- Stanley cook pot review and upgrades DIY. Video for a "how to" on the monster stove. • Simple DIY center fire... the total weight of this kit with a full fuel bottle (without the knife) is 18.2 OZ
That is an excellent can stove adaptation! I also really like the alcohol stove and and the koozie and handle. All really good ideas. Thanks for the link!
Thanks for the encouragement brother
Man, you're the original hobo stove innovator. Cheers brother.
Your crack me up brother. They have been making these since before the 1920s but it is really good to hear from you. I hope everything is going good for you and your family
Great ideas on the mods/hacks!!! I just a Stanley so I'm watching all the videos I can to see which are worth doing. You have some of the best so far. Thanks for sharing the ideas.
Thank you very much. If you want to use some of the ideas I am pretty sure I used a large baked beans can. I carried my pot into the grocery store and looked for a can that would fit. The bonus was gassing out my co-workers the next day, lol.
Great idea, I have the cook pot and the large can.. just need a dremel now lol
Side note: This kit fits perfectly in a condor style h20 pouch. Makes a great little cook kit that is separated from the rest of your gear so it doesn't get dirty with ash, and I keep a fork and spoon in with the cookset and then a small bottle of soap and a lighter/tinder in the front pocket of the pouch
Sounds like a nice set up you made. Thanks for watching and the kind words
Well done. I think I'll give this a shot to compliment my Stanley.
Rob N. Thank you brother. We had a "freak" snow storm here in Georgia (this state can't handle a 1/2" of snow) and my electricity has been out for 3 days. I've been using the set up in this video in my kitchen to keep a hot cup of coffee in my hand. Thanks for watching
Great ingenuity! So many reviews have UNUSED equipment that they "review" (for the new looks, for the first time), so it is good to see a review that is tarnished and flame stained... AKA, actually USED!
+Survival Citizen now this is a great comment. I agree 100% how can you be reviewing something and the sticker is still on the side? If you call it an un-boxing I'm ok with that or if you un-box it and show its first use and your thoughts on its performance I'm good with that too. I want to see an old beat up piece of equiptment or even something that has been well cared for and cleaned but not something with the tags on it, lol.
Why not just say "I'm in my parents basement showing you something my mommy just bought me cuz I thought it looked cool and now I'm going to put it on a shelf for the rest of its life" oh, sorry... End rant. Bwahahaha
Survival Citizen how have I not replied to this? im sorry I didnt notice your comment somehow. thank you for the kind words and I agree that a good review is very different than an unboxing. I dont mind seeing a new item but if you review it you should use it (or one like it) and tell of your experience
Survival Citizen ha! I just saw that I did reply, lol. im on a phone and the layout is not what I am used to
That bean can stove is absolutely genius!
+EDC Adventures thank you brother and I sub'd you back
Sweet! thank you!
I really like your stove/windscreen. This will probably be my next project. This will enable me to use the pot while ice fishing.
Keep em coming. They are appreciated!
Thanks, I never ice fished (I live in the south) but I hope it works for you
Great video and I particularly like the notching modification put in with a needle file or Dremel to make a hanger for over an open fire which I'm now going to do on my Stanley.
I built something very similar for mine but I didn't have a can as tall as yours so I made a removable base chilli can stove (burn wood with it in, Trangia with it out) and added a candy tin base to make the most of it as a windshield which also is a snug fit inside the main can for storage and slots on the Stanley pot. The Trangia burner goes in the candy tin base with the base removed or left in for burning wood or solid fuel tablets. The candy tin base then serves as a heat shield to prevent the ground scorching and collects any burning ash that drops down.
It was my second design for the Stanley and I made the removable base with louvres/flaps designed to get the rising air to swirl in a vortex for a more efficient full burn to minimise sooting. +John "survivor johnny" Tewelow's video on the hobo stove gave me the idea and it works well..
I'm goin over to your channel and have a look around. The swirl bottom stove is my design from the InovativeSollutions channel. Thanks for watching both of em and I take your comments as a compliment so thanks for that as well
Ha! I'm already subbed to your channel and I love your designs
Great kit. Lots of good ideas in use.
Thanks brother. You know how satisfying it can be to make your own gear. Thanks again
That's a great idea. I think I'm gonna get one of those stanley cooking pots. Thanks my friend for the video.
Thanks again brother but you better get 2 or the Eagle-ette will wind up with yours, lol
I'm surprised that you haven't gotten any comments yet.
Nice posting. I liked the notch mod. The can stove setup was clever also
Thanks, It was as compact as I could figure out and still cover wood/liquid fuel. As to the notch, I have seen people add bail handles but I wanted something more simple. Again, thanks for the comment
david dansereau I hadn't really even thought of selling them. I was hoping to give the info for people to do a DIY. If you want to try to build one I can give you my email or phone number in a PM and walk you through it. I'd be glad to help
Sand off the rust and spray paint it with heat resistant paint ...looks nice good job man
Thanks for the encouragement, I have a few kits I made videos on but this one is probably my favorite
Oh no you didn't...you just did not say that you threw those 2 green cups away!?!...I watched your video...and I was ultimately impressed...especially how two simple notches cut just right will solve the problem of hanging this pot "The Stanley Adventure Camp Cook Set" above a fire...I love my Stanley...even have it set up to send around the world....yep. I watched your video and was even ultimately impressed because I love Tin Cans and Tin Can Cooking...I worship "pardon the use of the word worship" Hobo Stove....I am a cook...and that is what MY CHANNEL is centered around...I sir, saw your video and just fell in love with it...with it all sir...until...you spoke against those wonderful green cups. I know they may seem to be a bit on the heavy side for those out there concerned about weight in their ultra lite backpacking...I fault them not...but to cut a tag off a tea bag because it adds to the weight is a bit much...Those cups are brilliant...they work better than any coffee cup I've ever owned...BUT I don't fault you dear sir...YOU are BRILLIANT!!!...You just are not a member of our "Green Cup Club"...a club started to show support for those wonderful cups...If you watch my channel...it will explain who I am...I am different to be sure...I give you a thumbs up on this video...but to speak against those cups dear sir...you sir are anti green cup!...lol. Seriously I did enjoy this video...and seriously I do love those cups...and I subscribed just because you love the Stanley...and a good ole fashioned TIN CAN... lol
To be honest I can't throw anything away. Thank you for your kind words
This is the "notch" video. I will have to do a video of the cups to put your mind at ease that I still have have them. I do agree that they are about the best coffee cups you can get and since I drink coffee 24/7 (even when I sleep and shower, lol) they have a lot of value. Even if they are heavy as lead
John Tewelow They sure are a bit on the weighty side but a stiff cup beats the tip over effect most of the time...lol. Yeah I'd like to see those cups in action to be sure...lol. That would make a fun video!...
genius set-up, love the hobo stove. awesome vid.
gman3215 thank you very much and thanks for watching
Great video love that compact little wood stove. going to have to put that on my to do list. One of the place I like to go around here for overnights only allow contained fire and no building of fire pits. Thanks for sharing love that alcohol stove to very cool. atb John
Thanks brother, I'm glad to give you something back. After all it was your video that upped my game on my wool blanket and you teach is all a lot. Thanks brother
I did a How To video on the alc stove that shows how to make it and how it works as a center fire and side jet
I will have to check that out to. Sharing is what its all about thanks
Nice little video. I found you via HighCarbonSteelLove's channel shout out. Great idea on both the wood burner and alcohol stoves. Thanks for sharing.
Dave is a great guy. I like his informative videos too
Very impressed! Thanks for sharing!
Stllno thank you very much
i have that cook pot and a Trangia stove im going to make one, Great set up
+Alan Hoyt thanks Alan. Except for the pot most of the rest of it is made from stuff out of the trash so it fits your "budget theme"
Nice. Very nice. Innovative, functional, an inexpensive. I have the Stanly cookpot, but I also have two alcohol stoves, so I doubt I'll make another. But it's the wood burning aspect that I want.
thank you for the kind words. this wood stove should work as a windscreen/pot stand for the alc stoves you already have as well.
This is AWESOME!!! Thank you for sharing! I subscribed!😊
Thank you very much. It was a fun build and it's pretty useful
Very Nice, I’m for sure going to try that.
I thank you, I take that as a compliment
nice set up on the stanley cook kit
thanks brother, it was a fun project and its kinda become my go to due to its size. thanks again
That is a great set up.
Monica Jones thank you very much
Interesting video.
I love the tabs you cut into your stanley cup. I am 100% doing the same to mine if i can get my hands on something that can cut the metal without butchering it.
I'm going to try and make a variant of your setup. Have you attempted to make a setup similar to this where the stove is sitting on the ground instead of within the can? that way you could have the option to refill and relight the stove without as much of a headache
wow I just saw this comment it's been hidden from me I guess in spam until until RUclips studio just released it. I have never changed this original design to make a different one however this Stanley cup can also be just used in a campfire on the ground if that's an option. since this comment is so old I'm sure by now you have already made your kit and I'm sure glad I could be an inspiration thanks for watching.
No, no, no, you're doing it all wrong. You're supposed to spend $100 on something off the shelf that has half of the functionality.
JK. Good job!
+Gabesafish Bwahaha, I like your style. Great comment (with a great point) thank you
+Gabesafish oops, I forgot... Happy New Year
Gabesafish HE CAN GET 1 FROM BLACK SCOUT SERVIVAL FOR ABOUT 400$.
Gabesafish damnnnn 😁🤘
that's a cool lil setup
+MCKwilly thanks brother and thanks for watching
Excellent video
That's very kind, thank you
@Terrell Dozier I will look for my wife's postal scale and post the weight ASAP. Thanks for watching
Stoves are genius, thanks.
Bo Nibbly thank you very much
Thank you
Sure John, I have a Ikea hobo and $50 dollar Firebox but I hadn't seen the cuts you put in that hobo before. Interesting!
Bo Nibbly I dont think they are original ideas just maybe a different tale or a twist on what others are doing. I have the small 5 piece stove too bit I not sire of the brand. its for wood and a triangia stove. I like that one for its small stored size. it fits in the side pocket on my water bottle pouch
There are as many stoves and ideas about stoves as there are adventures waiting to be had. Been looking at stoves on YT for awhile, always new content. I'm disabled, can't walk any distance, but I can ride a bike. So, my adventures are similar, and different. Weight isn't as big of a deal. Oh, I use the trangia and a few other improvised.
That's awesome, gotta try that.
+05Rudey thank you very much. Let me know if i can help and post a link here for me if you do a video. Thanks again and happy Thanksgiving
@Terrel, sorry it took so long to find a scale. Without the knife I made and with a full fuel bottle it weighs 18.2 oz
Great video! Can you please show us how you made those noches so the pot can be hung over the fire. Thank you
Thanks. I'm sorry that I didn't focus on the notched very well. I'll try to post a vid before long and post you a link to this comment so you get a notification. It's pretty simple tho and could be done with just a file if you don't have a Dremel tool. Half way down those tabs (dead in the middle of each side) file a notch the same diameter as the handle but a bit deeper so it doesn't slip out too easily
@@survivorjohnny44 thank you for your prompt reply and directions ...wonder why the Stanley guy never thought of that :)
FireTorch! 👍😉😎
😎👍😁
Great idea!
Thank you brother
Great job!!!
stewboywsr thank you very much
Your welcome
I wished you had shown a close up of the holes by the handle looked and placed.
I'm sorry brother, maybe I can do a follow up video. I just put a notch 1/2 way down the inside on both sides. The notch should be just big enough for the handle bars so maybe 1/8"X11/8" or so
What is the total weight with 6oz fuel and stove?
not bad sir, but to be honest you just recreated a cheap version of the old swiss volcano cooking set,
100mm tube of justice thanks, I'll take that as a compliment. I have another version in my vid library that I made for Nathan 4071 that's more thought out and a little bigger. It's also made of stainless steel. Thanks for watching
Nice!
BCUSA is such a great place to learn from each other. Thanks for comming by
+John Tewelow How much do you charge to make one of those stoves? I would really like one. Great video.
I just saw this comment because RUclips had put it into spam. I don't think I've ever made one for sale so I don't know what I would charge but you could do a follow along with the video to build one yourself
Ok. I burned wood in my hobo stove with my Stanley pot this weekend. Boiled water really fast. Loved it!!! Question: Everything that touched the pot turned black after that...especially my hands. Do you have a secret way to deal with the soot it collects???
In the woods I use dirt to get the soot off but dish liquid does a great job. You can wrap a bandana around it or use gloves to keep the mess to a minimum before you clean it
Side note- I never really clean mine more than just wipes off. I could be wrong but I feel like a blackened pot heats up better. I could be crazy tho, lol.
If you rub a layer of bar soap on the pot before you use it, it will wash right off.
I expected the can to be the other way up, the stanley sitting on the plate you made...
Its all about air flow and Ash/hot coal containment. The air is sucked in thru the elevated floor and they the holes to feed the fire and the heat is directed up to the pot and then surrounds it for maximum heat transfer. What you are suggesting would be good for a grill top though
@@survivorjohnny44 Just as an experiment maybe,
Two runs with the trangia/Alcohol burner, one each way and see which boils quicker?
I'd do it myself but I only saw this today and don't have a large tin to hand lol :-)
Don't forget to cool the stanley with cold water before the second run for consistency :-p
@@OldNavajoTricks forgetting to cool the pot put a smirk on my face 😁. Maybe I can find time after the holidays. I do have a nice trangia. It's one of the newer light weight versions. I also have the original WWII heavy stamped steel (came with the Swedish GI cook set) kind bit it's on its last legs
@@survivorjohnny44 I look forward to the burnoff challenge video lol,
Have a great holiday Pal and I'll see you soon!
nice
KING JAMEZ thank you, very kind of you to say
Why are you on the floor?
Lol, you seem to be the only person who noticed that. It was a video I shot for a friend (across the country) to see how it all went together. It was at about 5:30 in the morning (still dark outside) at the office of the company I worked for and I was trying to hurry before anyone else showed up for work. If I remember right a lady that worked in the office showed up as I was finishing up the video
@@survivorjohnny44 lol. I thought you were pranking us. Thanks for the vid. Love the Stanley cookset.
@@praktika1082 thank you. It was my favorite kit for a long time
what did you use to cut those nice tabs into your can?
+Brian Olsen I used a dremel tool and cutting wheel. I used a sharpie to draw what I wanted and cut it on the lines I made. It's about 2 or 3 years old now and still going strong so it's worth making it and having it around. Thanks for watching and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask
+John “survivor johnny” Tewelow not sure I can find that can size (sad I'm allergic to beans but anyways).
+Brian Olsen when looking for cans just stay away from acid fruit cans (like pineapple) the inside of those cans looks different and I'm not sure if they have some sort of galvanized coating. Galvanized metal pits off sianide gas when it's burned or welded
+John “survivor johnny” Tewelow easy question: what's the diameter of that can? at least I can match it up to something using that. thx!
+Brian Olsen I will try to measure it for you tomorrow if I remember, lol. I have a 6 yr old and 10 month old that run me to ragged. It's the largest Bush Beans can that Kroger had. Buy the beans and let the neighbor's dog eat 'em and keep the can.... Bwahaha just kidding but it would be funny. If you shoot me a PM I'll give you my phone number and you can call me so we can work out the sizes and details (if you want)
once your alcohol stove is in the big can...what have you found is the best way to light it?
Striking a ferro rod thru the hole in the top of the can or I sometimes cheat and use a bic thru the side hole but you have to tilt the can for that. I always put fiberglass insulation in my alc stoves so they can't spill. I have a how to video on making the alc stove but it was one of the first videos I made on this channel so it's way down at the bottom
Oops, thanks for watching. I almost forgot to say that
John Tewelow, thanks for the quick reply. This dual-use thing is one of the best thing on the inter-web! Hey, it the elevated base of this made from the lid?
Yes or you can use something called "hardware cloth" with 1/2" squares. Later models I have made I use the hardware clothe since it doesn't hold the ash and fill up. It's like a thick screen with 1/2" squares. Here is a link to a later version (1/4" hardware cloth elevated floor)
ruclips.net/video/KSmBNQ1LvSw/видео.html
I already have a few cat can stoves. Do you still recommend the Monster Energy Jet Stove... or have you discovered something better recently?
i think its a crime to throw away good cups (i admit i havent used mine yet) but thos cups could come in handy
lol, its funny that you say that. Manland blasted me for not using them and we became friends over it. I still have them and I will now admit that they are about the best coffee cups there are. I dont have room for them since I added the alc stove set up tho
WTF ? MAKE ME ONE OF THOSE
nev bailey bwahahaha, thanks for the smile
Gotta love repurposing.
You have that right. Instead of recycle... upcycle
