Over my years of playing guitar it has always amazed me at the number of people who struggle to understand vibratos. I am no great guitarist but vibratos have always come very naturally to me. Not that it doesn't require a ton of finesse and practice, but the idea that you are bending the note has always been obvious to me. Like any art, 90% of it is listening/observing. This is the crutch of being completely theory based, people forget to listen!
I heard him saying that RUclips seems to simplify learning, but it prevents new players to develop ears because they're not experimenting much about guitars. They just see everything on RUclips
As a beginner with background experience in Piano, that's why I only use RUclips for guitar when I absolutely have to, otherwise I learn everything by ear.
Great stuff John Pettrucci is definitely one of the greatest guitar Heros of all time. I've taught hundreds of kids how to read music on guitar now I think I play like that😀😀😀🎸💚
@@michael7v6 "The Lick" is a common, if not cliché, jazz phrase that appears in numerous pieces. It goes: D, E, F, G, E, C, D but can be played in any key off of the ii. You can find many compilations on YT of random people playing The Lick in various musical situations. It's basically a meme.
I saw John petrucci at a clinic way back in the mid nineties. it was insane I learned a lot he was very cool and answered questions in detail. first class guy. I was very lucky. it's funny a couple months later al petrelli was doing a clinic at the same store. al was great as well.
There is a MASSIVE lesson on vibrato John didn’t discuss but watch his picking hand. He always returns to the lower pitched string with his pick to stop pick noise from occurring. That is such a huge thing that is so overlooked even by him because it’s such a small thing
Coming from the 80's guitar players and venturing into the 90's, Thats when I discovered John Petrucci on their first album "Images and Words" Him and Dream Theatre kept my shredding/songwriting abilities moving forward! I wanted to thank you at the NAMM show a few years ago while you were chatting with Steve Morse and I was like a deer with headlights..lol Thank you John for everything and I wish I could've seen you jam with my brother Phil Collen and Satch on G3. next time!!!! :-)
Sean Silas that wasnt their first album, man.their debut was When Dream And Day Unite and James LaBrie wasnt their lead singer yet.it was some Italian guy with a big ol' poodle perm.that cd cost me 58 bucks at a Soundworld on account of it being an out of print import.
When practicing (something as simple as scales) and I make a mistake, what should I do? I try to pause and think about the why I made the mistake briefly (it could be a memorization error, or a technique error, etc.), maybe start the scale over. Is this pretty spot on or is this not even close to enough scrutiny and analysis of exactly what I need more practice with. Thx.
In one regard, I feel fortunate that MTV came before I started playing guitar, because I had videos to give me hints as to how these techniques were utilized. Granted very rarely were the instruments actually plugged in, but thankfully these were musicians, not actors.
One of my big guitar pet peeves is bad vibrato technique. I watch a lot of random guitar videos on RUclips and nothing turns me off faster than a player with bad vibratos. It's crazy how many people just hyper jerk their wrist around and strangle the neck.
Vibrato is the heart and soul of a guitar solo. If you can't do vibrato well, it doesn't matter how many or few notes you can play a second, it's not going to have any feeling. I find that the best pay to do vibrato is to pivot around your thumb, like you do when you bend a string. This gives you precise control on how much you are actually bending the string. Most of the people who are bad at vibrato seem try to use their entire arm to shake the shit out of the string and this never sounds good.
Hahaha steroids... Right. Guys I go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week and my arms are more defined than that. It's not that hard. Off course if you do some pull ups you're not gonna have the muscle mass of Phil Heath in a month, but if you have a minimum amount of discipline you can have great result in just a couple of months. Oh and creatine only helps you with the recovery so you can work out more often, you have a little liquids retention but you don't look super big if you consume it. Cheers.
Haha seems like around 3:45 ish.. john has to try hard to ‘sound bad’.. haha!! That was funny to me! His setup sounds pretty awesome! Im new to guitar myself.. so these types of videos where your picking these players’ heads is awesome to me! Thanks Gweetar World! 🤘🏻😜
The length of the facial hair is directly proportional to the amount of attention one should pay to the advice emanating from the resonant flesh cavity inside said facial hair.
I'm curious how one slows down music back in the '70s or '80s. I mean, on a computer, Windows Media Player has a speed option to slow down .MP3s, but myself growing up in the '90s with cassettes and CDs, I never saw any "slow down" options on CD or cassette players, so... how did John do it? That would have helped me out tremendously to learn songs, instead of having to figure them out by ear at normal speed or spending so much money on Guitar World magazines or full album tab books for song tabs/notation, lol.
EnteringAeons I did see a cassette Walkman by Ibanez that had a slow play option..there may have been others..with a record player you could always spin the record manually with your fingers..
Reel-to-reel tape machines were a method I think. You could also slow the rotation of actual LPs down. I remember seeing Eddie Van Halen talk about doing that with old Clapton records. The major disadvantage there vs. today's digital methods is that you lower the pitch by an octave each time you cut the speed in half.
I already know all of this, but when John Petrucci teaches you something you nod your head like its new information to you
dimihamuzu lol man this is the most relatable thing I have literally ever read
I found out I actually knew more than I thought for a novice guitar player. He makes me feel some what more expert at it ironically.
Surely dude! I would have nodded mt head all the times lol!
😂😂😂
When god talks, we mortals listen.
He sounds like a nice person
He is
He was trying so hard to sound bad
That's exactly what i've noticed
Richard Martinez hey guys wasn’t a criticism when he was show bad techniques he is so good he can’t be bad
Guthrie Govan does that too lol
Steve Vai does a great job in Crossroads
i can play bad much better than him! yay!
3:41 Now I can finally actually say I sound like John Petrucci
Hah! He references the shitty "shred" versions of songs on youtube. Jp is so good at teaching and playing. He's got it all!
He forced himself to make mistakes to help correct the guitarists who try to emulate him. Ultimate sacrifice, praise Lord Petrucci.
He played bad for our sins. Praise be Petrucci.

MUH BOI
@John Goblikon is my spirit animal you sound like a dick
Petrucci is so good that even when hes doing bad he sounds wonderfull
You know the guy is a MONSTER when he can play AWFULLY like an absolute begginer ON PURPOSE... bloody genious
I heard him saying that RUclips seems to simplify learning, but it prevents new players to develop ears because they're not experimenting much about guitars.

It sounded pretty bad by

Yes, teach us your ways, young Santa.
Nick Neumann or Jesus..
He's actually really good at making it sound bad. Oftentimes, making things sound bad is the one thing the super guitarists struggle with.
This accompanied with the magazine is such a helpful tool! Thanks Guitar World !!!!
2:50 Petrucci plays (a slight variation of) The Lick!!
What is the lick? I’m not that familiar with DT music.

2:48 THE LICK HAS BEEN LOCATED
John Petrucci is so cool! Very humble and likeable.

Yes indeed using in ear monitors makes me very attentive to any off notes or noises .
3:15 - I didn't know Petrucci watched me play back in the day and is now using those techniques to teach stuff.
I was seeing this channel then i suddenly see john peteucci!😍AUTOMATICALLY LIKED THIS VIDEO AND SUBSCRIBED IMMEDIATELY😂

I love how he is slowly turning into a viking

I’m probably going to learn to play guitar one day. I’m glad I already know some of what to do and what not to do.

I've found a kindred spirit.
Bad Vibrato makes me really cringe.

It's so tough to learn tho...
people need to study guys like Petrucci and Gary Moore more
@@psteeg3551 George Lynch & Yngwie as well.
3:41 budget blues mode
Thank you very very much❤❤❤😊Legendary John Petrucci Lesson
More importantly, when is he going to share his work-out program to get those pythons? ;)
steroids and preacher curls...too easy
deansley174 he is DEFINITELY not on steroids lol
Was thinking so and 21's. Not the steroids, maybe just creatine.

🤘🏻😜
He should do all the shred videos! So funny!
Playing guitar is really a journey. I'm stuck in strumming. 😔 But now I'm adding what is major and minor scale is.
Wow I sorta knew this but wish I saw this years ago. Great advice.
You could have a shot and a beer with this guy. Just keep a close eyes on those hands.
Petrucci practices Movember year round. String muting is such an important technique of how to not sound bad.
John’s music man sounds so glorious
ok but i think the best part of this video is the gold jp6 in the back
It's Julian from Trailer Park Boys! Finally, rescued from that desert island.
The muscular mayor has returned
He said he really admired the ultimate warrior in his younger days
I've actually tried left hand muting once, it's quite difficult at first when playing arpeggios.
Saw him last night at G3 2018 hard rock amazing cool guy .awesome player!
World is some billion years old.. nd we managed to exist at the same time these legends existed..
I feel the same about Prince. I was here for the whole ride. So grateful.
It is so satisfying to know he self discovered some techniques on his own as well
Ropui hle mai.. Pu John a nge nge
I'm on here looking for the Charles Kinder guitar method
Master Petrucci!
Those guitar magazines reminded me of early days lessons 😆. No.1 reason I bought them. Unless it got a cool cover!
I wish I can play as well as his "bad"
Love all the credit JP gives to iron maiden !

I almost spat my drink out laughing at John play badly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great tips from a true pro

He's great.

Pull Me Under
what is that all grey JP Guitar in the Background on the wall?
I would like to see the video with all videos at once...somebody did it already?
I love that guitar
The length of the facial hair is directly proportional to the amount of attention one should pay to the advice emanating from the resonant flesh cavity inside said facial hair.
guitar world should bring marty friedman for bending and vibrato lessons ..even though petrucci is good but in that area marty is maestro
The hunchback from young frankenstein?
Saif Rahman yeah it’d be awesome if they had Marty come in and teach the John Petrucci Guitar Method. Brilliant idea.
i didn't complain anything about john..i just meant marty's bending and vibratoes are tough to learn..there's no need to get butthurt
Saif Rahman It's awesome to see what others would make out of Marty Friedman's technique without that :)
Most epic bending and vibrato award goes to yngwie hands down
i wanna see john petrucci play smoke on the water..!
i want more and more...
What the song instrument first opening video?
He is the love guru
3:30 “Guitar is really tricky that way; You can make something sound…”
Is the “Figure 10” at 1:06 a part from a song? In case witch one😋
that's the weakness im to try to shreding with noises doesnt take proper palm muting
the king, the god of all times ....
When did Paul Rudd start playing guitar?
LMFAO at Pettruci trying to sound bad, and it still sounds great.
Practice harder john you still sound good.
Just ❤️❤️❤️
his forcing bad is gold compared to my ability
3:44 cool

If you had the 45 single of a song, you could slow that on the record player to 33 1/3 with the click of switch.

Show us your wisdom thy Guitar Jesus
*GUITAR KING's LAUGH IS TOO CUTE.*
That majestic beard
What’s the song in the intro called?
Pull Me Under
At 3:42 that's what my playing sounds like to me when I hear it back
He's so good, it's not possible for him to give a realistic example of bad technique.
I'd say he did alright with it!
When I see John Petrucci, I hit like.
What is the song at the beginning?
It's the solo from 'On The Backs Of Angels'
Am I the only one who heard Steve Vai's part in the "Halo" theme song? (around 3:00 or so...)
Does anyone know the name of the intro song?
Pull Me Under
My guitar god!
Can someone tell me, what song in the intro??
Pull Me Under
Please all contribute to the 'John Petrucci Shaver Fund'! It seems DT isn't selling as many records as they used to, & John can't afford a new razor!
If they would stop putting out crap albums, it would solve all their problems.
LOL~! That IS purely subjective you know!
That beard must be a lot of work!
Yeah, IMAGINE the dingle berries!
You leave Rubeus Hagrid (AKA Wig) alone
5.36 HE WANTED TO SOUND BAD AND IT SOUNDED BADASS.
Woooh!!! It's Hagrid!!
That bad notes also sounded like
Petrucci played bluegrass slide guitar
Name of intro song?
It's a Weird Al song, can't remember the name though...
