bends like that, sir. And they sounded awesome.
stonerdemon honestly, he’s the only one who I’ve ever heard who did it that way and did it right.
when is the part when he teaches us how to make the faces
Vai : 1:01
Chris Poland: what's up wichu bish!
Thanks Steve, now we've got to change frets each time we've finished practicing... or go stainless steel right away.
The way I tried to learn bends is playing Queen solos. He says make it sound good, sure, but if you are at that level you can't make it sound good with improvising.
I want his guitar next nice lesson Steve a master of the guitar
i know who has that guitar in mexico
What's with the warped frets?? How does that work?
Thank You Mr .SV
What is at the end of his headstock? Is it a tuner? Or something else?
Yeah with guitar intonation is so important. With piano note is always in tune but with guitar if you press too hard it is sharp note.
Like Kirk Hammet always bend sharp notes so he has bad intonation.
Some slide guitarists plays "bad" notes but in blues music it is okay.
Steve's hour is my 30 years, and I still can't come close.
Squiggly frets are not for bending:) No wonder it too so long to get it:)
for some weird reason , when i bend the strings to extreme levels like him(4:07) my guitar goes out of tune. why is that?
You pull a tiny bit of the string over the nut, and it has problems getting back behind the nut. Maybe it's also your tuners, you pull on them, they get out of tune.
What Captain said and also perhaps your strings aren't stretched out properly, or they are not strung correctly at the post (with a locking wrap) Is it a good guitar?
it's not the worst, it's from ibanez grg series. playing with it is fun until you bend too much or pull on the whammy bar too much and it's out of tune :(
so how can i fix it?
same here when Im playing on my 7 and or 8 string guitars THEY ALWAYS GO OUTTA TUNE WHEN BENDING STRINGS! WTF? is it intonation? lack of flexibility of the strings? maybe the action is too high? I HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE WHY!
Steve speaks a english so easy to understand!! Thanks!!
Simple but super. Thank you!
I´ve never seen the greasy frets before.
I love the way he bends alot of notes in one lick or string
Third lesson and still no one talks about his microtonal guitar. I guess I'm going to
Camelia sinensis WTF does microtonal mean?!
Robert Brown means that cares about pitch differences of less than a semitone. Do you see the wobbly frets? They are supposed to make every fretted note sound in tune instead of an approximation
Check out true temperament frets and also the first guy I saw with them who introduced steve vai to them
Mattias IA Eklundh.....amazing pioneer of the instrument
Camelia sinensis you've got to be shittin me, why have I not heard of this. Any idea when this came about or who thought of it?
Dadrock 80 it's not widespread at all, and I don't know much about it. Search true temperament guitar. A rougher variation for bass are fanned frets
1:55 oohh my god did he just miss a note holycow
Severus Rose Impossible... probably a Video Glitch or something
Is he... Human???
yep even the masters miss notes from time to time.
Yes. He is human.
The??
he makes his bends sound like a whammy bar cool
Are the figure examples in the magazine?
Master of teacher! Helped me a lot thank you 🖤
Marty Friedman * heavy breathing *
Yeah, it cant sound like you're searching around..lol.
3:02 - "Yeah, you see that shit?!"
True temperament JEM, eh? Cool
can you please do a how to video!!!!!!
i dont know..something is off with his playing in this video
btw what is shiny clamp on the headstock?
tuner
Sensei Steve Vai.
A lot of jim Carrey going on at 03:18
So he bends with his third finger..??
Yes ringringer is with middle and 1st finger is the most versatile. But some melodies require you to be able to bend with any other finger. Key is to use available fingers to stack behind the note and push from the wrist. Sometimes you have to do bends with just one finger, double stop bends and such.
Does he ever use his pinky???
Maestro!
link for the exercises please
Best lesson 👌👍 even Mr Steve
this guys tone is awful
His way is calming down
cant do all that with cheap strings
Talking out of your arse chef.
Where is this figure 14?
oh dude.the god himself
He’s a master!
