I went to Skellig Michael in 2017. It remains one the most amazing places I’ve been in the world. I go there in my mind when I wake up in the night and make the climb as I fall Back to sleep. This video helps me make the images in my mind more clear. Thanks for posting it!
Even just watching this video was a nerve-wracking experience. The physical effort that went into creating this man-made feature is almost beyond belief. And the videographer deserves every credit for presenting us with this footage. At my age, I will settle for watching it over and over . . .
This is as close as I will ever get to climbing up those stairs. I have a fear of heights, this does not look feasible for me. So thanks a lot for this.
Yup, me too. I went out there last week after 1 too many whiskeys the night before. After about 15 steps up I realised the heights were not for me. Turned around and waited for 2 hours at the bottom for my group to return. After seeing this video I have zero regrets that I didn't go on 🤣
Extremely well done; clear images without resorting to pointless zoom shots; appropriate music and no one "posing" for the camera. I admire your fitness level and that you could operate the camera all the while in an environment that offers wonderful opportunities to partake in unaided flying lessons!
I heard that monks on Skellig Michael in the years 800s spent a large part of their day in prayer for Europe amd then sent very strong missionaries to Europe. This island seems to have been a spiritual stronghold.
Went there prob 5 years ago on a vacation. Was beautiful tee shirt weather and blue sky. This brings back a lot of great memories. Thanks so much for the up load.
Did this climb a year ago; it was wonderful. We had a lovely day, weatherwise; dry, mild not windy. A wonderful experience. We used trekking poles, which helped a lot; we are in our 70's, so the security of the poles was great.
I did the walk about 50 years ago and it was one of the defining moments of my life! A deeply moving and truly wonderful experience. So glad to hear you went up with poles - I'm 72 now … maybe … ! Thank you. Loved the clever music - always ascending!

Hi Alex, thanks for posting this video, just back from a 5 day trip of the ring of Kerry starting in Tralee and ending in Killarney. Wonderful time and visited both the Skellig adventure centre on Valentia Island and the Blasket centre in Dunquin. I don't know how anyone can climb the Skelligs without a proper handrail. I'd be afraid of getting dizzy and falling off. Much respect for your efforts.
I went and im afraid of heights. Its not near as bad as it seems. Just be careful and keep your eyes and mind focused on your steps. Although its breathtaking! And the steps arent as narrow as they seem.
I have had problems climbing 800m hill day earlier but Skellig was fine perhaps because its much shorter trip. Nordic Walking sticks, any stick may be helpful. And yes: focusing on puffins along the trail, resting if required, not forcing oneself would be helpful, too.
Thank you for sharing. We ascended in early September 2021 and were thankful that it was a little sunny after an evening rain. Definitely a climb to take serious.

Thank you for posting this! I took my daughter here when we lived in Germany, but it’s hard to remember everything about it. The sea was very rough that day as we were one of the last boats out before they closed for the season. I think almost everyone on the boat puked. But it was worth the boat ride to see this amazing, unusual place. Such a great memory.
Thank you for watching. Same here, rough sea, almost everyone was sick. Luckily the sea was calm on the way back and we saw dolphins swimming alongside the boat.
One word: "YIKES..!" ... I'm not brilliant with heights and even watching this video (on a big screen) made me feel uneasy. That said, it looks stunning and if ever I get the opportunity to go there and climb to the top, I will ... :)
MagicMonkey10100 It's absolutely worth it. Movie looks much more scary than reality, lenses are distorting reality. I needed help, time to reach 800m hill a day earlier. But Skellig was ok, it was much shorter trip. And the puffins along the trail, within your reach, coming close like robins do...
This is an amazing video, thank you so much for posting. I kinda wish you would have kept the camera rolling after reaching the top to see the site itself but it was still amazing to see the journey. Glad you made it safely.
Magic video dude! I'd love to visit it one day and while there, I'd like to lose myself imagining what ancient people used to think by looking at such natural wonder
@@eddieshevlin1089 :) That's the spirit! I was 50sh when I went there. Two Nordic Walking sticks may help. You will have plenty of time to get there. And along the way you will see these funny birds, at the stretch of your hand. In April you may expect a bit stable weather. I hope you will have perfect one. In case of poor weather all trips are cancelled. You can get there from 3 nearby port towns. With my friends we tried three times. I'd like to go again. Recently, I learned it's one of the seven St. Michael Archangel sanctuaries called The Sword of St. Michael. God bless you and good luck! :)
Well, yes and some railings are possible only on the short part of this trail. it shouldn't be a problem for an average fit person. What you see on the film looks much more scary then it is in reality. But caution is always advisable in any mountains. Since you can get there only if the weather permits sailing these steps should be still ok to climb up and down. There's one path there (closed for a long time) to reach a place with a cross by jumping over 100m deep chasm. Irishmen were promising to go there as a penance.
I'm extremely scared of hights, I think I could make it up there for sure, but walking down the stairs would absolutely make my legs shake and even pass out haha but I really want to go there :( Not because of star wars but because I love ancient places and history.
Thanks for viewing. I didn't even know Star War was filmed here when I joined the trip. I feel scared walking down but after you get used to it, it feels easier than walking up - just look ahead and not fix your eyes on the steps and your feet. Hope you can make the trip one day.

Gotta hand it to those monks. Talk about wanting to be left alone...I'm going to look into starting my own monastery at the top of Everest. (when i get over my fear of heights that is, which will be likely never)
At the top of everest: average survival time of your monks will be 1-2 days :-) (Above 8000m is the "death zone" due to lack of oxygen, you use up more oxygen than you can take in, even with fast breathing. So unless you want to do terraforming with Mt Everest or have a space station there with artificial oxygen-supply, I humbly suggest another place for your next monastery). ;-)
Jaysus Christ, no way I'll be going up those steps. I did the Half Dome cable route and Cloud's Rest in Yosemite (check youtube) but only because a lady friend talked me into it. No one will talk me into doing this.
It's way worse than it looks. Going up is no problem, and if going down becomes an issue you can just sit and scoot down the stairs. Two of my friends are scared of heights and they managed to do it.
On that 90 min. trip to the island on that tiny boat that day, all but the crew has experienced some kind of seasick ... perhaps the sea was particular rough that day. Someone asked that the captain afterwards, "... is it really worthy to endure such a rough sea ride for the visit?" The captain replied with, "... at least you got a story to tell". I agree. For me the toughest thing for the trip is to hold your bladder for half of the day because there is no toilet facility on the island nor the boat.
Alex Ngan thanks for your reply the whole thing is to walk path the cast screw walked for starwars. I would imagine they flew out on private choppers unlike us fans.
We left from Valentia and the trip was about 45 mins from there; a little rough going over; we did not get wet; but coming back, we did get wet, even though the boatman provided us with oilskins; small price to pay. Disembarking a little dicey, just go when the boatman says to.
