    Back in the day I bought a BRAND NEW 1988 IROC just like this one - even the same colour. 18 months later I went to a car show and won one of the grand prizes. The prize i got was to rebuild the engine, tranny, suspension, rear end, etc with a NOS kit. The car had Centerline rims that could handle 750 ponies. It was way too much fun. I sold it a number of years later - family on the way. To this day when I see a black IROC all the memories come back. Awesome ride guys!

    I had an 1985 IROC-Z black and gold. I loved it when I was 21 years old. I'm loving this video. The interior has been changed. No CD in 85 model (tape player) and newer radio. The gauges are from a newer IROC, 87, 88 or 89 and speedometer for an 305 only went to 85 MPH, the steering wheel is not from an 85 either. This is bringing back some great times behind the wheel of my IROC. I'm older now.., have a 2018 Corvette Z06 that is a beast. Thanks for the vid fellas!

    Check to see if the engine is actually a 5.7. The TPI engines came both in 5.0 as well as 5.7 in the Irocs and Pontiac Trans Am GTA . You would know by checking the sticker under the hood. Some of the Irocs also had the badging on the rear bumper that would say "5.7 Tuned Port Injection" instead of just "Tuned Port Injection". Regardless though, these are great modern, American classics.

    Check the RPO codes, make sure it's a real IROC. It's very easy to make a Z28 look like an IROC, especially considering it was repainted and re-stickered, and that might explain why it has the wrong hood on it, even though Z28s also got the louvered hood. The v6/RS hood makes me worry for you - it's very odd why that would of gotten on there. Look at the front cradle, does it have the wonderbar suspension brace as an Iroc should? IIRC, the RPO codes were in the center console glove box on a sticker. Assuming it's even the original center console... Verify the VIN on the sticker matches the one in the door jamb.

    On the RPO code sheet in the glove box you should find the code B4Z. That will ensure it was a factory IROC-Z. As stated, the RS standard hood is a worry. Plus, I didn't see a third brake light so that tells me it's an 85 and would have come with a 305 Tuned Port if ordered. The engine by looking at the valve covers tells me it's an 86 and earlier block. Run the code off the block to verify it is actually a 350. The seats are from a 4th gen Camaro and the CD could be from a 91 or 92 GM product.

    • @chriscarlisle1974
      @chriscarlisle1974 3 месяца назад +1

      Another tell tale way at first glance is the fact that it says "Tuned Port Injection" on the back bumper and right below the Z28 on the sides. The 350 had a "5.7 Tuned Port Injection" badge on the rear and same for the sticker below Z28 on the sides.

    Great find guys and for the price its a really great find. So, I bought my IROC back in 1986, so i'm the original owner. I bought my first 3rd gen in 1982, a white Z28. I'll do my best to give you the right info on the IROC's. First, the engines were all 305's up until 1987 when Chevy started putting the 350's in them. Despite all the rumors and urban legends no 1986 IROC's were sold with the 350 in them.. However, that doesn't mean none were made. Chevy did make 50 IROC's with the L98 350 in 1986 but, these cars were not sold to the public. Some were scrapped BUT an unknown number were given to "special" customers. So yes there are some reeeally rare 1986 350 IROC's out there but I doubt the average is out there selling one. A lot of people have dropped a 350 in their 86 (like me) so you can find those out there. Other things on the IROC's are the tail light covers, which are different then the regular Z28's, and the other options in the IROC package that were mentioned. As far as the hood goes the only difference is the louvers that were on the IROC's as the regular Z28's did not have louvers. However I have met a couple of people who say they ordered louvers for their Z's when they ordered the car from the dealer. I'm guessing that may have been an option you could do. The IROC decal on the door moved to the rear of the door in 1988 and the Z28 decal around the car were changed to IROC-Z decals. So I've only touched on a few of the "bigger" differences on the IROC's. These are certainly not all the differences.

    • @stevenanderson-c8n
      @stevenanderson-c8n 3 месяца назад +1

      Oh and one more thing. That speedometer IS for that car. I don't know why but Chevy made 3 different speedometers for the IROC's, an 85, a 115 and a 145. I got stuck with an 85 lol.

    I had an 85 IROC that was black with gold wheels and decals. The interior was also gray. The speedo is not correct, therefore the mileage is unknown, definitely not 14k. The seats are incorrect. It should have a low back bucket with separate headrest. This would have originally had a TPI 305 as the TPI wasn’t available until 87. Run the block codes as it could have been 350 swapped as mine was. The louvered hood is correct for an IROC. I do believe the trim around the fog lights isn’t correct for the year, I don’t recall the bow tie, only the camaro text. Still, overall it’s a nice car, good find. 👍

It's covered with dust and has a little bit of rust here and there, but once I put a battery charger on it, she fired right up. Of course, it ran like complete 💩, but what would you expect when it has almost 40 year-old fuel in it? I'd take it out of the barn and go for a spin, which brought back all of those wonderful memories from when I'd roll into my high school's parking lot, all shiny and looking sharp. It was just like I remembered it with the T-tops off and the wind blowing through my sweet mullet. Those were the greatest days of my life, and I would give anything - and I mean anything - to be able to go back and do it all over again.....

    I loved this video, I live in Sweden and have a black, Iroc-Z28, t-top from 1988 with the 350 tpi. I have the blue stripes and silver decals instead of gold. If the car is from 1988 and forward, the door stickers will be placed on the back part of the doors, if its from earlier years the stickers is placed at the front of the doors. The hood on your car is not from an Iroc, but the ”vented” hood you got with the car is for an Iroc. But its not actually vented. It should have been, because the engine gets really hot when you drive slow in the summer. 😅 The engine is big and the car is low, so the heat have a hard time to get out of the engine room. I connected a switch so I can run both the cooling fans permanently, that helps a lot. If you still have the car, comsider to buy the black out kit for the rear lights, it really makes it look bad ass.

    This car is a mess...a complete compilation of parts from other cars. Very little about this car is original. It's obviously not the original odometer and HIGHLY unlikely to be a 14K mile car. The bottom of the car is a rusted mess. All the lines are rusted out. The engine is locked up. You'd be time and money ahead to find one not so molested. No way would I have bought this thing.

    Mike 80's cars had many power options but it depended on the Model...The base usually had Nothing.....Usually a pkg option for pwr windows and locks.....you could add on.
    Now a days you Se Sel Limited and titanium for example very similar.
    Back then it would be Cutlass Supreme or Supreme Brougham......Brougham had more of the options.
    Like Power antenna versus the stationary whip antenna!!! Power seats , windows, locks.
    Many different pkg levels......depending on the one you might not be able to add an option....was kinda crazy. Different dashes analog vs digital.
    Like the Camaros.... base had less options, RS a bit more and Iroc...many options but still pkgs could give you even more like convenience or power pkg. Especially Mid 80's and beyond.

    I had an 1989 iroc z-28 a couple years ago with the 350. It was fast enough. You can figure the miles to be true a couple ways. Steering is one way. It'll be tight and responsive. Look at the pedals. A 100k pedal is pretty flat on grooves. A low k pedal will look like new. Anywhere hands touch . I got $3800 for mine just before COVID. If I didn't have 2 79 montes and a 79 elky I'd of kept it.

    I’ve owned four of these beginning in 1986 when I purchased my first one. While this is a cleaner car it is not a 14,000 mile car. A 14k car would be pristine underneath, up top and inside. No chance a 14k car would have aftermarket Accel decals on the rad support either. These cars with low mileage are very special to the iroc community and would have been cared for meticulously. There would not be any crustiness underneath. Those seats are not original, the radio either. The door panels are from a 88 up car but the arm rest rests appear to be correct for an early iroc. Great car just the same as it is a true iroc based on your description of the vin. I’ve got some videos of my black 85 Ls swapped Iroc if you care to see. Enjoy it.

    The wheels were labeled front because the rear wheels are a little bit wider. I know this because I bought an '85 TransAm new in '85 and the first time I went to get the tires rotated, as I was driving out I turned the steering wheel and heard a knocking noise. The wheels were hitting the tie rods. Had them put them back.
    Mine had a speedometer that only went up to 85mph; that was the last year they had 85mph speedometers in them.
    Mine also had power windows, power locks, power mirrors, so that was not a rare package at all. My factory sound system didn't have a CD player though; just radio and cassette. They had small 6" subs in the B-pillars that sounded surprisingly good, until they dried out years later and the cones cracked.
    Mine had the same original 305 the IROC had and mandatory automatic tranny. Only 215HP which is laughable these days, but she was plenty fast enough for me. Mind was maroon with silver/black fade striping at the bottom of the doors, and a silver screaming chicken on the hood. No scoops or louvers on the hood. Chicken cracked badly over the years; I was told it was at least partly my fault because I waxed it when waxing the car. No idea if that was true or not, but when I had to have the car repainted after an accident that luckily wasn't my fault, I opted not to replace the decal.

    The reason the rims are stamped front and rear is because the original tires were directional so you couldn’t do a traditional tire rotation. I had purchased a brand new irocz in 1987.
