I am brazilian, living in Japan and learning japanese by your books and I can say they are the best cuz all the books to learn japanese in portuguese they suck, so hard to understand and learn. Thank you so much
I am so incredibly grateful for your videos George :) I'm planning on going to Japan next year (first time) and you're really keeping up my motivation to study, please don't ever stop!
I think I learned あまり from Pimsleur's haha I never even heard あんまり for a long time and I've only just heard of あんま now but it sounds the coolest and よく使う
So many interesting things packed in one video. I really like the Shiori section, always interested in learning what Japanese in different regions sounds like and getting some background information. Also like your voice impressions of certain viewers ;)
Yes. Shiori is an amazing edition. I asked her to free flow what she was thinking... and she does it PERFECTLY. The worst thing is when people research before they answer and repeat what is on the internet. She has been so good at actually answering the question without over thinking it. And she NAILED this answer!
Oh shit. LOL. You know what. I think you are right. It turns out both versions are 良く but often is written in kana alone よく. Shit. Ok will I will reshoot this one.
I was confused as well. Glad someone noticed too. I checked the comments when any other translation app (imiwa, google...) would tell me 翌 means next ^^'
Hi George, When you were talking about how your wife's mother didn't want you to marry her daughter, is she proud of you both now that you've had such great success with the japanese from zero community and books?
I'm not sure if she completely appreciates our success, but when I talk to her, although rarely, I know she is aware that her daughter is happy and successful. Her son is divorced and generally a mess, so when she compares me to him I'm sure she knows her daughter did well.
It seems like amari came first, then people lengthened it to anmari, and then people shortened that to anma (which would explain why anma is the most informal).
He said that 翌 [よく] means "well", which seems a mistake. According to my dictionary, 翌 means "the following, next", and 良く [よく] means both "well" and "often". The video is still super useful.
The JLPT Vocabulary that I look at in StickyKanji (flashcards basically) calls it "amari" and I thought to myself... "...do they mean 'anmari?'" I guess I've been "Georgi-fied..."
looking at a dictionary amari has a kanji meaning the rest or the balance anmari is written in hiragana although at the end of the description amari in italics (colloq). If your amari has kanji it is not what George is talking ab out
Anmari is the one in my head not only because of George but also the Original urusei yatsura op lol. I think anmari sounds so much nicer than amari too
I love Japanese. Very similar to English compared to the other Asian languages, people ask me questions like this all the time about English and I give the same reactions "im not too sure"
Here's something ive always been confused about in english, and thats like in the あんまりとうきょにいきません. In english you can say "I didn't do nothing" and mean "i didn't do it" kinda. In swedish we don't do that kind of thing, so あんまりとうきょにいきません in my mind would mean "I rarely don't go to Tokyo" so I would believe that you do go to Tokyo often. What would happen if you say あんまりとうきょにいきます, would that be wierd or simply wrong?
あまり/あんまり when used to mean "not often" are NEVER used with positive conjugations. It must be used with negative. And it always means "I do not do often". So yes, it is simply wrong.
Sensei. So I was reviewing the videos before moving on to course three. And I was thinking, is DEKITA the informal past-tense of DEKIRU? Arigatou gozaimas.
what if i mix amari with positive sentence and yoku with negative ? like yoku tokyo ni ikimasen ? its still gonna be - dont go to tokyo very often ? or i dont go well to tokyo ?
The Kanji wouldn't change but mostly Japanese don't use the 漢字 for this. Because the word also means "leftover" or "remainer". The kanji is 余り. When I first read your question I had to even think if there was a kanji for it since it I think I have only ever seen it in hiragana.
by the way i was wondering if there were any way to get your books in morocco because the law in here doesn't allow people to buy stuff from the internet in dollar or euro?
same problem we are not allowed to pay on the net with a foreign money any way i think i am gonna be waiting for videos and sorry for asking so much questions thank you
The Shiori section caused a delay in release because I was waiting for Shiori's response. Then even though I had the response I hadn't edited the subtitles. Her small section has 48 subtitles and takes more time than you would think to add them. So I put up easier to release videos.
I can't quite tell the word order here but I will try, In this case is putting the yoku in front of the verb ok or is it better at that beginning? タランプは ばか の こと が よく いいます。
トランプさんは ばかな ことを よく いいます。 ばか is a な adjective, and you need を to mark the things you say UNLESS you are quoting someone in which case と would be used. This is coming up in course 3.
10:53 doesn't it means I don't usually don't buy pokimon balls?? It's like the same meaning of I do usually buy them?? I'm just asking forgive me if I'm wrong Edit:well I think it might actually means. I don't buy pokimon balls not often??
あんがい mean "Unexpectedly or surprisingly" あまり mean "not often or not very or not much (with negative sentence)" Did you not watch the video? ビデオが見ていませんか?
どなたかも書いているかもしれないけど「翌」って the next じゃありませんか? 「翌日」the next day、「翌年」the next year など。 この場合の「よく」は副詞なので多分漢字の語幹のあとに「く」の送り仮名がついているのもと思われます。 ちょっと調べた限りでは「○く」の○に相当する漢字が見当たりませんでした。 言葉足らずですみません。
George, I love you, brother. This was awesome. So, my weird personal thing: my favorite sound is hearing two Japanese girls speak quietly to one another. It triggers my ASMR shit. It really blisses me out! Shiori is the same way. Damn, I could listen to her voice all day and it wouldn't matter if I didn't understand a single word. It's so relaxing. Plus, I learn something. Dude, have her on more!! Thanks for a great lesson.
ummm, George... at about 7 minutes into the video you refer to (as I understood it) your wife as OKUSAN. I thought that's a way to talk about someone else's wife, and TSUMA is used to speak of one's own wife. Do I have it confused, or are you just enjoying mean sadistic laughter to yourself knowing we're researching the crap out of this coz we got confused? XD Keep up the great work, luv your stuff!
Thanks, did that. I hate how 'tube mixes the order of these videos for me. I learnt the family chart a couple years back, and it was really authorative about how these relations are. George makes a good point on why they get used criss-cross. But I'll stick to the way I learnt earlier (hoping I'm understood)....
I talked about this somewhere in a video more than once I think. One day I thought "OH NO I HAVE USED THIS WRONG FOREVER" and then I asked my Japanese friends and they said "NOPE, MANY PEOPLE USE THIS". There are approximately over 9000!!!!!!! ways to say "wife" in Japanese.
よく In that case means properly, or well as in "I don't understand well" in a literal sense. Another example of that usage would be よく聞いてください "Please listen well"
Learn Japanese From Zero! I watched the whole video. But, for some reason, I still got confused. I wasn't able to make the connection, even though it appears so simple now. (I feel stupid!) I always watch the whole video before commenting, and I am also watching everything in order. I don't want to be one of those people you complain about at the start of your videos!! :-D
LOL. What part do you think is making it not make sense? YOKU + Positive = Do often. AMARI + Negative = Don't do often. That is really the entire point.
Sorry i just watched your video. And i want to say that, about the yoku dekimashita or yoku yatta.. don't say it when to people when they are not little kids anymore. Its kind a awkward. If you want to praise them, just say sugoi desu.. Just avoid the phrase if you can. But when you're teaching little kids, its okay to say it to them
Power up your Japanese on FromZero.com (lessons, quizzes, games, ask-a-teacher)
Hahaha loved the musical ending!!! It's very good to see you happy, 先生!!! Thank you again for the lesson, excellent as always
15:25 Georgeさん you are my favorite. 大好き. I was in tears man
I’m so happy you explained the two よく‘s! So many times the teacher said “よくできました!” and I thought she meant “you did it often!” I was so confused.
😆 頑張っていますね
I am brazilian, living in Japan and learning japanese by your books and I can say they are the best cuz all the books to learn japanese in portuguese they suck, so hard to understand and learn. Thank you so much
love your personal stories being incorporated into examples to elaborate on concepts :D
I am so incredibly grateful for your videos George :) I'm planning on going to Japan next year (first time) and you're really keeping up my motivation to study, please don't ever stop!
日本に行きましたか?
I giggled so hard at the ending! Loved it!
Didn't expect that ending ... Loved it!
I wanted to hear the rest of that story!
I think I learned あまり from Pimsleur's haha
I never even heard あんまり for a long time and I've only just heard of あんま now but it sounds the coolest and よく使う
From the start to this episode, you have grown so beautifully familiar with many people :)
I'm sure you have served them well...I'm following you :)
So many interesting things packed in one video.
I really like the Shiori section, always interested in learning what Japanese in different regions sounds like and getting some background information.

Laughed so hard at the end of the video
What's the song you were going all out to?
ジョージ先生、すみません、in my dictionary 翌 is translated as 'next or following' while 良く is translated as both 'often' and 'well'. Is there a mistake?
Oh shit. LOL. You know what. I think you are right. It turns out both versions are 良く but often is written in kana alone よく. Shit. Ok will I will reshoot this one.
still waiting lol
I was confused as well. Glad someone noticed too. I checked the comments when any other translation app (imiwa, google...) would tell me 翌 means next ^^'
Good thing I always read comments after a video. I wouldn't have noticed this until learning the actual kanji for "Next" :P
@@japanesefromzero So.. did you reshoot these because it can misguide lots of people >__
Hi George, When you were talking about how your wife's mother didn't want you to marry her daughter, is she proud of you both now that you've had such great success with the japanese from zero community and books?

It seems like amari came first, then people lengthened it to anmari, and then people shortened that to anma (which would explain why anma is the most informal).
I just checked, and 余り can be read as both あまり and あんまり, but jisho does list あまり as the common reading (and doesn't even mention あんまり).
He said that 翌 [よく] means "well", which seems a mistake. According to my dictionary, 翌 means "the following, next", and 良く [よく] means both "well" and "often". The video is still super useful.

I am learning Japanese from Minna no Nihongo :) but your videos help me so much !!! T_T
this was pretty helpful man, thank you!
I get the feeling George is really into things so much that they’re probably secrets
汐里さんはかわいいですよ。 Especially the way she enunciated 「あんまり」at 4:12 . That was funny and cute at the same time.
11:25 I always thought 翌 means 'the following' as in 翌年 or 翌朝.
Ok, あまり + negative = don't often~
Could you also use よく (often) with a negative? Perhaps to make "often don't"?
Or is this like なにも・なんでも?
Or is this like なにも・なんでも?
Can you explain me please? Onegai :(
12:38 合格 is the other stamp. And there's a なおしてください stamp that means "Fix Me", and is stamped with blue ink.
Thank you a lot Sensei, you made my japanese better🙏🏻😭
Another good one, thanks!
Georgeさんが よく わかります。そして よく わかります
"sometimes we say come when we're not really coming" soo..you're faking it? 😂😂😂
XD
いく!いく!!!🤣🤣
I love Japanese. Very similar to English compared to the other Asian languages, people ask me questions like this all the time about English and I give the same reactions "im not too sure"
I cried at the bonus scene 😂😂😂
you were right when I first started watching these videos, when a sentence is all in hiragana it is difficult to read it.
And now? ;)
Once again, thank you!
Sensei, did your wife's mother think you were rude for being so upfront with her? Does the mother like you now?
Tips for life
Here's something ive always been confused about in english, and thats like in the あんまりとうきょにいきません. In english you can say "I didn't do nothing" and mean "i didn't do it" kinda. Well, to be fair, the English in this example is also wrong but it doesn’t stop people from saying it.
What’s the name of that song at the end. Does anyone know.
I often heard よくわかない、so this mean: "I am very much (well) doesn't know about it" correct?
教えてくれてありがとう先生
My husband made same promise to my Mom😭 (except I am not a Japanese. I wish I could go to Japan every year tho lol(
Brazil mentioned !!
what's the name of the band and the songtitle? oO that sounded awesome!
They are a LONG dead indy band called ANTI-ELEMENT and the song was OPEN MIND.
I'll check it out ^^ thank you
Is it on YT? I cannot find them :c
I can't find it either O_O
Anyone knows where we can find their songs?
Anybody ever find this song? o.o
Sick song at the end of the video!

Greetings from Brazil
Olá BR, que bom te ver por aqui! =)
Azor Ahai Bom te ver Também.
Um abraço :)
If I wanted to say something like this is my first time coming to Japan could I say :" これは初めて東京に来る事ですよ。" ? (adding よ just for more 感じ ^^
Lol. That ending hahahah
how about the kanji for amari or anmari does it change ?

Hmmm I don't know how to buy it in Morocco. Have you tried www.bookdepository.com?
same problem we are not allowed to pay on the net with a foreign money any way i think i am gonna be waiting for videos and sorry for asking so much questions thank you
My wife often comes back to Japan.
My wife often goes to Japan.

What happened to these videos for the past week?

Learn Japanese From Zero! Thanks for clearing that up.
Making subtitles is hell.
good ending.
I wanna know the name of that song at the end. その曲の名前を知りたい
The song is called "Open Mind" by アンチエレメント
I can't quite tell the word order here but I will try, In this case is putting the yoku in front of the verb ok or is it better at that beginning?

10:53 doesn't it means I don't usually don't buy pokimon balls??
It's like the same meaning of I do usually buy them??
I'm just asking forgive me if I'm wrong
Edit:well I think it might actually means.
I don't buy pokimon balls not often??
i always thought あまり is "actually" in english .. please correct me if im wrong
あんがい is actually
あんがい mean "Unexpectedly or surprisingly"
あまり mean "not often or not very or not much (with negative sentence)" Did you not watch the video?
ビデオが見ていませんか?
What's the function of niwa?
My airplane crashed? x''D that escalated quickly
Love the shirt George Senseisan
BAND NAME?
ジョージさんもめたるがすきですか? よかった ^^
どなたかも書いているかもしれないけど「翌」って the next じゃありませんか?
「翌日」the next day、「翌年」the next year など。
この場合の「よく」は副詞なので多分漢字の語幹のあとに「く」の送り仮名がついているのもと思われます。
ちょっと調べた限りでは「○く」の○に相当する漢字が見当たりませんでした。

Hi, does anybody know what song/band this is?
Please George かけますand かきますboth are creating a major different sense...
😎🤘 metal が大好きです
Hey George, why does it seem like あまり and かえりません used together is a double negative situation? I don't really understand
Found the answer commented below.
Double negatives are an English construct. Other languages often have double negatives as proper grammar.
しよりさんはすごくかわいいですよ。
ummm, George... at about 7 minutes into the video you refer to (as I understood it) your wife as OKUSAN. Also, on the subject of family, isn't OJISAN someone else's grandfather? Like, not uncle..?
watch the previous video (#48)
Thanks, did that. I hate how 'tube mixes the order of these videos for me.

George, I want to support your work. Which is the best way to do that? Is it to buy the JFZ book series, or is it something else?
Shiru ni jyuu hairygana.
Neow.
whattayshe ga yokuu wakayreemahsaying.
しおりさんは本当に綺麗ですね~
関西弁がええやんけ!
Man if you translate the "not often" sentence directly it becomes a double negative in English.
Mr George, if your wife was at home i don't think that you could hit on the table like that (end of the video) :P
How is "Often goes back" not proper English? I would very rarely say "Often returns".😅
わたしはあまりポキボルかいます。
*Still playing Pokemon go
Siri told me: すみません よくわかりません。
What does よく mean in this case?
よく In that case means properly, or well as in "I don't understand well" in a literal sense. Another example of that usage would be よく聞いてください "Please listen well"
This is the OTHER version I explained in the video. I don't understand "well".
"Properly" would be ちゃんと and is much stronger meaning than よく. I actually explained the 2nd meaning of よく in the video.
Learn Japanese From Zero! I watched the whole video. But, for some reason, I still got confused. I wasn't able to make the connection, even though it appears so simple now. (I feel stupid!)
I always watch the whole video before commenting, and I am also watching everything in order. I don't want to be one of those people you complain about at the start of your videos!! :-D

wtf why do you buy pokeballs!?
who parties after a plane crash lmfao
Omg shiori is hot af 😍 🥵
This is why I'm learning にほんご
Shiori is way too distracting of a teacher, I prefer George
