I appreciate how similar schalas theme and magus's theme is. How the same notes can be twisted to mean such different things. Imagine a duet with those two, their melodies would meld with sweet dissonance.
Luna 2000 I don't know if I can explain it well... But the 8 notes just after the intro of Magus's theme are echoed in schalas theme early on It's not uncommon for music to echo other tracks in Squaresoft RPGs, there's lots of it in ff6 too
@Lucifer Faust I think you are confusing the themes, I can't hear any difference at all from this theme and "Magus theme". The only theme similar to this one in the beginning is "Zeal Palace" (and only the 3 first notes) and "Corridors of Time" a bit because the instrument sounds similar but they are complete different songs.
I can hear what you’re talking about. Change the pitch a bit, make some of the last notes end differently (the Magus Battle ends lower), and you’ve got a leitmotif for the Zeal Siblings. Good ear!
"You feel the foreboding too? Don't worry. It will be all right." This hits a lot harder voiced than I thought it would. The lady voicing Schala is spot on. Well done!
Ahhhhhhh releasing both siblings one right after the other ahhhhhhh I love the contrast between them too. Like how cold Magus views the world as an adult, like he's given up on being good, while Schala knows she's going to die but still refuses to turn over to evil...just...guh, so good. I can't word right now. This is my favorite song in all of the soundtrack and I am in love with these lyrics.
I remember how much this part of the game resonated with me. Like Janus, I am a male whose only sibling is a sister several years my senior. In my case, she is about nine years older, so we might have looked a bit like these two at some point. I remember how much I looked up to her and how much we loved each other when I was Janus's age, too. Thank you so much, MOI team, for helping convey the emotion of this scene so well through your music and beautiful voices!
And may I also add that you don’t get a very good conclusion on what ends up happening to her in the end, even with the ds version’s extra content, since Chrono Trigger is kinda cursed to never get a true sequel
This is beautiful. It's so somber, yet hopeful. It's got a lullaby feel to it that def feels reflective of Schala's warmth and care for Janus, and her wish to soothe his worries, even if she admits to herself that she probably won't be able to. You can tell, even if you haven't played the game, that she's headed for tragedy, poor thing. I wish she would have stood up to her mother. But I suppose Zeal was too far gone at this point. Once we get to Queen Zeal we'll have met all the major players, I think. I wonder if you'll hold off on her until we get to the kingdom, and just focus on the first parts of the game...although since Lavos and Schala have been introduced, Zeal's basic motivations aren't super spoilery at this point. Janus though...haha I think he's the main one that needs the build up of the first half of the game before we find out his fate. --here is where the black winds truly stir-- The art is beautiful. Juno's designs are always delightful. They always feel very organic and alive, with the stylish shading, clear emotion, and great posing. I love the play of light and shadow along the bottom of her dress, as well as her reflection in the window. I can see Mel's influence in that first image too, mmmm that light coming from the window is sparkly and lovely. And that *backlighting*. Kikyo and Mel combined with Juno's posing is just a great combination
This song perfectly shows Schala as a whole, always kind and caring to Janus, and even later sacrificing herself to save Chrono and the group, despite knowing very little if anything about them, except that they're innocent of what Queen Zeal accuses them of. It goes to show how selfless she is
TWO NEW VOICES OMG THEY'RE BOTH SO WONDERFUL Uprisings voice is so inspiring to me because it is so simple, and it doesn't have all the crazy stuff like vibrato, yet it still sounds beautiful. That's the kind of voice I hope to have someday.
Uprising makes the best sister! This came out amazingly, and everyone involved in this did awesome! The art, Uprising as Schala, and the orchestral version used is beautiful.
This is so soothing.... It makes me think of a lullaby. Granted, Schala's theme always made me think of a lullaby just by how it was scored, but the lyrics strengthen that association considerably. I like how Schala and Janus both have pointed ears in the drawings. It's a nice touch of detail that you don't get in the game. I know, that's mostly because of the limitations of the sprite animation BUT STILL!!! I like it. I also like the details of her dress. It's very different from the official artwork, but I like it much better. The ornate look just feels more princess-y. My opinions of the voice acting are pretty much identical to all previous comments. Really, how many ways can I say it is a perfect fit and is now my new head-canon for how these characters sound? Uprising and Kylie did wonderfully and I look forward to hearing more from them in the completed musical. Schala's Theme is another of my long time favorites from the game soundtrack. I will just sit for a solid ten minutes without pushing buttons when I hit this point in the game so that I can bask in the pretty, pretty music. Chances are the musical will cover most of them. In fact, you guys already covered over half. I say most because I strongly suspect Singing Mountain is not going to be included in the musical. Very pretty song. Never made it into the game. Considering how many other tracks that have to be squeezed in, an unreleased track probably isn't going to be one of them. And I am okay with this. What more can I even say here that I haven't said already in previous comments? Probably nothing. Well, time to break the repeat button. SO PRETTY!!!
Considering how much content there is that re-uses tracks, I'd say it's likely they'll use Singing Mountain for something like Denadoro Mountains or Death Peak instead of re-using an instrumental they've already used. MOTI is resourceful like that ^^ Don't give up hope.
Oh I am hoping. I'm never going to stop hoping, but...I'm a bit of a pessimist. I find that if I expect the worst possible outcome (in this case no Singing Mountain track) and it doesn't happen then it's a happy surprise. If it does happen, then I'm not disappointing because I was expecting it. Minimizing potential misery through pessimism. It works.
3 years late, but....I'm glad Alex used Singing Mountain in the musical. Reusing the music that usually goes with those areas might have gotten tedious fast....maybe. Depends on how much you like the song that Squaresoft put in there in those spots to begin with.
Magus : "If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If I am to die, I must simply laugh." Schala/Kid : "If the world's gonna be destroyed, then let it be destroyed! If history is gonna be changed, then let it bloody well be changed! I'll show ya what's a Radical Dreamers really dream about!"
@Lavos No, that is far beyond a parasite's capabilities. Once something dies, they stay dead, and you were destroyed completely and utterly throughout all of time. That should have never happened because it is literally impossible for you to comeback!
@Lavos you were literally leaping through time due to the unique position provided by the black Omen, as it being at every single point of time at once, so when you were killed by Chrono, you were also killed in every single era single second of your life at once, meaning that there was nothing you could come back from. Death is death, its kinda permanent.
@Lavos you made Zeal and most of her people believe you'd be some kind of god. But the true magic power you did erase from time: Schala, who didn't trust you nor your priests
I wept. This breaks my heart every time... A boy too young to have chosen, and the girl whose choices were taken away... Thank you for putting voice to their thoughts and feelings!
WHY. CAN'T. I. SAVE. SCHALA? That's something that bothers me even today and i don't know what should i feel when i heard that song. Anyway, awesome song that was!
Because it is necessary and would either create a complete different time-line in which all mankind got whiped out in a civil war between her and Zeals troups OR you'd create a time-line full of loop holes and paradoxes.
Schalla's welcoming softness is properly represented here. Unfortunately for the character, her softness denies her the strength required to escape her mother and Lavos.
This made me feel wonderful. I just wanted to see her. Such a humane and beautiful character, she had so many hearts with rather brief appearences. I love her so, but her fate broke my heart, even though she is freed in Chrono Cross, I always wanted to see her reunited with Janus, finally in peace
She gave feels to enough people for Square to stick her in Chrono Cross and have the good ending be where you essentially rescue her. Some people (i.e. me) really loved that, but others thought it was a pointless addition. These same people tend not to like that particular game in general, though.
This is all the more heartwrenching years from then. We've grown so far apart. I miss what I had with the one and only sibling I never ever fought with.
I loved this! Uprising's voice fit so well for Schala. By the way, I highly reccomend listening to the To Far Away Times album. It contains 10 songs from Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, most of which contain lyrics. It was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, and the lyrics are incredibly well written. If you need any inspiration for lyrics for some of the songs, or are just interested in well-done remasters of the songs from Mitsuda himself, I reccomend listening to the album.
I get the impression that once upon a time, back on the cold surface, this was a lullaby for mothers to sing to their children to get them through the cruel Ice Age. Hearing it from Schala is befitting, as it reflects she's the closest thing Janus has to a mother now.
That's the Latin pronunciation. The letter J has a Y sound. ....Also Janus is the ancient Roman god of thresholds so using the Latin form makes sense. Same with how they pronounce Magus. +KickyFut Interesting question and one that is surprisingly hard for me to answer. There are reasons its just tricky for me to translate my thoughts into words sometimes. Let's see....in one of my original story concepts I have a race of what are essentially space elves with cat eyes and elongated canines who speak Latin because everything sounds cooler in Latin. I don't pronounce Caesar Salad or Dressing the way everyone else does. I do a hard C and pronounce the 'ae' as 'eye' so it sounds like the German Kaiser....which is how it is pronounced in Latin and this confuses waiters and waitresses because NOBODY ELSE PRONOUNCES IT RIGHT...and this bugs me. I habitually sing those Final Fantasy songs with Latin lyrics from memory because I took the time to memorize ALL OF THEM. I sit down with my old textbook and try to create original insults to throw at people who annoy me too much. I've yet to have the opportunity to try any of them out, and have forgotten most of them anyways. But this is fun for me. I like learning about names too. ....And I just realized I am getting off topic. Sorry. Hazard of the autistic brain.
Lol, wow that *is* pretty hardcore! Proper pronunciation is always important, I always get bugged by our U.S. marine motto Semper Fidelis, as the marines themselves mispronounce it: "Semper Fye(dallis) !" Be wary of insults, tho they're completely useless if people don't understand you, keep in mind all the romance languages come from it, so they may be able to glean a meaning! Also, you might want to give Caesar salad a pass, as it literally was invented in the 1920's by a guy named Caesar... His name was pronounced the common way.😅 You should try and find a Latin club, as there are many people who do latin for fun! I haven't looked, but I know they exist as a co-worker is in one. Enjoy!😁
At first it sounded like Schala was voiced by Eissebee (sorry if I misspelled it) but as usual I'm horrible at recogninzing voices XD Great job Uprising, you really have a gorgeous voice!

This is beautiful, and it kinda makes me wish I could animate, so I could make this animated. I'm imagining showing a montage of Schala's early memories with the Queen, then after she gives Janus the amulet, it continues into Zeal getting power-drunk on Lavos's energy and slowly becoming a neglectful and strictly controlling mother, then goes back to the present and shows Schala's reflection as the Dream Devourer. All this from a song because of its amazing and astral sound design and lyrics. Thank you for this.
No, thank you! I wish I knew many others who loved Chrono Trigger as much as I do! I am actually not a big fan of musicals but this is something special. I love all yalls voices.
I appreciate how similar schalas theme and magus's theme is. How the same notes can be twisted to mean such different things. Imagine a duet with those two, their melodies would meld with sweet dissonance.

mmmgive me all that sad tragic sibling relationships yes good my heart hurts
huge mood amigo
indeed. i feel the same
mine too
What's a sibling...? And...what's it like...to have one?

Foreshadowing parallels!
Magus, the man who lost everything because of Lavos, his mother, his kingdom, his lovely sister.
After that, you understand his hate.

thank u scoli ^^
I agree! IT really is, awesome job.
Omg this song nearly made me cry seeing their bond especially in such scary times... especially the picture at 0:27 .
We just need a copy of the game that has these excellent actors voicing the characters' scripts
Uprising makes the best sister! This came out amazingly, and everyone involved in this did awesome! The art, Uprising as Schala, and the orchestral version used is beautiful.
/hears this
/trips and plows 5 feet into the ground
woah that's beautiful
This is very sad and beautiful. Both the art and singing are gorgeous.

I could listen to Uprising and Ann’s voices all day 💖
The fact that Uprising plays both Schala and Lavos is a touch I really like because Lavos absorbs Schala to become the Dream Devourer
Even though he had been completely and utterly destroyed beforehand. There was no way that should have been possible.
@Lavos No, that is far beyond a parasite's capabilities. Once something dies, they stay dead, and you were destroyed completely and utterly throughout all of time. That should have never happened because it is literally impossible for you to comeback!

@Lavos I know very well what goes on in that mess of a story.
@Lavos you made Zeal and most of her people believe you'd be some kind of god.
But the true magic power you did erase from time: Schala, who didn't trust you nor your priests
I JUST GOT TO THIS PART IN THE GAME YESTERDAY.
SCHALA IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS NOW.
Uprising, I love your voice! Its so heavenly and I just AAAAAAAAAAAAH~~
AAAA AA AAAAAA THANK KIKy o
Uprising's voice just screams "Tragic Older Sister".
This is the same person who voices Mipha in the Zelda Musical Bytes if I'm not mistaken.
You do get to save her in Cross, though.
Because it is necessary and would either create a complete different time-line in which all mankind got whiped out in a civil war between her and Zeals troups OR you'd create a time-line full of loop holes and paradoxes.

You're welcome.
Just kill zeal
Ktfinns t
Black Omen. It was so satisfying to see Zeal's downfall. :)
Crazy how deep the development of Janus/Magus really was...
Aww schala
I haven't played Chrono Trigger but I guess this is the character that gives the feels to everyone , right ?
Actually several of the characters have rather tragic or dark backstories (not all but I can think of like 4 or 5 off the top of my head)
José Luis Ramos Well... Someone has a soft spot just for her.
But, yeah... Her story is sad😔
She gave feels to enough people for Square to stick her in Chrono Cross and have the good ending be where you essentially rescue her. Some people (i.e. me) really loved that, but others thought it was a pointless addition. These same people tend not to like that particular game in general, though.
The Little Ghost name one playable character other than Crono without a sad backstory?
Carstea Florentin Ayla :p
I wasn't expecting you to bring Antiquity(12.000 BC) so soon, and Schala's theme surpassed my expectations! Good work, guys ^^
Wow. Two of my favorite tracks from my favorite game. One after another. I can't say how happy I am thanks to you. Just... thank you so much *sob* ^^
oh my god your voices are so beautiful aaaaaaa
*Gasp* whoa it’s me but, not.
This is all the more heartwrenching years from then. We've grown so far apart. I miss what I had with the one and only sibling I never ever fought with.
Schala's theme and her story as a whole never ceases to give me the feels...she deserved to be Queen and live a better life...along with little Janus.
I loved this! Uprising's voice fit so well for Schala.
By the way, I highly reccomend listening to the To Far Away Times album. It contains 10 songs from Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, most of which contain lyrics. Your voice is so clear and beautiful Uprising!!!
Schala is the real hero of the series. Without her sacrifice Lavos would her have destroyed everything.
*ugly sobbing* uPRISING'S VOICE IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND ANSJDJJDJSJW ALSO ANN IS A GREAT JANUS TOO *AAAAAAAAAAAAA-*
-also why is it yanus-
"J" in some other languages is pronounced "y".
That's the Latin pronunciation. The letter J has a Y sound. ....Also Janus is the ancient Roman god of thresholds so using the Latin form makes sense. Same with how they pronounce Magus. That is also the proper Latin pronunciation.
....I may have taken Latin as a foreign language course in college and enjoyed it a little too much.
Umm... How can one possibly enjoy Latin too much?? 😕
A lot of the remaining reasons boil down to me being a bit of a linguistics nerd in spite of my never having taken a course in said field. with all those endings in the game, the one i really wanted was to find and save schala.
DING, DING, *some stuff more* BEAUTIFUL.
Ok, we have Magus and Schala... I wonder, will we get Zeal (In Zeal Palace or Black Omen, perhaps?) for evil mom?
Ahhh, el tema de Schala, una triste historia, definitivamente le hicieron justicia... ¡Gran video!
Sensacionallll!!!! Maravilhoso! Saudações do Brasil!
YAAAASS UPRISING! YOU ARE MY QUEEN! Wonderful job!!
It gave me shivers! Really awesome guys, your musical is a big relief for not having a remake of Chrono Trigger. Makes me feel like I am in the game!
Uprising your voice is so beautiful! I also love the art in this video its spectacular! Keep up the great work ❤
At first it sounded like Schala was voiced by Eissebee (sorry if I misspelled it) but as usual I'm horrible at recogninzing voices XD
Great job Uprising, you really have a gorgeous voice!
Eissebee.. ;w; I haven't heard that name in soo long ;w;
This is the most powerful song to come out of this project.
Damn I just want to marry Uprising's voice. And listen Ann all day.
I can't express how beautiful what I just saw and Heard 🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍😍😍 it's like the first time
Man this resonated with me hard. I'd always found Schala's theme to be beautiful beyond words, and to hear this made my heart shatter and reassemble real fast. Well done!
I was not ready for the beauty of this one.
Schala’s story is sad anyone here tried to save her every time u play the game?
I just screamed after I saw this video in my notification box
Wow! Beautiful job, Uprising!! Your voice is so pure and emotional.
Not looking for a relationship right now, but when the times comes for a child and it's a daughter, I know what I'm naming her...
Possibly my favorite piece from the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, now with sad and beautiful lyrics.
My favorite character in all of Chrono Trigger!! JANUS
i found a hidden treasure. This song breathes so much life into this part of the story.
Just recently came upon a few videos here on my feed the other day and these are all amazing. I can't wait to see more of them. Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games. As well as many others of course. Plus I love the music from Chrono Trigger
Schala
aka. The one that we couldn't save.
Deman Dema
Except in Chrono Cross, but we don’t talk about that.
Uprising and Ann, the stuff of legends 👍
We are not worthy of the incredible art
Man as a former player of chrono trigger this is amazing. Great work of art. Thank you very much for all the artwork and sound
Que jogo maravilhoso, melodias maravilhosas, PERSONAGENS MARAVILHOSOS,EU AMO CHRONO TRIGGER
Sou do brasil>> SOU MUITO FÃ DE VOCÊS, O TRABALHO É INCRÍVEL! AAA QUE NOSTALGIA!!
eu tbm cara eu amo o jogo e o canal deles
Another amazing song that hits your heart.
Uprising, I don't know if you'll ever read this, but you did an AMAZING job voicing Schala! You sound downright angelic!
I see Queen Zeal has already found and downvoted this video.
Been using Reddit too much? Haha.
So did Lavos.
And Dalton.
Uprising, your voice is awesome... I'm crying...;-;
I love her voice and the song! She reminds me of aerith gainsborough
Uprising, your voice is astonishing. Thank you and the others for this and the others.
Thank you very much!!
No, thank you! I wish I knew many others who loved Chrono Trigger as much as I do! I am actually not a big fan of musicals but this is something special. I love all yalls voices.

Slowing this down to 90% speed makes it even better.
It's amazing how Uprising's voice can go from terrifying and monstrous to soothing and calm.
