  • After 1000 miles and many months riding the Thruxton I thought it was time I revisit a video I made when I first purchased the ace. My issues with the bike from the start have all but evaporated and its time I tackled all of my previous concerns.
If you want to buy a Thruxton this is the video for you.

Thanks for sharing this, yes, many years ago but I've only just watched it :-). I was originally looking at a T100 0r T120 but test rode a 2014 Thruxton 900 just out of curiosity. And fell in love. I was worried about my long term comfort as I am 6'1 but you are taller.

It is so funny. I think it is an initial perception we have the first time we ride a Triumph! :) I have a Daytona 675R and honestly the first week, I was very desapointed. But once you know it, once the learning curve is finished, you really fall in love with it. Sometime I am wondering how come one day I was not in love with this bike. Triumph makes special bikes...that's it!

I have had mine for 10 years, I have had nine Hinckley Triumphs both twins and triples since 1996 thru 2016. Things I think need improving for me seat and brakes. I use an air hawk on any rides over 150 miles. In over 9 years I haven't done anything to improve the brakes or suspension, I just ride ride a little slower but still faster than average. The throttle slop can be adjusted, the mirrors are easily swapped out.
I have upped my horsepower from 55 to 85 at the rear wheel. There are a ton of exhaust systems available, I have four. I have drag raced the bike with a 12.8 quarter mile being the fastest and run it at the Bonneville Salt Flats at 140 mph with a fairing and engine mods. Stock top speed is 125 mph for a small guy.
Converting mine from racing and general street riding to a tourer after nine years. Seat, suspension, bars will be changed and adding luggage racks. I believe this bike is an easy 50K bike with proper maintenance.

i've been riding my 2010 thrux for about 4 years. never ever had a problem with starting...with or without fast idle, and i'm in Canada. i do have some upgrades. Predator exhaust probably the biggest. you definitely need the sound. I've also put clubman bars on her for the look mainly. they can get a bit tiring but its not that bad, definitely worth the look

I purchased a 2012 model new i have over 6k on it now. I used to do a lot of commuting on and off military bases with it which means lots of slow traffic and lines of traffic. I had surging issues at very low speeds (less than 15 mph). I was not sure if it was just me or if was a known issue with all the fuel-injected models built off the Bonneville platform.

  • @PeterDad60

Will, I purchased a new 1976 Triumph T140V Bonneville 750 on January 10, 1977. I cafe raced it on the streets of Long Island N.Y. (think Isle of Mann TT roads) and won every race for 10 consecutive years, until I got married in September 1986.
The Triumph Twin's are extremely capable road racers. The motor is strong enough to play but the 4030 chrome molly factory chassis and handling allow them to win!
I took her out in 1992 she was 16 years old and the engine was not fresh having never been rebuilt. That was because she never blew up on me. But anyway I raced against the newest Hot Road Bikes and won against the Kawasaki 1100cc Ninja fuel injected and 1000cc Honda V4 Interceptor also fuel injected.
My bike out handled them and like I said the motor was strong enough to race, sure they had triple my horsepower and another 60 mph on top speed. But they were heavy and handled very sluggish and were not as controllable as my Bonneville.
So what I'm saying even though your bike is a lot heavier than mine don't underestimate the Triumph Twin engine. They are actually more modern than the double overhead cam shaft, four cylinder bikes first invented by an Italian Firm named Rhondine around 1926. Edward Turner penned the father of your engine in 1928.
My Bonneville weighed 395 lbs sans gas when new. My only mods were to remove the seat cushion to sit lower, replace the stock cruiser bars with drag bars (a lot like your bars but one piece). I also removed the mufflers and lost about 40lbs and the 750 then weighed around 365 lbs. I ran the stocdk Dunlap K-70 tires and won on them. I still have my Triumph T140V 750 Bonneville and she sits 20 feet from me as I type this. I'm 66 years old this month and I have nothing to prove, I did that as a young man. I still ride, mostly on a new 2015 Harley-Davidson FLHP Road King Police. That bike has a spring/shock absorber under the leather saddle and is more comfortable than any vehicle on the road including cars.
Good luck with your Thruxton and I hope you still own her when your turn 66 years old. BTW I am considering trading my FLHP for a Thruxton like yours or maybe the 2016 water cooled version because they are around 430 lbs.
    Pete

Thanks for the review, I currently own a Laverda 1000 RGS a big heavy "old school" bike. But am seriously interested in getting Thruxton. They seem sooooo much easier to live with. and the fact your almost expected to change everything I love. Just wish we in England could import some of that warm USA sunshine. Triumph have got a winner with the Thruxton. Knowing UK companies, They'll probably cease production any time now.

If you set the idle a little higher say 1k rpm on the black knob, you won’t need to pull fast idle on start up. Also adjust the throttle cable to take out the slack

Throttles (at least on vintage Hondas!) are supposed to have several millimeters of play before the carbs start to open up. My father's T100 feels very similar (except smoother than my old Hondas).

This production could be five minutes shorter. I bought a Thruxton last week. Looking forward to getting to know it. You nailed it on the charm factor over performance. It's not a sport bike. Science and anecdotal evidence proves time and time again that it's more fun to go fast on something slow than go slow on something fast. Probably better for folks over 30. Slow down and enjoy the ride.

Nice bike!I have a street Triple now, but I am kind of lusting after a Thruxton as a second bike. My wife hates riding on the Street. The passenger seat leaves a lot to be desired.
I'm not 100% sold on a twin though. The sound kind of bugs me. My Street had the same throttle looseness, literally 30 seconds and it was fixed. The mirrors are one of my favorites on the bike.
    Good review, sub'd.

5 minute warmup? Seems a bit extreme. I pull my idle lever to the 1st position for about 45 seconds and it’s good to go from cold. I’ve had to do the same with crotch rockets to let them warm up 45-60 seconds (although the idler is built into those and its automated). Good looking bike though! I like the white and black scheme.

In some states the Law allows you to turn left on a red light because bikes don't trip the circuit to change the light. Of course in every state you can turn right on red, traffic permitting. I'd check with the local LEO.

  • @MartinSage
    @MartinSage 8 лет назад +1

Get a Large Magnet and stick it on the bottom of the engine to help trip the signal lights. I like the end mirrors so when you lane split and get in too tight the mirror hits the car telling you to slow-up/stop😄 Fulling can be improved with mapping. I'm attracted to the larger 2016 1200cc water cooled models as I live in a hot climate and water cooled motors don't overheat like air cooled motors. Sure, the oil cooler helps but they still get hot and that screws with the ease in shifting gears as well as the longevity of the motor.

    • @bookzoo

+TheAtomicWaffle- That is an ACE cafe model it may have a different exhaust. Possibly Arrow full exhaust that Triumph sells through dealerships. Other than that mechanically the same they were serialized and do have a different paint and decal job. The MY16 models were a fairly complete redesign with traction control, ABS, and a larger 1200cc engine up from the 865cc of the MY15 and before.

+Will G. i read that its an issue within the engine. I rented a thruxton and rode for a few hundred miles and noticed that if you don't hold the clutch and get the revolutions up a bit it will kinda jump and jerk a little. could be that it was a rental bike and not taken care of. idk just thoughts, but appreciate you taking the time to make this video! super informative and a great research tool. I'm in Hawaii and just spent 12 hours on a Thruxton ACE rental. This thing does nothing well other than look cool. Bad brakes, chaffing seat, twitchy cornering, weak suspension, poor acceleration, hard to read gauges, no engine character, and a sticky kickstand make for a neutered and moped-like ride. The styling makes a promise the mechanicals can't fulfill. If not for the ridiculous price, it would make a good starter bike. Even an SV650 or a Monster 696 would be a better choice.

I'm almost at 1000 miles on my used 2013 thrux, and I'm NOT in love with this bike. Granted my previous bike was a CBR600 and was a beast out the box, my thruxton rides like shit in comparison. You have to do so much in aftermarket mods to even come close to a race bike, this is a cafe racer right? AIS removal, air box removal, exhaust system replacement, literally $1000s in aftermarket. I've been riding for over 10 yrs and I've stalled on this thruxton more than any. This bike is about looks not performance, kinda like a really hot chick that's terrible in bed. Kinda like when woody told wesley, you'd rather look good and lose than look bad and win. thanks for the video but we have very different opinions on this bike, sorry for wanting my bike to look good and ride even better. You're right though, like a hot chick, I get a lot of looks and compliments on this bike but that's not my priority. I wont recommend this bike to anyone until Triumph sends me an exhaust that doesnt sound like a sewing machine ;)
My ego is in check, so I'm willing to admit, purchasing this bike was a but of mistake. Looks good, runs like shit(stock).
