We're talking about the worst musical theatre / broadway audition songs! I love doing videos on audition advice because auditioning (for a musical, play, movie, tv show, whatever) is the absolute worst! It can be such an insanely stressful process, so I love making it a little less awful. Today, I'm sharing musical theatre songs you really shouldn't be taking into the audition room. Like I mention in the video, these are just general guidelines that I feel would apply to the vast majority of singers watching but hey-- you do you!

Really I felt that! I like to think I can sing, so I do anyway, but nobody appreciates it. LOL
My high school choir teacher had this great story about a musical audition he did. He had to pick a Disney song to sing on the spot and picked "A Whole New World" from Aladdin. He forgot that the song was a duet so when the music got to Jasmine's section he panicked and ended up singing Jasmine's portion in falsetto much to the amusement of the director. The best part is that he actually got the role!

I was in a production of Annie and the director explicitly said to the girls auditioning "Please do not sing 'Tomorrow'. Sure enough a late comer comes in (red curley hair and red dress) sang Tomorrow. Her mom had a fit when the girl didn't get the lead.

I took a master class with an actor and casting director about a year ago and they actually said they'd much rather hear a more well known song so that they can focus on the actual singing instead of also having to pick apart the lyrics. So if you're comfortable singing a song and its good just go for it don't worry that its "too popular"
Exactly. I recently did an audition spontaneously after years of not being in musical theatre and sang Think of Me, they didn't mind at all and they liked my audition. Got the part 😊

@@poppymiller9846 yeah, no, I was saying the song was talking about his/her Dead Mom, so if JD's mom was singing it, it wouldn't make sense if you know what I mean?
As a pianist involved in several community theater and school theater programs, I agree with most of what you've said. Especially, don't bring in something with a ridiculous piano part! I've stumbled my way through several auditions with Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown pieces. Even if you can sing them perfectly with your rehearsal track, they probably won't go well in an audition. I'll also add couple more points. Make sure that the copy of music you hand the accompanist is complete, (i.e. the bottom line isn't cut off because the copier can't handle oversized scores), clean and clear (no excessive markings ore smudges or a copy of a copy of a copy that you can still recognize some of the notes in) and has no awkward page turns (i.e. you're going to sing 8 bars from page 27 and jump to page 32 to sing the next 16 bars then repeat back to page 28 for the refrain). Also, make sure your score is in the key your going to sing in. Sometimes, pianists can transpose, but we shouldn't have to. I love the idea of finding a simplified accompaniment for some pieces.

Peter Schipper One guy at my Man of La Mancha audition a few years ago (where I sang Fiji Water by Owl City????) sang Happy Birthday because he didn’t want to get in, but his mom forced him to go. He got Sancho.

My friend sang Happy birthday in middle school for a musical audition but she added onto it so it could reach whatever time minimum was set up, and she got the female lead.

I auditioned with "Silent Night" for "Bye Bye Birdie"...albeit I was like 9, it was days before Christmas, and I was auditioning for my first musical with NO idea you had to prepare a song until 2 minutes prior to being shoved on stage, shaking and nervous with the new knowledge that I was completely unprepared. Good times.

9 NightWolf no idea, it was a while ago and I was probably watching specific voice coaches or singers and youtube might’ve recommend it to me because the typical viewers of whoever I was watching also tends to watch this channel. That would be my guess.

As a director, I hate these types of lists; they're more overdone than the songs they say are overdone and always make broad generalizations. A fellow director put it best, don't assume to know what I want or don't want - ask. Some directors may not want to hear certain songs, others don't care. One director may want to hear any song, so long as it's not from the show you're auditioning for; another director, like myself, may prefer you sing a song from the show, to get a better idea if or how you might fit into that production. Make no assumptions. Ask.
The only given going into an audition is that, whatever you sing, it should showcase the strengths of your voice; and invariably be appropriate for the tone of the show you're trying out for. That's it. Anything else is just one person's opinion. Even if 100 other people share that opinion, it doesn't matter much if you're auditioning for 101st person who has a different perspective.

I was auditioning for Mean Girls (Regina) and I used Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish (We could use any genre song)…. Yeah not the best decision. I was ensemble.

Why beat yourself down. I auditioned for a musical for the first time this year even though i knew that i wouldn't get a role. I did it for the auditioning experience.
@@tanatya6352 I feel like it's a little bit different when you weren't that eager to audition in the first place but your friend, who ran the auditions, eventually convinced you and then you find out they knew you probably weren't going to make the audition in the first place, so you auditioned against your will for no reason and never want to do it again
@@hellogoditsmesara3569 I guess i just have a different perspective on auditioning because i have done it only a couple of time. I suppose that if you are more of a professional you will do it only if you believe you can make it.
@@tanatya6352 I would be far from saying I'm a professional, but usually I'm behind the curtain so being on stage isn't my cup of tea. I'd rather not be encouraged to audition when I've 1. already expressed interest in stage managing instead, and 2. not have a chance of making the role anyway and have it reasserted in my mind that I had the right idea that I don't have any business being on stage.

We were doing Beauty and the Beast JR in middle school and I auditioned with Human Again bc I was told it's good to use a song that most people wouldn't pick and also the director wanted to hear us sing songs from the musical. The catch was that we would only get to sing a small portion of the song and I didn't realise until she stopped me 2 lines in how small a portion it would be. If anyone is familiar with how that song goes you'll know that the first two lines are just Lumier talking. She didn't even hear me sing.

I used “World Burn” to audition for Legally Blonde when I was 12😅. It didn’t seem like a bad idea at first because I have a wide range, but I couldn’t riff at the time. It sounded like crap. To the directors/whoever had to listen to me audition, I am so sorry

Majorrrr respect to the pianists for musicals honestly. They’re insane.
Piano music is on another level in musical theater. I played in a couple and it's insane. You pretty much never stop playing and if you mess up you can screw the entire pit.
