When i came to US, i was surprised to see the Indians attitude here, very few are warm and fun to interact with, most of them really avoid any small talk/ exchange pleasantries , perhaps they see you as another competitor for Green card. Although they are educated and perhaps on good paying job but they are Extremely Insecure about life , yet on facebook they will show they are having the time of their life.
Wow very strange. I have been living in US since 2005 but never seen any H1B person. All of the people living in H1B used to share tips immigration… how to find deals, how to save money and still travel or have parties. And also used to help each other in finding the best labor to substitute as in those days labor substitution was a reality. We were and are even today the strongest of the friends as we have been through the immigration roller coaster together. Not sure how you guys have had this experience but if u do then it’s so sad and I really feel sorry for anyone behaving in that matter😢
That is not at all a fair comparison.Canada free health care is what americans are envy of. Pr of canada offers a much much better life than a visa holder in u.s overall.
Opportunities my foot, being always on the edge, frustrated with immigration system, swinging between hope and hopeless and being used as poker chip in political games; having no work life balance is no opportunity it's a emotional turmoil which is going to evaporate life out your life. Germany is much much better from the perspective of work life balance, job security, healthcare, environment, politics and friendly and straightforward non gimmicki immigration law are blessing.

There are 2 sides to every stories. What's the use of money and career opportunities over loosing your prime age living in uncertainty if your very existence depend on your next H1B extension /amendments . You can't be with your family when they need you most back at home due to some immigration process in progress /Travel Bans. Putting your Indian born children through trauma of moving them back to India or self deport when they age out . H1Bs are exploited by everyone, the very existence of program looks exploratory in nature .It's a cake walk for those who qualify for EB1 (PHDs or Multi country managers or other exceptional abilities). India these days have also competitive opportunities and financial compensation to build your career. USA is good for higher studies ,travel and short-term assignments . The rat race of GC and settling here is just a mirage ...
I am a doctor and have lived in US for sometime. What you said is correct in some part, but if you look back after 15-20 years, you feel like your valuable young time in life is completely passed with struggles and tensions with isolated life with out any relatives in US. I can say, it is good to stay for sometime in US and earn your degrees, and get job and earn money for sometime, and come back to your home country, so that you will have luxury in life. What is the use of getting green card at the age of 45-55 years. If your children were born in US, they will never come to India, even if you earn crores and buy lands and properties in India. You may also be kept in old age home once your kids completely become westernised, and 2nd generation kids will be out of your hands and will no longer belongs to your family tree once they get marry africans, Mexicans and other country people. and your khandani will be closed in India. Think about it professor! Always Money, opportunities, and green card only doesn't matter. You need your existence in your home country and in your family, relatives!! I left Canada because of this Reason and I came back to our mother land India. Desi's feel very proud if they stay in Western countries because usually they think there families will give more respect if they live in foreign. Unfortunately Jevan Canada is not on the radar for extremely talented people. They can go anywhere in the world. Canada doesn’t feature in the top 10 list in the global innovation index. In a world where a country’s economic prosperity is closely coupled with its ability to carry our technology innovation Canada is not favourably positioned.
Sir I agree that US has many good things like u said but the struggle that one has to go through is horrible cuz there is no guarantee when it will end of what will happen to you on the way no matter how talented u are. Life is very short and u can't spend it fighting immigration battles people want to settle down and have a stable life. Not everything is based on talent cuz even H 1B is based on luck. I actually mention in the other video that American dream if it means settling in the US (if you were born in India and do not have extraordinary qualifications), it is over because of far too many Indians in the waiting line. It is not over for people from other countries and those Indians who have highly specialized qualifications such as MDs and PhDs. If the American dream means getting the opportunity to learn and innovate, it is still on for everyone.

There is also the fact that chances are very slim of you getting what u want it's better to try some other country if u don't have the time and patience to do all that. Sanjithji, I heard the US Green Card is approved based on the country of birth not the country of citizenship. Therefore even if you get Canadian Citizenship, you may still have to wait as long as an Indian citizen though your job opportunities in USA will increase due to ease of getting TN visa than H1B visa. That said, please check the rules as of today yourself and do not make your decisions solely based on what I've known from my past.

well said! USA is truly progressive, and full of opportunities. USA - got the best out me, and I got so many opportunities in no time and I am a full time employee of a US based company. This country changed my early retirement mindset to a growth/career oriented mindset. I came to USA, without any high aspirations, and with early retirement mindset. However, after getting immense no of opportunities here, I stand corrected. American dream is still alive! we don't need to be asleep to believe it :-) I am indebted to this country. I would partially disagree with you on the first point, I moved to Canada on a PR, Montreal to be specific from the US and although the US has a lot of opportunities, people on visa are restricted to a lot of them, besides in an event of a layoff, they would end up taking an offer that wouldn't have been their most preferred choice just to stop the 60 day clock. Whereas in Canada, almost all jobs are a part of insurable employment putting you at a little bit of ease and not compromising on the type of opportunity one might be looking for, alongside being a PR makes you eligible for almost all jobs there are, hence providing one with more opportunities. Yes, I agree the pay would take a haircut but the myth around taxes is overhyped, its 2-3% more than the US, not more imo, but YMMV depending on how much you make. Also, the cost of living isn't the same everywhere, for instance Montreal is cheaper than most of the mega cities in North America and offers a very high standard of living, one could easily rent a decent studio in the heart of downtown for CA$800-$1k To conclude, I' would say anyone who falls in a very high income bracket in the US might have difficulties matching it to the CAD, but for most its relatively easy to match your USD salary to CAD, meaning if you made US$100k in the states, its fairly easy to make a similar amount or even a bit higher in CAD in Canada. But this might be capped once they reached a bracket of say CA$250k Just my 2 cents :)
housing and taxes are low in USA because how everything is spread-out. But US does pay extra for healthcare. Salaries in Canada do pay more. Last but not least it's easy getting immigration in Canada, That's NUMBER 1 reason. It's much harder getting PR in US. that's people move here. We get all the good talent. :)

If someone loses his or her job , they will still have health insurance . Renters generally have more rights than in the USA . Immigration is based strictly on skills which is reflected in a point based system . Certain provinces offer $10 per day universal day care services for small children soon to be extended to the entire country . People earning less receive free dental care . If you apply implied Market pricing to these universal benefits it would be a substantial amount . Likely exceed the high taxes that Canadian tend to pay . Also universally available services imply there are fewer people who feel discriminated against . This results in less racial discrimination in Canada . If you compare nominal salaries between USA and Canada , USA will win . But you need to add implied market price of benefits and market price of social peace however you want to calculate these intangibles .

I did my Masters in CS at the University of British Columbia and I am a Canadian Citizen now. Canadian citizens can work in the USA on TN under NAFTA. I am working for a US company in Vancouver and in San Francisco. Also, We have free medical in Canada. Professor, University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia are high world ranking Universities.
You told all is 100% True. When in India I was struggling for Job only American based company offered me job and opportunity. I am always thankful for the American people and country. My Relatives also look down upon me as their kids safe in foreign universities whereas I am working in India I don't have a great salary but still sufficient for survival , but these relatives always taunt me I am happy with myself but these judgemental thinking is what makes you depressed
I have gone through that, now my relative kids (Cousins) are in 40s and 50s with their children in foreign have become rebels. They don't want to meet or invite their parents. Their grandchildren have zero percent of Indian culture having relationships/married people of other nationalities, religion etc. Now they have no face to show to us.

Despite all the issues, the US is still a far better place to live than most other countries. It is also one of the cheapest places to live if you do your research. I immigrated to the US back in the early 1980's. I came from a different background from Pakistan and even though it was a bit of a culture shock, I was already fluent in the language and that made a major difference. The second step I took was paramount in my getting to know the country, its people and culture: I joined the US Army and went off to Mannheim Germany for 2 years. The remainder of my service was at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Looking back, these 4 years were the best years of my life full of new experiences. If you leave any major urban area of the US, you can buy land quite cheap and can actually live off the grid. I have travelled the length and breadth of the US by road. The vast expanse of open land one encounters upon leaving the cities is breathtaking. Land and open land. This is not the case with many other places. And another thing: this is about the only place in the world where if you choose to be alone (not be tied down by culture and religion) you can do it. No regrets here!

Hi Prof, I appreciate your vlog. That's exactly what I thought when I watched some vlogs of Indians, who returned to India from the US and eulogizing that !! They were not even Green Card holders! Your vlog truly paints the correct picture. One point I like to make regarding Canada is that Canada is a gateway to the US. TN1 has no limit and is processed within two-three weeks. H1B hassle is not there, the only similarity is that here also the dependants cannot work in the US for US companies. More than one million Canadians work in the US, and a good portion of them are of Indian origin. And with Covid, a lot of jobs are becoming remote! So that becomes a good option for people in the long-term.
Totally agree, US is the best country for opportunities but life is not all about that. If you factor in the mental health disturbances that this country causes and the psychological damage to the productivity that the immigration system causes particularly for Indian immigrants, everything gets neutralized. I am a physician and I can tell you being on H1B for 20+ years is not healthy. Stress is the root cause of thousands of diseases. Therefore, at the cost of losing 50-60K USD per year, I am chosing my mental peace.
‘Work opportunity’ is just one part of the American dream. The other parts are ‘stable visa status’ and ‘violence-free life’. When millions of people wait for 15 years for a permanent status and thousands get killed in mass shootings, the US is definitely not the most desired country for many. Could be for you, but please also highlight that along with good job opportunities, chances of getting shot dead come along 😊
Fact: Come to US with an expiry date and possiblity of revision. It is land of opportunities but for H1B , lets revisit, it is restricted. So why are we here, mostly we now it would be hard find same amount of money. So we stay as long as we can. Yes apply of green card, but its mostly out of wish full thinking rather than well defined plan. Will a few H1B succeed, yes sure, but is it systematicly difficult. Ratio will be vastly different between the current decade and previous. Reality Canada may has less opportunity, more tax, expensive housing etc. But it also has a level playing ground. So no system policy that making it difficult. So it you get H1B, come here work, apply GC. AND stop dreaming and wake up to reality, be practical if you want continue to live the same way you should start looking at other countries to settle in. If you fail at that, stay and work until you had it enough or they had enough of you.
Many famous individuals like the now CEO's came to the US way back in 1990's and became US citizens in a matter of few years Can you say that the people who are going now or atleast 5 yrs back going can be as successful as Pichai, Nadella etc.. with this huge immigration issues? My personal opinion on this video. 1. Title is 'Biggest Lies H1B Desis in America Tell You' but the topic first spoken about was about Canada 2. Quality of life is not directly proportional to money. Just because you pay less taxes in the US, housing is less expensive doesn't mean the quality of life is higher. 3. Canada is consistently ranked as one of the best countries to live in. 4. If a person is skilled enough there are lot many opportunities in Canada that pay you on par with the US. 5. Off late companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Netflix are starting their offices with ~5k employees. It will increase further in the future. 6. Schools in Canada are relatively cheaper than in the US. 7. Healthcare is free in Canada. 8. Cities in Canada are closer to the US border because up north has more snow and less livable. I am not in Canada but I felt the video is biased.

Buddy even with the immigration hassles US, UK and Germany are way better than Canada. And if free health care is a factor please consider the vaccine distribution performance of US, UK, Germany vis a vis Canada. Only when the system is under stress you come to know it’s actual value. And I can’t see any high speed trains in Canada and smart cities. China Japan and Singapore are some of the best counties in the world as far as infrastructure is concerned. I don’t have anything against the people of Canada. I understand that the quality of life is good in Canada. But also think that the Canadians deserve more considering the taxes they are paying. And yes USA is light years ahead so much so that you can’t compare it to Canada.
It is really commendable that you’re almost close to having a Native American accent which shows your willingness to adapt and learn. I’ve been to LA and Seattle, and even among the Desi tech workers there, not many “choose” to do that. You’re not only making efforts to adapt but also making life easier for your students. My accent is very much Indian. Just that over the years I pronounce many words in a more american way. If you show the same video to an American, they will say the accent is totally Indian

Only some of the words are accented, if you know what I mean. Siddarth, The word 'Native American' has a different meaning in USA than what you used the word for. Native Americans also known as 'American Indians' are adivasis of the continents of North America and South America. Type the term in Wikipedia and you'll get a primer on the same.

I totally agree with him on various points he has mentioned here, for instance regarding Canada, no other country in the world offers opportunities what the US gives, be it Australia, UK , Germany etc. Yes, Germany is to certain extent as they are still not very immigration friendly and one needs to speak German language after a certain point. In U.S, everything is balanced, like gas is cheap, taxes are not that high as compared to other G7 nations. Another spot on was the innovation that happens in the US is no match or much higher to other developed nations and all the industry heads of Indian origin are of the US based firms. One common thing which people complain and is true is very high healthcare cost in the US and compare with the free one in Canada,Australia or UK. Yes though it’s free, people only tend to see the positive aspect but fail to understand that in Canada, there is a long waiting line too! One more issue I fully support with Prof. Dr Chaitanya Sankara is the comparison of a PhD level degree and research from even so called top rung schools like IIT’s ( top worshippers) Indian university and from a mid level U. Great video sir; finally some important topic other than bashing the IIT system. Most of the successful indian professors in the US universities are a product of the IIT system.
Let me try and explain. Many students quit their PhD programs because of their harsh advisers. My adviser was no different. He actually still bashes me. But I never saw it as bashing. I always saw it as honest feedback and need for me to improve. His intentions towards me and all students are always noble. His criticism is rooted in his desire to see you become a good scholar. That is why, while many people quit their PhD programs, I kept improving. If you keep resisting bitter but true feedback, you will never improve and never grow. I just watched netflix series on IIT KGP. It also says all the same things I say.

There is also the issue of exploitation. My roommate was from IIT Kanpur and his advisor was also an IIT Kanpur alumni. He came to US in 1995, while I came in 97. His advisor did not let him go till 2006!!! He got equivalent of 3 phds out of him. Meanwhile I finished my masters, got married, got GC, bought a house while my roommate was still in school! He is now a Prof at university and I always remind him not be the ahole advisor his prof was!

Sir, while I agree on the things you did mention, you have not considered the negatives in living in the US. The number of gun violences that have occurred due to the ease of access to guns, police brutality, racism etc. Now, you seldom see even cops in major European carrying guns. There is a reason why European countries (the developed ones of course) are in the the top ten list of the World Happiness Report. Only in terms of opportunities for an individual if he/she wasn't an immigrant in the country, probably US might be the country with the max no. of opportunities.

There is no field of ENGINEERING RESEARCH now that does not have coding or at least use some already created software packages. Therefore, please convince yourself that whatever in your mind about coding is only due to fear created since your childhood due to your interactions with negative creatures around you. The fear of coding is similar to fear of mathematics subjects like algebra, calculus, transforms etc. These fears are formed in mind due to elders like teachers or seniors at school, parents, siblings, relatives etc. Therefore, please rationalize and discover your limitations so that you can change those limitations to pursue a research based career. Since I don’t know where you live, India or USA, I am not able to tell my opinion so you think about it. If you are a citizen of USA, then you have a number of resources (information centers at universities, go to campuses meet student organizations, counsellors etc.) to actually talk to in person. If you are in India, then you may have to depend on internet and your personal contacts. Also, in USA, the education system being flexible, one could change their career even later in life by pursuing another degree. In India, it is not that easy now due to scarcity of the number of universities for the vast population of India. There is a National Education Policy 2020 which might go into effect in few years will make higher education flexible at least in central government level. If you are Indian and coming to USA for studies, job and ultimately immigration, then please plan accordingly because you won’t be having much funds or time to keep jumping different fields of study. International students are rarely allowed to work outside campuses and therefore you may not have extra funds if you keep hopping to another branch of study after wasting time on one field of study. All problems aspiring Indian youth facing now are due to lack of enough number of universities in Sciences, Technologies, Engineering, Medical sciences etc. for the population of India. Therefore, please have that political cause also on the back of your mind so that generations after you are also NOT in the same dilemma as you. According to the 2021 US report on Best Global Universities Rankings, there are 266 globally ranked universities in USA with a population of just 33 crores and only 59 globally ranked universities in entire India with a population of over 135 crores which is more than 4 times USA. In other words, there is one world ranked university for around 12 lakhs people in USA. In India, there is one world ranked university for around 230 lakhs people implying that many states of India don’t have a world-ranked university in STEM fields at all provoking the intelligent youth of those states to start thinking whether they should leave the country or migrate to another Indian state. The top most Indian University IISc, Bangalore is ranked 520 in the 2021 US News Report. Right now due to lack of highly educated man-power, foreign countries are being involved in many high-tech projects of trains, cars, smartphones, computers, laptops, gadgets, roads, airports, medicines, social-media, e-commerce etc. India-led & India-owned Development is required for the success of India. Increasing the number of universities and their global rankings must be the focus of all intellectuals, Government and NGOs in India now so that India will have choicest man-power to work on latest technologies providing jobs, curing illnesses and improving overall standard of living of all and their families. Anyway, since you are youth trying to set your career, just keep that cause on back-burner and one day when you are successful like our Desi American Professor you could also have a Social Media platform to influence masses, if not become a politician to change the bane, the dilemma of Intellectual Indian Youth like yourself. If you watched the previous video of our Desi American Professor, he explained a perspective of Emotional Intelligence in a easy way though in Hindi. Please watch that video to broaden your thinking, ambitions and perspective on life. You are a professor, I am sure you solve optimization problems on a regular basis based on constraints. For an Indian with no family ties, and no drive to do a Phd, the American dream is best left untouched if settling long term is the ultimate goal. If 6 year work and getting out is the goal, then by all means they should exploit the H1b visa as long as they have it.

Tried lots of random things one of which was intro to ML by Prof.Andrew Ng on coursera. One thing led to another and I started going deeper into the AI / ML side of things while living in India. 2020 i was in US for 1 year tourist visit. I had a desire to do a masters in AI but was hesitant since it is a serious commitment. But with a little push from my family. I applied based on my background and certifications. Got admitted and am back in the US doing a new masters now. As for why I say India is a mess. Back in 2018 after my return to India. A project came up to build a commercial office space in IT area in my city. My father and i had to get a piece of paper/permit to build on our own land. It took 1 year of going to the government authority over and over again to get it. The sense of power and entitlement and bullying they do in India due to big government there is really terrible. Also with demonetization, India’s shadow economy is struggling, purchasing power is lower than before, India was in a recession pre covid19 when I was there, post COVID-19 it took a massive hit. Everyone says India has potential. But it will never be able to live up to it because of our bureaucracy. A bureaucratic setup that kills anything with sluggishness and delays. This story will repeat itself. So for Indians wanting out. Unfortunately, US is not the option due to wait times. They can optimize and try Canada or Australia. Some like me on family based sponsorship who can get GC in 5 years should only try this route. If they can’t do PhD or have money to invest in eb5.

As a student you live near campus. Use campus transport system to travel within campus. Use rental cars for long trips. Think about your masters, not about car.

There is nothing called as free lunch buddy. And the vaccine rollout of Canada has left much to be desired. The true test of the system is when it’s under stress. US, UK, Germany despite having more population performed better vis a vis Canada. And to the best of my knowledge UK and Germany has similar health care systems to that of Canada. Yes, you can easily get visa if you get admitted to a reputed university. I knew someone whose daughter went to study in US. She was their only child and her parents missed her dearly. So they moved to US for higher education(they were in 50s) and are now working on H-1B. But again you are from non-technical background, so hard to comment.

USA is a best place to study aerospace engineering but the job prospects has hassles due to the security clearance requirements of aerospace industries. You may consider non clearance jobs in US. The other alternative is UK and Germany but I guess the problem of security clearance can be present there as well. India has a growing Aerospace industry and all big aerospace companies has a good footprint in India.
Many upcoming industries are hardware & materials based &, can't be open-sourced as they have IP. China is giving huge subsidies & tax incentives with long term strategic vision to their companies. In US, VCs want fast money and are investing only in software &, hardware is being left out as 'hard'. But problem is software (programming languages, ML frameworks, platforms etc) is all open-sourced for the most part while hardware isn't. If Biden 2.9T$ infrastructure plan doesn't change this, in 5 years China will dominate US. They are already leaders in telecommunications, house-hold appliances, high-tech manufacturing, construction, high-speed trains, EVs, solar panels, rare-earth minerals, photonics, .... They are aggressively investing into new industries & are taking older industries one after other.

So True. When i came to US, i was surprised to see the Indians attitude here, very few are warm and fun to interact with, most of them really avoid any small talk/ exchange pleasantries , perhaps they see you as another competitor for Green card. Although they are educated and perhaps on good paying job but they are Extremely Insecure about life , yet on facebook they will show they are having the time of their life.
Wow very strange. I have been living in US since 2005 but never seen any H1B person. All of the people living in H1B used to share tips immigration… how to find deals, how to save money and still travel or have parties. And also used to help each other in finding the best labor to substitute as in those days labor substitution was a reality. We were and are even today the strongest of the friends as we have been through the immigration roller coaster together. Not sure how you guys have had this experience but if u do then it’s so sad and I really feel sorry for anyone behaving in that matter😢

What's the use of money and career opportunities over loosing your prime age living in uncertainty if your very existence depend on your next H1B extension /amendments . You can't be with your family when they need you most back at home due to some immigration process in progress /Travel Bans. Putting your Indian born children through trauma of moving them back to India or self deport when they age out . H1Bs are exploited by everyone, the very existence of program looks exploratory in nature .It's a cake walk for those who qualify for EB1 (PHDs or Multi country managers or other exceptional abilities). India these days have also competitive opportunities and financial compensation to build your career. USA is good for higher studies ,travel and short-term assignments . I am a doctor and have lived in US for sometime. What you said is correct in some part, but if you look back after 15-20 years, you feel like your valuable young time in life is completely passed with struggles and tensions with isolated life with out any relatives in US. I can say, it is good to stay for sometime in US and earn your degrees, and get job and earn money for sometime, and come back to your home country, so that you will have luxury in life. What is the use of getting green card at the age of 45-55 years. If your children were born in US, they will never come to India, even if you earn crores and buy lands and properties in India. You may also be kept in old age home once your kids completely become westernised, and 2nd generation kids will be out of your hands and will no longer belongs to your family tree once they get marry africans, Mexicans and other country people. and your khandani will be closed in India. Think about it professor! Always Money, opportunities, and green card only doesn't matter. You need your existence in your home country and in your family, relatives!! I actually mention in the other video that American dream if it means settling in the US (if you were born in India and do not have extraordinary qualifications), it is over because of far too many Indians in the waiting line. It is not over for people from other countries and those Indians who have highly specialized qualifications such as MDs and PhDs. If the American dream means getting the opportunity to learn and innovate, it is still on for everyone.

Sanjithji, I heard the US Green Card is approved based on the country of birth not the country of citizenship. Therefore even if you get Canadian Citizenship, you may still have to wait as long as an Indian citizen though your job opportunities in USA will increase due to ease of getting TN visa than H1B visa. That said, please check the rules as of today yourself and do not make your decisions solely based on what I've known from my past.

I would partially disagree with you on the first point, I moved to Canada on a PR, Montreal to be specific from the US and although the US has a lot of opportunities, people on visa are restricted to a lot of them, besides in an event of a layoff, they would end up taking an offer that wouldn't have been their most preferred choice just to stop the 60 day clock. Whereas in Canada, almost all jobs are a part of insurable employment putting you at a little bit of ease and not compromising on the type of opportunity one might be looking for, alongside being a PR makes you eligible for almost all jobs there are, hence providing one with more opportunities. Yes, I agree the pay would take a haircut but the myth around taxes is overhyped, its 2-3% more than the US, not more imo, but YMMV depending on how much you make.
Also, the cost of living isn't the same everywhere, for instance Montreal is cheaper than most of the mega cities in North America and offers a very high standard of living, one could easily rent a decent studio in the heart of downtown for CA$800-$1k
To conclude, I' would say anyone who falls in a very high income bracket in the US might have difficulties matching it to the CAD, but for most its relatively easy to match your USD salary to CAD, meaning if you made US$100k in the states, its fairly easy to make a similar amount or even a bit higher in CAD in Canada. But this might be capped once they reached a bracket of say CA$250k

housing and taxes are low in USA because how everything is spread-out. But US does pay extra for healthcare. Salaries in Canada do pay more. Last but not least it's easy getting immigration in Canada, That's NUMBER 1 reason. It's much harder getting PR in US. that's people move here. We get all the good talent. :)

If someone loses his or her job , they will still have health insurance . Renters generally have more rights than in the USA . Immigration is based strictly on skills which is reflected in a point based system . Certain provinces offer $10 per day universal day care services for small children soon to be extended to the entire country . People earning less receive free dental care . If you apply implied Market pricing to these universal benefits it would be a substantial amount . Likely exceed the high taxes that Canadian tend to pay . Also universally available services imply there are fewer people who feel discriminated against . This results in less racial discrimination in Canada . If you compare nominal salaries between USA and Canada , USA will win . But you need to add implied market price of benefits and market price of social peace however you want to calculate these intangibles .

It is also one of the cheapest places to live if you do your research.
I immigrated to the US back in the early 1980's. I came from a different background from Pakistan and even though it was a bit of a culture shock, I was already fluent in the language and that made a major difference. The second step I took was paramount in my getting to know the country, its people and culture: I joined the US Army and went off to Mannheim Germany for 2 years. The remainder of my service was at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Looking back, these 4 years were the best years of my life full of new experiences. If you leave any major urban area of the US, you can buy land quite cheap and can actually live off the grid. I have travelled the length and breadth of the US by road. The vast expanse of open land one encounters upon leaving the cities is breathtaking. Land and open land. This is not the case with many other places. And another thing: this is about the only place in the world where if you choose to be alone (not be tied down by culture and religion) you can do it. No regrets here!

Hi Prof, I appreciate your vlog. That's exactly what I thought when I watched some vlogs of Indians, who returned to India from the US and eulogizing that !! They were not even Green Card holders! Your vlog truly paints the correct picture. One point I like to make regarding Canada is that Canada is a gateway to the US. TN1 has no limit and is processed within two-three weeks. H1B hassle is not there, the only similarity is that here also the dependants cannot work in the US for US companies. More than one million Canadians work in the US, and a good portion of them are of Indian origin. And with Covid, a lot of jobs are becoming remote! So that becomes a good option for people in the long-term.

Totally agree, US is the best country for opportunities but life is not all about that. If you factor in the mental health disturbances that this country causes and the psychological damage to the productivity that the immigration system causes particularly for Indian immigrants, everything gets neutralized. I am a physician and I can tell you being on H1B for 20+ years is not healthy. Stress is the root cause of thousands of diseases. Therefore, at the cost of losing 50-60K USD per year, I am chosing my mental peace.

‘Work opportunity’ is just one part of the American dream. The other parts are ‘stable visa status’ and ‘violence-free life’. When millions of people wait for 15 years for a permanent status and thousands get killed in mass shootings, the US is definitely not the most desired country for many. It is land of opportunities but for H1B , lets revisit, it is restricted. So why are we here, mostly we now it would be hard find same amount of money. So we stay as long as we can. Yes apply of green card, but its mostly out of wish full thinking rather than well defined plan. Will a few H1B succeed, yes sure, but is it systematicly difficult. Ratio will be vastly different between the current decade and previous. Reality Canada may has less opportunity, more tax, expensive housing etc. But it also has a level playing ground. So no system policy that making it difficult. So it you get H1B, come here work, apply GC. AND stop dreaming and wake up to reality, be practical if you want continue to live the same way you should start looking at other countries to settle in. If you fail at that, stay and work until you had it enough or they had enough of you.

2. Quality of life is not directly proportional to money. Just because you pay less taxes in the US, housing is less expensive doesn't mean the quality of life is higher.
3. Canada is consistently ranked as one of the best countries to live in.
4. If a person is skilled enough there are lot many opportunities in Canada that pay you on par with the US.
5. Off late companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Netflix are starting their offices with ~5k employees. It will increase further in the future.
6. Schools in Canada are relatively cheaper than in the US.
7. Healthcare is free in Canada.
8. Cities in Canada are closer to the US border because up north has more snow and less livable.

Buddy even with the immigration hassles US, UK and Germany are way better than Canada. And if free health care is a factor please consider the vaccine distribution performance of US, UK, Germany vis a vis Canada. Only when the system is under stress you come to know it’s actual value. And I can’t see any high speed trains in Canada and smart cities. China Japan and Singapore are some of the best counties in the world as far as infrastructure is concerned. Only some of the words are accented, if you know what I mean.

Siddarth, The word 'Native American' has a different meaning in USA than what you used the word for. Native Americans also known as 'American Indians' are adivasis of the continents of North America and South America. Type the term in Wikipedia and you'll get a primer on the same.

I totally agree with him on various points he has mentioned here, for instance regarding Canada, no other country in the world offers opportunities what the US gives, be it Australia, UK , Germany etc. Yes, Germany is to certain extent as they are still not very immigration friendly and one needs to speak German language after a certain point. In U.S, everything is balanced, like gas is cheap, taxes are not that high as compared to other G7 nations. Another spot on was the innovation that happens in the US is no match or much higher to other developed nations and all the industry heads of Indian origin are of the US based firms. One common thing which people complain and is true is very high healthcare cost in the US and compare with the free one in Canada,Australia or UK. Yes though it’s free, people only tend to see the positive aspect but fail to understand that in Canada, there is a long waiting line too!
One more issue I fully support with Prof. Dr Chaitanya Sankara is the comparison of a PhD level degree and research from even so called top rung schools like IIT’s ( top worshippers) Indian university and from a mid level U. S university. The quality of research even in mid level U. S university is unmatched or even sometimes unheard in India. Also the list goes on on other videos like ‘ topper worship ‘ etc

Great video sir; finally some important topic other than bashing the IIT system. Most of the successful indian professors in the US universities are a product of the IIT system.
Let me try and explain. Many students quit their PhD programs because of their harsh advisers. My adviser was no different. He actually still bashes me. But I never saw it as bashing. I always saw it as honest feedback and need for me to improve. His intentions towards me and all students are always noble. His criticism is rooted in his desire to see you become a good scholar. That is why, while many people quit their PhD programs, I kept improving. If you keep resisting bitter but true feedback, you will never improve and never grow. I just watched netflix series on IIT KGP. It also says all the same things I say.

There is also the issue of exploitation. My roommate was from IIT Kanpur and his advisor was also an IIT Kanpur alumni. He came to US in 1995, while I came in 97. His advisor did not let him go till 2006!!! He got equivalent of 3 phds out of him. Meanwhile I finished my masters, got married, got GC, bought a house while my roommate was still in school! He is now a Prof at university and I always remind him not be the ahole advisor his prof was!

Sir, while I agree on the things you did mention, you have not considered the negatives in living in the US. The number of gun violences that have occurred due to the ease of access to guns, police brutality, racism etc. Now, you seldom see even cops in major European carrying guns. There is a reason why European countries (the developed ones of course) are in the the top ten list of the World Happiness Report. Only in terms of opportunities for an individual if he/she wasn't an immigrant in the country, probably US might be the country with the max no. of opportunities.

If you get into biotechnology, it is all about analyzing huge number of samples (statistics, data science) which in turn means lots of coding. There is no field of ENGINEERING RESEARCH now that does not have coding or at least use some already created software packages. Therefore, please convince yourself that whatever in your mind about coding is only due to fear created since your childhood due to your interactions with negative creatures around you. The fear of coding is similar to fear of mathematics subjects like algebra, calculus, transforms etc. These fears are formed in mind due to elders like teachers or seniors at school, parents, siblings, relatives etc. Therefore, please rationalize and discover your limitations so that you can change those limitations to pursue a research based career.
Since I don’t know where you live, India or USA, I am not able to tell my opinion so you think about it. If you are a citizen of USA, then you have a number of resources (information centers at universities, go to campuses meet student organizations, counsellors etc.) to actually talk to in person. If you are in India, then you may have to depend on internet and your personal contacts. Also, in USA, the education system being flexible, one could change their career even later in life by pursuing another degree. In India, it is not that easy now due to scarcity of the number of universities for the vast population of India. There is a National Education Policy 2020 which might go into effect in few years will make higher education flexible at least in central government level.
If you are Indian and coming to USA for studies, job and ultimately immigration, then please plan accordingly because you won’t be having much funds or time to keep jumping different fields of study. International students are rarely allowed to work outside campuses and therefore you may not have extra funds if you keep hopping to another branch of study after wasting time on one field of study.
All problems aspiring Indian youth facing now are due to lack of enough number of universities in Sciences, Technologies, Engineering, Medical sciences etc. for the population of India. Therefore, please have that political cause also on the back of your mind so that generations after you are also NOT in the same dilemma as you.
According to the 2021 US report on Best Global Universities Rankings, there are 266 globally ranked universities in USA with a population of just 33 crores and only 59 globally ranked universities in entire India with a population of over 135 crores which is more than 4 times USA. In other words, there is one world ranked university for around 12 lakhs people in USA. In India, there is one world ranked university for around 230 lakhs people implying that many states of India don’t have a world-ranked university in STEM fields at all provoking the intelligent youth of those states to start thinking whether they should leave the country or migrate to another Indian state. The top most Indian University IISc, Bangalore is ranked 520 in the 2021 US News Report.
Right now due to lack of highly educated man-power, foreign countries are being involved in many high-tech projects of trains, cars, smartphones, computers, laptops, gadgets, roads, airports, medicines, social-media, e-commerce etc. India-led & India-owned Development is required for the success of India. Increasing the number of universities and their global rankings must be the focus of all intellectuals, Government and NGOs in India now so that India will have choicest man-power to work on latest technologies providing jobs, curing illnesses and improving overall standard of living of all and their families. Anyway, since you are youth trying to set your career, just keep that cause on back-burner and one day when you are successful like our Desi American Professor you could also have a Social Media platform to influence masses, if not become a politician to change the bane, the dilemma of Intellectual Indian Youth like yourself.
If you watched the previous video of our Desi American Professor, he explained a perspective of Emotional Intelligence in a easy way though in Hindi. Please watch that video to broaden your thinking, ambitions and perspective on life. Also, I encourage you to make notes of life topics and try to solve your dilemmas, hurdles and goals just the same way as you make notes for your technical studies. Many Politicians/CEOs of big corporations etc. do the same. You should do the same too so you have clarity of thought when you become someone big in your life.
Until the last minute, keep thinking and keep making notes of your abilities, financial constraints, your social supports, your goals etc. Don’t be shy to change your dreams when they’re not aligning with what makes you comfortable. Also, study of psychology as a hobby appears to be very much required by Indians to be able to convince their parents and other elders in families or the neighborhood.
Rational Critical Thinking is very important in analyzing flood of information from various sources (political discourses, News, Internet, friends, student leaders, teachers, books, parents, religious leaders etc.). One shouldn’t just believe somethings and then deduce conclusions based on that. One must first digest the information and then only deduce conclusions based on that.
Let’s say if the information digested is not healthy (poisonous), deductions/inductions based on that harm oneself/others….If the information digested is healthy, deductions based on that benefit oneself/others. Hence comprehension, discernment of good & bad and critical thinking must be practiced just as one practices any sport or any profession. Hope you too pursue the study of Logic with same zeal as a Computer Science engineer or a Medical scientist/doctor. (Wikipedia is a good place to start/initiate studying Logic, critical thinking, politics, business etc. Then you may research on various other internet websites)
Concluding, we are able to this informative video from few thousand miles away living in a different time-zones and be able to communicate because we have a high-speed internet connection. Those who cannot travel around the world may still edify themselves, make friends and build a network of researchers or research websites via internet right from their own homes/facilities. Let’s pray and wish a day dawns when one don’t need pay high tuition fees or travel across India (to institutes like JNU, Hyderabad university, IIT, IIM, AIMS etc.) or elsewhere in the world (like USA, Australia, Canada, UK etc.) to study if one has no money to study sciences, medicine, business, law, politics, technologies, acting, cinema, sociology, psychology, philosophy, religion etc. Just a computer and internet connection will do. It is possible to reduce the costs of education by a good mix of online classes & necessary in-person classroom lectures and labs. Also, Girl-children who are under several restrictions by their traditional-parents could get educated from their own homes under supervision of their traditional parents.
In summary, you just can’t have one priority over other forever. In order to identify what will make you lead a happy life is solely dependent on your own carefully calibrated research spending enormous amounts of time, albeit with several inputs from your ambience.

You are a professor, I am sure you solve optimization problems on a regular basis based on constraints. For an Indian with no family ties, and no drive to do a Phd, the American dream is best left untouched if settling long term is the ultimate goal. If 6 year work and getting out is the goal, then by all means they should exploit the H1b visa as long as they have it.

@@DesiAmericanProfessor I’m doing pretty good now. Having left the US 3 years ago, I took time to figure out my next moves. Tried lots of random things one of which was intro to ML by Prof.Andrew Ng on coursera. One thing led to another and I started going deeper into the AI / ML side of things while living in India. 2020 i was in US for 1 year tourist visit. I had a desire to do a masters in AI but was hesitant since it is a serious commitment. But with a little push from my family. I applied based on my background and certifications. Got admitted and am back in the US doing a new masters now.
As for why I say India is a mess. Back in 2018 after my return to India. A project came up to build a commercial office space in IT area in my city. My father and i had to get a piece of paper/permit to build on our own land. It took 1 year of going to the government authority over and over again to get it. The sense of power and entitlement and bullying they do in India due to big government there is really terrible. Also with demonetization, India’s shadow economy is struggling, purchasing power is lower than before, India was in a recession pre covid19 when I was there, post COVID-19 it took a massive hit.
Everyone says India has potential. But it will never be able to live up to it because of our bureaucracy. A bureaucratic setup that kills anything with sluggishness and delays. This story will repeat itself.
So for Indians wanting out. Unfortunately, US is not the option due to wait times. They can optimize and try Canada or Australia. Some like me on family based sponsorship who can get GC in 5 years should only try this route. If they can’t do PhD or have money to invest in eb5.

As a student you live near campus. Use campus transport system to travel within campus. Use rental cars for long trips. Think about your masters, not about car.
People usually live close to campus or a place near public transport to go to campus. Then they take uber/lyft or public transport to get groceries.

There is nothing called as free lunch buddy. And the vaccine rollout of Canada has left much to be desired. The true test of the system is when it’s under stress. US, UK, Germany despite having more population performed better vis a vis Canada. And to the best of my knowledge UK and Germany has similar health care systems to that of Canada. And they do deliver. This is directly tied to their organic industrial capabilities and their relative strength in the international world order.

Yes, you can easily get visa if you get admitted to a reputed university. I knew someone whose daughter went to study in US. She was their only child and her parents missed her dearly. So they moved to US for higher education(they were in 50s) and are now working on H-1B.

USA is a best place to study aerospace engineering but the job prospects has hassles due to the security clearance requirements of aerospace industries. You may consider non clearance jobs in US. The other alternative is UK and Germany but I guess the problem of security clearance can be present there as well. India has a growing Aerospace industry and all big aerospace companies has a good footprint in India.
Many upcoming industries are hardware & materials based &, can't be open-sourced as they have IP. China is giving huge subsidies & tax incentives with long term strategic vision to their companies. In US, VCs want fast money and are investing only in software &, hardware is being left out as 'hard'. But problem is software (programming languages, ML frameworks, platforms etc) is all open-sourced for the most part while hardware isn't. If Biden 2.9T$ infrastructure plan doesn't change this, in 5 years China will dominate US.
They are already leaders in telecommunications, house-hold appliances, high-tech manufacturing, construction, high-speed trains, EVs, solar panels, rare-earth minerals, photonics, ....
They are aggressively investing into new industries & are taking older industries one after other.
