This is more than merely great playing. Your creativity and proficiency are top-notch John. This is incredible original music. It's easy to see your influence by Tool, but at the same time, this is unique and fresh music.
+Matt Flacche Thanks for the great feedback Matt! That's about exactly how I perceive of our music - I'm influenced by Carey and other progressive legends like Peart, but Ben brings a whole different background and skill set, so the music benefits from this cross-pollination.
My fucking god there are a lot of pattern changes what a great memory and what a great creativity to create something like this, this is awesome looking forward for the album!
This is how you feel music. Through every note, every drum strike or guitar note that's played together. When you feel how the song should go, it puts your hands where they are supposed to go. You know to drag it up the neck, or slide them down the neck and make it darker, and sounds just come out that mesh and blend and seem to float around and play to the listener. This isn't just playing music written on a piece of paper. This is playing what your feeling. Making feelings with sounds. Well done..
This song is a masterpiece I swear 😂. And as a Tool fan, others saying you borrowed from Carey are obviously not as advanced as you. Last I checked, Danny wasn't the first or last to use polyrhythms or tom grooves. Not an insult aimed at them, but a huge compliment on your part. The drumming is in a world of it's own. It's quite unique and surely took a deal of time to orchestrate. Huge props to you man. I've been listening to this song a lot since this playthrough came out. I was wondering when the full album is coming out and if there's going to be a physical copy available? Thanks again for the great work and the same to the rest of Portraits.
Hi there, and many thanks for this thoughtful feedback. It really makes all of the work that went into this song (and many others on the album that we're currently mixing) worthwhile.
Absolutely brilliant man! I can really appreciate all the meticulousness and creativity that went into making this drum track. The drums really suit the mood of the song. The production on this is fantastic, happy to see this project coming together so well. Hell of a song, can't wait for the rest of the album!
Great playing John!! The polyrhythms, and odd time signatures in the piece are great!! I love 7/8, for some reason I have always gravitated towards songs with this time signature and that groove at the end where you use this looks effortless. I can hear your influences but your playing is quite unique. I can also say that watching you now from some of your earlier videos, you are getting better and better, you are one of my favorite drummers, and teachers John, keep it up!!!
I just listened to this and to say I was blown away is a *severe* understatement. There are plenty of drummers playing complicated songs on YT. There are many who are covering Tool note for note. But your channel is the only one I have seen where you are playing original music which puts into practice all the theory that Danny utilises. I have seen your video where you break down Rosetta Stoned and it is fascinating just how easily you reel off precisely what Danny is doing, break down the rudiments, and go over how a single rudiment can be used in so many ways. More than being interesting, it gives a real insight into how drummers think when drumming and how seemingly random things are actually carefully thought out. You are far better than some drum teachers I know. I know archaeology probably pays better but the fact remains that if you ever took up drumming full time, other players need to watch out :D Keep it up, kind sir. Here's hoping to see more from you soon :)
Man, it's not just a music, it's a piece of art! Since Carey I don't hear great things like this. Your lines are so creative and innovative. I wonder how much time you spend creating this, maybe a month or two, hehe! You and Ben are doing a great job with Portraits. I'm anxious to buy your album here in Brazil. Keep doing great music, cuz that's what we need in the world.
This is superb, John! Your performance really epitomizes fluency, which is not only achieved by experience, but ingenuity blended together. Keep up the amazing work!
Just found you through your tool covers the other day and was thinking "man this guy needs to work on some original content" then I look at your recent uploads and find this incredible piece of music. Awesome drumming, and im glad I came across it. Instant fan.
I was thinking the same thing. The drums have an overall lateralus album feel. Not to the point of sounding like a copy but similar "polyrythems". I dunno, I'm not a drummer and may have just invented a word. Either way, great stuff!
Holy hell mate your writing skills are on point, I can't wait to pick the album up. Every time I watch one of your videos you inspire me to practice, this song is perfect thanks :)
I'm blown away. The creativity, dynamics, and execution of your drum work is beyond outstanding. I love hearing a little Danny Carey influence, but how you make it your own. And great song, to boot. I'm invested in your Portraits project now.
John... You have awesome feel, great creativity !!! you're actually the kind of drummer i look up to !! with all due respect to great drummers now and in the past ... you are my absolute favorite after this comment !! :D Keep it up man !!
That snare fill in the beginning made me smile. ;) I've long been seeking music featuring drumming in the vein of Carey's style. Thanks for this. I'll be looking for the full length record.
I enjoy your playing in this, and your kit sounds amazing. If you have the time, you should upload 10 minute or so long videos of you just jamming out and improvising. If I ever find myself out in the Colorado, Id love to have the honor of jamming with you.
Holy Jack freaking balls ! Can't wait to get the album, set it as the audio source in my car, set it to repeat and enjoy it for the next 3 months of commuting.
Amazing work. I'm not gonna dissect, and critique this. Does it sound like Danny Carrey? Sure it does. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. I'd love to be compared to him, what a compliment. Anyways, I'm glad I found your channel today, referencing some covers, I'm working on. You're a brilliant drummer, and I'm looking forward to spending many hours, watching, and rewatching, your vids. Keep it up, and keep bringing that original music, it really is incredible.
Hell yeah! Your playing is amazing, creative and extremely awesome to listen to and watch! Your kit sounds amazing and you are just as good as any of your influences (Danny Carey etc) Cant wait for a full album! It will definitely be up there with any Tool album! And Tool is my favorite band! Cant wait! thank you for making these amazing videos of you playing! Very inspiring. Cheers from Redback Recordz New Zealand
This is awesome and can I say everyone complaining about taking ideas and stuff its like come on its awesome everyone steals and adds their spin to what the greats have done thats music it all comes back around love your drumming top notch are you self taught ?
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. If you need a guitarist, I would love to audition for a part in this amazing work. Do you still have a day job? I remembered you used to mention that it's tough to make videos with your demanding day job.
Ah, I've been waiting for this one, and I'm far from disappointed. It'd actually be pretty cool if maybe Benn could do a play through of his guitar work as well, but maybe that's asking too much lol. Anyways, awesome job with the drum work in this. I know it's redundant at this point, but I'm really seeing that Tool'ish influence shine through. I can't wait to hear more
+Devonshire Pee Thanks man, and I would like to see Ben's take on this song too. But yeah, we need to focus on getting the rest of the album mixed and mastered for now...
+craigggo22 That crack is on the 19-inch Paragon china (RIP...my favorite cymbal). I'm now using it as the bottom cymbal in a stacker...still sounds great for that.
Nice work John!! As already stated, the Danny Carey/Tool influences are there, and you still made it your own. I was waiting for a BIG climax/scream a la MJK, but regardless still pretty awesome, man! What are you triggering on your pads? Your top left was obvious as it stood out, but the other two..on first listen, didn't sound like they added anything. It could be my hearing though, I am going to listen again right away and try and listen closer. Regardless, awesome job(again)!! I look forward to more! Keep playing and inspiring, man! :)
+Kennan Gilbert Thanks man, and I agree about the sound of the pads. On the single, they sound much better, but I should have tweaked the sounds a bit more on this drum playthrough. If you follow that link to the deconstruction of the song, I discuss how we recorded samples in the studio and what I'm triggering on the pads.
Congrats man! Great performer and video director. Only one thing if I may argue about your videos: the rear camera should be a little "more rear" and up ;)
i must have watched this video 20 times at least... amazing drumming!! i'm learning some parts of this song. but i have trouble with the double bass. do you have any tips for ''double bass beginners''? PS: it would be amazing if you covered 'Toxicity' by SOAD Greetings from the Netherlands
+Sjaak Trekhaak Thanks for the comment; learning double bass technique for me involved going back to the same basics that I used for my hands: playing singles along with a click, slow to fast, and then rudiments like paradiddles.
Such an amazing song! Can somebody tell me where I can find music from this band so I can download it? John you are an amazing drummer, I really look up to you. Please make more Tool covers!
I was a little skeptical about Portraits. No particular reason, but I hate it when bands/artists just pick a random word and pluralize it for a band name. That being said, this was pretty fucking good. I can't wait to hear the rest man.
every time somebody tells me paradiddles aren't worth practicing i'll link this video to them xD. any hope an european guy can get his hands on the album?
Hey here's my feedback as a big Tool fan : I like the drumming a lot, although maybe you could try to include more ghost notes when you're not playing the toms. Some parts were clearly in the hommage to Danny department (like the little motif played with both hands together as a transition, The Grudge style), but I don't mind it as long as you don't borrow core parts of Tool's tracks. About the music as a whole, I feel the song could have gone into a heavier riff, I was waiting for a climax that never quite came. A lot of cool parts but all written in the same mood, resulting in the song being a bit "monotone", it would have benefited from more contrast I think.
+iopklmification Couldn't agree more honestly. The song itself is cool, but I felt no climax at all throughout the piece. The closest thing to a climax were the parts starting around 4:20. A large part of this song just feels like he's riffing in 7/4 to me.
+iopklmification Hi, thanks for your feedback, and I'm glad you're feeling the vibe overall. As you said, I'm definitely influenced by Danny Carey, but there's no borrowing of any of his riffs. A few folks here in the comments have noted a similarity to The Grudge, such as the build section near the end on the toms. I was definitely influenced by DC here, insomuch as it's a groove on the toms only, with alternating accents between the left and right hands. But it's a different rudiment and a different time signature. Still, I can understand the comparison. Regarding the overall dynamics of the song, maybe give it a few more listens, because that was one of our main goals with the song: insanely contrasting dynamics with a final lifting climax. One important thing to consider is that this is the drum playthrough, so the mix is totally different than that of the single. The drums are very loud in this video so that you can hear the technical aspects of it, but on the single, you get a better balance, and the guitars/vocals really carry you along in places.
+johnkew Though the mood of the song was definitely a bit mellow, I could definitely hear the climax even through the mix. Very impressive drumming through out. Obviously very Danny Carey inspired, which is great to have more drummers like him, and I'm glad you're using your encyclopedic knowledge of Danny Carey's parts to create unique drum tracks for original music. I think you definitely have outdone yourself with the drum parts, especially the climax drum solo at the end. I don't like to compare drummers in regards to who is "better" or anything, but I think compositionally what you wrote is very comparable to the likes of Danny Carey's drum parts. Much respect and I cannot wait to hear more.
Nice! Vocals/guitar remind me a bit of Dream Theater (in a good way), drums certainly have Tool influence. Seeing a lot of "The Grudge" in this one, but with a nice mix of your own style - a few fills really surprised me!
that you are tool influenced is very obvious, but the drumming in this song in particular has a lot of similaritys with the grudge i would say. some parts sound like taken right from it :D but good song
+Zodiacdrummer Nah man, there is no copying of parts here. I was certainly influenced by the theory and concepts behind DCs drumming (e.g., the use of alternating Swiss Army triplets in parts), but the patterns are different. Plus, the Grudge is in 5/4 and 5/8; this song is in 7, 6, and 4, so there's no way to take parts from it.
+Carlos Vera Glad you're liking it! Yeah, there are a lot of changes here. But another song on the album...so many changes.
Well done..
Another true master of the kit. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

Awesome Drummer!
i watch him every day!

Flawless. Just perfect. For sure. U make Dany proud
I can't stop listening to this song. Looking forward to the full album.
Fantastic stuff... I love the buildup to the finale.
Why the hell this video don't have more likes?
MrLittleSam The really good things are in the deep, to be found
But people don't really dig for it... so...

10 minutes wasn't enough. I want more.
Just found you through your tool covers the other day and was thinking "man this guy needs to work on some original content" then I look at your recent uploads and find this incredible piece of music. Awesome drumming, and im glad I came across it. Instant fan.
well done, John (and Ben!) definitely picked up on that 'grudge-like' finale! can't wait for more.
I was thinking the same thing. The drums have an overall lateralus album feel. Not to the point of sounding like a copy but similar "polyrythems". I dunno, I'm not a drummer and may have just invented a word. Either way, great stuff!

beautifully done! can't wait too hear the album!
Danny Carey would be so proud if he heard this, great job!
OUTSTANDING
I loved this SOOOO much I'm legit crying oh my gosh!
that kit sounds excellent
That snare fill in the beginning made me smile. ;) I've long been seeking music featuring drumming in the vein of Carey's style. Thanks for this. I'll be looking for the full length record.
Absolutely amazing!!!
Oh my god, so amazing John!, loving the tom grooves, directly from Tool!.
Amazing. Really impressed by this.
dude. I've been following you for a long time now. this is such a great cover and it's inspiring to see you get way better on the drums.
+Max Stevanus Thanks for sticking around my friend. And this is an original song :-)
i love it, great playing
5:35 gives me chills... So awesome :)

Fucking awesome and incredibly creative... congratulations from a bass player.
Amazing work. Had to buy the single and support!
+Timothy Wolff-Piggott Thanks for the support!
Singer sounds like Elias Soriano sometimes. Great song John.
Dude! Awesome!
fantastic man. Love the sound, and love your Danny Carey influences. Can't wait to buy the album.
great jam man !!!!
Holy shiitt! That ending....
This makes me want to hop on my kit and start playing. this was fucking awesome your an incredible drummer, truly inspiring keep up the great music!
amazing
this is really fucking good

I wonder where you got the idea for the drum part around 8:38 XD sounds similar to a certain "The Grudge" by a band you might like
This is awesome! I can't wait for this album. P.s. Is that your closed hi-hat with the crack in it? I've never noticed that before. Oops
+craigggo22 That crack is on the 19-inch Paragon china (RIP...my favorite cymbal). I'm now using it as the bottom cymbal in a stacker...still sounds great for that.
Shame you guys never released anything new... I really enjoyed the album

Love the snare drum sound ! Wich model ? Any particular post treatment ?
Congrats man! Great performer and video director. Only one thing if I may argue about your videos: the rear camera should be a little "more rear" and up ;)
Cristian Alberti Oh this sounded kinky damn xD
Oh, how envy your skills.
i must have watched this video 20 times at least... amazing drumming!! i'm learning some parts of this song. but i have trouble with the double bass. do you have any tips for ''double bass beginners''?

+manubeckerman Thanks man, and the links to download the song are in the description.
Nice
Any idea when the albums coming out?
I was a little skeptical about Portraits. No particular reason, but I hate it when bands/artists just pick a random word and pluralize it for a band name. That being said, this was pretty fucking good. I can't wait to hear the rest man.
Lol. That isn't what we did.
+lolh4x You see, they took a random plural word so there was no need to pluralize it :)
Whatever you say bro.
every time somebody tells me paradiddles aren't worth practicing i'll link this video to them xD. any hope an european guy can get his hands on the album?
Bring this band to Vegas!

This must be exhausting!
+Nicholas Vladd Haha, it's definitely a workout.
You are truly amazing i hope you see this....you and josh steffen are my fav drummers have you guys ever thought of teaming up for a video??
+inutonmoms Josh is a great drummer; I've never contacted him, but he seems like he'd be fun to work with.
+johnkew that would be fucking awesome
try getting jeans from american eagle..they're really long and don't flood. i wear 28-34's! anyways sick drumming like always bro B)
when you listen to a song and ask yourself afterwards; where did those 10 min go?
+navye48 Yes we're odd birds, releasing a 10-minute single, haha. Glad you're feeling it!
I think that the tom mics are muted because when you play them I only hear the bass and snare :S
Galo Asecas they are mixed lower but they are definitely there mate. Plus John is just incredible in ghost notes
Tool as fuck! Great job!
+ignacy2190 Thanks man, and I'll definitely take that as a compliment!
Please take me in as your student!
For real 24k for this video is an insults. This song is on par with some tool stuff.
that you are tool influenced is very obvious, but the drumming in this song in particular has a lot of similaritys with the grudge i would say.
some parts sound like taken right from it :D
but good song
+Zodiacdrummer Nah man, there is no copying of parts here. My honest opinion, vocalist lacks power in singing, the instrumental is fucking awsome, really loved it. 5:55 amazing, 7:37 WOW man!!
Derivative.
9:20 Kill it!
KI
:’
The Grudge by TOOL much ?
Contrived.
mysticnumber how do you gather that
You guys have some great stuff, but you need a bassist.
Aside from that though, it's some damn good stuff.
Haha this isn't tool! Gay!!
Why the hell this video don't have more likes?
