JJP's studio is out of this world! What a gear head in a good way. JJP has a special relationship with his equipment and knows his craft. So knowledgeable. Great interview! A very humble and honest guy with deep insight who is willing to share his knowledge. Wonderful video for all the "preset" generation. Great description of todays studio environment.
I have so much respect and love for JJP, even more so after meeting and studying with him at MWTM in 2014 in France. He is a magician, a wizard, and an alchemist of sound all rolled into one. A great teacher and a kind man.

Love this interview, Warren. When you got to the Blonder-Tongue, you mentioned Joe Zook. Back in 1990, I was in a band with Joe and a commercial producer for KLBJ Radio in Austin, very good producer named Allen Hite. This was before Joe went to school for Audio Engineering and we were going to school in Austin and playing gigs. Pretty cool that Joe went on to become the mixer and engineer that he did; it's very cool to hear you name check him in an interview like this. I last saw Joe in 2013 in Austin during SXSW, right before we moved to Florida. Great video-I'm a big fan of your series.
I'm a fan of JJP's work. I'm completely knocked out at all the modified classic gear! And with ears like JJP's, you know he's getting maximum performances from these sonic instruments! Such a massive palette of possibilities! This is an engineer-producer's wet dream! I love the fact that he takes so much knowledge, and yet isn't afraid to experiment. An artist in every sense of the word. I'm also impressed that he didn't go to great lengths to modify the room, but rather prefers to listen as the listener, in a more open room (leaving room for more gear!). My studio walls are littered with records and books in shelves. They deaden the room fine, for me at least. I've heard many of my mixes in other rooms (studio and domestic), and they hold up great! Many thanks to you Warren, and Mr. Puig. I'm amazed!
Didn't realize until recently how many of my favorite records he'd done. Jellyfish, Sparklehorse, Weezer's Pinkerton, Belly, Remy Zero, The Grays. He may be my favorite producer.

It is so amazing how passionate he is about EVERYTHING! From his gear to perception of dynamic control...so awesome! The way he is describing dynamic control reminds me of Michael Brauer...They both say it doesn't always work, but when it does it's magic...That's what I wanna figure out...Good Balancing is great, but being able to make a mix move...Gregory Scott is into that too...so cool...I'm curious where JJP has been...all these mixers seem to have been showing up so much, but it was like he was gone for a minute unless I'm trippin... It's funny, in a good way, how he catches himself teaching Warren and then he realizes he's preaching to the choir! So much passion...Awesome guy. Guys like this are a dying breed. I would love to be his assistant. In 2 years working with any of the old Masters you probably can learn alot more and faster about the craft compared to 2 years of recording school
Can we be honest with ourselves. I’ve been involuted with recording since 73. I remember how much I wanted a clean signal from mic to tape, I think we all did. I went as far as bouncing a Tascam porta4 to a VCR because it was a digital tape. I’ve alway hear these buzz words like upper harmonics, grit ect. I can take a 15 Band Behringer EQ a DBX 166 comp and add as much (put in buzz word here) that will please any listeners.Then we get the mic snobs, Billy Squire along with Mac producing, recorded “Don’t say no” with using SM57’s on everything including vocals. The music gear manufacturer try to tell us we need this plug-in or the 500 series Neve EQ’s, guess what use your stock plugins and use your imangiation. Talent doesn’t make a plug-in or outboard gear, it’s a gift from God use it to your advantage.
He’s an engineer not a musician. This is their art form.. that’s like telling a guitar player to “shut up and buy a squire.” It’s fine if it’s not an art form to you, or if you don’t care about difference, but others do. A chef knows the exact cut of meat, from the exact farm, fed a specific diet, cured, prepped, and cooked to their specifications. No one is stoping you from eating at Mc Donald’s or denying it tastes good, but don’t shit on the 5 star chef just cuz you’re fine with fast food.

Most of recording greatness comes from the lack of a piece of gear and have to find alternate methods. Happy accidents as Bob Ross says. Glad to have this level of information available. As I love to experiment with mic techniques and mixing tricks that I base on by BE studies in radio frequencies and such, this really validated that way of thinking as not being all that crazy.

this is it. Masterclass with the Grand Master. Seems like anything with EMI or RCA stamped on it has got part of the magic and I was always looking for. Or that mix with the time and spaciousness
Cool studio and storied owner, of course, One item: I have a bunch of Orange County stuff including their version of the ADR Vocal Stressor (Para EQ plus Comp/Limiter) which is very unique and pretty cool sounding, in spite of being full of shyte old 741 op-amps. I think the comment by JJP about who came "first" is incorrect. As far as I know Orange county (in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada) was sued by ADR for copying their stuff. Copy's? They are even built mechanically the same, typical British over-complicated modular mechanical aspect-haha- takes all day to service them, as a result. I built/ rebuilt British cars and motorcycles as a kid, so I can say that freely...Lucas, anyone?..the only difference I see is rotary vs pushbutton module order of appearance..I bought my OC pieces from a former OC engineer. I rebuilt my OC collection with low noise, high slew rate OP-series opamps, better caps and the noise level is much reduced. Great interview. By the way, that control room must be hot as F**k with all that tube and Class A electronics running all the time.

I have been buying a lot of plugins from Waves and Plugin Alliance, and to finally see them in real person, like the actual analog physical products is amazing! He took the "process" of studio functionality to higher levels, and in dosing so, revealed the true art of recording. I can easily say, now, that I "understand" the nature and purpose of what goes on in a studio .... or at least, the potential, of what COULD happen. Thanks again.

JJP is such a gent.. and comes across as maybe a slightly nervous nutty genius- but you are so gracious- and get him to spill the beans .. and when he drifts off ..wowzers... lovely times where you beautifully bow out and let him cautiously let the cat out of the bag -about bits of one off gear.. wow!! .. you did a fantastic job here to not get too excited??!! in the space ship JJP helios!! Only an hour? How can I watch only an hour? I think I've been spoilt by the 3 hour previous. I won't divulge too much of what went through my mind watching both these vids, except to say it is indeed a world of wonderment, and there is absolutely no denying; music, sound, technology, magic, love, engagement, passion, vision, dedication and perserverance, have all been stirred into the pot and produced a heady mix of everything that's worth doing. Cool studio and storied owner, of course, One item: I have a bunch of Orange County stuff including their version of the ADR Vocal Stressor (Para EQ plus Comp/Limiter) which is very unique and pretty cool sounding, in spite of being full of shyte old 741 op-amps. I think the comment by JJP about who came "first" is incorrect. As far as I know Orange county (in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada) was sued by ADR for copying their stuff. Copy's? They are even built mechanically the same, typical British over-complicated modular mechanical aspect-haha- takes all day to service them, as a result. I built/ rebuilt British cars and motorcycles as a kid, so I can say that freely...Lucas, anyone?..the only difference I see is rotary vs pushbutton module order of appearance..I bought my OC pieces from a former OC engineer. I rebuilt my OC collection with low noise, high slew rate OP-series opamps, better caps and the noise level is much reduced. Great interview. By the way, that control room must be hot as F**k with all that tube and Class A electronics running all the time.
