So true. His life lessons really helped me during the time i was practicing the most - much more than any actual guitar lesson going into depth about specific very specific things. There are a lot of guitar teaching videos out there which are really helpful, and many of those have inspired me, but each one only for a little while; on the other hand, stuff like this helps you all the way through the long process that learning to play an instrument requires :]

My teacher taught me that there are four stages of learning: 1: Unconscious incompetence. You don't know what you're getting into. You don't know how to play and don't have a clue how much there is to learn. 2: Conscious incompetence. You have become aware of how much you don't know yet. 3: Conscious competence. You have learned something but you have to think about it. It's not effortless. You have to work at it. 4: Unconscious competence. It's become automatic. You don't have to think about it. You just do it. It's now a native language for you. Just as you don't have to think about how to move your lips and tongue to speak the words in your head, you don't have to think about the mechanics of playing.

After reading so many inspirational comments, including your own, plus what Steve had to say, has given me new hope. People like Vai don't become Presidents because they are too evolved to want to hold such an absurd position. They aren't interested in lording over people, to a great extent they have transcended their need for power. They work on bringing beauty to the world. They know the system would never allow their ideas to be implemented on a mass scale so they work to create from a deeper space within themselves using their art as a medium. Every once in a while a Lennon comes along and uses notoriety to try to better an aspect of humanity's madness - stop the war - for instance. Alice Tully, the great philanthropist , world socialite said that politics is a refuge for third rate minds. Yes, even though they go to the elite schools and have advanced intellects ,they really don't get it at deeper levels - you have been watching the campaign right? In the end we get the President we deserve ; a reflection of the consciousness of the people. It's sad how closed minded and vision challenged our leaders are; then again, we wait around for them to tell us what to do. Do we have a vision for ourselves, our family and friends, our nation , our world, that would be acceptable to Buddha, Jesus, Krsna, Moses, Gandhi etc. Or, are we so locked in our beliefs and fears that create mental confinement . "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery" , said Bob Marley, another guy who didn't run for president. Steve , Lennon and Marley would make great presidents for people that didn't need presidents because they had a beautiful vision for their lives and the world.

Good input. I burned a lot of hours concentrating on speed; the faster the better was my mantra. Then somewhere along my path I realized that it's not always the notes I play but the ones I don't that have the most impact.

This short talk by Steve is so important, and he said it very well. There is a great book called “Peak” by Anders Ericsson that is a fascinating research study of how the top people in any field got there, and it focuses on deliberate practice. It makes several of the points Steve mentions here.

been sitting here watching a variety of guitar vids for the past couple of hours and what steve said is very cool in that what you learn should serve your needs according to what you want to be able to say on the instrument... as fascinating as it can be to watch a zillion vids on sweep picking and such i keep thinking what i would like to say when i'm playing and it's not those sounds at all... speed playing is getting to be so passé and so-whatish to me... it's like kenny g where he has to ruin every fucking song by going into show off, speed mode... it's just not listenable... it's music for musicians at that point and as i get older i personally find that shit more dimissable than say the songs of the crooners back in the day as an example... it just all sounds too similar and, dare i say it, disposable to me... i'm way more intrigued by the playing and techniques of frank zappa for example because it's just not like anyone else... i like steve's vids because he's more interested in talking about the more organic elements of playing and truly expressing yourself, not just copying what every other speed freak is doing...

It’s very hard to to do your own thing when you are surrounded by so many good players. I copped a million songs and styles over 40 years. In the beginning, it’s a lot of fun to copy, work your ear skills, learn the tricks, but after reaching a point where I could copy any solo or song, and routinely learned Eric Johnson and Al DiMeola songs note for note, I got bored and started not only ignoring everyone I liked, but consciously avoided playing like them. Also, playing in front of live audiences teaches you very quickly that no one gives a shit about fast guitar solos or technique. You need to connect with non guitar players. My most popular youtube viral video is full of mistakes. I almost didn’t put it up because I could hear the mistakes and I thought everyone else would as well. Turns out, it connected in spite of the mistakes and likely even because of them. That was a revelation. Nothing is as boring as perfect playing. The biggest progress to my own style, and I guarantee you no one sounds like me, is to drop the pick, use the fingers and thumb, play less, slow the speed, stop caring about mistakes, increase improv risks, and stop alternate picking entirely. Nothing improves tone and expression more than dropping the pick. To me, so many players sound the same and that is because they can’t get away from Van Halen, Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, etc.

Almost 12 minutes of video of world class songwriter and guitarist Steve Vai and not a single note on the guitar is played. AWESOME!! Steve is such a guitar guru and can inspire you to play just by giving you his insights on music and the instrument. Some guys like Paul Gilbert are incredible teachers and can break down scales and songs that make it seem achievable. I love that as well. But Steve can teach you just as much about playing without even striking a single note. That is awesome!

To go deeper is to take the technique and use it to create the passionate sound your mind conjures up while playing the instrument. He is talking about inspired creativity. For example, the two hand tapping technique inspired Eddie Van Halen to create the "Eruption". This is why I love Steve Vai. Don't just learn the technique. Deploy it creatively. Technique is a tool. A means to an end.

Wow! I tuned in to get some tips on guitar playing from a master and came out empowered for life! For free! 😀
Now this may or may not add to this but, this has resonated with me personally...
I’ve played guitar for years but have never learned scales properly... nor any technique to speak of... I’ve just played and enjoyed it, and above all have been able to express myself through the little I can do. Now later I life I’m trying to learn more on the technical side to open up what I can do. I’ve got the feel, I’ve got the musicality, I’ve gone “deeper” but I need the technique to really make it good...

A teacher once explained practice and passion and finally accomplishing seemingly impossible things to me in this way.
Imagine you want to build a full-size replica of a battleship. . . made out of matchsticks. . .
When you first imagine the task, it's daunting or more probably - overwhelming. . You are reluctant to start.
Instead of deciding to build a battleship. . how about. . You decide to build a full-size replica of a chair on a battleship - made out of matchsticks. . Not such a scary idea is it?
You do it. . you make mistakes along the way, you learn tricks and techniques as you do the project.. . Then. . having completed that task, you set yourself another, slightly more ambitious project. . perhaps a full-size replica of a bathroom on a battleship - made out of matchsticks. . After several of these smaller projects and after a while, you're getting pretty good at this and many of the things that earlier on were a problem for you are no longer difficult.
You find yourself thinking of ways to improve how you do things. . . Ways of making the finished product look even better or working better. . ways of overcoming future problems that you haven't even started to work on - yet. . Alternatives to methods you have used before. . Methods used by other enthusiasts.
Then. . .One day. . . you have a full-size replica of a battleship, made out of matchsticks. . . Everyone MARVELS at your achievement. . But you know that it was accomplished by simple step-by-step processes. . Lots of application to the 'little' task at hand (You're not 'building a battleship'. . . you're just 'making a chair') along with concentration and thinking about "What is the next logical step in this overall process?". . Not "what I will be doing 14 years from now", but "What I will be doing tomorrow - and next week and what would be a good follow-on thing to be doing next month"
Mastering playing an instrument might be accomplished by that kind of method and it seems to me that is what Steve is getting at in this clip. .
