I love how Spartacus, when he is standing from water, looks at Glaber for a moment (and Batiatus notes that), then he turns left to keep fighting, and before the last punch to the gladiator, he looks at Glaber again (and I also get the impression that he continues to keep his gaze with him after finishing) . Great actor, and great director.

I know right! It was a subtle scene wonderfully portraying Glaber's disbelief and desperation/near panic at that point. Great acting by Glaber's actor too. Why tf would that be deleted?

This draws heavily from the classic Samurai films of Akira Kurosawa, (Sanjuro, Yojimbo)
Also "Sword Of Doom" (1966) and "Hara Kiri" (1962), both from other directors.

A gladiator if clashing with a Roman infantry man would be at a huge advantage. They trained to fight with multiple weapons and to fight alone, a soldier fought with sword and shield with formations and Organizated team work as the goal. A Roman soldier basic training was learned to first dig trenches- then marching and moving in formation then a disciplined thrusting motion with a sword protected by a shield- this would be like attacking a top card ufc fighter or boxer with a half dozen army infantry soldiers, no one would be that surprised if the ufc fighter came out on top.

Andy Whitfield was and outstanding actor. He made you think of the glory of the old time Roman Epics. I was honestly shocked when I read of his passing. They could have built a trilogy of time honored movies around him. The rest of the cast were no less as competent and historically renowned as they all have played very impactful roles before.

@@saul2491 Who betrayed who first? Spartacus agreed to join the Auxiliary, then he broke his oath and convinced his brothers to go home. That's not how soldiering works, once you sign the terms of enlistment, they own you. Also, the idea that the Auxilia fights and the Roman legionnaires pick up the pieces is absurd. The Auxilia aids in the fighting, they might be slingers, archers, etc, but they're not the main force.

@@saul2491 Watch the first episode again. They didn't want to join until Spartacus convinced them. The deal was that Spartacus and his people would fight for Rome, and Rome would fight the Getta. I admit that the Romans broke that deal, but that happens. Military recruiters are also famous for lying, they promise you a certain job, but if your math scores are low or some other reason, you won't get it.

Whenever Spartacus gets knocked down and stands up, with the music activating in slow mo, it's like the legends in Eastern works of skilled warriors and their killing intent aka Murder Aura. Everyone feels it when he activates it. When his eyes go there way its like they are being stared at by a predator.
This, right here, is how you write a cracked out warrior bro with violence on his mind.
