videos, transcripts & photos at townsofeurope.... Galway, Connemara and Aran Islands in the west of Ireland and nearby sights. Galway is a lovely town, perfect for strolling along cobble-stone lanes lined with artisans shops, but even more attractive is the adjacent Connemara Peninsula, with Kylemore Abbey and Clifden, which we will thoroughly explore together.

The essence of Irish landscape is the beauty-of green fields bounded by miles of rock walls; ancient stone houses with thatch roofs; cows and sheep wandering freely. This is a wild region of mountains, lakes, tumbling streams, undulating peat bogs, unspoiled beaches, and panoramic views. It is a Gaelic-speaking region that has maintained its traditional character and kept the modern world at bay. The musical accent of the friendly locals will charm your heart in a way you can never forget.
The west of Ireland has for generations been considered one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland and it seems that the beauty of the Connemara scenery is matched by the demeanor of its inhabitants. Galway has been voted the friendliest city in the world in a recent poll.
When you are in Clifden, stop by All Things Connemara for some Irish gifts, or to rent a bicycle for the day.

Here is a story connected with Aran Island sweaters, that was told to me many years ago. Never did get an opportunity to confirm it. In the old days when the islands were quite heavily populated, their main source of food and sustenance was fishing. This was carried out by the islanders using boats made of a wood/canvas combination, named "currachs", extremely light and could be carried by the fishermen up on to dry land after a days fishing. The Atlantic could be very treacherous and many lives were lost over the centuries. The famous Aran Island sweaters were knitted to individually unique patterns which identified the home or family that knitted a particular design. Tradition had it that no Aran Islander ever learned to swim, due to the fact that being a swimmer only prolonged the agony of drowning in the fierce cold Atlantic. When the bodies washed ashore several days later they were identified by the stitched pattern on the bodies'. True or False? I don't know.

    • @denniscallan

yes, that is the famous legend, must be true. Even today fishing in a small boat far at sea is among the most dangerous jobs.

Not exactly Pete. It comes from the Irish 'Gaillimh/Gallaibh' which was like the plural of 'Gall', gall meaning 'foreigner', so gaillimh or gallaibh means foreigners. So Galway was called the town of the foreigners basically.

Going back centuries, Galway- Gaillibh was built and protected by 12 Anglo norman/ Welch families known as the tribes of Galway which appears to have assigned it to the title `` Foreigner`s Way`` .
