Agreeing with Jack -- Andrew is an unparalleled host. Great stuff as always. Keep it up, pureMix!
Thank you for the kind words
I remember working with both of these guys in the same studio for a while. Studio 55 in LA. They were awesome then. JJP was particularly generous with his time and listened to some mixes I was doing in my spare time. He was doing the Spent Poets. Andrew was clean shaven and was very intense and not too well known….this would have been 1990/1 I’d guess. Incredible.
I can't believe that I watched 4 hours and wanted more! JJP and Andrew are both absolute legends!
My 2 favourites. Incredible host.
i wish the interviewee had a mic plugged in like Andrew, so much better to hear, maybe you guys should suggest, im sure most of them have mics lol Thanks!
It can be difficult to hear some words for sure but it's a streaming quality thing. Jack could use his most precious mic and it would never sound as clear as Andrews mic how much he tried.
turns out there is a mic faaaar away from his mouth, look at his left hand
Just synchronize sound later to the video...
The thing that I love about Jack, is that in all the interviews I've seen, whenever the interviewer compliments him, he always deflects it back to the music or the artist being what's great, but the way he describes his process you KNOW he's responsible for so much of why that music is great. He's such a genius but so humble and comes across like a servant to the music and the artist. Such a pro and so inspiring!
I find him passive aggressive, he certainly has the career the awards. The proof is in the pudding, he is great at what he does . He knows that, and believes it for sure, that's why he can push off the compliment. In his elite, situation if he didn't, then you wouldn't love him haha
During his answers he's inflating his ego and letting you know how important and special he is..
He loves to hear himself talk, and smell His Own farts hahhaa
And I'm glad he is talking I am grateful to ge to listen, but I have to filter some of his Dry Cheezyness ..
Just call it like see it....
I got the same impression. Even when Andrew would share his perspective on some things, Jack would come back and try to one up him. Especially during the part about using compression to move the music...which is just basically manipulating the attack and release. Andrew simplified it to basically that but Jack come right back and one up him.
100% . ZERO me - 100% serving the song. He is truly amazing! Agreed!
Spilt Milk is one of the greatest engineered and produced records ever. It would be awesome to hear some of the details. I think I heard that JJP mic’d the tubes of the guitar amps. He doesn’t talk much about it here, but I first heard his production when he was doing Christian rock, Phil Keaggy.. JJP was doing amazing work right out of the gate.
I got tired of these mixer talks (Pensado's Place, Produce Like A Pro etc), helpful (essential!) as they were in the beginning for me. But this one, wow, this is most enjoyable. Thank you Andrew and everyone involved spending time sharing your experiences! Cheers, from Germany, Sven
I think it is about level of honesty..coz i stopped too. Jaycen Joshua for exsample is on point honest and also very interesting to listen, so pretty much we can now pick who we listen. Ali started streaming too
@@RTCLR123 Yeah, Jaycen is cool. Still have to watch that one. It's kinda time consuming, ha ha, as Andrew did so much of these.
Aaaaand this is so good I'm watching all 4 hours. Thank you Andrew and Jack!!!!! Love hearing all the story's. As Jack said its the story's n pointers people give that we remember so it's like all those people mixing. New bundle called Collective consciousness. Thnx again everyone!!
Thank you, Fab! and Andrew! The story about micing John Mayer on Daughters
surprised me for a second, and then I thought omg, JJ Puig is an architect. He's
building this recording from the very floor and walls, up to the guitar pick and even
John's physical posture while playing. Ha! It is soooo true, details matter...
thanks for the kind words Sean !!!
@@PuremixAudioTutorials this series is just off the charts amazing, thanks again!
Gold here. Why they used Zoom audio for Jack while he’s sitting in a studio is... has me dumbfounded. I have clients that refuse to do that too for their podcasts and it drives me crazy, but I never ever expected this kind of thing here. Use one of the many solutions for a cleaner live feed and for post you have to spend a little time syncing it up to the zoom guide track, or use that Red Giant app to do it. Andrew, this needs to be recorded properly for posterity please... I’ll do it, have someone do it, because this content is pure gold. Thank you for posting the interview I learned a lot.
That was the best interview of the series ! Despite the connection issues. PART 2 PLEASE :))
JJP's studio camera mic is easily on par with Steve Vai's.
I'm just a guy with a 2020, BLA12a , CAD M179 , a Sens 935 and 835 , Tube MP and even a Mic100.... in my personal Band Studio......but when JJP and AS talk for 4 hours I relish every word..... even when the signal crashed....just too good to miss. This is great stuff Mr. Scheps . Two very fascinating guys
Jack Joseph Puig is basically Yoda at this point. The man talks more prophetically and passionately about mixing and gear than anyone I've ever heard. Just his answers alone are inspiring. What a fucking guy. Shame there aren't way more videos with him.
He's a bit more loquacious than Yoda. Maybe more of a Mace Windu. Really he's more like Han Solo in his attitude and charisma, but like, if Han had three different Jedi mentors.
Agree wish there was more videos of JJP
Yeah his mindset is like no other. Scheps is amazing too!
"Who says I can't use two compressors? Who says I can't use three? Who says I can't use two mics? I didn't have limitations because I didn't come from the old school, and that allowed me to break the rules that those guys wouldn't break... And they needed to be broken." -Jack Joseph Puig
LOVELY how little tech talk there is here! That made it both hypnotic and informative in a more artistic way than talks like this can often become.
That makes THIS one of the series possibly the one that gets the closest to the heart of why things have evolved the way that they have.
A little bit of tech-talk peppered in here and there keeps it relevant for engineers. Especially at the end.
But at the end, JJP sums it all up in one sentence: What’s the WHY?
What is the WHY behind what we are doing at every minute along the way.
When I had a rare day off because it was a Sunday and I had a bit of a cold, I listened to this whole thing TWICE back to back, and it was still interesting the second time through.
This whole thing is just IN THE ZONE.
👍😎👍
In response to comments made at the 2 hour 20 minute mark - I do consume music listening between a pair of excellent speakers powered by high quality amplification and great players.... can't stand listening on laptops or phones!
talking about compression, try manic Compressor (sorry, forgot maker/company), you probably wont be using any other software compressor...its really a swiss knife...etc.
Holdsworth has numerous times denied, that he played on Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan.
It's Jimmy page
on vocals? rvox and IK's white la2...that's it (and then you can uses any saturation or eq or chorus or reverb or delay....etc to waves L 3-16 at the end).
The first 2 hours was amazing and it just got better and better from there.
Excellent Adam! thanks for the kind words glad you enjoyed this episode
Well.
Apart from being this just great and Andrew being a great interviewer and so on...
(which it is and he is)
I am shocked, really shocked about the delays. And... stuff. Not in this only. I mean. These are GEEKS! They should know.
So. If this is what the net is providing...
There is Luft nach oben, as we say in Germany.
Totally agree - nearly all of these interviews look and sound like they're conducted over some 90's dial up protocol...
@@miserablesod1 hahaha ... clearly, you've forgotten what that experience was like ... or never knew! 😝
I didn't catch why JJP thinks Coles 4038s as overheads are cheating
Because it’s a lo-fi, colored Sound which makes it harder to hear problems with mic placement and phase
Great questions. Puig is not an easy guy to be intervied. Triple thumbs up for Scheps.
After becoming a fan of Andrew Scheps I listened to every interview/Q+A with him on RUclips. Now you guys have him talking with other great minds -- this is brilliant. Fantastic content! Scheps is great whether he's the interviewer or interviewee!
thank you for watching!!! we really appreciate your feedback on those interviews!!
Full disclosure; I'm a complete novice trying to record my band at home. I've been diving in the past few years on how to record after 20 years of being a bar band. But obviously i feel we are more than that because of some special magical moments weather be it live or in the studio and the feedback that was more than genuine. thus like all my fellow musicians i am chasing that feeling once again but this time on our terms. These types of interviews are transformative for schumks like me to gain insight to these heavy weights discussing the beauty of the recording art. Thank you Andrew and Joseph for powering thru a 4 hour session and making seem like just two dudes having an 5 min convo. Somehow i lost track of time and now i have to find my kids now. Thanks guys. This is the kind of shit we need more of... Peace and love!
Thanks !!! Keep it up !!!
My favorites plus Dave Pensado. The best 3.
Sucked in every minute of this. Great great thing you did here
Thank you two so so much for doing this... 🙏❤
+1 for the Bassplayers-List. :D
There’s alittle beef in there air around 3:40:00. Love it!!
"There are no tangents." -Rob Bell :)
When the music engineer or audio engineer becomes a Sonic frequency orchestrator !
I'm from Los Angeles, it was very interesting to hear him talk about Glen oaks just simply because I'm a stone's throw from glenoaks and Glendale right now. My father was involved with the production of the video LA woman by The Doors.... I kind of grew up on set in Los Angeles when I was a kid, started playing instruments when I was really young got involved with film and film music for a while and it's great to hear guys with tenure in their background cuz it's not unlike listening to incredible directors of photography screenwriters etc.
Joseph and Scheps are incredible... Thank you so much kind sirs! This is the kind of stories that people have been around the block kind of want to hear maybe not exactly at the level that you guys have worked out but for me personally this is much loved and appreciated.
jjp voice reminds me of tom delonge voice!
U gotta have a wav plugin to talk to andrew
Fantastic conversation - so many nuggets in there and great rapport between Andrew and JJP - well done all...
JJP is the real deal man, what an awesome guy. So much wisdom in this conversation. What a time to be alive when you can get 4 hrs of pure gold from absolute legends just like that. It’s incredible! Many thanks once again to Puremix for making these conversations available!!
I'd so much prefer the conversations to be face2face. Zoom (or whatever) drives me crazy... It's the sound but also the delayed interaction.
Damn , The villain from die hard
There was a moment in my life when that Jellyfish album released and nothing else mattered in my life .. then another …
How nice to go revisit that time but now in this format !!
great interview, so funny when hes talking about 'consumer electronics' and his video is sideways
Amazing conversation! I learn so much from these!! hilarious that JJP is sitting in that room yet couldn’t scare up a mic/hardware to plug in. He gets a pass cause I know that running analog gear into a computer can be kinda overwhelming.
But he says he’s been using pro tools since the beginning. 🤷♂️
huge respect for Andrew...right man for this biz....we need more Andrews in the Music Biz....etc.
Wow! Thank you! This was incredible.
Thanks so much !!! Really great series with tons of knowledge and inspiration inside..
Semisonic were awesome song writers, every album is worth a listen
Not endorsed by UA but they do have emulated the Cyclosonic Panner for the one interested.
Holdsworth did not play on Hurdy Gurdy Man. It was Alan Parker.
I never heard about semisonics before this video, so I looked them up they have really good songs
This was a treat, thanks to all involved!!
Thanks for watching!
I watched this video in intervals over a couple of days so I can absorb all the aspects that were talked about, it was eye opening. I'm so grateful and happy to be a participant of this community. One topic they touched on, which they did not go into depth, is about getting fired from a mix, any chance Andrew can go into depth on this topic in his next interview please? It would be nice to understand, why did that happen? How do you approach a situation like that? And how do you move on? What are the steps to take for it not to happen for the next mix? This could be very helpful to learn on self progression as a mixer. Thanks & I love pureMix

This is super fun to watch!
JJP is very sure of himself.
These are so great. It’s already been said here but this one is quite inspiring. 👍🏼
awesome
PureMix - love this. The guests are always mixed too low compared to Andrew. Very noticeable on earbuds. Thanks
JJP is super inspiring.

Watching this series, I've developed my own cliche, of saying, 'two of my favourite sound-masters together'. But, it's difficult to deny it, especially here. The fist time I saw an extended interview with JJP, I just new he was a wizard. It's not that the records that he's made that have become famous, because I wasn't aware of those when I first heard him, it was his unique insight, his approach, his humility, his passion, his love of the job, his soul for music. I don't want to say I admire these two guys, I want to be the flame bearer of their sonic legacy and their continuing journey.
It would be so good if Andrew interview musicians, and I imagine, Andrew, interviewing Jacob Colier!
Amazing interview!!!!! Thanks Andrew!
