- DID NOT MEAN TO SAY CLOCKSPRING FOR THE ENTIRE VIDEO, IT IS JUST THE AIRBAG RETAINER SPRING.
In this video I show how to replace the stock E46 non-m sport steering wheel with one from an E46 M3, steering trim removal, airbag removal, and airbag spring removal. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for future videos!
* Tighten the steering wheel bolt to 65nm or 48 ft/lbs.

your comment is correct at 2:00. battery must be disconnected AND you should wait for 10 minutes to discharge all the capacitors in the electrical circuit that could deploy the airbag. Safety first!. In addition, when putting the airbag in a surface, leave it with inflator connectors down. In the event it deploys for any reason, you will not have a projectile flying with metal in front.
thanks for the info, I'm just getting used to DIY on my 20 e46, your videos are good because they have production value better than many, having a separate camera person/girlfriend is important, also like the FF sections
I really enjoy your videos. Your instruction on how to carry out mods and retrofits make it look so simple.
I don't have an E46 but own a Z3(2001-RHD). Have been trying to figure out how to retrofit an E46 M3 multifunction steering to the Z3, with volume and cruise switches working. Am hoping with your deep knowledge with BMW cars, you may know how this could be done.
Excellent as usual. Thank you. I just did this mine with your help.
Hi, like your videos. FYI, metal plate on the wheel is the horn plate. Push on it and Spring’s compress to activate the horn. The clock spring is in the column.
Yooo Cuz shot for the free content learning more every day
When i changed from standart to sport wheel i spent 2 hours trying to get the airbag out from the sport wheel. When i changed from sport to m wheel the whole work was done in about 5 minutes. Its super easy, just practice makes perferct
informative as always. Thanks Jason.
Great video mate.
Keep it up :)
Awesome DIY! Thank you very much!
U made the Best Videos!!! Thank you
I have a stage 1 steering wheel airbag and i'm trying to fit a stage 2 but my 1999 e46 coupe dash warning light stays on, any ideas please.
Hi i want change my steering wheel of my e46 with the aftermarket one. Is the adoptor of an e36 bosskit is the same as e46?
Thanks for the channel it's awesome! I have a 325i wagon E46. I have the "H" style wheel with the CC and audio controls. I want to put on the M sport package or the M3 steering wheel, I found a E39 wheel that's in perfect shape and it's cheap. My questions
1- will the E39 wheel work?
2- knowing what wheel I have and what I'm wanting to do, will the wheel I want be "plug&play" or will I have to start swapping/modifying stuff?
Thanks for your help!!
This may be a late comment but a good video. Very interesting and helpful. I have a Sport steering wheel on my E46 Cab but can imagine I would break clips and things if I tried it!
Solved:
Hey guys.
It is much easier if you use a 3/16 square nose punch than a flat blade.
Set the wheel straight.
Start on the side left of the steering wheel.
Insert the punch through the slit in the rubber indentation on the back of the wheel.
The direction of insertion is from vehicle left to right (as opposed to forward or up, just trying to be extra clear)
You are trying to find a spring that will push back at you.
You need to insert the punch about 1"
Once you have found it:
Use your left hand to push punch and compress the spring
Wrap the fingertips of your right hand around the left side of the air bag and pry it out enough where you can let go of the spring and it will be free.
Repeat this on the right side and the air bag will pop out.
The spring is kind of like a giant paper clip. The part you push on is the side of the spring like pushing on the side of a cylinder, not the end. A flat blade screwdriver will slip off the cylinder almost every time unless you have it oriented just right. The punch solves this slipping issue easily.
Good luck :)
Gearhead Todd
really good video you covered everything I'm waiting for my M5 wheel yes I said M5 the E39 M5 wheel is the same you could have mentioned that in the video so they can have a wider search in case cant find M3 wheel just get an M5 one. Cant wait!

I put my air bag in and it’s off center now. It’s also one of the Takata recalled ones BAM xxx - 1085. I’m worried that the new wheels plate is off bent or something. Could that cause it to go off? I’m getting the recall hopefully taken care of soon
Do u have a video for doing a oil pan gasket for 02 325xi wagon?
Is there a video showing how to wire in the paddle shifters?
is it possible to wire the paddle shifters to a normal automatic transmission? Because I've found 2 diffrent steering wheels 1 with the paddles and 1 without. I just want to be sure that the paddle shifters will work on a normal automatic transmission.
man awesome, you should do a video on how to replace the stock bmw steering wheel with no function with multifunction steering wheel with buttons that would be awesome!
How would you connect the paddle shifters???
Does the paddles even work with the steptronic shifting?
You should make a video changing the AC blower motor!!
You are the best!!! Thx this chanel, we buy a bmw, last day. But I do not know e39 or e46.I would like the government to replace him, the first digital climate, a lot of videos to help him.

Don't have a car yet. But really enjoy learning from your videos man. Keep it up
@ I had one for three weeks until someone crashed and wrecked into me at an intersection. I got a pretty good check from the insurance, bought a van, a new dirt bike, and took a road trip along the pacific north west for a month. Im 21 now, and decided id purchase another one once I have the financial stability to deck it out completely how I would like without being broke.
@ Hell yeah, thanks dude
In UK the m3 wheel is what comes with the sport package, the other one is standard.
I can't fkn feel the spring when I put the screw driver in the hole and I'm going fkn Insane !!! Ahhhhh
J'ai un problème avec mon klaxon ça ne fonctionne plus les fusible et relais sont bonne les klaxon aussi juste pas de contact quand j'appuie ?
Hi
Thanks so much for all your videos!
I have the standard wheel (with the controls) that this video shows at 8:29. Will i be able to replace it with the same M3 wheel and air bag that you have put into this car?
Thanks
Hi, did you swap?
Would you be kind to assist on how to retrofit a multifunction steering like the one you did on a BMW Z3 M54-2001.
Sorry I meant to say to fit same multifunction M steering to a Z3 instead. Hope you can help. Thanks.
I like the standard one more
I did the thing but my controls not working and the air bag don’t fit perfectly
nice vid thanks
Can you do a video on how to remove and replace the driver/passenger seats as well as the rear seats?
Hey I have videos on how to do that on my channel
I got to say, I am impressed, I have an e46 330i zhp with the alantra wheel and the leather is all crudded up, I would love to do this mod to my car. Do have a clutch video for a 6 speed e46?
+Nick Torres Thanks! I love the alcantara wheel! And no I do not have a diy on the clutch as of now. Thanks for watching!
I have 2004 320i E46 wanted to swap the steering wheel. Can i use the M3 wheels for that mine doesn't have any buttons on the steering
Selwyn Casaclang did you swap?
just watched your video on diy steering wheel swap. can the paddles be hooked up to work. I have a 2002 325ci automatic with the sport package steering wheel. I'm interested in knowing if it could be done on my car. it would be interesting. thanks for the videos they're a lifesaver. they've helped more then you can imagine. hope you can keep making them. good luck in cali.
You can hook them up to the steptronic function on e46 autos. You will have to do some wiring, it has been documented on the forums. Thanks! and many more videos to come!
mi gusta mucho explicas muy específico grasias
hi, what about wheel with single stage airbag...old one, triangle..want to swap to newer wheel :D
Hi man, did you swap?
Can I change my e46 standard steering weell for a sport one?
did u ever find out lol
Do you need all clock springs lulz ?
Man I have a question..
If i have the old "square" steering wheel and I want to upgrade to this ones, are the same conexions?? will the airbag bulb pop out as a error??
Thx
Yordan Radkov yea man you can, as long as the original airbag is a dual stage (two connector plugs)
I don't understand how people can change Sport steering wheel to M3 which has rekt M3 logo instead of 2 sexy legs at the bottom :D
Me too :D I thought I`m the only one
Same. Although I am jealous of the M3 steering wheel's M-color stitching and apparently it is slightly thicker as well.
Honestly about to switch mine out due to comfort alone. I love the look of both wheels, however I find the sport wheel way too thin and uncomfortable
I think also that sport package steering wheel looks better than m3
If I put a M3 steering wheel on my 325i, is there a way to hook up the paddle shifters to use them instead?
Yes there is I plan on making a video on it
how can you make paddles function will it respond to the non m3 model?
Salvador Rodriguez you cant. lol
Is it possible to add the M trim piece on the bottom of the steering wheel to a NON M ?
W S no
is this a e46 coupe or sedan? I noticed it has the wood trim across the door also and mine doesn't.
It is a sedan
Great vid, however the part you changed over into the M3 wheel is not called the clockspring. It's just an airbag retainer. The clockspring is the part in the steering column, behind the wheel, that the wires plug into.
Can you make a video about monting fog lights on bmw e46
yes, ill add it to my list
can you help me how to connect wires i would like to turn on front and rear fog lights because i dont have to switches on light control pannel
Hi,
any updates on doing a video for hooking up the SMG paddles?
I figured it out and now I have the paddle shifting steering wheel on my 2006 330ci Convertible ZHP. pretty easy but I would like to thank you for this video as it was a big help.
How did u do. this?
wow its harder than i think i just thought if u wanna change the wheel just screwdriver and move the screw
how to replace a "H" steering wheel to a m3 style?
PLEASE HELP!
do you need a whole new harness or how it works?
thanks!
+Carlos Ponce Does your wheel have the volume control and cruise control?
+ShopLifeTV yes it does!
NICE hoodie and toboggan. NCSU!!!!
@shoplifetv will the paddles work on a 330 auto.will it shift the gears I mean???
If you just have a standard automatic 330, then no the paddles won't work because you don't have an SMG transmission. The paddles are for the SMG transmission. If you already have an SMG transmission, you can wire these paddles to work the way the paddles on your previous wheel worked.
Kyle Bybee gotcha thanks
Did the same thing on my E46 but the airbag light got on... how can i make it go away ?
You will have to use pa soft or inpa to erase it
Great Video Mate, I own a 330ci and the steering i have doesnt has the Controls on it.. And i have seen a M3 Steering which has the controls on it too but i have been wondering if i can connect/use those Buttons if i Swap My steering wheel?
+mujib ahmad Thanks! What year is your 330ci? It should have multifunction controls even if it is the non sport steering wheel.
Its 2001.
+ShopLifeTV why the Fuck would you put an m3 steering wheel on that ,acting like your dope or sum shit
Bro! its not about being dope or shit, its more about how he likes the car to be and tbh a thicker steering wheel feels way better than a tiny one.
does anyone one know where i can get a steering wheel that has the bmw stitching? not a m steering wheel. i just want the Stitching?
+bmworld Go to cobywheel.com/ They provide refinished steering wheels, you can customize what you want as well.
+ShopLifeTV sweet nice i well check it out :-)
shut up
My car is a 325xi 2003 facelift, will an m3 steering wheel like the one you installed be compatible?
I'm sure you've already found out, but the E46 is practically made of Legos when it comes to swapping parts from other BMW models. You can swap a sport, M3, M5, etc wheel from another BMW no problem; hell you can even drop in some E46 M3 coupe seats if you're feeling real sporty (they're basically bolt-in beyond swapping the seat belts). After the mid 90s BMW started using a lot of modular components that remain backwards compatible, so it's easy to upgrade all kinds of things in an E46.
In my '03 Xi I've swapped an E90 mirror (better dimming w/compass and homelink), last model OEM E46 radio (the last couple years offer MP3 CD compatibility, they're pretty expensive though; recently switched to an Android unit personally), last model OEM E46 HVAC (heater controls; the last model allows it to be mounted lower so you can install a double din radio), lighted 5-speed shift knob, homelink (rolling code version), some alarm components (motion and tilt sensors; requires coding, easily done with BMW Scanner which is like $30), and a bunch of other little OEM upgrades here and there.
Next on my to do list is a set of sport seats w/power lumbar, an X5 steering wheel (heated yo!) since I don't like the sport wheels, and a 6-speed swap eventually as my syncro for 2nd is starting to get tired. The OEM ECU (DME) is also flashable/hacked now, and bolt-on turbo kits are recently available, so the sky's the limit there. Glad I bought a 325, I can drop in most of the M3 goodies I like, make plenty of power (disco potato anyone?), plus get AWD as a bonus; all without getting raped alive by my insurance and at half the cost of an actual M3. Sure it won't be a real M3, but who cares, it's my winter beater after all XD Good luck with all your mods :)
Thank's a lot for your reply and no I had not yet found out for sure if it would work.
Wow! Awesome information! A manual swap will be your hardest modification ever. a lot of coding, and you really have to know the car inside out. I'm sure you can do it, it's just insane from what i've heard
The 6-speed swap isn't too bad for the E46, and since I'm already a 5-speed manual it'll be a bit less work. No doubt if I was an automatic it'd be a longer project even with the guides and actually require some coding with BMW Scanner/NCS Expert. Being a manual from the get-go it's only a reflash so cruise will work in 6th, and a couple map changes in the ROM to set it for the 2.5L since the 6-speed ROM will be for the 3.0L. The gearing is almost identical 1-5, the 6-speed just adds overdrive, but the larger flywheel and clutch assembly from the 330Xi is better suited to hold the power when boost comes into play. Not to mention I'm real tired of sitting at 3500RPM on the expressway every day; only BMW would make a 5-speed where 5th is 1:1 with no overdrive in this day and age XD
I'm sure it's going to be a job, but compared to swapping my Stealth from the 5-speed to the 2g 6-Speed which required swapping the entire drivetrain (trans, transfer case, driveshaft, rear diff, shift cables, etc) this ought to be a cake-walk! Sad part is that a performance clutch for the 6-speed costs more than the transmission... E46 parts may be reasonably cheap, but the aftermarket sure isn't; gotta pay that BMW tax one way or another XD Good luck with your mods :)
hi would a 325I or 330I e46 make a good first car?
+Daniel A It would make a great first car as long as you buy one that has a good maintenance history as these cars can get expensive quick if you have to pay someone to fix everything. I learned everything on my own car, so if you are willing to learn and have access to the tools you should be fine.
has anyone installed an m3 smg wheel into a non m smg e46?
+Michael Rivera I have installed one into my gf's auto 325. The smg paddles will not work unless you add some wiring for it to trigger the steptronic shifter.
Can I replace my H style steering wheel to the M3 style steering wheel ?
Sergio Hinojosa yes
Do the paddle shifters have any function from this installation?
No sir, the wheel came off of a smg m3.
You can retrofit the paddles to work! There are DIYs for that on youtube
Can you post a link to where this was purchased?
Just type on ebay "bmw e46 m3 steering wheel" >.
Confused my 325ci sport coupe has a thick-ish steering wheel with hand grips and a solid bottom just like that one...do I have an M3 wheel? Surely not, it just has black double stitching and no paddles that's the only difference
KartRacer 01 it’s not an M3 wheel you have no. It’s an M sport one.
It's cool mine looks exactly the same just without the flappy paddle, thought it'd be a bigger difference not just paddles added.
Still confused as to why his M sport wheel is horrible lol not thick at all, no hand grips, no M badge at the bottom, that nasty gap in the middle. Looks like a standard one to me
In the UK the one you have is the bottom of the Range poverty spec wheel. The M sport wheel here is the same as the M3 wheel, but doesn’t have the tri colour stitching. I had your wheel on my very bottom of the range (although highly modified now) ES. but now it’s full on M3 and a one off buddy
