  • Just some SFU riffs on the GX130C boosted with an SD-1. Mics are a Heil PR20 on a G12T-75 (dark) and a GLS Audio ES-57 on a V30 (bright) blended together. Guitar is a Jackson RR5 with JB a in the bridge.

    My uncle has one and it's loud as hell. He's a drummer and I jam with him a lot. I wear earplugs and never stand in front of this thing. But it does rock. It's not the greatest sounding amp in the world, not the warmest, but if you need some real crunch and punch it totally delivers the goods. When I play my Schecter with a DiMarzio Steve's Special Bridge and Air Norton neck it totally rules.

      Yeah, it definitely gets quite loud. For heavy sounds, it is definitely one of the better solid state options out there.

    I swear this is the solid state 5150/6505. I have two and it sucks that both of them have the chorus effect randomly turn on at times but de-oxit has helped a bit. People need to clear their storage units and put more of em on the used market.

      Yeah, a lot of people seem to be of the same opinion. You might still be able to get the switches too. Replacing them is pretty easy if you can solder.

    The sound of death metal. Allen West was gifted at these simple death metal riffs. Neither Obituary nor SFU has been the same since he left them both.

      SO, I may be crazy saying this but I think I like it more than my peavey 5150.. or maybe I'm just in love with it like I always am with new gear. But hey $65 vs. A $1500-2000 OG 5150, I'd pick the Crate all day.

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  2 года назад +2

      @@shaneaintit2171 Depending on where your musical tastes lie, that could certainly be believable. Especially for $65. Hell, any 100+ watt head for $65 is a killer deal. The nice thing with the GX130C is that it really doesn't need a boost either, it's pretty sufficiently tight as is.

    I've grown to love your channel this day, subbed!
    As a Metal Guitarist, I've grown to love these out of production amps.
    Definitely My wish list includes.
    Crate (Either a GX130c or a GT200)
    Hughes and Kettner Switchblade
    Mesa Dual Recto
    Peavy 3120 (Sorry 6505 & 5150 but the Underdog takes the cake)
    Couple of questions man on this one,
    1. Is this type of gain straight from the amp? No boost? If so, Love this! Brutal.
    2. Which one is better? The GX130C or the GT200?
    Thanks!

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  2 года назад +3

      Wow, thank you so much! I am glad that you enjoy the videos. I agree that it is really fun to discover these older amps. To answer your questions. In this clip, the amp is boosted with a Boss SD-1. It helps tighten up the low end. Between the GX130C and the GT200, it's a tough call. The GX is darker overall and the "shape" knob allows for greater versatility of tones. The GT200 is way brighter and the tube preamp helps with the feel and sag. Running different tube types can allow for some different types of tones and gain structure too. Can't really go wrong either way.

    Tracked one down, should come today. Have you ever tried a metal zone through yours for a cannibal corpse tone? I’ve got a Maxon st9 pro plus super tube that I’m going to try running through it.

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  2 года назад

      Nice, congratulations! I haven't run a Metal Zone into mine. I know people like to use them as a boost pedal (level max, gain off) but I haven't really had any luck doing that. The Boss SD-1 works great for tightening it when necessary.

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  Год назад

      Thanks! The 130s are kind of all over the place price wise. If I remember correctly, I got mine for around $300 (shipped) and was quite happy with that. Sometimes, you'll see them for stupid high prices, but other times they're cheap. The combo version usually sells for less too so that is an option. Realistically, I think $3-500 is probably fair. At the end of the day, these are 30 year old cheap solid state amps. Don't spend $1000 on one.

    • @krafgeetar4013
      @krafgeetar4013 Год назад

      @@low_e_music yeah I’ve noticed it is weird. Will remember that. Have you ever played through a Stealth 100 or 50? Very interested in one of those or possibly an Excalibur GX900H. Opinion on either of those?

Haven't played the Excalibur either but a buddy of mine has one that he gigged with for years and it always sounded great.

  • @ragingskeptic9753
    @ragingskeptic9753 2 года назад

    I had one of these in the day. It was one of the loudest amps I ever owned, but I never could get the tone I was after. It was muddier than the Mississippi in the low end, and raspy and shrill on the top. It was a good beginner amp 25 years ago, but I’d never gig with it now. This was a good amp for classic rock, but not for metal.

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn't call the amp muddy, definitely dark though. A boost in front really helps. It is a great metal amp too, various bands used it back in the 90s, probably most famously Cannibal Corpse.

    • @ragingskeptic9753
      @ragingskeptic9753 2 года назад

      @@low_e_music I would. It sounded more like a muddled fuzz than a distortion. Definitely not a high gain amp. I play djent/metalcore/doom/etc., and this amp certainly wouldn’t foot the bill for those styles. My Blackstar and my Bugera do nicely. If the GX130C works for you, then by all means have at it. I just noticed a couple people talking about buying one, and I want them to know what to realistically expect.

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  2 года назад +1

      @@ragingskeptic9753 Maybe the one you had was broken or something. It's definitely not the be all end all metal amp but to say it's not a high gain amp is totally ridiculous and false. Is it my first choice for super high gain? No, my 3120 would probably take that spot. It more than gets the job done though and sounds pretty good doing it, especially for a 30 year old solid state. To each their own though.
