- PART I:
Welcome to my in-depth review of the Leica D Lux 8! In this video, I'll share my experiences shooting over 2000 images with the Leica D Lux 8, and you'll see plenty of sample images and videos, including stunning 4K footage at 24-30p. I'll also provide a detailed comparison of the Leica D Lux 8 against the Fuji X100VI and Ricoh GRIII.
The Leica D Lux 8, while similar in hardware to the Leica D Lux 7, boasts significant improvements. Notably, the D Lux 8 now shoots RAW DNG files, offering greater flexibility in post-processing compared to the JPEG-only D Lux 7. I found the autofocus to be responsive, even though I tested a prototype firmware. By the time the D Lux 8 is released, its performance should be even more reliable.
The D Lux 8's design takes cues from the Leica Q3, making it look like a mini Q3 when the lens is retracted. It retains the same versatile 24-75mm f1.7 to f2.8 lens, delivering excellent performance in a compact, fast package.
A standout feature of the Leica D Lux 8 is its Micro Four Thirds sensor, which provides impressive dynamic range, potentially surpassing cameras with larger sensors. The camera's handling is comfortable, even without a grip, and its performance is highly responsive, producing great image quality. While it may not compete with the superior sensors and optics of the Leica Q3 or M11, the D Lux 8 serves as an excellent secondary camera, especially for those who prefer carrying a body with a prime lens.
Though the D Lux 8 can shoot video, I wouldn't consider it the best option for vlogging or hybrid shooting. It excels as a pocketable photography camera. Priced around $1600, it's a great entry point into the Leica ecosystem.
After extensive shooting, I'm pleased with the results and the control offered in post-processing. In this video, I'll discuss whether the Leica D Lux 8 is worth the investment and who it’s best suited for.
Make sure to watch both parts of this comprehensive review. If you find value in this video, please like and subscribe for more content like this. Enjoy!

Which is your favorite pocketable camera carry?
I put all cameras such as the LX100, D-Lux, X30, X100 into more of a portable class as all of their lenses - even when retracted - stick out too much to fit in a pocket. So my top choice then is the Fujifilm X-E3 or X-E4. The X-E3 has the front mode dial and bit more buttons while the X-E4 sports a tilt-screen. Either can be configured with a small lens and not take up much more bulk/weight than the D-Lux while also providing a bit more to hold on to as well as flexibility and APS-C. Based on what I know of the LX100, D-Lux 8 would be still be a contender.
@@malfunkt Agreed
Fuji X30, Fuji X70, Ricoh GR
I was getting really bored with all the other initial negative reviews of this camera, but wow, really nice to see yours here, in particular seeing many of the other reviews of the D-Lux 8 show quite soft images, and yours are tack sharp. My current favourite pocket camera is my Ricoh GRD IV. I just love this camera, even though I will admit and being 12 years old, with a CCD sensor the poor thing is getting very 'lo-fi' by today's APS-C standards, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the DNG files it creates are really excellent. I briefly owned a Ricoh GR II which was an amazing camera and that would've been a keeper if it hadn't have developed the dreaded stuck shutter and lens problem. Ricoh's quality control post their CCD models isn't great. I also owned the Ricoh GR III, but I really didn't like it much. I'm an old Leica M6 owner and I really wanted another Leica but without spending megabucks (I'd have to remortgage my house and probably sell my children to slavery in order to purchase an M11!). I've also tried the Olympus E-P7, which is also a fantastic 20mp m43 camera, around the same size of the D-Lux 8 and with interchangeable lenses (so will fit the amazing Leica 15mm f1.7, a lens I already have, use and love) but it doesn't have a viewfinder, and of course isn't a Leica!
I found that the optical image stabilization on while walking produces bad results. And i stated that in a call out in the video. Turning off the OIS and cranking the shutter speed is the best way to get sharp images. But again I think this will be solved in the new firmware. or I hope. Reviewing a camera with a prototype firmare is a tricky review that's why I am saving my final conclusions when I can test the real deal. As you've seen I did not recommend the camera and advise everyone checks it out for themselves. I can recommend other cameras with confidence but not this one yet.
Video quality on this video is 🔥
Natural light. Now and lights from a room lol. DJI mic
The pictures look great! Love the colors, are they very edited or it has good colors straight out? Thanks
Slightly corrected white balance highlights and shadows. Some of them do have a bit of grading.
Good review!
Glad you enjoyed it
The widest fov is with the lens fully extended? Or with when its compact? Thanks.
Wide contracted
so what is exactly the difference to DLUX7 let along the decreased maximum shutter speed?
Better screen and EVF and new design. But that’s not enough IMO to upgrade. Since I don’t own any of them (I used to own the DLux 7 but sold )I will go with the D Lux 8
what ya think are we phase or contrast detect?
Contrast only
do they so.ve the problim in dust leak in lens and you can tclean
I think this camera is better protected against the elements but I couldn't find info if its weather sealed
After many years sony rx100 iii left me. If we are honest this little sony is still good, I took so many beautiful photos with it and captured many memories. I have other cameras , big, expensive ones. But I want a small camera that will be in my pocket. I think the time has come for my first Leica.
It’s a great camera. Not the best or the most complete but it does what it supposed to do.
The Sony is significantly smaller - but the Leica allows for better control over your exposure triangle. I have both and an M. If I need a true pocket camera - it is the Sony.
Agreed
Can one of the two buttons on the back be configured to be a back-focus button? And if so, will it hold its focus distance until you focus with it again to get a new distance?
I'm not sure , Ididn't test that and I've already returned the camera.
Hiw much $? I may hav missed this, but where are the links to purchase the d 8?
Didn't u

I had that camera. But if I get it again I will. That was my favorite combo
It is recommended that next time the parameters of the photos used in the video be marked next to the photos. Sitll a great video
Noted
Hello, Great info. will the handgrip for the leica d lux 7 fit the leica d lux 8.Thanks
No idea. It’s a different shape. Maybe not.
Is that photo really captured by d-lux 8? The angle of view is felt like full-frame body.
All images in this video are from the DLux 8. If you are talking about the bokeh, that’s what you get when you are really close to subject at f1.7
My 7 screws on 43 filters. B&H says the 8 will not take any filters. Is that true?
I believe it does. It’s the same exact lens
Just posted a new video about it ruclips.net/video/836elY_Y_vM/видео.html
I’m watching it right now. I’m glad you get to the point and don’t blather on for 20 minutes. Thank you!
Hahaha. Glad you like the flow. It took mw some time to get to this point.
It is exactly the same lens, no difference so far,so it will fit
A lens cap is included, but sadly the auto-close cap is sold separately as an accessory.
Ouch
It’s certainly an expensive camera. I don’t understand all the hate against it having a previous gen sensor. If the sensor was good then, why can’t it be good enough now? It doesn’t really matter if other sensors are now “better” in terms of dynamic range or detail resolution. Some of my favourite pictures were taken with a D-Lux 2 which is far inferior to this camera. To me, it’s the haptics that matter. If these are good, then it’s a valid option to consider for a travel/everyday camera.
Agreed
You don't understand? Should be pretty crystal clear. You're paying premium for something that's 6 years old, how can you not understand where the hate is coming from lol. Come on dude. In terms of tech, 6 years old is ancient. Yeah give me an electronic device with the internals that are 6 years old, comments like this are the reason companies can get away with releasing "new" products with negligible amount of upgrades, they win, the consumers lose.
I don’t understand why people chase new tech just for the sake of it. The camera is way too expensive but not because of the tech it offers. It’s just too expensive! Same as Fuji X100 series - they’ve only now put in IBIS when it should’ve been in the V and arguably IV. Didn’t make them rubbish cameras. Did make them too expensive though.
Don’t forget companies need to charge whatever they need to charge to remain in business, it is up to the consumer to skip it or buy it. Simple as that.
@@GastonShuttersThat may be a convenient dismissal for a lesser brand but definitely not for Leica.
Does it have the Panasonic IBIS?
Im sure it has optical stabilization like the 7. Just wait for the LX100 III. Same camera for $500 less.
@@michaelbell75 In part 2 the creator says it was so bad he turned it off and raised shutter speed to go on without ibis. Too bad I was hoping for the best ibis in the business, from Panasonic. Like in the G9 mark 2.
@@Viewtolove you can’t fit IBIS in this compact camera with the larger sensor. You have to make sacrifices somewhere. Get one of their 1 inch sensor cameras like the ZS100 if you want IBIS. I really like the ZS series.
@@michaelbell75I have got a Fujifilm X 100 VI. With working IBIS. And compact. 8 years ago I had a Leica D Lux 7 in my hands and a too large Fujifilm XH-1, in those days one couldn’t. Times are changing my friend:-) Today it is possible to have good working IBIS in an compact body! Even in a full frame compact body: Panasonic LUMIX S9.
Yes it has OIS like I mention in the video no IBIS which is a missed opportunity
I wish Leica make a 18-50mm F2-4 version, and a RX-10 like m43 camera with 24-280mm F2-5.6
Write your wishes they check all these videos
@@GastonShutters thanks, hope they really do
fingers crossed
Really wish the lens did not pop out or if they had just done a fix prime lens. The pop out design just kills those cameras vibe for me.
I hear you. The purpose of this camera is range. But I agree. A 35mm equivalent would’ve been great.
@@GastonShutters Possibly. To me this is a Panasonic cash grab. Leica in my opinion would never do a camera like this 20+ years ago. To me this is a glorified Panasonic with a Leica logo. Still super cool, but I feel like Leica is known for their prime lenses and a fixed lens focal length would have make it like a mini Fuji x100v. IMHO.
No doubt that it’s the same core. But the improved features are a nice refreshment. And the fact that the res is 17MP more forgiving
FYI, your thumbnail for this video is titled Part II. You may want to change it to Part I.
Thank you for pointing my typo! Changed! Thanks again
Nothing about image quality? Low light performance?...
Check part two of this video where I have night photography samples. ruclips.net/video/Sxf4kxYYV-k/видео.html
It’s a topic not worth mentioning given that it’s the same as the old camera
Barely any improvements other than the looks. Not impressed, just an ok expensive point an shoot.
@@GastonShutters looks almost like an rx1 🤣. If only they could combine the evf from this new one with the sensor af and lens from that one
The RX1 RII is actually smaller and has a fixed lens
i dont know a lot about cameras but this camera basically seems like a Pansonic Lumix100M2 with a red logo on it. can someone please tell me other wise?
Better screen and EVF
Indeed
designed with Leica simpler physical interface controls and internal/smartfone software, DNG file support, USB-C vs Micro-USB, OLED viewfinder, higher resolution rear screen
@@Damon_Mah yep, but still 90% Panasonic. Might as well just wait until the LUMIX version comes out and save $500
Nothing wrong with the Panasonic. But if you can wait something tells me that you are ok with what you have now.
FYI the D-Lux 7 did have RAW DNG and it was very good at recovering details too
Yes. I know, I intended to say it didn't have DNG support. RWL is what it was called and larger files. I owned the DL 7 as well.
Leica wants to jump on the X100VI / Q3 Hype Train. In the Price Range 1800€. Many people who dont get a X100Vi ( or the Q3 to expensive) will get the 1800€ Leica. No matter what
The Q3 is a Leica.
@@GastonShutters i know. But its all about the price range of 1500-1800€. Many cant afford a Q3 so they choose a x100vi. X100vi isnt availible so they get a D-Lux8. A Mini Q3
The x100VI is a great camera as well.
weird , everyone seems like shoot this in WB. i guess this camera only good for WB
WB? White balance?

Congrats. Now finish watching it 😂
panasonic lx100 2 with a leica badge....and leica price
Great camera indeed with better screen, EVF, USBC 3, touch new menu and same great image quality.
Leica should reskin the Fuji x100vi and sell it for 9k 😂
Don’t give them ideas !
TILT SCREEN
That would’ve been a nice upgrade
no leica looks. then why anyone buy this camera lol thanks for this video
My guess is that it will be available upon release or in a later firmware.
@@GastonShutters i really hope so
🙏
Oh no, made in china 😢
All good. The phone or computer your are typing from is from there as well.
For 1500+ this camera is ass
There are more powerful options for the money indeed
Then wait for the Panasonic LX100 III. Same camera for $500 less
If you can wait then you may not been needing a camera that bad and the one you have is probably good enough for what you need it for
made in china nice work leica...
It’s a great camera. And it feels better built than the D Lux 7.
Nothing new. An old camera in new clothes.
Yes new design, EVF and slightly better screen same hardware
Thanks, but just like every other Leica LUX camera, it's not a real Leica. It's an overpriced Panasonic that is made in China. I'd wait for the Panasonic version that will be half the price.
Yeah it is not made in Germany and most likely there it will be the Panasonic version of it.
It's the Panasonic LX100 mark 2. Came out a few years ago.
@@jaybatongbacal9859 no, it’s not. It’s got considerable upgrades over the 100 II
Correct
I am under the impression that Panasonic has stopped making/marketing their version of this camera.
