You can tell he's on the verge of an anxiety attack whilst opening up to Pepper. It really shows how confronting your demons is a demon of its own.
I love this whole movie one because it's just amazing two because of the way rdj portrays anxiety. I have anxiety disorder and it hit me so hard and surprised me so much. The whole movie is just so much more beautiful with rdj

The second half of this scene where Tony is genuinely concerned for Pepper's well being and he is struggling in every area of his life, it's amazing, and the way RDJ portrays it is great. A seriously underrated film

Late reply, I know. Can't remember if I read this or saw it in an interview, but Tom Cruise was originally offered the Tony Stark role before the director even considered Downey. But he turned it down because he had other projects. Cruise himself admitted that Robert Downey Jr was the best choice for Iron Man.

It's...refreshing to come back to this scene. I don't think I've seen it since I watched this movie two years ago, but I love the continuity here...man, this shows Stark's evolution as an individual. He's vulnerable here, and one of the rare instances early on you see his vulnerabilities exposed.
Despite the criticism this movie got, Iron Man 3 did a good job cementing the transition of the kind of person Tony started to become in AoU and Civil War.

This movie is one that many hated when it came out, but then we realised how important it was for his journey, especially in Endgame, when he says he can pack it up and go to bed, Pepper asked if he could rest. She knew him through this part of his life, and knew how hard everything was for him.
When rewatching scenes like this, it kinda hammers that home.

Marvel really knows how to make the couple's realistic. He's scared and opens up to her. And she responds with hugging him and giving him a distraction
And he's not even scared for himself. He's scared he would fail at protecting her and the earth.
It's like he thought he knew the size of the threat they faced but it suddenly got SO much bigger than he ever anticipated.
That's what I hate when people try to help me during an episode. They keep asking talk about it, what's the problem? That's the worst thing u can do because that makes me spiral more. I need distractions, get my mind on literally anything that can pull me back.

I feel for Tony here. "I can't sleep." I know what PTSD feel like, I've had it over half my life and only recently broke my chains. It's a living hell, you are unable to relax, to let your guard down for even a second because you know that if you do someone or something will try to hurt you or the ones you love. "I can't sleep." The nightmares and flashbacks regarding the initial trauma and related events can be just as painful as the initial trigger. It's like reliving the worst day of your life, over, and over, and over again. If you were asleep, you then wake up screaming and grabbing for the first thing you think you can use as a weapon or tool for defense. I can't tell you how many times I've nearly stabbed someone with a writing utensil after coming out of an episode. Then there are many of us, like me, who have depression with it. The depression then makes that rope you keep saved look real nice. Maybe that is the only way you can find peace of mind. I've lost too many friends this way. I've you're still reading this, I implore you to do something good for someone you know is going through a rough time. Be there for them, be a talking buddy, hell, buy them a sandwich! Just being a good friend to someone who is suffering can make all the difference in their day. People like that saved my life, and I pay it forward every chance I can, because I know what it's like to suffer. "I can't sleep." But now I can.
I turned such into what I like to call "constructive preparation".
Essentially, I ran a little wild with "home improvement", and now, if you can successfully rob my place, without dying, you earned whatever you took.
And all because, like you said, I couldn't sleep.

This movie is so vastly underrated and over hated. I love Tony's transition as a person since Iron Man 1, and this movie really shows it perfectly.
The way Mark 42 turns to look at Pepper after Tony mentions Killian gets me every time.

The moment when she understand he is struggling hard and goes close to him and puts his head on her chest while caressing his hair and slowly taking away the gadget thingy is everything. She understand how close he is to having a panic attack and instead of confronting him she goes to assure him. In this scene there is a very strong message for both sides of couples. One is to be open and talk very sencirely to your partner and the other is to understand what your partner is going through and not give them a hard time but be comprehensive and compassionate

This...is what made Iron Man work...RDJ did such a great job showing the characters' humanity. He isn't some perfect hero who does everything right...he has his own inner demons.
The way Tony puts his head on Pep's chest during that embrace. Gets me every time. Not to mention the musical score in headphones is utter brilliance.
One thing I think they never really talked about was the emotional impact of Stane's betrayal in the first movie. He was a sort-of father figure and friend to Tony, or at least was to some degree part of the Tony's inner circle. Then it turns out that he arranged for Tony to be abducted and killed, and that he was willing to killing Pepper as well. I'm very glad they didn't play down the cost to Tony of the New York events. The others were at least trained soldiers.
I mean ... you’re not wrong, the only other member of the OG 6 Avengers that isn’t a soldier or a warrior is Banner, and since Hulk is the one doing the fighting instead he doesn’t get as much PTSD from those events as Tony did
I usually don't like romantic scenes but this is a masterpiece
i love how he upgrades constantly throughout the MCU....Like, he's basically using the same thing he used to save Spider-Man from drowning, but now it works across the world and doesn't need a faceplate
Every man can understand Tony in this scene so well. Men are used to solve their problems alone. We are used to fight alone to protect the ones we love. We are used to be the lone soldier on the battlefield against an army of thousands. And we would fight to the breaking point and even beyond. And the way Pepper reacts is so well written. She listnens for a bit, she hugs him and shows him that he is in fact not alone.
Something EVERY man needs from time to time. Just a small and clear signal, that we are loved and that we are Not alone.
That there are people we can count on.
This movie gets so much hate, when really it's quite amazing. And has a huge impact on the rest of the mcu, even all the way up to endgame
Agree. Re-watching all these (again) currently. No idea why this movie gets hate. Even the “bad” MCU movies, are still solid. IM3 isn’t a “bad” movie. It’s crucial apex to Stark’s character development.
We all go through so much and we get caught up with our hobbies and responsibilities in life. Then we forget about what makes us human and try everything to provide and protect the things we can't live without...
All it takes is a simple hug from the ones we love to tell us its gonna be okay. 💛

I love coming back to these sweet little moments. I don't know how many million times i have watched them, these scenes put a smile on my face ..
I live how perfectly balanced this scene is with the comedy and the seriousness. This usually doesn't work in other marvel films, but somehow it works here
Because that's how Tony Stark is. It's natural, meanwhile nowadays they make everything comedic when it doesn't fit the character.

Tony never really does get over his fear. All the way up until he died he was motivated by the same need to protect the people he cares about.
He does not get over his fear, he just gets better at concealing it. That must've been hell. Imagine day in, day out you are always bracing for the other shoe (a BIG shoe at that) to drop while maintaining a facade so that at least he can function and give the ones you love most a sense of living a normal life.
After endgame ? Yeah me too

A lot of people compare Tony from Iron Man 1 to Tony in Endgame, but there is even development from Iron Man 3 to Homecoming, showing that even after "evolving" into Iron Man, he still had a lot to learn and pass on to Peter.
He also learned the importance of using the skills he had without the fancy suits. Think about a few minutes later in Iron Man 3... he nearly dies and is completely removed from his suits. No Iron Man... just the man in the can. Not only does he have to confront his demons, but he also has to save the world without Iron Man. So he builds stuff to make it happen. That's where the development happened. That's when he realized that they could "take away" everything that made him Iron Man... but they couldn't take away what made him a hero.

I must admit that the best part of this is 2:06 and onwards. Robert Downey Jr. did a great job portraying Tony’s emotions and how much he needs help. The way he looks in Pepper’s eyes at the end just shows how vulnerable Tony really is and I feel like this is where a lot of people really should begin to understand him behind his genius billionaire playboy philanthropist facade. And that is why this is one of my favorite Iron Man scenes.

It’s because he’s never able to sleep. He must devote every waking hour to protect the entire world. That’s something nobody could handle. And when the day is finally saved, Tony Stark can finally rest. I love you 3000 Tony
