If you haven't done this yet but plan to, let me give you some helpful tips. Use two needles and do a "baseball stitch" but instead of using the yarn as a way of connecting, use the holes the red yarn is coming thru to do it. Use upholstery thread. It's super strong and comes in all colors and won't fray like the yarn does. Extra needles are super cheap. Look for embroidery needles. Instead of the double sided tape, use DAP contact cement. A Small can will be all you need. Lightly apply the contact cement to both the steering wheel and the leather, and once it's "dry" you press the two pieces together. You can also use contact cement for the outer parts of the steering wheel. This helps prevent the leather from slipping around when it's stitched together. I've seen professional auto upholsterers do it this way and that's the way I do it as well. You can do a custom wrap over your factory cracked wood with leather to match the steering wheel as well with contact cement. Very useful, but it stinks so use in a well ventilated area!
Did mine this weekend. Top tip with these kits, as she did here, take the steering wheel off. It’s easy to do and let’s you make a far better job of it, at a table, with good light, in comfort. I’ve done it both ways, trust me on this. As for results, the better the cut material, the better the outcome. I followed the instructions too and I’m not sure what is to be gained by different stitching or different adhesive. My steering wheel was pretty bad and had chunks of leather missing. I filled the holes with thick card and wound electrical tape tight around the card. This was more or less flat and once covered you’d never know in terms of feel or look.
Oookay. This Chick is the full package , she muscles tires around the shop, completely dismantles an interior out of a transformer caught in mid flight, yanks the engine out of her own car,now stitches an aftermarket steering wheel cover that looks awesome. 🗣ALL THIS WHILE ROCKING PINK NAIL POLISH!!! Selena you rock👍🏾. You should demand a raise from Shoplife.😂😂Get one for Fluffy while you're at it.😂
I have installed several Wheelskins, which are by far the best quality product of this type. I quickly learned to wear thin deerskin gloves, as your hands get pretty beat up without them. Stitches need to be pulled up tightly and uniformly. A hair dryer helps to make the leather a bit more flexible where needed. Patience is required, I would allow 2 hours for the job.
Que patient, and good color combo with the thread. I could never be patient enough and would see all of my mistakes. May find a shop to rewrap my wrx wheel, details like this make a huge difference.
This is worth the money if you ask me, I would say if you decide to do it on your own M3 steering wheel selena, scrap the crappy sewing needle and look for a round sewing needle! Usually a local store like Joanne's has them for cheap and they'd do fantastic on a job like this. Best of luck !
I have a canvas shop i have made lots of upholstery i specialize on boats but recently bought e36 and interior was bad the wheel is my next task this gave me a good Idea in what's involved very help full thank you
I appreciate you introducing me to this kit but I think if I had the money I would spend the $300 and have it perfect. Those minor flaws would bug me knowing that they were there. That's just me though. It looks too "Aftermarket" for my brain. You are inspiring a bunch of folks to work on their vehicles. I love it when people say BMW's are too expensive to fix. Not if you do the work yourself and watch RUclips instruction videos. Thank you for posting all your content. It is appreciated.
A few points 1. The wrap will make the steering thicker and the grip will feel different 2. Use a hair dryer to blow hot air around the edges and corners while pressing them to get a nice looking good fit. 3. The perforated type is nice to look at but will gather dirt and grime and is not quite wipe to clean 4. Do not.use thinner to clean the wrap or the center pad as it will decolorise the parts.
I got something similar for my mazda 6 and i love it. The steering wheel was in perfect condition so I only got it to get a matte leather finish with some perforation as the original was glossy leather.
On the section where's loose you can use a heat gun and that'll shrink the leather at least enough to make it look a bit cleaner. Also on your ends specially where's you said it was a bit short you could use crazy glue under it so it doesn't start peaking off and or it rips from regular use. Believe it or not the stealing wheels do take a pretty good beating so taking this little extra steps can extend the life expectancy of your upgrade. Anyways, nice product review video! 😊
I saved your video for future reference when I do the same thing to my Benz,,,,, so I’ll be spending some time w/ you and Your fingers when I’m ready to do mine! Thank you for taking the time to show me how it’s done the right way? Your the woman!!!!!!!
Awesome job. A lot of work but so much better than not doing it. Plus, you cleaned up the steering wheel with the "M" logo. I came across your channel by accident but glad I did.
yeah not bad at all, makes the wheel come back to life. I got one from a company called mewant on Amazon for $25 for my z4 , and luckily for me, the leather was cut exactly to spec so I just removed the old leather completely and currently sewed on half of the steering wheel cover on. And it's fitting perfectly being to be tucked in everywhere and no bulges. But yeah good job great product to make it look great again.
Amazing your channel is blowing up! Interesting product, one of the best I've seen in recent years. I still would get my wheels professionally done though, too much OCD to deal with something that's only a 7/10 in my opinion.
honestly it is very refreshing to see a woman as commited as her in the car community. Not because men would be boring or there aren't any women, it's just that for different reasons women just haven't "come out" and made much content. You rock girl.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention! I think this is an awesome investment for under $50. I'm buying three of these custom leather Steeringwheel wraps for each of my E46s
i live in Shanghai let me know if you need other spares. i'm sure other suppliers have similar products. but you did a great job making it fit all things considered. taking the wheel off is the way to go
Well done, and you are creative lady, the mistake that you done is you must tight three corners before you start sewing to let all corners in correct positions, anyone can do mistake from the first time, but as I seen that you are clever and creative lady, and you show us the mistake that you have done, a few people say I made a mistake.
I will defenetly try this out if they have it in Alcantara Leather. I since I have to stich it myself and it wouldn't look like from factory I try black yarn so it wouldn't show. Keep up thee good work, love you. Greetings from Germany
very cool. didn't know they have diy kit like this. i need to re-wrap a steering wheel on a W208 CLK...wonder if they have the matching gray leather for that car.
Absolute hero for effort. I would remove the old layer of the leather though. To my taste it now looks too thick. Personally I prefer OEM look (thinner).
Selena you are a one of a kind girl Ankur is a lucky boy. U both have a gift with BMW's and i love watching u both working together on projects. long live Shoplife and BMWSelena..
Really interesting, but doesn't twist it while you drive it? i just ordered something similar for my e36 steering wheel and was thinking to put some spray glue to set it in place before stitching... Can't wait to try it (and drive it again... 😢)
I have 2012 5series and I got the steering leather also .. but what concerns me is that how do I reset my steering wheel functions, and taking off the steering wheel dose it effect the auto park function??
I have a 2000 740I with the slim steering wheel but would like to have it wrapped. Is there a wrap for that type of steering wheel? I only have 17,000 miles on it so I really don’t want to replace it so I’m really hoping a wrap is possible. Thank you.
i didn't knw you also had a channel... Thats awesome, you guys make an awesome team... I've lerned alot wth shop life... im subscribe to both now... keep it up n God bles y'all!!!
I I love the bmws ❤️❤️theyre so popular in america and out and so easy to modify and very nice looking and have so much options and everyone loves them❤️❤️❤️
Good monring, Looking at buying a 2013 X3, but everywhere I red people are saying BMWs are one of the most expensive cars to maintain. Is this true, or can one offset maintenance costs by doing some work yourself? Please advise. Would an extended warranty be a good buy in your opinion? Cheers
Nice job, I did it 2 years ago and it's still good. You need patience to do it right though. Personally I'd have used carbon finish instead of colour paint for the centre piece.
bought the same kit for 25bucks from aliexpress.com Gotta say its pretty good. I like it. The way you stitched them is way different from the instruction that came with mine. first it was single thread not double thread that was used on the instruction on mine which I did the same, the alignment came a lot closer than yours did but still not perfect (maybe one to two loop off).
I think if U use some adhesive spray in some areas that need it, should work well... U'll have to blue tape the areas that U don't want sprayed so it doesn't get too messy...
I think to get a perfect finished job its better to follow another clip elsewhere which shows how to measure and cut a piece out and then stitch it.It will be better at the 'ears' of the steering wheel and the edges will be pulled together by thread to be flush and level at the stitching with each other
How is the fabric holding up after 1.5 year of use? Does the leather shift around? Would you use other type of adhesives underneath to secure it or are the 3M tapes enough to secure it?

By far the best and most detailed video i’ve watched, i just received my wrap today and i’m going to slap it on tomorrow 🤞🏽
You did a great job! As with all car things, no one will ever see the small stuff :)

I bought e46 2 weeks ago. Best choice ever x) Keep going with these videos please =)
U just gave me the confidence to try this with my x5 thank you

Thank you for the video. How has the leather held up so far?
I feel like for the thumb grip areas id probably fabricate some kind of padding to make it more bolstered and more comfortable.
I'm amazed that you were able to do this with nail extensions.
Also, has this material held up?
Absolute hero for effort. I would remove the old layer of the leather though. To my taste it now looks too thick. Personally I prefer OEM look (thinner).
Thank you and I actually did this to another steering wheel that had the oem leather already off and the wrap was too loose :(
I love e46, you just earned a subscriber
Damn that looks bad ass! I could listen to you install it all day
Looks great, it gives it the oem look. Great job
Why am I watching this when I should be sleeping, I don't even have a car.
Nice Nails. Thanx, finally a good tutorial on sewing leather wrap

Wow. That really looks like a new BMW wheel.
I learned a lot...you are a good teacher tbh.
grate job showing how to do it you rock.
You're my hero. I needed this video so much!
What if the wheel's original leather covering is damaged and needs to be removed; can this be used to replace the original covering?

You just made a new fan and subscriber Selena. Nice job!
what did you use to touch up the plastic where the black paint was coming off
great job! as always with these kinds of tasks its a learning process you will always improve the next time and learn from mistakes.

I think it came out great! Selena is the perfect catch! :)
What paint did you use to refinish the steering wheels worn plastic part?
Dang, looks good. Carbon fiber wrap the inner part of the wheel and it would like really great!
Hi Selena, how did you make the plastic part clean and shiny???
Please let me know it is important for me
Salena , thank you for the link , i ordered one hopefully it will be here soon . Thank you for your time .
Do you think it would have a better fit and finish if the original leather was taken off?
No i tried that with another steering wheel and the cover ended up being too loose so I had to stuff it with something
Ebay link please for the exact trim you have used in this video.
Thank you in advance.
Great work. The wrapping on my wheel is coming off so I'll do this instead of replacing the whole thing.
Nice work!!! Took much patience I bet.
Nice job, I did it 2 years ago and it's still good.
You need patience to do it right though.
Personally I'd have used carbon finish instead of colour paint for the centre piece.
Very nice video and skills! Really helps. How is it holding now after ~3 years?
any update how it holds up?
How did you repaint the steaming plastic cover

I used this stitching method because that is the method that BMW uses. Sorry forgot to mention.
Very helpful video, I think I might need to use this for my 330ci. My steering wheel has definitely been dealing with some intense sun damage.
So do you leave the existing leather on and wrap on top of it?
Yes
You did a fantastic job for your first time. Love your outlook on what you will have a go at.
I think if U use some adhesive spray in some areas that need it, should work well... U'll have to blue tape the areas that U don't want sprayed so it doesn't get too messy...

is this ok for other brands of cars
Could you use contact adhesive on the old wheel and new cover then sew it together?
WOW... you did an excellent job, I don't think I have the patience :P
Thats sick! Gonna try this out on my car soon!
I was trying to buy something from your merchandise but the website don't work
How is the wrap holding up after 6 months of use?
Would fitment be better if i remove the old leather?
I tried that with another steering wheel cover and it was too loose :/
@@BMWselena ahhh i see, thanks for the info!

selena tell me which is your favorite BMW from the 80s?
How is the fabric holding up after 1.5 year of use? Does the leather shift around? Would you use other type of adhesives underneath to secure it or are the 3M tapes enough to secure it?
Is there something like this for BMW E30 325is model steering wheel ?
Great job!!! You are very good at explaining the steps.
Can I get mine in Alcantra with blue stripe?? I think that should look good on a 335 Msport.
By the way Selena I'm a good looking dude, lots of fun, and newly single. What up?? Lol.
Would it be better to sew through the leather as well.
