I might be late to the party but same. I'll look at a character and ask myself, "do I want to BE WITH that character or do I want to BE that character?" Keeps me up at night.

I had a similar experience, except they told me that I should be on Game of Thrones! Yeah don't know what to make of that either haha
Assuming the woman in the pictire is you.I can see it.
How are u verified???
You do tbh.
Whenever my director needs someone to play a dumb blonde, she comes to me.
It's a blessing and a curse.
Vii you're the next Kate Rockwell lol
You could totally play Ellen woods then if u also had the vocal range for it
*Gretchen, is that you?*
I'm the opposite of a dumb blonde but holy shit i want to play one
Livleigh you mean Karen, right?
Why hello. You have found the 13 year old who only plays moms.

nahh 💀
You referenced Legally Blonde and Heathers in one sentence I love you
My type is ALWAYS headstrong.
I'm either the bitchy pseudo villain or the intelligent, motivated, and lowkey caring female protagonist (like. I'm Heather Chandler or Elizabeth Bennett or Vivienne Kensington or Mary Bailey.)
PS YOU ARE SO STINKIN ADORABLE!
+Missy Minnick Ooh, yes!! What a great casting type!! (And thank you!! 💕😊 you're too sweet!!)
Same honestly
Missy Minnick heyyy I’m in legally blonde rn!
Same here!
My casting type has always been ensemble or the stereotypical fat character because of my weight, my vocals haven't really been appreciated very much because the first thing directors see is 'too fat' for leading roles, so I've started dieting because I want to find my /true/ casting type and ngl I'm really looking forward to losing this weight to find out what kind of role I look best for :)
I'm rooting for you!!! :D I'm kinda overweight too but I'm lucky cause right now I'm auditioning for Ursula lol. But I'd probably never be Ariel, or Heather... or Heather... or Heather xD
This is me too, we got this ❤️
Idk if it makes you feel any better, but Kate Winslet got told in school that she would only ever get "the fat girl parts". She has a really good speech about it, actually. Good luck to you!
Anji Barrett-Chalk dumbasses
Audition for Tracy in Hairspray ❤️❤️ also it’s not bad to be big, often bigger is better
Im usually the villain's slightly gay sidekick or the main young boy charecter.
For example:
LeFou,
Flotsam or Jetsam,
a Wickersham brother,
Jack,
Oliver,
or Charlie Bucket.
My casting type is very specific...
Stranger In Pink OMG CHARLIE BUCKET IM DEAAAD
i'm 14 and always gets cast as a mom i hate it lol
LES FROM NEWSIES?!
Charlie counts as slightly gay alright
same
on day i hope that i could just sit down with Katherine and have a cup of coffee and just talk ya know?:)
AWWWWWW! thank you :)
Hanna Mitchell Me too!
I've recently realized that I'm really good at playing a villain, and I'm pretty good at playing the innocent one. One problem. IM AN ALTO. There are SO few alto roles out there. Thankfully, they are mostly people I can play, such as Madame Morrible and Mortica Addams.
Im an alto and im auditioning as miss hannigan
spacetrashpile I believe heather duke is an alto.
Elphaba
This video helped me a lot while going out for an audition at a local theater for “Newsies”. I’m a short young girl, but I hid my hair in a cap, and wore very lose clothing to change my usual type. I’m so happy I made ensemble and Les understudy and I wanna thank you so much for your amazing advice. You’re absolutely amazing and I cannot thank you enough for every video you make. Thursday is now my favorite day of the week.
B G Newsies is my dream! I keep begging my drama teacher to let us do it year after year. Congrats!
Lalulila Lavilly
Thank you! I was thrilled when I heard that it was happening, and I wanted to audition immediately but the website said “you have to be 14 or older” to audition. I was super sad so I emailed the director and told him about my background in acrobatics and dance and I was allowed to audition! I’m soooo excited!!!
I have an audition for Newsies tomorrow! I won’t get into gender politics but I’m assigned female. I’m not really worried about it being a difficult part since I’ve already got short hair and a lower voice, so the hard part is just gonna be convincing them I can play a male role well lol
I have a Newsies audition coming up for my school play and I’m going for Crutchie or Spot!
Bridget Godfrey I'm a girl auditioning to be in newsies soon at my community theater, I have never done theater professionally so I don't know if I will be considered. Tips?
“I’m not really good at sexy”

I had to play a boy in my last high school production, I was really really heartbroken. I felt really bad about myself. I felt like I wasn’t “pretty enough” to play a girl. But once I got into the character I was able to both, relate to him and separate myself from him. Playing that character was so different from who I actually am. He was a “bad boy”, he was the heartthrobs best friend. After talking to my director about how I felt so bad about myself playing a boy, she said “hailey we casted you as a boy, because you’re the only one who can do it, all the other girls wouldn’t be able to pull it off.” Which is a huge compliment. Anyways, even though I saw it as a bad experience at first, I learned to love the character I was playing.
I know this is like a year late but just look at Lauren Lopez's Draco Malfoy, iconic

Prefer playing villains because I tend to think they're more interesting but I never really thought I had a type.
My look says “Oh, she’s the kid! Cast her as the kid!”
But when they hear me sing
“Oh, she’s a tenor....”
I'm an Alto and I always play the worrisome, nerdy, friend character. (ex. martha dunstock, kelsi from hsm.) though, i have gotten a couple moments where i've been the sassy, headstrong, and witty character (sharpay, cheshire cat)
i just finished a show as kelsi!! i was so scared of being stuck in the worrisome cast type haha. i hope i get as lucky as you! (but then again, you don't have to hide your nerves onstage when you're playing someone who always looks afraid haha)
I was always the same character type in high school. The short sassy spitfire thing. Little Red in ITW, Essie in You Can't take it With you, Terk in Tarzan.
💗💗 That's so much fun!
J
I played a goofy evil aunt in a fat suit one show, and a strong and bold heroine in the next... talk about contrast lol
😂😂
this sounds like sponge from james and the giant peach
Same 🙌 10 years of theater and the only lead role I've ever gotten was Aunt Sponge in James
I’m guessing Sponge ?
i was spiker once!! i love the aunts in JATGP

I went to an arts school for most of my elementary school years. They always casted the same three girls. Eventually I transferred schools and in eighth grade I starred as Maria in The Sound Of Music. It was really great to have finally been given a chance. I can’t wait to audition for more roles! I have a feeling I’ll often be casted as children because I’m 5’0 and have a relatively high voice.
I’m pretty sure my cast type is ‘who hasn’t been cast’ 😂 😂
For me, you can pretty much just tick any box that's dorky/nerdy/geeky, and soft spoken shy guy, basically any beta male and/or comedic relief character you can think of, I can do. However, as a guy, I have yet to gain a single shred of muscle, so I can't be any kind of intimidating gangster, or Mr. All-American Badass
Me: a mezzo soprano to top soprano, 5"1 and chubby with large bust.
Can't play children, bc bust😂
Can't play grown adults because short and stopped growing😂
Casting director: literally what do we even do with her?😂
And with long hair and my glasses I look like Melissa McCarthey (especially in Ghostbusters) which I'm flattered by💁🏻
There are a lot of roles for short adult females though (Mostly moms, aunts, etc. in period musicals, aka every cast member in Bye Bye Birdie...) And having a high vocal range helps a lot too.
You just described me! I was Tracy, and that's about it for our type. one community theatre director only sees me as the "mom", had to force him to see me as Wednesday Addams. (got it ;)
Hunter Cuyler I guess. I'll have to settle for those when I'm older as I can't really play an older character at my current age or mid 20s when I'm hopefully in the industry😬
I FEEL THAT
I've had trouble getting comedy roles even though this is what I do best because a) I'm a tenor and b) I have what my friends refer to as "resting psycho face". A combo which tends to get me cast as sort of sexy/scary villains/anti-heroes. The closest I'm likely to get to comedy is Orin in Little Shop of Horrors or J.D. in Heathers.
I am so ready #TheatreThursdayFam world domination. That's all I gotta say about that. 💗

Katherine Steele I loved it lol
Wait where-
I've never played a role in a musical, but I'm a mezzo and my face looks young. Like for example if I played Veronica in Heathers I'd know how to play/sing the character but I don't look like the type to play character. Gaaahhhh!!
omg #TheStruggle!!!! Trying changing up your wardrobe/hair/makeup! :)
This is the second video ive watch on this channel and im so glad i found it, you've really made me feel better about become an actress.
Its a dream of mine and im stressed out about how to even start, so thank you for "shinning some light" on this situation im in❤️
The first ever production I was in was my high school’s spring musical, Legally Blonde. I was cast as Vivienne Kensington. In a week or so, I’ll be auditioning for Heathers and I’ve heard (from multiple people, including the Student Director and the Vocal Director) that I’ll probably be cast as Heather Chandler. Guess I’m gonna have that permanent stigma for the mean girl 😅 I think I have a shot for Veronica though... not gonna lie.
Favorite day of the week amiright??!! #TheatreThursdayfam Super helpful! I had a pretty good grasp of the characters I can play, but honestly I could watch you talk about calculus and still be entertained! ha ily

Oh hey funny seeing you here
Everything you're saying makes so much sense!!! However, the only thing that sucks is people of color get automatically cast as certain things just because of their race. Which is terrible, because personally even if you're style depends on your appearance (of course) I don't think basing off of race is okay, I guess I think they're different? I'm not saying you were talking about that or anything of course, but I just thought I'd say that I think basing a type off of race sucks the most about type casting : TTT (Unless they mention their race in the show then lolol that all good, like in hairspray) But that's just something I'd like to mention!
**btw that was in no way hate or saying you were saying anything racist in any way shape or form!!! : '' OO I love you and your video's, it was just something I thought was worth mentioning from personal experience!
Haha I’m latina and an alto/mezzo so most of the time I’m typecast into overt “spicy” characters 😅. I can do white (or non-racially codes) characters if they’re the sarcastic, headstrong brunette type
I love watching these videos because you’re so friendly and fun to listen to!

I've played everything from shy, lovesick heroines to old ladies to the villain. I've been told by casting directors I'm pretty versatile. But the parts I feel the most comfortable in playing are always the sassy, snarky characters. It suits my physical appearance in a way too, haha

I was hoping you might be able to help me out. I'm a female and I also happen to be a strong tenor. I can hit the lower notes of an alto range, but definitely not the upper ones. And my problem is I always audition for male roles, but I never get cast because they want a 'real guy'. And it's truly disheartening because even though I love theater, and I'm incredibly passionate about it, I can never land a role as a male character because of the fact I have female anatomy lol. I'd appreciate if you have any advice that may help!
SarChasm Lord I'm the exact same way. I can usually match the low notes for male roles (I can match most notes in female roles too but that's besides the point. I was gifted with a decently large range which I'm like super grateful for lol) and all of my favourite dream roles are male roles. I NEVER get cast for them because I'm female. Like seriously if I got the chance to snap my fingers and just turn male right now I would.
I was cast as male before so just keep trying
Musical theater "alto": Mezzo-soprano without the high notes
This is completely my same situation!
this video helped me a lot!! i've been struggling with what my type might be because i've been cast as motherly characters, but i've also been ingenues. so it's a bit difficult trying to find my type, and it depends on the director, too. but this is helping!! thanks! :)
+1011Koolkatty happy to help!! 💕🦄
I love your room it brings back gooood memories from childhood. FUZZY PILLOWS!!!
When I was ten, I could belt, I was also a hardcore soprano (by hardcore I meant my voice was as high as Ariana Grande's voice) and I was auditioning for a musical, and somebody pointed at me and said "This play is 8+, go find your mommy and stand with her." So I said "I'm 10." So they said "No your not sweetie, go find your mom." Oh, did I mention I was really short? Well I was. So, I went to get my mom and I had to have her confirm that I was ten. I was casted as a five year old, but at least I was the lead role, btw the play was about a five year old who had to manage through kindergarten, while her home life was falling apart.
What show was it?
Hello, i need some advice ;-; next year my school is doing Phantom of the opera next year. And i would love to be Christine. the only thing I'm concerned about is that I've been the lead for three years in a row. And i don't know if they will still pick me to be the lead ;-;
+Katie Block Hey Katie-- I wouldn't worry about that (mainly because you have no control over it). Focus on your training & audition prep instead 💕
My casting type is "the rich bitchy mean girl" well I love it. Maybe one day I can play Heather Chandler or Regina George.

You mention hair being part of your type in your other video. Question: Would it be weird to wear a wig to an audition? I have very short hair, which gives me a very specific look. I own lots of wigs though and can look extremely different with hair.
That would be a good idea based on the role you want to play
I have super long brunette hair 😭 my community theater is doing the Grease Musical and I want to audition for the role of Sandy…I’m not blonde tho!! 😢so like I’m scared that’s gonna sway audition results

I just found you and you're so freaking amazing omg where have you been my whole life
Wow...you are so nice. I know that sounds a bit weird but it's refreshing to see someone we enjoys Theatre, participates in it, and isn't mean about it. I know several people in Theatre that are rude, critical, and scary. I enjoy theatre a lot...but I fear to work with these people or if I will even grow in that sort of environment. I haven't been in Theatre for a long time, my singing ain't that good but I'd love to be in musicals, but more over I feel that I've receeded* so far from it that I'm just not that good. So, I'm happy I found your channel. You give me confidence and make me hopeful for the future because of your personality and helpful information. Thank you!❤
+Isabelle Roaming isabelle!!! Oh my GOODNESS!!!! 🦄💖😱🌟 thank you so, so much. Does anyone have recommendations for someone who doesn't visually fit most roles? I'm mixed race (half Indian, half Ashkenazi Jewish), and so I can't really play white roles, or block roles, and can only occasionally pass as Hispanic, which makes it tough to look at all like a casting panel's view of a character. My typecast is strong women who are generally single and have some kind of emotional trauma. Unfortunately I am very small of stature, but cannot for the life of me convincingly play an ingenue.
hi I know this is late but honestly, roles generally don't have a set race unless specified within the context of the show (ie. Ragtime, Hairspray etc) most of the time you'll just be casted in whatever role fits you the best talent wise. I'm sure you could pull off any role you wanted! if ingenues aren't really your thing, you'd probably make an amazing character role actor.
Tysm for this video 😃❤️
This was so useful, thanks!
