The album doesn't just 'almost' have a hero's journey. It HAS one. Looking into how the music videos were made, it was literally designed to be the soundtrack to the movie they had made. They went to a very famous Japanese animé director, handed him the album and went 'here you go, wanna make an animé movie for us, with this as the only audio?' He said yes, though it does have some sound effects on it from the film studio as well. But there are no spoken words in the movie, it's ALL told straight through this album, in sequence as it is on the record.
This album was literally written as the hero's journey for a film they hadn't had made yet! The GENIUS to pull that off!♥️👍

Why Random Access Memories is such a cool finale album from Daft Punk is because instead of using samples from released songs like they previously did, they got artists who they previously sampled to play hours of music for them, and sampled through their own recordings

i think thats why i dont enjoy it as much. it feels inauthentic and bland. same issue with Justice - they got enough money and studio access to actually make the stuff they used to sample and it loses the attitude and transgressive vibe that sampling brings. i understand people liking RAM, and what they like about it, but the whole album is pretty much a skip for me.

But I later read somewhere (wrongly) that it was a French sample, and then I couldn't stop hearing it in as "qu'est-ce tu fais là" and "qu'est-ce tu fais", which means "what are you doing there" and "what are you doing". With that said there’s still bands/artists making great albums the great ones always will. The problem I think is us the listeners, I think people just don’t listen to full albums anymore, they listen to songs/playlists it’s not right or wrong but because of this artists focus is making 1 hit song instead of cohesive albums….

      - Dangermouse took an EMI released a capella of Jay-Z's Black Album and remixed it from start to finish with The Beatles White Album. He named the result "The Gray Album".
      - EMI (Jay-Z's label) pulled the a capella from circulation and issues a cease and desist order to Dangermouse adding the threat of a copyright infringement lawsuit despite the fact that Dangermouse distributed The Gray Album for free online profiting on none of it. It was Dangermouse demonstrating what quality sampling is capable of.
      - The internet caught wind of a big label trying to squeeze money from an independent artist and held a mass protests, having major websites display their sites in grayscale, showing solidarity for Dangermouse.
      - Months after the protests and lawsuit threats, EMI released a "collaboration" with Linkin Park + Jay-Z, stealing Dangermouse's initial idea for commercial use.

And i used to be a fan, but if you listen to it, its a stupidly simple formula : obscure disco track+Ableton=daft punk. Literally ANYONE can sample the way they do. It is not mastery. It is 100% hackery. Also I've been a dj for nearly 25 years and i can tell you that most producers and DJs who sample are forgettable and lame. Chemical brothers, juno reactor, praga khan, crystal method and rabbit in the moon are all ten times the artists that dumbass daft punk are. Just cause you like something doesn't mean its difficult. The _whole_ song is them on vocals with a small backbeat.
The beautiful background hiss you hear are the overtones produced when all the “ahhs” are left at a minimal volume through the whole single.
They then literally went next door to the receptionist in their studio and asked her spontaneously to do some talking. She had no idea this was coming.

amazing video! and just want to point out that you are absolutely right about this album having a hero's journey narrative arc. there's a visual companion piece to this album called interstellar 5555 that's has to be mentioned when speaking about this album that shows you the journey that hero goes on. it has no dialogue, and each song from the album is a scene in the film that tells the hero's story. it is absolutely incredible and I highly recommend it to fans of this album. it really drives the whole project home.

Oh man. Oh man, oh man. This is a very special album to me. I was 11 when it was released and remember hearing One more Time on toonami. Then 6 years later, I'm graduating high school, entering college and come across a video that said "I love Daft Punk...but..." then proceeded to show some of the samples. I thought it was so cool, and decided to listen to the actual album since I had only known 3 songs off of it. I listened to that album so much I can't think of 2007 without thinking about Daft Punks discovery.
I then fell down the rabbit hole of people trying to find ALL of the samples and recreate them. I remember everyone trying to figure out Face to face for the longest time, but I never heard someone point out the "Face to face now, face to face with me" like...WHAT lmao.

Its worth mentioning that both “Something About Us” and “Voyager” interpolate elements from Oliver Cheatham’s “Get Down Saturday Night” - a sample that has also found its way into other huge tracks since (Michael Gray’s “The Weekend”, Room 5’s “Make Luv”)
And Thundercat samples Something About Us on “A Fan’s Mail (Tron Song Suite II)”

The Way you broke down DP's Tracks and played them Samples is incredible. As a Man born in the states to Liberian immigrant parents, I didn't even know about Eddie Johns and him being a Liberian. I had to Draw the dial back 3 times just to make sure i heard you say what i thought you said. That's some Satellite vision right there. You made another damn good video. You're a scientist Bro. The making of of Random Access Memory
    - Daft Punk: We need a drummer for that track.
    - John “JR” Robinson enters in the studio: I can play
    - DP: Great just hit the snare drum once
    - JR: ???? Just one shot, like that? 🎵
    - DP: Not exactly the sound we want, do it again please.
    And again.
    And again.
…. After 1 hour hitting the drum in exactly the same way (at least for any normal human ears)
    - DP: That’s it! That’s exactly the sound we want for this particular beat. Now we can sample it. Thanks JR

There are so many "microchops" of various other songs from the same era that weren't discovered until recently.
