This is BM's most performed song and is often voted the fan's favorite. Megitsune (in English "vixen") is one of Babymetal's female empowerment songs and when they sing it in front of all female audiences (like the do here) it's amazing. The lyrics compare women to female foxes and actresses. In Japan foxes are known as shape shifters (many cultures think of them as being clever and sly creatures) and the lyrics say that women often have to hide their true feelings and change the face they show to the world, not in a sly way, but for the benefit of others even if they are crying inside. The breakdown is a traditional Japanese tune "Sakura, Sakura" or "Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom", but Su sings "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox). This might indicate that the girls are moving on from from their former selves as Sakura Gakuin school girls. So in the music, lyrics and also in the dance, Japanese traditions and traditional attitudes to women are subverted. The peak of this comes when Su shouts
"Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" or "Maidens should not be underestimated",
and in the video threateningly draws a knife from her microphone or in this concert does a front kick, so she's saying she's capable of dealing with anyone who gets in her way.
Foxes are also associated with Inari, the Japanese god of rice, abundance and now also material success in business. I think linking the "Fox God" to Babymetal is their producer Kobametal having a bit of a joke and what better mascot for a commercial venture.

Great & thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。In a recent interview Su-Metal said (1) This song is mixture of various elements ; very fast but smooth, hard but beautiful etc. (2) The tune and choreo have Japonesque flavor which may attract overseas fans. (3) This is her tuning song because it includes necessary factors for singing in a well-balanced manner. So she always sings Megitsune in rehearsal to confirm her vocal condition. Su actually said "in a sense, it is a song of criterion for me". (source : Tokion Vol.7 2020-12-24)

Su has mentioned that this is her favorite, even though it's a difficult one for her to sing.
She will often sing a bit of this a cappella during sound checks.
Megitsune has been performed live more than any other BABYMETAL song, and frequently tops fan polls for favorite song.
The music video for this song is also one of their very best.
Definitely worth seeing.

@@gombers Just saw my post with the first part missing...geez. I was talking about Andrew Hartley, an author and BM fan who, during the pandemic, started breaking down BM songs. He lived in japan and speaks japanese. He does a full break down of Megitsune that is amazing.

My eyes got watery the first time I heard this song many years ago, and I also couldn't understand why at the moment. It's such an amazing song ❣️ and the all female audience just makes it extra special. I recommend you also check out the music video cause it's a masterpiece as well. Watching BabyMetal perform this song for an all female audience is just awesome. Plain and simple.
It is cool seeing an all female audience at a metal show. But the boys one was awesome too. It was so heavy. The best sounding Babymetal show ever IMO.

@@gombers - i'd recommend other concerts before that one, it sounds great but there is no production. Tokyo Dome first of all, it sounds almost as good as that and it has a great production. There is a spreadsheet on the Babymetal reddit with links to every Babymetal pro-shot concert. The other one i would recommed is 'Metrock 2015' It's on dailymotion in full and it's only 30 minutes. But it'sfantastic the crowd shots are incredible. I was just saying that the boys one was underrated but it's not one of the best except for sound.

saw them at the house of blues in Boston on their tour for the first album...one of the best shows i have ever seen...if you get a chance to see them live it is a must do!!!!!
Babymetal are good at hitting the emotional nerves. Even when you don’t know what they’re saying. This was one of the five Fox festivals. This one was a girls only audience. The other ones also catered for different audiences, including us oldies. Glad you enjoyed this , now I think you should go back to the very beginning. Doki Doki morning , the MV. This was made before their teenage years. Heavy cuteness overload.

Su-metal has a very special and unique ability to be cute and adorable, yet powerful and badass. During one of their BABYMETAL reaction videos, LVT, a female metal singer from the group Mettal Maffia, even talks about this ability that Su-metal has and how this is a very difficult thing to do.🦊🤘
She simply has the range and duality. A strength of a born performer. In so much awe of her presence on that stage no joke. And her vocal talent is unreal.

This was probably their best performance of Megitsune. You can really tell the difference in their performance because the song was specifically meant for this all female audience. The amount of empowerment could be heard in Su-metal's voice how much feeling she put into it. Simply awesome.
You could see in every expression they were thrilled to play this for this crowd. Was this the opening song of the show?

Great reaction, and I appreciate that you look into the meanings of the songs. Megitsune is one of those songs that no matter what else I'm doing, I'll always stop to listen to listen to it if it comes on. As far as Fox Festivals, it was a one-time concert series in 2017, although they did do a similar thing in 2015 with their Apocrypha concert series where they had two shows, Red Mass and Black Mass which were female and male only shows, and tickets were only available to members of their (not) a fan club, The One. The Fox Festivals expanded that idea even further though with the 5 different festivals, some with multiple shows, although the Red Fox and Black Fox were single shows. It all wound up with a final show called the Big Fox Festival, which is an amazingly good concert, but with a kind of somber overtone when you realize it was the last time all three original members would perform together. Nobody knew it at the time, but it was Yuimetal's last time performing with Babymetal due to undisclosed health issues.
Awww damn, sometimes it goes down that way though. I remember when I used to be in a band, the last show we played while not in the ideal mindset, was emotionally probably the best we ever played.

@@gombers As far as we know, and we know very little, she is doing well and is expected to return to the entertainment business, but not with Babymetal. She always wanted to be an actress, so hopefully she gets to fulfill that dream.

This song has been played live by BM more than any other. I'm behind on the exact figures, but it was 260+ a few months ago when the BM podcast did a deep dive into the song. Not surprised you enjoyed it, back in 2014 when most Westerners first heard of them via the meme hit Gimmie Chocolate (I suggest the incredible performance on Colbert's show if you react to that) this was the next thing they would discover. It's a legit metal track but has a great feeling of female empowerment. Be sure to watch the official video at some point - it's unlike anything else they've made and they're super young in it.

Thanks for this reaction, I'm glad finally someone did ! It's strange Babymetal is somehow good at tapping into emotions. I know music is all about emotion and it's even stronger live. But having a great crowd it all amplifies it even more.
Red Fox Festival or the 5 Fox Festival series this was part was the second time Babymetal performed to an all female audience.
The first time was fan-club members only show: Red Mass (the other was all male: Black Mass).
Which was on April 24 2015, the Red Fox Festival was on Jul 19 2017. So it's very rare.
Funny little note: Babymetal girls have mentioned, these shows smell really nice compared to other shows LOL I think this might have been a hint for the male fans as well.

A crowd can really make or break a crowd, so it was really awesome to watch this performance and see the type of energy the crowd brought. It really felt magical.
@@gombers A famous concert (a festival actually) among Babymetal fans is Metrock 2015, it's outside during the day it has a great crowd like this and you can see the crowds.because it's outside in the sun. It's not on RUclips. It used to be really problematic copyright wise. It has become slightly less over time. But I don't think anyone tried to uploaded it on RUclips recently. The most recent was Maximum the Hormone at the same festival which stayed up for a month maybe. Anyway, maybe something to check out some day, if you want to react to it: 'link&sync' probably best.
The Five Fox Festival shows (July - Oct 2017) was the pinnacle of Babymetal in 2017. By the beginning of 2018, Everything had change. Yui was gone and Mikio had passed. Shows are different now.

Before you watch whatever guide you decide to do, may I recommend a couple more songs? You already saw Headbanger live at Legend 1997 - that was the third-to-last song of that concert, and they did special performances of two of their other songs right after it, Akatsuki and BABYMETAL DEATH. That performance of Akatsuki is called the "Unfinished" version (by which they mean acoustic), and it would probably be best to see the normal version of it first.
The normal version of Akatsuki isn't up on the Reactor Resource channel because the performance at Budokan is probably their best one (so far) for reactions, and it doesn't get blocked. You can find it in 1080p on my channel. Similarly, Legend 1997 vids don't get blocked either, so you can just search up Akatsuki unfinished and BABYMETAL DEATH from that show whenever you're ready to watch those.
All right, so Akatsuki normal, then Akatsuki > BABYMETAL DEATH from legend 1997 and THEN the guide. 😎

Oooooh.... You're gonna do the guide.... There are several out there, but the one by Crypticmisery is probably the most info filled one, especially about their early years, and it's also the most recent and up to date one. Yup, love watching the Red Fox concert, because you can see the 3 girls are a lot more playful and smiling more, since its an all girl audience.... And Babymetal was pretty much formed as a group to get girls interested in Metal. The 5 Fox Festival was sorta one time thing.... Only the Fox God knows if they will do something like it again. Have fun exploring more of Babymetal.

@@gombersHope Karate from Download 2016 is one of the performances you are looking into. I know you have done the MV, but the live performance is epic in its crowd interaction..... Or you can start from their first breakout performance at Sonisphere 2014 ..... That was the performance that solidified their status as a legit metal band. I'm sure Babymetal fans can give you all the details of that show.... And the song has a great message, No More Bullying Ever.

The girls were extra cute for the all female audience here. "Megitsune" always tops fan favorite polls and it's their most played live song (240 times and counting!). It's also one of my top favorites and that breakdown is everything!

I find it incredible how Babymetal has this way of connecting with people on an emotional level. I have seen a lot of reaction videos where people hold back the tears (and sometimes they don't). I admit to having the same experience. I think that's an amazing thing.

I guess you know that this is a song about female empowerment sung to an all female crowd. The feeling in the building that night must have been amazing. You can see Su, Yui and Moa seen to be giving even more in this show. What a great night for these three angels.

Great reaction again. I think you found out for yourself or have been told pretty much everything I might have said about this song and this performance at the Red Fox Festival. I don't know if anybody said yet that the breakdown uses the exact melody of a very old and very well known traditional Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).

Great reaction!! Megitsune is such a great song, BABYMETAL at their absolute best, and this song with an all-female crowd feels extra special. The Fox Festivals were a great idea, too bad that they haven't done that again, but they do lots of different stuff. Right now they are doing 10 shows at Budokan (a legendary venue in Japan, think their Madison Square Garden) to celebrate their 10th Anniversary, which is a big deal and a big achievement.
Damn that’s incredible. Part of the reason I chose red fox festival was bc I heard there was an all women attendance and that energy had to have been incredible. I think my emotions said it all 🥲

"Why am I so overwhelmed?"..... I wish I could answer that question myself. When I first fell down the fox hole I was asking myself the same question. The more I tried to find the answer, the deeper into the Fox Hole I went. This band... these girls.... tend to have that affect on some people. You are not alone in that regard. They can have this affect on crusty old farts like me and young women such as yourself. Age does not matter. Race does not matter. Language does not matter. Sexual orientation does not matter. I think it's empathy. People who are affected by Babymetal in this manner tend to be those of us who naturally possess excess (a bad choice of words, because there can never be too much) empathy. Hopefully, we get through this COVID crap and Babymetal can get back out on the road, something we know they are itching to do. I plan on hitting at least 8 shows on the next tour, whenever that may be. Get yourself a ticket, show up early to hang in the crew with the rest of us idiots, and discover the comradery that is the Babymetal fandom.

BabyMetal can overwhelm you at times. It is like a sensory overload and your brain just cant process it all and it almost makes you cry or get light headed.

I believe the term is “aesthetic sensitivity”, which means “the degree to which a person is aware of aesthetic value, as well as their ability to analyze and communicate the properties that make something aesthetically pleasing (meaning attractive to the senses)”, so people who often tear up/get emotional when consuming art that isn’t necessarily sad, typically have a higher aesthetic sensitivity.

Great reaction! Babymetal has a way of bringing out the tears so don't worry if it actually happens. Happy tears or sad tears, it usually happens at some point in your journey. Most of us have been there. You really should do yourself the favor of watching the MV of this as well when you have the chance (no need to react unless you just want to). It is full of great Japanese culture and the girls were still quite young so there is the extra cuteness to make your head explode even more. “Megitsune” is my second favorite BABYMETAL song, second only to “Headbanger”, but I think it might be the best written song if that makes sense, the songs a masterpiece. The breakdown is also brutal and always catches people off guard.
I wish they'd have the pig squeals on the backing track. I miss that from the studio version.

the line translated here as "maidens... shouldn't be underestimated" is perhaps better understood as "where young women are concerned, it'd be regrettable if you were to underestimate us." it's something of a threat lol.
At first you think this might be a gimmick with three random japanese girls, but they are not random at all. Su voice has something special that touches deep.
I would go for Akatsuki next. Or if you do the guide, try to find the new one, the other that has most the views is a bit outdated and biased.

Yeah I agree, I don't know why people suggest to watch the babymetal guides so soon to people who only knows three or four songs. I think you need to be better acquainted to the band to really become interested. Also the guides will make some spoilers here and there.

Us blokes also get told to hide our feelings and expected to "man up" so I can empathise a little with what you are saying, Su must find stoic women to be extra cool because of all the shit women historically, and to this day, have had to endure. On a personal note, this would suck for me because if I were to meet Su, stoic is the last thing I'd be. Ugly-crying and wailing, falling to my knees and shitting my pants is most likely outcome. I don't think Su would find that cool 🦊

I totally relate to Su though about admiring older cool women like that, a lot of characters, etc that I enjoy in media follow these traits. Not bad things to have, but balance I think is always good.

This one's a big fan favorite. IMO, it's the song that's best representative of the band. They riff on a traditional Japanese melody called Sakura Sakura (here's a gorgeous performance of it: ruclips.net/video/JDTp_YQizqE/видео.html ).

RE: the guides. There are 4 now:
1) An Unhelpful Guide to Babymetal. 40 mins. The first one and the funniest. Very informative about the band but very negative and inaccurate about the fans. We try to avoid recommending this one nowadays.
2) Everything You Need To Know About BABYMETAL. 44 mins. A very objective and thorough guide. Not as funny as #1 but more up to date.
3) A Beginner’s Guide to BABYMETAL. 17 mins. A shorter version of #2. For people who just want the basics.
4) An Unhelpful Guide to Babymetal's Backup Dancers. 51 mins. Watch after seeing #2 or #3.
Did you realize, this Red Fox Festival was for female attendees only? This was an all-female crowd! Back in 2017, BABYMETAL did a series of shows with restrictions in terms of who could attend to them. There was one for females only, one for men (with the requirement of wearing corpse paint), one for teenagers, and one for kids and seniors.
Yep! When I did the gold fox festival reaction a few comments mentioned the red fox festival, so I had to seek it out for the next one. Also why I really want to go so bad hahaha

I don't know if they'll do this sort of thing again. They've done it twice. They've had two concerts for girls only plus the NHK appearance was all girls i think. It's kind of interesting i think Su didn't know what to do for the first girls' show. She was all serious but this one she totally changed and was all cute. Or maybe she wasn't feeling well, it was the most lackluster performance i've ever seen her do.
The first one wasn't Red Fox. It had a different name. I could look it up but i'm being lazy. That one had more rules than just girls only. The girls had to dress up like Yui and Moa while the boys had to dress like the Kami Band. Red Fox was part of 'Five Fox Festival' it was 5 days over two weekends. Each day had different rules for who could attend. Five Fox was when Babymetal was at their absolute peak. It was right after Tokyo Dome. Also those are super small shows and in Japan. Super hard to get tickets. They easily fill 20,000 person arenas.
Well one of these days I’m making whatever trek I have to in order to see them live. Really appreciate all this info you provided about the five fox festival, that sounds like a truly incredible moment in their career.
