What’s the Dear John movie about?
John Tyree (Channing Tatum from Step Up and The Eagle), an American Special Forces soldier, takes advantage of a leave in the USA to see his father and go surfing. Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried from Solstice and Mamma Mia!) is a student and they meet by chance on the beach. It's love at first sight between them, and although they belong to two different worlds, an absolute passion brings them together for two weeks. But John has to leave again and, following the September 11 attacks, he is sent to Afghanistan. As for Savannah, she must return to the University. For several months, John and Savannah write heated letters to each other. Savannah, more and more worried about the safety of her beloved, questions herself. As desires and responsibilities become more and more opposed, the couple struggles to maintain their commitments. Then, at the worst possible moment, John receives a letter of rupture without any other explanation. He is destroyed and does not understand what is happening to him. When he returns to America for his father's funeral, he sees Savannah again. This one got married. The young girl has not given in to a whim or to her family's orders: if, in John's absence, she has chosen to marry Tim (Henry Thomas from E.T.), whom she has known since childhood, it is because he is suffering from cancer and someone has to take care of his son Alan, an endearing child who is also autistic. Even though the end credits come before the denouement, we understand that after Tim's death, John and Savannah will be able to love each other and raise Alan together, respecting the memory of his father.

I was in love once. The girl of my dreams and she loved me. We dated while I was in service and overseas, she was patient, kind and loving. She wrote me my dear john letter when she realized I wasn't ready to commit to her the way she was willing to for me. I broke her heart, and she moved on,(We stopped speaking and I didnt know) that after a time she met someone who didnt take her for granted. The day I got out of the service I called her (oblivious)to see if we could talk. That was when her grandmother told me she was a week away from marrying a wonderful man, with wonderful prospects that wanted to make a life with her. I lost her because I didnt deserve her. I wasn't willing to put her first and eventually she met someone who did deserve her, and 26years later he has certainly proved himself as loving husband and father. I'm happy for her and her family.
That how I learned that love is just an word without merit unless your willing to show it through actions.
Words alone are just wasted breathe.
I had something like this right about the time I joined, I didn't want to hurt her by being so far away. She said she would have stayed with me still, but I cut it off, it was dumb of me. She's with someone now and looks happy, that's all I ever wanted for her.

It was in my school's library and for some reason, it kept pulling me back even though romance really isn't my thing, let alone the amount of depressing bits in the book. But of course this is fiction, but a sad fiction & by the sounds of things a common thing in real life sadly... If you are in college and have to choose immediately between academics and a relationship, logically, the academics come first. Sometimes, we have to make certain priorities and set aside time in the future. Perhaps, they could have come together later. If they separated, they would never know. So, loyalty should be mutual.

a friend of mine knew a guy that came back home only to find it practically empty, with a letter and the ring in it. She had ran off with another guy. Man ended up sleeping in a sleeping bag on the bare floor of his empty house drinking himself to sleep, his buddies went there to get him out cause he was starving himself to death, this really stuck to me during my service as i had a girlfriend at that time, but I was lucky enough to live in an era with smartphones and the internet and whatnot. Couldnt imagine what it'd been with letters

I feel like a lot of people in the comments haven't actually seen the movie. This wasnt an easy decision as we find out later on she was not in love with tim and only married him because he was dying of cancer and his autistic son allen needed someone to look after. She sacrificed her relationship with john to raise a disabled child who had nobody. She always loved john.

These chick flicks are all cut from the same mold. Dear John, The Notebook, Sweet Home Alabama, etc etc. Always one girl, two guys, she's torn between the two...not knowing who to love yet somehow the screenplay makes her out to be the victim in this love triangle. One dude has money, the other is a working stiff....sometimes the working stiff has money but keeps it under wraps or some sort of special talent that sets him apart from the other. In the end the one that got his heart ripped out (most of the time it's the working stiff) and stomped on the floor wins her back after many cycles of embarrassingly repeated effort though often ridiculed by his peers for doing so and the target audience of said film is coddled if not enabled to believe that their knight in shining armor does indeed exist out there in the real world and they'll romantically travel off into the sunset together in each other's arms living happily ever after because true love does indeed conquer all. The heart wants what the heart wants...blah blah blah. In the mean (pun intended) yet real time the working stiff would've had a restraining order placed on him the first time he stood in the chicks driveway holding a boom box over his head playing "their song" trying to win her back while she chose the "other guy" and they proceed to live out their miserable lives spending his trust fund!!!
LoL, too funny but kind of an accurate review summarizing the plots of some of these movies probably including some Nicholas Sparks ones based on his books. (I think the screenplays are also written by him too?)
I haven't actually read any yet but I'm just gonna guess the movies are slightly different from the books to cater to the drama and romance of cinema and make it more like that, for artistic and other considerations than what they are as novels, cause not all of the stories actually had two guys, like being torn between two, & having to decide between them, (the two diff typical types, as you described... humorously but well put!)
But a couple were similar that way, the Notebook and the one with Teresa Palmer and the puppies with the vet and she met him while still with the doctor... I forgot the name of it but loved that one.
Actually that was kind of similar to another Channing Tatum movie with Rachel McAdams which wasnt by Nicholas Sparks but I thought it could have been. But based on a true story. And also title forgotten... brain is on vacation, or something but if you know movies & like those actors you'll know... except that one had no divided love interest, or did it? Oh I think it did!! She went back to her old life before meeting the husband... yes and back to school and met up with her former bf... same mother as in the notebook...
Well there was just an accident and amnesia with one where the other was she was in a coma but still, loyalty of a good man, that is my take on these, & most of them I've seen so far anyway... which yes you are right caters to the knight in shining armour syndrome for us hopeless romantics. I will emphasise the hopeless too cause its too hard to find in reality. Thats the appeal of the movies I guess, (requires or allows suspension of belief...)

I think maybe the man had some relatives or something he saw grandparents or parents some couple he knew in his life which inspired his themes, which is possibly why some follow a similar pattern - I'm guessing. Or else it follows a formula like some TV shows tend to, with what they think appeals and what people want. But in the end movies and reality are different. Sometimes reality can be good though, some people are lucky although I know I never will be one of them

I agree but the thing is it's not just Western women its most women around the world are like that. That's the kind of mentality women and men have these days they don't believe in the ideal of relationships or marriages the only care about sex they don't care about having a meaningful connection with somebody. When my very serious gf wrote me the 'dear John' letter she didn't even say she was sorry or anything... would have been nice to hear she felt some empathy. Although I wasnt a soldier on deployment or anything, but for sure a soldier for her...

Sadly, it was also a reality for the french troops in Afghanistan.
It's kind of ironic...lots of women are attracted to a man in uniform so us civilians worry about our chicks cheating with guys in the service. From what I can see military guys have a bigger problem with infidelity in their relationships. I would assume it's bc they're not physically there, and women act like it, too.
