That’s known as a Wolf Spider, they can be very aggressive. TPI you were correct, tuned port injection! 👍 WS6 has been around for a good while, it’s basically a handling and performance package.
Lol great guys love thier work but they know absolutely nothing about cars 🚗 especially the firebird experience ! Lol . WS6 handling package and the formula was a performance package of course like you said ! They mentioned Trans Am with was a good thing . That hood as they mentioned ....that was usually a meaning for a turbo ? . Great show though guys
I run a GetGo/WetGo carwash, I’m sure you’ve heard of it cause you’re in the Ohio area, but you have no idea how happy it makes me that you guys actually do a presoak before pressure washing. Every other detailer just pressure washes with no chemical applied to the car before hand which makes the cleaning process longer, and increases risk of damage. Thank you for actually using a presoak, it makes a world of difference!
WS6 is an RPO code, or line item used when ordering the spec of a car. The WS6 code refers to the upgraded suspension on a Pontiac Firebird. It's more commonly found on Trans Ams. The "Formula" version of the firebird had all the best performance parts, but was striped body wise to save weight. Which is why it has the WS6, but no ground effects. I'm surprised it doesn't have the 5.7L 350.
@@BobMinnick-pe6zl Actually that looks to be a ‘91-‘92 and would have the displacement callouts on the side of the hood scoop. Either “5.0 F.I.” Or “5.7 T.P.I.”
Not sure why it's surprising about a 350 not being in the car. It is just an option afterall when ordering. The formula could be equipped with the L98 (350) or LB9 (305) engine. The 305 can be mated to a 5 speed manual trans or auto. The 350 was only available in auto. Also you could have a base model formula with no WS6 and there were 3 level of suspensions to be had based on which trim level the car is. It's nice to see that this one had the CC1 option (ttops). When I had my 87 trans am, it was equipped with the TPI 305/auto/ the posi 2.77 rear end with aluminum drum brakes plus the WS6 suspension, ttops, the 140mph speedometer & power everything. When I had my 1989 GTA trans am it was everything that 87 had but more: 350/auto/3.27 posi disc brakes/WS6 and ttops with every power option including sunshades. It was the only year that a GTA was available to be equipped with ttops and a 350. Now I'm currently restoring a hardtop 1991 GTA trans am. This one has the L98 350/auto (will become a t56 conversion) with the factory installed 3.23 posi system drum brake (will be converting to disc) WS6 with all the power options. All I can say is that I love these thirdgens.
I've watched a ton of your content now, but this has to be one of my favourites, also the sound of that firebird running was amazing, love Pontiac Trans-Am's and firebird's. Would love to see you guys do a 1980's turbo Trans-Am. I wanted to buy a deathtrap tee but your shop site didn't work 😢
WS-6 was indeed a performance package used on 3rd Gen Firebirds, and the Formula by that time was mostly an appearance package, unlike the old days when it actually meant a powerful car. In fact, I think the Turbo Bulge hood was part of that package, along with a posi rear.
I bought a flame red 87 Trans Am brand new in Chicago. It had most of the GTA extras, with glass T-tops, manual transmission, 5.0 high output engine, and full body panel skirting with the wide rear deck spoiler and pop-up headlights. I loved driving the car way too much.. LOL.
I had an ‘89 GTA Trans Am in black when I lived in the UK from 1992 to 1999. Fantastic car, it had the L98 350 motor and was imported brand new and derestricted into the UK by the first owner. I was the second owner and purchased it with 19,000 miles. Only modification I made was putting a cat back Flowmaster exhaust system on it. I used to write a Running Report article each month for American Car World magazine while I owned it.
Very nice looking car. I had a poster of one of those I picked up at the Pontiac area of an auto show back in the early 90s. I am surprised you never saw the hood scoop only on the left side. Those go back to at least the 1981 Trans Am. The 3rd generation had it from the first year. KITT on Knight Rider had one, and it wasn't custom to the show.
Mid to late 60's MOPAR...my favorite era for muscle cars. I'm partial to the Belvedere. And The Dukes of Hazzard was my favorite show growing up in the 80s.
holy moly this car is amazing, i love it. i prefer 3rd gens over the others, and this engine is heaven for me. i would have died while finding that huge spider tho XD that burnout was sick!
I got a black 01 questionable Camaro SS m6 that seems to be in similar condition. Got an engine tick so started taking front off engine planning on rebuild, and then life got in the way. Been off the road for 5 years under a car cover. Well, under 3 covers as they deteriorate over time and are basically shredded. Was nice when I started taking engine apart. Needs a nice detail like this to motivate me into getting back to work on it.
Since the 70s, you had the regular Firebird, Firebird Formula and Firebird Trans Am. Formula and Trans Ams were basically the same, but had a different look. Same engine options etc. WS6 was also from the 70s. Option package with 4 wheel disc brakes and better handling components.
I had 91 formula that looked just like the dirty one. It was a 4 on the floor with a strong but slow 305, it was a gorgeous car in and out wish I still had it
3 things: 1.) the Camaro and Firebird have ALWAYS been twins. The Firebird has always been sharper looking imho in every iteration. 2.) The Firebird was a performance/trim level just below the Trans Am. 3.) The bird logo is called the SCREAMING CHICKEN Caps used here for emphasis, not yelling 😊
All Trans Ams are Firebirds, but not all Firebirds are Trans Ams. It’s like Camaro Z28, Camaro SS, Mustang GT, Mustang Cobra. It’s Firebird, Firebird Formula, Firebird Trans Am. And yes it’s a screaming chicken
surprisingly the cowl hood on that generation of firebird is functional. It works off the vacuum system, theres a flap at the opening that at a certain rpm opens up to suck in more air.

Yes, TPI is Tuned Port Injection. The "tuned" part comes from the tubular intake runners. It was originally used on the C4 Corvette 350, replacing that awful "Crossfire" injection system, and was later used on the F body V8s, both 305 and 350. The tubes were "tuned" to direct airflow more equally to each cylinder than a standard intake manifold.
Looks like a replacement hatch off a blue car. Hence missing spoiler. Man these were cool late 80s early 90s. Few friends had one as did my parents. What a joy to borrow!
WS6 was a suspension package available on the Trans Am GTA and firebird formula starting in 1987 on up to the final year 2003. It was an optional package and yes, those wheels are correct for that car. Also yes, TPI stands for Tuned port injection.

We owned 1995 Pontiac Firebird. The sweetest car we ever owned. She was so much fun to drive. Hubby and I would race to the car to see who would drive…I fought to keep the car after 5 years, but hubby won out! She had a black body, black ragtop. Bright Red leather interior. The Firebird (as we were told) was one step down from the Trans Am. I believe she had a 357 engine…the headlights weren’t the type to flip up…The back seat could be occupied by one person, who stretched out across the seat, or little kids. Tiny trunk, but it was a convertible. The top had to fold into someplace. I believe the only thing in my bucket list would be to either see, own, or if she’s been abused, know what happened.
