I think the helmets are a good idea, if I did commercial rock or pop music I would likely do same because I don't want the fame bug, no privacy and no free time, I want music bug, so people can't see you so are intrigued by music rather than being over intrigued by person/celebrity image, I think it would be cool, you get to be cool and anonymous on stage and mr low profile off stage, good idea

They nearly went bankrupt because they financed "Interstellar 5555" with their own money and hired legendary animation artists Daisuke Nishio and Hirotoshi Rissen. Its not cheap to make an animated movie and it apparently didn't make much money. I think its one of the reasons why they had to slow down releasing albums or why they chose to release human after all.

    • @ericbazinga

They even brought legendary director Leiji Matsumoto for Interstella 5555 (fun fact: Matsumoto is their childhood hero; they used to grow up watching one of Matsumoto's shows, _Space Pirate Captain Harlock._ They had been honored to be able to work with Matsumoto on an animated feature.)

anthony patterson - When a Music Label gives an advance to record an album, that’s actually a loan. What’s funny also besides paying to record your music and film a music video. The artists don’t even own their Masters. That’s how scums from Music Labels rip out artists. Daft Punk was smart to sign with Virgin records which allowed them to own their masters.

When you've got an endless stream of same-y popstars, who all sound and look the same, having just two dudes come out in crazy looking helmets really lets them stand out. At that point their music only has to be average for them to become popular, because at that point you go to their concerts and shows just to see what they'll do next.

    • @Cynsham

Their music has always been a meshing of time periods and genres of music, and the robot suits and personas are just another part of that. The contrast between their technological/nonhuman/futuristic robot outfits and sounds of synths, drum machines, and vocoders mixed with the analog/human/nostalgic samples from 70s and 80s disco/funk/etc. tracks and their usage of real keyboards/guitars/bass has always been some of the defining characteristics of Daft Punk's sound.
