    Great reaction/analysis, thanks!
Yep, this can be considered a more "normal" song. We don't use much that word because nothing about them is "normal" (according to the cannons of metal, of course). 😁
Su-metal is incredible as a singer but she's also a total performer since she takes part in the choreo when performing live. And about this particular recording, keep in mind she was 15 at the time. This point makes this even more impressive in my opinion. It's been 10 years from that and she has matured in all the aspects and her technique has only improved over the years.
"Road of Resistance" is a proper song to have a good listen to the band... as long you do an actual live performances Because the Kami Band does not appear on studio recordings. Yes, I know it's weird but they are session musicians (the best you han hire) and it's how they work, since all of then have their own projects besides BABYMETAL. The fact is that they consider the live performances as their core business and even referred to their studio work as "business cards". So they need a solid backing band when performing live.
They added a second set of the Kami Band in 2019, so-called "western Kami Band", formed by American musicians. They are currently touring across Europe with BABYMETAL and they are equally impressive, specially (personal bias alert!) their drummer, Anthony Barone (big fan here!)
    Until next time!

I mentioned in my reaction that it's crazy how good they are for how you g they are, especially her.
Haha some people didn't like that I said normal, but for Babymetal this is a more typical metal song than most of their others, according to some fans who have asked me to react to more of their songs. Thank you for confirming.

  • @autohmae

Thanks for this reaction, yes, Su-metal is a very precise singer. She very much takes the time to take in the song as it develops and build a narrative for herself what the song is, when she was a kid this could be many months, like over half a year. When she sings she tries to convey the ideas/emotions of her emmersion as much as possible.
Basically all harsh vocals are uncredited studio recorded/playback live, possibly very much manipulated, a lot of the time they serve as a contrast to the young ladies vocals.

Excellent analysis. Usually singers use a lot of vibrato to cover up pitch, but Su never uses vibrato for that purpose. This may be the pride of a girl who loves to sing more than anyone else.

    • @mcflyjp
      @mcflyjp  Год назад +6

I wouldn't say usually. Vibrato is used to decorate the end of a singing phrase. But yes, she does have pride in what she does.

    • @johnschultz7765
      @johnschultz7765 Год назад +9

Su- was encouraged to sing this song in Japanese Enka style. While her recently changed, just turned 15 voice does not have the classic melodramatic wide vibrato used in Enka singing, she does let her voice ring freely with its wonderfully sweet, narrow, natural vibrato. And one can hear on the inhales just how tight her vocal chords still are from that recent change. This recording was a superb capture of a moment in time and I am grateful that the Producer chose to leave in those artifacts. Even though known for her loud clear belts sans vibrato, Su- has often used vibrato in her singing in that controlled, decorate the end of a phrase manner from this point forward. And from early on she has also been precise in holding notes for their proper length.
I agree with Mr. kitkat, excellent analysis and I look forward to more.

And I am grateful that she has explored other styles, as shown with Akatsuki (unfinished ver.) and more on the last 2 albums. But her core style really shines on the choruses during Monochrome - piano version, yes?

Good reaction and interesting analysis. I think I must have left a lengthy comment under your previous BABYMETAL reaction so YT didn't like it and erased it, so I'll keep this one a lot shorter.
The breakdown uses the melody of a very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). No that was not Su-metal doing the pig squeals - for the most part any screamo or growls are uncredited, in live shows they will be on backing track with additional instruments like synth, piano, strings etc.
'Road of Resistance' is more of a "straight metal" song (it is speed/power metal), the guitar arrangements were by Herman Li and Sam Totman from DragonForce and they played on the studio version.
The Kami Band are the support for all live shows since March 2014 and for a couple of festivals and the encores in a few shows from October 2012 until 2014 ... they do the live performances only, not the studio recordings.

    • @mcflyjp

Lots of interesting stuff here. That's pretty cool Herman Li and Sam Totman did the guitar parts. As a fan of Herman as a person and a guitarist I'm excited to see that one even more now.
It makes sense that wouldnt be her but I wasn't sure if they had backing vocals for that.

@@mcflyjp Herman is a good guy and DragonForce were among the earliest supporters of BABYMETAL. They even smuggled them in to Download UK in 2015 (the organiser had said the year before that BABYMETAL would never play Download) and invited them on stage to play 'Gimme Chocolate' during their set. The crowd they got exceeded the boundaries of the stage they were on - BABYMETAL were on the main stage playing their own set in 2016.
They played 'Road of Resistance' and 'Gimme Chocolate' together at an awards show in London a few days later (there are a couple of poor quality videos on YT of that).

I'm not sure what the point of analysing the vocal track of a 10 year old, heavily processed studio production is, that's ancient history and BM has evolved so much since then. It's a much loved song and captures a moment in BM time, but right now, the music world is in awe of Su's achingly beautiful acoustic version of Monochrome from the Japanese RUclips channel, The First Take. I totally dig your assessment that the innate ability of these ladies to hold an audience captive is phenomenal, and more so because (1) they were very young when they started, (2) they were practically the picture of "anti-metal" cuteness, which should have turned off their primary audience, (3) they did not speak any English when they conquered the international heavy metal scene and (4) it is obvious that they truly ENJOY their silly schtick. For me, nothing could be more "metal" than being able to stomp your feet and keep doing what you enjoy without letting conventional heavymetal purists dictate what you ought or not ought to be doing. Babymetal is the cutest and baddest middle finger to purists of all sorts.
PS.. a kinda "normal" Babymetal sound is Kagerou, but it is more groovy rock than heavy metal... which is maybe why it sounds all too "normal"

    _Sore!_ 🦊🤘🔥
Great follow up to your last reaction.
Fans are enjoying and having so much fun seeing this live every night at Sabaton's Europe Tour, they also announced another Europe headline tour in November, along with the Babyklok Tour, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this song like they did recently in all these concerts, we always love the shanenigans between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown.
Thanks for coming back with this suggestion and one of BM fans favorite song, not exactly a "normal" song, is more like a classic and quintessential song.
This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen" a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
Song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox.
"Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she's doing sound check with this song before live concerts.
The arranger of this song is YuppeMetal and he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drums section, another cool song to check it out.
No, she's not the one doing the pig squeals, no one relevant is credited with the growls and this pig squeals.
The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary:
The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole.
Now you know why we're called "kitsune" (fox) and women are affectionately "megitsune", and we all are called "The One" that's the official fandom name, no wolf here.🦊🤘
Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀
If you wanna know everything about BM you should watch "A BabyMetal Guide" by CrypticMisery, is updated until early 2021 but at least is something to start the basics.

@McFly JP might I point you in the direction of another RUclips channel (not mine haha), but there is an English professor who makes hour long videos breaking down possible translations and meanings in a lot of Babymetal songs, as well as how the choreography matches the story of the song and or the genre and region that a song mixes with metal..Andrew Hartley. If it weren't for him, a lot of the complexity of the meanings and messaging behind their music would have been lost on me and because of his videos I've become much more of a fan. BM plays a bit with Japanese Shinto religion by calling their Metal deity "The Fox God" alluding to the Shinto kami (ghost / spirit / god) Inari whose avatar or personification is the fox. In one scene of this video you can see the red gates called torii of a famous Inari shrine.

Seems like you're still struggling with it -- they aren't looking for approval to try to make metal music or fit into one of the incessant number of subgenres that metal fans insist on classifying music by. They've been making music that a massive amount of people enjoy for nearly half their lives and have already achieved more than 99.999% of the groups of people that decide they want to try to make and perform music others.
They're all good. They'll probably just keep doing whatever they want to do.

Dude relax, never did I say they are performing for the sake of others. Quite the contrary in fact. They are their own genre.
Metal gatekeepers suck so I agree with you.

I like metal, and love their energy, but just don’t click with female vocalists. Unless we’re talking Pat Benatar. 😊
Thanks for the analysis, I always learn something when I watch your videos.

Have you watched my Jinjer Reactions? Her screams sound like no other female vocalist I have heard. Give Jinjer a shot and let me know what you think.

Is Megitsune a "normal" metal to you, sir?

    • @mcflyjp
      @mcflyjp  Год назад

No it is not. It is, however, out of the two songs I have watched from them, the closest to normal metal. Plus, plenty of people who are BabyMetal fans said that this one was as close to a normal song from them as it gets.

@@mcflyjp Interesting (fans describing Megitsune was as close to a normal song). To my ears, Karate would have been the song to suggest. I'm not instigating a war of words here with other fans. Perhaps I'm just tone deaf.
      Thanks for replying

Music is subjective. So some may find certain songs more "normal" than others and others may disagree. I am uneducated as to BM music so I can just go by what I'm being told.
      No worries at all.

Just a suggestion: perhaps you shouldn't call it a reaction video but video analysis, because you're not reacting nearly as much as you are parsing.

It's a reaction. Therefore it is a reaction videos. If you are going to be that particular then more than half of the reaction videos on the internet would not be reaction videos.

@@mcflyjp As you like. But when a "reaction" video is more than four times longer than the video itself, I find it very difficult to believe that fifteen minutes of the "reaction" video is "reaction". You do as you do.

@@Filboid2000 it’s a reaction and video analysis. It can be both.
Have you heard of Knox Hill, Cliff Beats? All are reaction channels that also analyze and breakdown music. Splitting hairs here.
BUT I will add “and analysis” to my titles just for you!
