    I own both Stanley cook pot and Zebra billy (10cm) and these are some of the best common sense mods I have seen to date. Good job.

    You are very creative, I love your ideas. I am also surprised by how similar our Stanley "complete" cook sets are. They say great minds think alike so I guess we have great minds, lol

      Thanks for your positive feedback. It's over three years since I made this video and I've refined both stoves and the Zebra bail arm so it locks the lid when vertical, ie no need for the melting plastic clips for anyone who does my mod and gets rid of the original bail arm. With this simple mod, you don't spill too much, if I'm carrying water from a stream on rough terrain, or if the billy gets accidentally knocked over if I keep the bail arm vertical holding the lid in place. I may re-shoot an updated version. Plus I've got better cameras to shoot HD video.
      I found a stainless steel kitchen storage cannister in a supermarket that looked about the right diameter to take the Stanley, I bought thinking, if it does, great, if not I'll use it to store stuff in the kitchen.
      Got it home and it fitted like a glove leaving a slight gap, drill out and snip away and I have a rustproof base with three hangars for the pot Trangia stove style. I'm just looking for a bit of mesh for the wood fire grate at the base to allow airflow underneath. Recycling one from a disposable BBQ should work for that.

    Brilliantly put together kit...also you have shown me some new ideas...especially the s-curve spoon. I don't own A Zebra yet but one day, and my kit will be complete...just ask my wife, she knows how bad I want one...lol. But I do have the Stanley Adventure...I love it so much that I've sent one around the world...well, it's on its journey now. And one day it will make it's way across the great pond to our Brothers and Sisters on that side of the Sticks...I do hope to see smiles across the planet sharing one pot to eat a meal prepared in...lol. On my channel I have a playlist called S.W.W.A.T that has the Stanley's travel so far. I have subbed to you because you have put a lot of thought into your kit and that means you've got ideas...lol.

      +ManLand (Midnight121) Thanks for the positive feedback and I'll check your channel out.
      The s-curve spoon was a long handled version which I bent to suit, bought cheaply in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia along with the Zebra Billy from a general store in readiness for a rain forest solo trip, sleeping under the lightweight poncho in the video above, on a hammock I'd picked up on a street market in Krabi, Thailand. I'd remembered a similar shorter spoon from my childhood, that my Grandma had that came with a honey/jam pot and nicked the idea, so I can't claim all the credit. ;-)
      I'll be uploading a video on how I would have set up my shelter on a beach and secured it on sand whilst I was on holiday in Cornwall. Unfortunately foul weather set in for 3 days at the end of the holiday and didn't go for the overnighter. The video also includes some new mods on the Zebra which will be useful if you want an arm that does the same thing as the plastic clips on the current versions, plus a way of making a clip in side handle and other gear mods and tips.

    What a clever use of the syringe to measure out your fuel!

    • @blackboardbloke
      @blackboardbloke  6 лет назад

      Thanks, although how available a non-sharp syringe is, I don't know. It was from a computer printer cartridge ink refill kit that I had lying about. I kept the metal tube as it gives extra reach into the fuel bottle when it's getting low and the tube fits down the side of the plunger inside the syringe when not in use. Although it's a blunt ended tube, it could still do damage if fallen or sat on for example, so best to keep it out of the way when not in use.
      Initially I wanted it for the Trangia burner when I only wanted a single mug of tea or coffee, but as I've made other burners with no screw top to contain fuel, then it's even more important to stop fuel wastage. Just under a full syringe of the fuel we use in the UK is enough to boil water for a mug, and it will burn out a few seconds after that.

      No longer have it, but it was a boiled sweet tin from Lidl. Now I use a modified stainless steel kitchen storage canister that was about £2 which is tougher and doesn't rust. Very successful walking on the Cornish coastal path last summer where I bivvied under a poncho on beaches mostly. I also made a lighter spirit burner out of two pop cans to go in it.
      The Zebra's stove is still going strong after about 8 years. I use the Stanley pot daily as my kettle and the Zebra when I'm cooking rice or pasta as they both work on an induction hob.
