i also watched him when he was talking with Dave Pensado. Really a unique personality that i would love to have as a friend, co- worker. He has some similarity to Larry David and other jewish people- that depth of detail and humanity - it makes others look formal and fake. For some reason i love jewish people ( Seinfeld, Ben Stiller , etc ) 3 Hours ? it' s gold. Will be a classic with 1 million views. Thanks !

This is just a brilliant interview and Warren has a knack to connect with JJP and audience on so many dimensions I will have to replay this video at least 5 times for all the concepts to sink in. One of the those is that of 'Preset Culture' which I think a good analogy would be the shift from analog 'don't touch anything' synths of the seventies to eightys digital synths. So right now we would be in the Vince Clark era...Preset Culture has yet to mature. Also I made a hardware plug in that produces that tight new roomy kick that came up in the conversation which I will be posting on my channel for anyone interested which could just be that next big thing.

Hi Friends, it’s such a privilege to be able to interview Jack Joseph Puig. J.J.P. Has made some of the best sounding albums ever. As you know we talked with Roger Manning extensively about the Jellyfish albums that JJP made and we waxed lyrically about how incredible they sounded! Who would you like to hear from next?

Jesus Christ that left me speechless. First time I ever found myself clapping alone in my room while this interview wrapped up. Simply the most well rounded and level headed interview I've ever seen in the audio world. Very powerful and affirming...makes you feel reassured that you're on the right path, and for the right reasons.
"The day you wake up and feel like going to the beach, that's the day your career is over.."-JJP
I couldn't have summed it up any better.

The way that JJP talks and i bet he lives the same, will help him reach over 100 years old. Slow and calculated, not a bit of inpatience or anger. Wisdom. He is the wisdom of mixing. Dave Pensado is the wizard of mixing. Manny Marokin is the proudest of mixing, Tony Maseratti is the machine of mixing, CLA is the illusionist of mixing, Warren Huart is the joy of mixing.

I will always say Mr Puig’s work on Weezer’s Pinkerton is the most perfect mix for any record. It’s not hifi or clean, but its grittiness and overt saturation just perfectly matches the tone of the songs. The man is nothing short of a genius.

Gotta say that, these interviews are priceless.
Usually people do 10 - 20 min interviews and try to make it entertaining for the viewer making it "inorganic". Warren however just manages to make it super casual and honest, as if he's having a discussion in the morning with a cup of coffee... I guess the same profession and interests make the chemistry go through the roof and that makes him guide the discussion well.
Can't thank you enough for these videos :)

Ha !!! I did a vocal track a few weeks ago... Warmed up my voice on the way to the studio (10 minute drive), played trombone and trumpet for 30 minutes to get my “air, buzz, relax” going. Sang the song first an octave lower to get the vibe, timing, and again warm up. Finally ready, I kicked the crap out of it, sang the song about 5 times...saved, went home, started to mix and realized that the interface had never engaged and all that work ended up being recorded by the internal mic on my computer. Aaaaarrrrgggghhh !!!
I haven’t had the heart to go back and try to sing that song again.
And it’s weird because I ALWAYS do a quick listen back, but for some stupid reason I didn’t that day.

It would be fantastic if you get an interview with Jimmy Page. Guitarist, producer and probably the only artist/producer with the mastertapes still in his possession. That would be a treat Warren. Two English gentlemen talking over a cup of tea. Brian May will do as well 😊 By the way, is Mr Puig a vampire. Quite dark in there. Good for your eyes though. Great interview and a cozy studio.

I was in one of those Christian Bands that JJP talked about when he worked at Martin Sound in the mid 70's. We locked out the small studio "B" and JJP would drop in often to talk and check things out. He was a great guy even back then. I have always followed his career (from a distance) and am still amazed at how great an engineer, producer and humble person he has become. Thanks for the in-depth interview. Took me back to some old memories -- as well learning so much new.

Unreal! The way JJP almost swaps the role with Warren, listening ever so carefully to what he has to say. Trying to learn from him, never thinking he's the main "character" here... very humble and nice.
He relaxes Warren into opening up and telling us a lot more than we would have learnt if JJP was the only one answering questions here... Best 3 hours I've spent in front of my laptop in a long time. Thank you!

I’m a doctor, I’ve been doing what Jack does for 40 years. Adapting. Like no two songs, no two patients are ever the same . Some need more compression, some less and some 2. Only practice tells you which. I bought Jack’s Puigchild compressor from waves and used it exclusively on everything for about 1 month. It was only when I moved to another compressor that I knew what the Puigchild did. I use one drug on someone for arthritis, it doesn’t work. A similar drug does. Why? Who knows? After a while ( about 10 years) the history from the patient influences your first choice ever more accurately. Time is the conqueror, but also the teacher.

The reassuring thing about JJP, is that if you asked him if he wanted to help you record something, he seems like the type of guy to ask what you had in mind and actually help you. No questions about price, no question about publicity or credits, he would just hop right in and get busy with you. A true character. Ahead of his time. Thank you Warren, amazing work as always.

Warren, your output is phenomenal, always enjoyable and informative. But this 3 hour video is just at another level. Whatever there was to say - emanating from either of you - was debated and explored beyond gear and geekery right into the heart and philosophy of music making, human interaction and society. And just how many quotable words of wisdom does JJP have?!? Your best yet, sir, and hands down right up there with the very best discussions about music in the ether. Bravo

Thanks so much Warren. You are just so on fire at the moment with these interviews - Jack Douglas and JJP - these were practically life changing for me because they were all about insight, not just information. i started recording at home in about 1985/6 on a 4-track Tascam portastudio (4 track to cassette tape). In New Zealand then the only time I ever even got to read a copy of Sound on Sound (and didn't even know it existed before) was because the band i did live sound for spent $10,000 to make 3 songs in a major studio and they had a library of imported mags like that. No internet, just about no books, no music documentaries - i'm sure most younger people have no idea what a blessing your interviews are and what it used to take to scour meagre resources to learn a tiny fraction of what was covered today. And how generous for JJP to spend 3 hrs sharing. Let me know if you're up for a knighthood - I'll vote for you. Thanks Sir Warren.

And thank you Warren for all the things you share with us. There are so many channels that teach how to mix a kick drum or heavy guitars. Just a couple deal with a broader view on mixing. Only very few give deep insights to the art of music production on each level to show the complete picture. Your channel is definitely one of the very few ones.

JellyFish's albums, "Bellybutton" and "Spilt Milk" are two of my favorite albums, largely in part due to the sound, texture and tone of these albums. They are true engineering and production masterpieces. Listening to JJP has been one of the most interesting videos I have ever seen on the subject. Just listen to Bellybutton's "That Is Why". The feeling JJP is talking about, is within the sound of that song, in spades. Just awesome.

It’s like listening to Neil Peart speak. Always love hearing JJP. I knew this wouldn’t be a super technical and nerdy one but definitely the most inspiring.
What they’re saying about our lifestyle and marriages and love life is so true too. Imagine being the TOURING audio guy, our family/love life’s are even worse 😨

14:35 Wow this is some powerful stuff from mister Puig.
I was thinking couple days ago about how my instinct become much stronger since I pay attention to it more, and I do not pay attention to my intellect anymore.
Sometimes instinct will tell me lower that sound by 2,3db, or don't use that synth use the other one, don't take that project you will waste your time etc. Almost 99% of the time I will ask myself how do I make that sound, and in couple of days instinct will guide me and I will make that sound by itself, I will accidentally find fx or preset that i was looking for.
And instinct will never spoke to you in the words, that is intellect, you will only feel instinct. But in the beginning it is so silent that you really need to listen and pay attention in order to catch that sense, and after time instinct will become much stronger and it will come to you by itself.
This is so true, this is my experience.

What an absolute marathon of an interview! Before watching this, my favourite videos had been the Michael Beinhorn stuff, love that guy. This was something else though, just wow - mesmerising!
He talks so much sense and leaves no stone unturned. His name should be the definition of thorough. Unassuming, humble, thoughtful, very rare in a guy of his stature - so great to see.
So much content here, it took me 3 sittings to watch the whole thing, there was just so much to take in and comprehend. Excellent!
Thanks for this Wazza & co. - very inspiring...

I'm 6 minutes in of what appears to be a 3 hour vid. Here in JJP's alladin's cave of musical wonderment, already excited like a kid! And, I'm no kid. This man's Wikipeadia entry is basically a huge list; page upon page, of artists and their music. That's fine, I don't really want to gather info like that, I want to hear what JJ has to say. Thank you both

That was fantastic! Thank you for this. I was riveted for the duration. Plus, I watched it immediately after watching your other video with the studio tour of Jack's studio. It was like a 5 hour Jack Joseph Puig marathon. I'm very lucky to have had Jack mic my drums live back in the mid seventies. Then, soon after that, my first time in a pro studio, I was at Whitney Studios where Jack recorded the band I was playing in. The sound on the drums was just plain amazing. Of course, I was very serious about my drum sound even back then. And my drums sounded great to begin with. I remember he used 57's on the snare and toms. It was an Ampex 16 or 24 track machine. I can't say that I've ever got as good a recorded drum sound as that. They were big and fat sounding. Very saturated dry. And very 70's R&B. Anyhow, I agree with the other comments here. I love the depth of this interview and the emphasis on the creative aspects. The art. And the personal cost. So inspiring. I'll definitely watch it again.

28:35 is music to my ears! As a piano/keyboard player I'm always saying that the bass note can dictate how a chord sounds, in fact if you play an octave bass on a piano the upper note is really part of the chord itself. The left hand of a piano player is underrated as a link between the bass and the guitar, a single note can make a huge difference. 😎
