The graphic novel has a MUCH darker tone than the film. Everyone is killed/aged to death without ever finding a way out or any explanation as to what is happening. Everyone dies but the baby grows to be a 50-year-old woman who spends the final pages building a sandcastle and grieving her parents
Shyamalan's bizarre style of dialogue needs to be studied. I can't decide if it more resembles aliens trying to mimic the flow of human conversation, or if he writes his characters to all collectively be having a stroke. EDIT: I'm obsessed with the comic panel at 1:16 that says "I HIT THE MENOPAUSE AFTER 14 HOURS"
Honestly I found it a little weird that James talks about how stilted and on the nose the dialogue is like this is new problem from Shyamalan that people haven't been noticing and mocking since Signs.
I think he's just straight up bad at directing people. It feels like he wanted to have each line read as if it were completely isolated, so he could just cut and edit around every single line. It makes the entire thing just sound absolutely absurd. No-one even comes close to talking over one another at any point in the film, even when they're angry or scared. They all still talk as if they had to wait to hold the talking stick.
@@6022 I agree. My sister saw this movie and commented on how bad the acting was and I had to tell her that it probably wasn't their fault because Shyamalan has this weird ability to make his actors embarrass themselves
I think it works great for characters like Mr. Glass, Kevin Wendle Crum, and the Grandparents in the visit. Those characters are mentally insane so when they say shyamalan's weird dialog it works because those characters are weird.
I think a better plot twist is that the island makes you really young, but you keep all your adult knowledge, and it turns out this island created boss baby.
That’s honestly a really fascinating concept for a horror movie. While they try to find an escape, the older people must watch as their children de-age until they’re literally fetuses that can’t survive outside of the womb. It ends with only the grandmother being alive, except now she’s 20 something.
On the other side of the world is a beach that makes you young, just you balance out the energy sapped from the beach that makes you old. Good grief, whoever owned that island would be both king of the world and public enemy #1. The amount of money people last to just look young is absurd!
"So, I went to the beach that makes you old." "You went to the what?" "The beach that makes you old." "The beach that makes you old?" "Yeah man, the beach that makes you old."
“Excuse me?” “I got to tell you about this beach, it made me old” “You have to know that’s not possible” “Look at me man, I’m old as hell, and it’s cuz I went to the beach that made you old”
the biggest plothole here is that if the baby already died from starvation because so much time has already passed quickly, then shouldn't EVERYONE died already because they've technically haven't eaten in years?
So, the original book was about a beach that made you old, and was a metaphor for the impermanence of our own existence, and it was called 'Sandcastles'. There is perhaps no better way to demonstrate the level on which M Knight understands the story than him choosing the title 'Old'.

I know there's no real point nitpicking a film like this on 'that wouldn't happen'-s, but... how did the pharmaceutical company think their whole plan was supposed to work? We don't just trust pharma companies to work out on their own if something's safe and then wander up to the FDA like "Oh, yeah, this is definitely ok. You can approve this one." I want to see the scene where they're applying for approval and they try to say that they don't need to go through any of the regular stages of testing their drugs because they did illegal human testing on a sample size of one on a magic beach, and they know it works because they were watching through a telescope.
It might depend on which government they went through. If they can get their foot in one door, other countries might at least run their own trials on it without questioning the origins, maybe? I'm not knowledgeable in this area, but there usually seems to be some corporate workaround.
It’s not that the drugs are ready for approval, it’s that the company knows they will be approved. They don’t have to risk spending money on dead ends, or risk surprises like fen phen (the drug that gave ppl heart attacks). Everything that comes out of this is solid so they can just go through the normal procedure knowing they will be successful.
@@blardfip4540 Well, true, fen phen did injure many people, and even has some confirmed deaths. It was also prescribed 18 million times, so if you got 18 million people on the beach, their plan is flawless.
Afaik, FDA doesnt actually certify your drugs are effective, only that it's safe to consume. That's why quack medicines dependent solely on placebo gets FDA certification.
Thank you James for the new video to watch. I was hospitalized friday and kill count is exactly what I needed. Your videos are like comfort food entertainment when I need them.
I was 16 when this came out and it was the first movie I watched in theaters alone. This lovely elderly couple got tickets too. As we were about 15 minutes early and the only ones in the theater; I overheard the wife asking her husband if they should ask if I would like to sit with them and being generally worried about me being alone. Her husband assured her that I would be fine and they could keep an eye on me as I was two rows in front of them. It was so sweet!!!
I’m with James, I kinda love this twist. It’s very dark and very clever. I’ve never read the graphic novel, but honestly, I’d love to see this concept in a miniseries.
Time for the ultimate challenge: Take a shot every time James says "the beach that makes you old." You'll feel like your liver's aged 80 years by the end of it.
I don’t know, this has become something of a comfort film for me. It’s genuinely really easy to follow and entertaining even if I’m busy with something else lol
Gael Garcia Bernal is an underrated actor with a diverse acting style. I enjoyed him in "Amores Perros" and "Babel" and especially in Werewolf By Night which Dead Meat covered a few years back.

12:10: “Kara’s Baby 51 Mins In Died From…Lack of Attention?” They straight up say the baby died of starvation. A baby requiring nutrition every 3 hours in a place where a year passes in 30 minutes? Yeah, she starved that fast.
@@BM-wh5qk Yeah, but they did mention there was food. It's true that it's not properly shown that they were eating, but they did have food specifically for that reason. But an adult, and even a kid of 6 or whatever she was at the beginning, can handle going a few "days" without food while the brand-new baby would not. Especially since mother's milk would be all they would have she could consume and the daughter didn't have time to try nursing at that fast a pace of time passage.
This would a wonderful premise to do a one off drunk Disney type video. Do “drunk kill count”, James, Chelsea, zoran, and gressiel(totally spelled that wrong) as disembodied hands get drunk to a kill count video with repeated jokes

The moment he said the line, and I was already expecting Dr. Gordon. Clearly, James does not disappoint with the running gag.
Thank you James for the new video to watch. I was hospitalized friday and kill count is exactly what I needed. Your videos are like comfort food entertainment when I need them.
The comments are young, the movie is Old
HA!
this is a joke of all time
Ha! Top comment!!
My wine and cheese are well aged
Nice
I was 16 when this came out and it was the first movie I watched in theaters alone. This lovely elderly couple got tickets too. As we were about 15 minutes early and the only ones in the theater; I overheard the wife asking her husband if they should ask if I would like to sit with them and being generally worried about me being alone. Her husband assured her that I would be fine and they could keep an eye on me as I was two rows in front of them. It was so sweet!!!
Need those James A. Janitties
Honestly, Chrystals death is what made me remember this film when I saw that you’re covering it
I don't know why but the whole "Beach that makes you old" bit just makes me chuckle, every time.
I’m with James, I kinda love this twist. It’s very dark and very clever. I’ve never read the graphic novel, but honestly, I’d love to see this concept in a miniseries.
I love how James just has every type of clothes for every video
His channel is dying.
@@haiz768 how'd you figure that?
@@haiz768he literally gets 1M+ every video 😭
@@haiz768EWWW WAIT you have 100+ comments and they are all hate comments 😭 average skull merchant main
Ok kinda true
I was expecting James to look a little older each time the camera cut back to him but going full old man for the "to the numbers" bit was great too 😊
Ok is no one gonna talk about how good James looks shirtless??
It’s on Twitter lol! we all agree he’s looking fine here
14:22 "I SEE YOU UP THERE, A-Hole"
Damnit, James. Almost choked on my drink 😂
😂
I really hope this movie isn’t about a beach that makes you old.
I hate to be the one that tells you this…
Not A beach... THE beach.
you might wanna sit down for this…
liked the subtle nods to eliza scanlens (karas teenage actor) filmography - got sharp objects, little women and babyteeth
Time for the ultimate challenge: Take a shot every time James says "the beach that makes you old." You'll feel like your liver's aged 80 years by the end of it.
The shots that make you old
“Why does my…everything hurt now?” Mood dude lmao
I don’t know, this has become something of a comfort film for me. It’s genuinely really easy to follow and entertaining even if I’m busy with something else lol
Gael Garcia Bernal is an underrated actor with a diverse acting style. I enjoyed him in "Amores Perros" and "Babel" and especially in Werewolf By Night which Dead Meat covered a few years back.
_The Science of Sleep_ is a good one too
He gave the better performance of this film ....but everyone is so robotic one might not realize. Gael is (normally) a fantastic actor people!!
Chrystal's death was so traumatizing I loved it
"Don't look at me!"
real, the only good thing in the movie besides the concept
4:04 “TITLE CARRRRD, the beach that makes you TITLE CARRRRD” almost gave me an asthma attack and I don’t even know why.
>I went to the beach that makes you old.
-The beach that makes you old?
>Yea the beach that makes you old.

Hell yeah!!
welcome to the shot count, where we tally up the number of *(lemon soda shots)* that I can chug down everytime the word "the beach that makes you old" is said during the entirety of this kill count
Edit: for those that are wondering / worried though, don't worry: I didn't actually chug down lemon soda shots: I went for water instead during the watch-through of this kill count. But please, binge watch and drink responsibly - for the last thing you would want to worry about is getting a hangover after that watch-through... 😵💫
Godspeed
How you going so far?

"Welcome to Drunk Kill Count, where we drink watching Kill Counts and tell you what we learned from 'em. This week's Kill Count, released in 2024, is for M. Night Shyamalan's Old, featuring the beach that makes you old! Today's drinking game comes from @brandongamingtv7545, who says to drink every time James says 'the beach that makes you old.'"
Dude you’re going to get diabetes
James is 35?! Wow, that is impressive. At that age most RUclipsrs would retire by now but James is still uploading a shit ton! Thank you James!
Damn!! Looking good, James! It was real hard to look you in the eyes.
Mid-Sized Sedan had hemophilia not MS. That's why his wounds couldn't heal on the island and he died
Love kill count! It's such a like comfort show for me after all these years! :) Shoutout to James & Chelsea + Zoren & the team
22:33 The real horror of this movie
5:46 i love how the Lawrence Gordon joke is still going to this day
I don't know if you're even going to read this, but your channel got me into horror. To the point now, that I'm trying to go to a film college, to become a director of films, so that I can start making movies. I'm working on a short series right now, that I hope to someday post on RUclips. So thank you for being a big part of my life, and opening my eyes to my favorite genre of movies. It really means a lot to me. When I become a director, and release my first movie, I plan on having a special thanks to you and everyone that helps you with this channel. - Amon Brando, fellow horror lover.
12:10: “Kara’s Baby 51 Mins In Died From…Lack of Attention?”
They straight up say the baby died of starvation. A baby requiring nutrition every 3 hours in a place where a year passes in 30 minutes? Yeah, she starved that fast.
Wouldn’t the adults and kids have to eat every five minutes too?
@@BM-wh5qk Yeah, but they did mention there was food. It's true that it's not properly shown that they were eating, but they did have food specifically for that reason. But an adult, and even a kid of 6 or whatever she was at the beginning, can handle going a few "days" without food while the brand-new baby would not. Especially since mother's milk would be all they would have she could consume and the daughter didn't have time to try nursing at that fast a pace of time passage.
James talking about Death and violence in a friendly matter while reviewing movies is really damn entertaining to watch
This movie is criminally underrated. I loved it.
i mean it def one of his weakest movie we not talking about glass that one is horrible
We are now one step closer to a kill count on The Happening, and I am all for it.
James made it incredibly hard to watch this one respectfully 😭
FR THOUGH 😭
23:36 i guess you could say he went to the Beach that makes you Old- *proceeds to get shot*
Here’s a good drinking game: take a shot every time James says “the beach that makes you old”.
If you want death every time he says old
The drinks that make you old
There gonna be kill count of it
This would a wonderful premise to do a one off drunk Disney type video. Do “drunk kill count”, James, Chelsea, zoran, and gressiel(totally spelled that wrong) as disembodied hands get drunk to a kill count video with repeated jokes
It’s crazy that this movie is 3 years old I remember the trailers like it came out in the beginning of this year
They did. We got old.
What are y'all 15? lol 3 years is nothing
14:23 James has been funny AF in all these new Kill Counts 😂
16:29 “sharp objects be damned.” eliza scanlen’s kill count debut and we got an amma crellin reference, thank you writers!
Last night was one of the worst nights of my life. I woke up at 4:00 in the morning in a bad mood and I couldn’t get back to sleep. Thank you for uploading, James. It helped
Sending hugs your way. I hope you're doing better, but if not, just know that you are seen and we're all cheering you on! There's only so much you can do, but I hope that you find some relief from whatever is troubling you.
Who knew James was lowkey built with a sleeper build
I’m having an awful day, my grandmother is dying, I’m packing my bags to go see her at the moment, I go to RUclips to put on background noise and see the James.A.Janese has posted “Old” I have been looking forward to this movie for awhile. I just wanted to say thank you Dead Meat, for makeing this dark time better! 😊
I’m always taken off guard with just how in shape James is
