We know Commander precons are very powerful these days, but how well do they actually line up against precons from Magic's past?
In this epic episode of Extra Turns, we’re putting precons from across time against each other to find out! Content creator Brian David Gilbert (Dropout TV) and screenwriter/culture writer Karen Han (The New York Times, Slate) join JLK and Rachel to face off with four powerful decks from different eras pulled straight out of the box. Bello is such a kill on sight commander. Ive seen that precon win against 500 euro+ decks because Bello was on board for 2-3 rounds in a row.

If we're going to be bringing in people from Dropout, can we try to bring in Brennan Lee Mulligan? I know he used to play at some point and I feel like he would really bring a lot to the table
Damn, what a throwback. Merciless Rage was my very first Commander Deck
Oh my goodness, same! I remember picking it up at a Comicon with one of my friends back in the day who got the 2018 Subjective Reality precon with the OG Aminatou. They were about 6/7 of us who went and one of the things I remember fondly was playing it against him 1v1 in a restaurant to test the decks out using the menus as playmats. This episode was a huge walk through memory lane for me.
Finally!!! I'm so happy to see Anje at Command Zone, she was my first commander and i like madness mechanic so much!
I'm surprised that Brian and Karen didn't play precon commanders like Zinnia or Breena, since They Like Watching Birds. :D
So weird getting into Magic and seeing people all these internet famous people I knew before show up on these shows
I really enjoyed the older precons being like 25% to 30% of the face card and then it kind of having two other decks at about 20% and there if you wanted to fine-tune three out of one

I'm leaving this comment just as the commanders were revealed and I wanted to say that I got the Bello precon and it was STRONG out of the box. Definitely interested to see how it compares to the other three decks in this game
As soon as they showed Bello I knew the other decks had no chance against it 😅

My heart goes out to Brian. I saw the deck introductions and knew right away that his wouldn't go as hard as the other three. I love Anje, I love the color identity but that deck was just not a great precon or a good matchup for the pod.

My most recent deck I m currently playing Creative Energy Precon from MH3 and it's insane, winning a lot of games against other fully constructed and upgraded precons. And I have 10 built decks.

54:02 Was the Garruk's Uprising supposed to be animated? I dont think it makes any difference, but Bello says that each arctifact and non-Aura enchantment with cmc 4 or greater is animated.

no i believe every deck plaid very well despite the difference in power. this confirms my thoughts about bello commander deck tho so if i was willing to invest money into a precon without big upgrades, i'd definitely go that way one day.
I disagree that they played well, actually. Lots of mistakes in my opinion, outright giving Karen the game (although her deck was also just plain stronger):
1- Josh enchanted Bello with the +3/+3 aura for no real reason. It doesn't even protect Josh, since the danger from Bello isn't his body, but in his ability to turn everything else into card drawing beatsticks. All it does is make Bello imprevious to being removed by a single Breya activation, which is a major problem for the entire table.
2- Rachel not using Breya to kill Bello in response to the aforementioned enchantment being cast, but instead waiting for next turn to use Breya to kill the hamster which was only a problem because it had haste (from Bello, who could have been dead). Instead of forcing Karen to spend basically the entire turn recasting Bello, or casting something else, in which case her enchantments wouldn't be animated or have haste, she let Bello stay on the board, removed the hamster and still let Karen get value (card draws) out of the remaining animated enchantments.
3- The absolute worst one IMO, Rachel dealing three damage to Karen with her Breya as Josh is moving to blow up her mana generator, instead of removing literally anything on her board instead, but especially that Tendershoot Dryad, which ends up causing Karen's upcoming attack to deal a lot more damage than it otherwise would have, and generating more plant tokens until BDG finally takes care of it.
4- Brian killing Rachel's dragon instead of making a deal with her to let it live in exchange for Rachel killing Karen while leaving his stuff alone. From the moment he crippled Rachel's ability to kill Karen, he pretty much sealed the deal on that game. The ability to remove two creatures in a turn is a powerful bargaining chip, and it would have been nice to see him actually try to play for some kind of win, as unlikely as it was. Him and Josh might have been able to team up against Rachel after, since she didn't have as much of a sure value engine at that point.
I had other issues too but these just felt very obvious...

I know a lot of people hate the Precon meta, but I feel it's the best format. Older decks are usually weaker than newer ones, but this format are far more balanced. It's quite annoying how you all complain about the format, that's because you have access to any cards you want, most of us can't do this, or do not want to spend $1000 on a magic deck. You should be far more optimistic about the format and keep the snide remarks to yourselves.

the 4 colour commanders are all pretty good, but I think Breya is the best one. Yidris is ok. Saskia is arch enemy commander as you can take out 2 players at once. I really like Aragorn the Uniter. the last one iis atraxa and she's good too.

Remember everyone all precon are in bracket 1. The bracket system needs to consider all the cards power creep is real.

Oops the Rolling Hampshere at 40:25 wasn't an eligible target as it wasn't crewed yet (i.e. not a creature). Non-creature permanents have no power or toughness (r 208.3)

Brian killing that firebreathing dragon @48:18 was not smart. Coulda made a deal to have Rachel attack Karen. It was no threat to him for at least 2 more turn cycles.
That dragon was the only way to make sure Karen didn't win and he destroyed it. Feels like there was a off screen reason for that, there is no way Rachel would have attacked him with the dragon.

how awesome would it have been in response to unnatural trigger just minus 4 twice to kill the bello. while Karen is in combat.
Just minus 4 once as Josh moves to equip the aura, instead of watching it happen and then killing the hamster that's only a threat because of the Bello giving it haste...

Appropriate that BDG plays the Madness deck given how his skits seem to intentionally make you question your sanity.
I do wish Rachel had used the Akiri / Silas partner pair though; I ran out and bought that precon SPECIFICALLY so I could play that pairing.

I had the Anje precon as one of my first precons and I did not enjoy the playstyle of it haha, Ghired Conclave Exile precon was much more fun.
