@@NitpickingNerds and also, when you copy cards with Mizzix’s Mastery and such effects - you don’t get magecraft triggers for copying, just for cast. Species Specialist 👌 I love that card. It’s great in my Athreos, God of Passage deck. Pick zombie, then bounce my zombie ETB cards back and forth from my hand/graveyard for tons of value.
Just some food for thought: chord of calling doesn’t necessarily work well with stuff like craterhoof because it requires you to tap a lot of creatures down. So you might not be able to get your big swing in.
Pretty much a wincon, yeap, Araumi can do absurd shit so easily, my playgroup fears her so much lmao. Off the top of my head, great cards for her that I put into the deck are: enigma thief(return 3 permanent to each opponent's hand), altar of dementia, syr konrad, treasure cruise, panharmonicon, consuming aberration, mystical reflection, myr battlesphere, agent of treachery, pityless plunderer, peregrine drake, true-eyed navigator, any creature that entombs on etb! Have fun winning!
The third and second to last card being from mizzix's precon really lets us know how underrated that deck and the rares in it were compared to meren and ezuri
1 correction: Mizzix's Mastery doesn't let you double dip on magecraft. Magecraft procs on casting or copying "spells", while MM copies exiled "cards" and them lets you cast those copies. You get the casting proc but not the copy proc.

Re: Deadly Rollick and the whole free spell cycle from Ikoria Commander, VERY briefly during Amazon Prime Day a couple weeks ago, they had a bundle of all 5 Ikoria decks for $70. SEVENTY US DOLLARS! Fierce Guardianship and Deflecting Swat alone are worth just about that much! That's completely insane! Tragically, the product listing was halfway down the page while I was looking for other stuff, and by the time I saw that crazy deal and tried buying all I could at instant speed, Amazon had already bumped the price back up into the normal range. My disappointment in that moment was immeasurable. I still got some deals, but that would've been amazing!
Basically the rule is, if Living Death is in a deck, it’s the best card in that deck. Not bad for the price. But that brings me to another card that is very worth the 3.50 or whatever it is now, Soul-Guide Lantern. I’ve started making room for this in most of my decks and the ceiling is so high and the floor is also pretty high. Getting the free exile on ETB is so big, often getting rid of the one problematic thing is enough, then you just cycle it for a card.
Where are you guys getting these prices? Agent of Treachery cost me $8 and field (which I want for my yarok deck) always shows up as about $20. Is there somewhere I can get them cheaper than card kingdom?
I frequently shop from both. CK has higher prices usually (not astronomically high) but sometimes you can find the cards for cheaper on CK. I think they mark up their prices for convenience purposes. When you order from CK it's one store so it's all there. Shopping from TCG player is fine and prices are good, however sometimes you have to wait longer for shipping if everything wasn't ordered through direct. In short CK quicker shipping slightly higher prices. TCG player might have you waiting for your cards longer for cheaper.
The creature that gets around Toxic Deluge: Norin the Wary 🙃 The Beast Whisperer “reprint” you guys are referring to is the “Walmart” promo that comes with those big box repacks.
I missed out on treachery at 99 cents. My friend spent a ton of money on that card and been selling them for 3 to 5$ and still has many copies. I just did not see it and normally I can pick out good cards but at 7 mana at most anyone would want is one copy for niche decks but that card shows up in so many decks who knew?
Mystic confluence DOES have 27 combos. since you can pick the same option more than once and you are picking three times, three options * three options * three options 3x3x3=27
pretty sure the rules say anytime your commander changes zones you can choose to place it into the command zone. so, you can't really... reanimate someone elses commander... you can only force it out of the graveyard back into the command zone.
Btw: Mizzix's mastery doesn't trigger magecraft twice. Magecraft: When you cast or copy a *spell* MIzzix's mastery: Copy each instant/sorcery *card* in your GY, then you may *cast the copy* without paying its mana cost. So you get one trigger per card, for casting, but you never copied any spells.
Beast whisperer was printed as a resale promo and that flooded the market bringing the price to where it is, I remember it being around 10$ before the pandemic Also the reason why there are straight copies and copy and casts is because of where it is being copied from; if you are copying something on the stack, that is where the copy appears and you don't need to cast it, but if you are copying it from a different zone you would still have to cast the copy to have it do anything
Toxic deluge is 2 and black for sorcery, fire covenant is 1 red black for instant for same effect. 2 color pips for instant speed gotta be at least as good in a vacuum and looks like its about 1/4 the price currently
Species Specialist is probably better AGAINST tribal decks than anything. I combo it with debuffs like Illness in the Ranks to draw massive amounts of cards, as some token decks like to have cards that create tokens with little effort, such as at upkeep or on Landfall. I think Goblins and Plants are my favorites. Avenger of Zendikar just reads "opponent draws X cards, where X is the amount of lands you control."
Living death is insane. I've been playing it in every black deck (and I have always primarily played monoblack in edh since c14). Even without a sac outlet (but a sac outlet usually makes you win depending on the creatures you have, and ESPECIALLY if you have gray merchant).
I just cut Felidar Retreat from my Rin and Seri card pile on Moxfield lol, guess I need to rethink that. BTW Nitpicking Nerds, could I pay you two to look at my card pile on Moxfield and make your own cuts so I could compare your cuts to my cuts?
I run both counterbalance and bolas citadel along side sensei's top in my oloro control deck and 9 out of 10 times im tutoring for citadel above counter-top. 1 life draw a card sorcery speed repeat as many times as you want. A build your own Griselbrand. That combo is pure value
I think Garruk cursed huntsman is a great £5 planes walker, it comes down at 5, it's +0 gives you 2 blockers which increase its loyalty then next turn you can ultimate to give yourself an emblem for +3/+3 trample for all your creatures that can't be removed. Falling that it can -3 to kill a creature and draw a card which isn't bad either
Currently making a five color commander deck, the check lands are gonna all be in the deck because I don’t want to make such a high budget for the lands. Play testing shows that almost every time they’ll enter untapped, even with only one copy of each basic land (tainted pact is a win con for the deck). I’m glad seeing them on the list because they’re definitely work their buck. Same goes for the zendikar battle lands cause they also name basic lands 👌
I believe the command zone ruling states anytime the commander would change zones you may put it in the command zone so being on the battle field to battlefield no problem but if they reanimated your commander I do believe you can put it in the command zone
Yup. It’s a solid one card combo with her. Make your build overwhelmingly creatures and mill out. Cephalid Illusionist + Lightning Greaves + Sidisi mills out too.
I’ve actually begun running more land destruction recently. Field of the dead is an amazing piece, but makes a very obvious case for why land destruction (targeted, not mass) is unduly taboo. I just ordered several obsidian charmaws because I’m tired of games where having counters to major combo pieces is forbidden…
Mystic confluence has 10 combinations 1. AAA 2. BBB 3. CCC 4. ABC 5. AAB 6.AAC 7.ABB 8.ACC 9.BBC 10.CCB where A, B, and C represent the three different modes.
I am a big fan of staff of nin, idol of oblivion, underworld dreams, and I strongly recommend giving widespread panic a spin in mono red decks. Also Jeska's will and storm-kiln artist are amazing
The reason there is the difference between casting the copy and choosing new targets for the copy has to do with what you are copying. With Mizzix's Mastery you are copying cards and so for them to enter the stack as spells they must be cast whereas with teach by example you are copying a spell already on the stack so it cannot be cast. The distinction is between spell and card.
But have you ever cast Living Death from the top of your library using Bolas's Citadel, bringing back your Agent of Treachery to steal your opponents Field of the Dead?!
Don't forget with Species Specialist it counts tokens. there are really not a lot of death draw triggers that work with tokens, Dark Prophecy, Lili Dreadhorde general are the only ones with no conditions
I won with Felidar retreat paired with Emeria Shepard, while having sakura tribe elder in my graveyard i was just able to keep pulling him back and pulled out about 10 lands
I think Species specialist is a good card but for zombie tribal as you guys mentioned, Undead Augur, Midnight Reaper, and Graveborn Muse are better options as they are zombies themselves. But for sure, other tribes without draw support love it, I have it in my B/R Goblin tribal.
I actually took Agent of Treachery out of my Scarab God Steal/Clone Tribal deck, because everyone hated that card so much haha. What an absolutely degenerate card
One game I used chord of calling to get a frilled mystic, and the player had a counter spell but couldn’t use it because he needed a stifle to counter the ability.
Casting copies vs just copying: when a spell is on the stack, the copy is created on the stack. When you copy a spell card in a different zone, the game cannot create the copy on the stack. In order to get the copy on the stack, it needs to be cast.
Love this 🙌 went to look for species specialist the other day at LCS but no luck :( … from commander deck specific right? Gotta start buying online 🤦♂️
Agent of Treachery goes into my: Marchesa, the Black Rose, Muldrotha, Yarok, and Aminatou decks. And every time I cast it I become archenemy. But then I yoink their Cradle or something and it's always worth it.
Can I recommend Sire of stagnation? Great hate piece, draws you tons of cards and even exiles the cards so you don’t help graveyard decks! What are they gonna do, not play lands?
25:53 I'm curious as to how "bad" terminate would be considered if you simply changed destroy to exile. I think 2 mana at instant speed spot removal anything is perfectly fine. I would easily include it in any of the 10-12 spot removals I run in a rakdos/mardu or jund
I plan on building a trelassara deck and adding felidar retreat and a beast whisperer. Any other suggestions? Love the channel. I love that you keep it budget centered.
Question for Cathar's Crusade- if I have a token generating sorcery that lets me put out say, 4 goblins, does it trigger once for each goblin? Or just once for the entire spell? Thanks

I am a big fan of staff of nin, idol of oblivion, underworld dreams, and I strongly recommend giving widespread panic a spin in mono red decks. Also Jeska's will and storm-kiln artist are amazing
The craziest thing about Species Specialist is that it doesn't say nontoken! It's bonkers in my Lathril deck
Wish I'd bought up a bunch of field of the dead when it was 79 cents.
Was it ever that low??
@@NitpickingNerds
For the first month it was under 2 dollars with a low of about 70 cents.
The distinction is between spell and card.
noooo bala ged is a second copy of regrowth not a replacement 😭😭😭
The only time you cast copies of spells is when the card is exiling cards from graveyards then copying them so that actually makes sense
But have you ever cast Living Death from the top of your library using Bolas's Citadel, bringing back your Agent of Treachery to steal your opponents Field of the Dead?!
GOOD GRAVY
You will need a shovel for all that salt.
Love the video. Realized I had cards to get still. Cord of calling for Yaron, and cathars crusade for alela, artful provocateur
Species Specialist can make sense targeting clerics if you just imagine he’s a serial killer. Gotta make your own flavor sometimes ^_^
41:16 CLIFFTOP RETEET
Another good video you guys, I appreciate the content
Thank you we appreciate you
Don't forget with Species Specialist it counts tokens. there are really not a lot of death draw triggers that work with tokens, Dark Prophecy, Lili Dreadhorde general are the only ones with no conditions
Right, getting cards back for your zombie tokens is a pretty big game
You’re welcome! Appreciate the s/o :) love all of the content, I’m here for it all.
Those spells that cast for nothing when your commander is out work really well for Oathbreaker format too.
I actually took Agent of Treachery out of my Scarab God Steal/Clone Tribal deck, because everyone hated that card so much haha. What an absolutely degenerate card
It's really messed up 😂
In my Roon flicker deck it gets pretty degenerate as well.
One game I used chord of calling to get a frilled mystic, and the player had a counter spell but couldn’t use it because he needed a stifle to counter the ability.
Or counter the chord but they got got
You know what synergizes really well with Cathar's Crusade?
Grave Titan
Joe’s thoughts on Damnation:
“Amazingly Fine”
Sometimes he worries me
I love Teferi in muldrotha deck because of the dredge cards I basically get to mill a bunch of cards on each of my oppents turns
Syr Konrad + Living Death is a masterpiece
Copies can't be countered
Hey friends, how do you feel about Scout's Warning. ??
It's an auto include in any of decks running white and creatures. Especially mono white ;)
Beast whisper is also reprinted in the black green elf commander precon
Beast Whisperer is a solid card that, like bonecrusher giant, has been heavily reprinted. Scoop'em.up when possible.
Heck yeah!
Good luck!
As far as I can count, Mystic Confluence has 10 total options:
1. Counter, Counter, Counter
2. Counter, Counter, Return
3. Counter, Counter, Draw
4. Counter, Return, Return
5. Counter, Return, Draw
6. Counter, Draw, Draw
7. Return, Return, Return
8. Return, Return, Draw
9. Return, Draw, Draw
10. Draw, Draw, Draw
Kinda feels like you're getting away with something either way, definitely a fair 7-drop
@@NitpickingNerds may I note that it is a 6 drop, it’s also a 5/7 making it a great defensive blocker
25:53 I'm curious as to how "bad" terminate would be considered if you simply changed destroy to exile. I think 2 mana at instant speed spot removal anything is perfectly fine. I would easily include it in any of the 10-12 spot removals I run in a rakdos/mardu or jund
Goblin welder seems amazing in prosper tome bound. Cheat out bolas, or cloudkeep and sac outlet.
Thanks
+1/+1 counter trigger for each goblin. So each will get 4 +1/+1 counters.
The number of combinations for Mystic Confluence is an n choose k with repetition problem. With 3 options and 3 choices that gives us 10 possible combinations:
Counter Counter Counter
Counter Counter Bounce
Counter Counter Draw
Counter Bounce Bounce
Counter Bounce Draw
Counter Draw Draw
Bounce Bounce Bounce
Bounce Bounce Draw
Bounce Draw Draw
Draw Draw Draw
22:59 You say that like it's a bad thing!
But of course not! :P
"I wouldn't exactly call Cyclonic Rift a board wipe."
I've been watching your channel for a bit now and I've never felt so attacked lol. Rift. Teferi. MoT go brrrrrr.
I thought your commander can go in to the command zone if it changing it board state, I'm referring to the graveyard to an opponent battlefield.
Only if it going to a spot that isn’t the battlefield
Species Specialist works with tokens too. Makes it sooo much better than Grim Haruspex in tribal decks.
My rule on buying cards. If I buy one I buy 2. If I want a playset I buy 2 playsets. If it card I am going to flip after a reprint I won't tell you how many I will buy but it usually so many that when the price doubles I make enough to feed my cardboard addiction.
"Cherries, what are we doing?" --Beezy doing a good job at sounding like a buddy cop movie
i find that the Felidar retreat works great with evolving worlds ( you get 2 triggers per turn )
Imagine Cathars’ Crusaide and scute swarm
