I was singing some 70s pop music while I was driving around the other day, when I looked in the rear-view mirror and-I'll be damned if there wasn't Michael McDonald sitting in the backseat, singing harmony! MAN, that guy is everywhere!
I saw him as a back up singer with The Dan Of Steel in the Spring of 1974 LIVE in COW-lumbus, Ohio before Steely Dan stopped touring for 20 plus years. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was a part of that tour as well! Great Show doesn't really do justice...but what a Great Show! 😉
These sessions allow us to realize that our musical heroes are just normal, but were extraordinarily driven to their craft. What a gift to be able to hear these artists in their own words.
Speaking and singing come from a different place. One from the throat, the other from the diaphragm. The differences aren't always as pronounced in every singer, but they're certainly there.
@@boxvango9021 Exactly. We have different vocal chords that we use for speech vs. singing, in fact. So our singing voices can sound wildly different from our speech.
When I listen to the Sirius 80s channel, it seems I hear Michael’s unmistakable voice on almost every song, either in the lead or background. One of the greatest talents ever.
My absolute favorite part of that "making of" Aja is Donald playing the isolated tracks of Michael's voice in Peg and apologizing. "Sorry Michael." LOL of all time!!
Saw Michael playing with the Doobies in Abbotsford, BC, in 23', can still belt it out, amazing, what a God given voice. Such great stories, GREAT interview, hope there's more coming!
This is gold. McDonald randomly encountering his own parody while he's peaking on the strongest sweet sticky stuff he's smoked in a long time (ever?)... And he's freaking out...
Great piece. Micheal McDonald singing backup on Christopher Cross songs simply cements that he is the official godfather and inventor of our beloved term 'yaught rock'. You can't find a better crossover until McDonald graciously does a bit on Fallon called something like 'three Michael McDonalds'. That wasn't a yaught. That was a suez canal shipper, too great for even the Panama canal. God bless you, Michael McDonald, you are an American treasure!
Great clip. I love his collaboration with Patti LaBell. I remember when I got a Dobbie Brothers album as a kid and I opened the sleeve and there was a picture of a Doobie and not knowing what it was but was fascinated by it! Good old days!
That skit is great, but the story makes it even better. It's interesting hearing the work involved in songs and that it's not as easy as they make it sound in the finished product. I've always loved his voice.
Everytime you're near, Everytime I see you smile, Hear your "hello", Saying you can only stay a while, And I know that it's hard for you, To say the things that we both know are true, But tell me how come, I keep forgettin'
I worked at Big 5 Sporting Goods for a couple years in college. As a music fan and someone who always paid attention to what was playing I noticed that any time one of Michaels songs came on the radio, shoppers and workers alike would be singing along.
Michael. It is so funny that you said you can’t sing those harmonies but you have one of the most distinct voices of anyone out there You were my favorite singers of the doobie brothers
Priceless. Saw that skit when I was a kid and always wondered how SCTV got the idea to do that. Dave Thomas (of the Bob/Doug McKenzie characters) has a brother Ian who is a long time veteran of the Canadian music scene and contributed to SCTV's production. And would make a fine interview, hint. 🙂
Many years ago I was at a restaurant with my elderly aunt who was also hard of hearing. Michael McDonald and his family were at a table next to us. I was trying to tell her the guy next to us was famous but she couldn't quite understand. I think he noticed me making the effort but probably a normal occurrence for him.
It happened to me watching Star Trek the Next Generation on shrooms. Worf kept passing out to make scene changes, but I thought I was Worf so I thought I was in the TV.... it's hard to explain.
Even as talented as Micheal McDonald AND rick are, all i can think of while watching this is how these 2 guys both have great hair. Still. Congrats guys
I hope that catalogues like yours last forever. I don’t trust big corporations like Google/RUclips to 1) stay and 2do the right thing. We need an open source platform to continue this in perpetuity.
A band I was in had a gig playing dozens of corporate parties at a banquet facility one December. These would be Thursday through Sunday, and they had other events, during the week, so we'd load out on Sunday night and load back in Thursday. The lead singer and I would pass the load-out time singing Christmas songs in a Michael McDonald impression. One example was, in the tempo and feel of What A Fool Believes, "Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree...". Dunno about anyone else, but we had a blast.
Rick Beato Interviewing Rick Beato is the collab we needed
Very similar. Could be brothers

The fact that Michael discovered the skit while high off his what-not is everything! Such a funny story.

The other day, while I was singing in the shower….You’re not gonna believe this….
He's so humble! His vocals on Peg are absolutely crazy and they still haunt me to this day!
No Autotune either!

It's hard to believe he is so humble. He doesn't know he is pretty much better than everyone else!

These sessions allow us to realize that our musical heroes are just normal, but were extraordinarily driven to their craft. What a gift to be able to hear these artists in their own words.
One of my most favorite SCTV skits ever. Michael's story about first seeing it on TV while doobed up is hilarious.😂
SCTV was AMAZING!!!
His speaking voice vs his singing voice still fascinates me to this day.
Like Gomer Pyle…

One of the greatest male voices ever IMO. Love MM.

I was in high school then. I didn’t know who he was. But I knew his voice was everywhere!!!
His voice is even more ubiquitous on Sirius' Yacht Rock channel.
@@omnipop4936 He's "The KING of Yacht Rock"! There's a documentary on Yacht Rock on HBO that I watched last night, good stuff!

A fantastic interview with Mr. McDonald. Well spoken, and he could sing harmonies like people would not believe.

What a fantastic bloke, so natural.
Wow! Thank you Rick 🙏
I went to search for the old SCTV video on RUclips while watching this one. I typed R-I-C....and it auto-completed Rick Moranis Michael McDonald. LOL
I actually saw the episode when it first came out😂

2 singers I love to hear are McDonald, and Greg Lake. Quality.
Would add Kenny Loggins, he's got chops.
Of course Rick Moranis apologized. He's Canadian. 😎😁
Right?
"OK...see ya'!"
I think most people are just jealous of his talent
And personality
We love you Michael
On top of a great interview, I have to say that this video was *really* well recorded and shot. The audio and lighting were both fantastic.
Love Michael! This was a great interview. Saw him with Doobies a couple years ago. This clip is a riot. 😂❤
I’m currently listening to Michael’s audiobook “What A Fool Believes”. Great biography of his music career and his life.
Oh, come on Rick, confess you just put on some glasses and pretend you're this "Michael McDonald" guy xDDD
If you haven't seen the full interview that Rick did with Michael, you need to go back and watch it. You won't be disappointed

That smoking pot story was absolutely hilarious, I’ve actually been there myself before.
Michael also sang on Christopher’s track, “I Really Don’t Know Anymore,” from that album.
I love this story so much.

I love SCTV! I subscribed just now. I thought I was on your main channel already
Rick tries to keep it clean and avoid the drug talk.
The fact he let it slide for a Doobie Brother is great.
I’m glad Rick had Michael wear glasses for this interview
The "Camp Michael Mcdonald" skit from Conan O'Brian is exceptional as well
You two could pass for brothers with those hair styles
I am sorry because I know what it's like to freak out on weed, but the Rick Moranis story is absolutely hilarious. What a trip that must have been.
