  • We repair a Crate Vintage Club 50 guitar amp. Not an easy repair. A full recap and quite a few other parts needed to be replaced in this amp. This amp has a monstrous gain channel and is incredibly loud. It's 30 years old so well in need of a recap.

    I have a couple of mates who have both used Crate amps in anger as it were. They rate them very highly both on sound and reliability. This one you've serviced sounds great especially with the 12AU7 substituting for the 12AX7. Your customer should be a very happy chappie ..

      I know where a V 5212 is right now in really good overall condition for $250..but if I show him $190 cash i bet he would take it...wasn't sure how these amps sound but this is probably close enough. I believe it's a 2-12" model.

    At 3:40, that black module is an optoisolator, probably used for channel switching, or effects like a switchable gain boost.

      Hello, yes, I ended up changing all of them. Amp sounded much better. Well at least the clean channel did. Take care.

    12AU7 sounds really sweet. Good thinking especially for a reggae guy I would think. Hope he likes it.

    I did a total rebuild. Sounded great. The el84 on some are directly grounded on the cathode. I biased mine to 32 watts

    i hv one of these amps and idk what the deal is, but mine has nowhere near that much gain!! DAMM that sounded massive! Wish my gain channel snded that good. BTW its a good idea to run a small fan behind the combos. Also, mark knophler endorsed these. There is a vid from 1995 where he has two of them on stage.

      Hello. I must admit, the amount of gain on this one surprised me, as it's called a VINTAGE Club 50. It's strange that yours doesn't have the same. That's good info on Mark Knophler . I never knew he had used Crate Amps. I will check that out. Thanks for watching and take care.

    Love your video's! The blue electrolytic you replaced was originally 10.000uF instead of 1.000uF. I know I'm late with my comment ;).

      Hello Mark, thank you. I will have to re watch the video and check the schematic. Thanks for pointing that out. Take care.

      Hi, I haven't checked the schematic myself. I saw the 10.000uF on the video, so I could be wrong of course. Cheers!!@@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher

    Those v- and vc- series crates are very dirty birdies, not for people who demand high headroom, but they sound great

    The problem with opto isolators for switching is that they never really are all the way off. Soma little bit of signal is always going to get through.Soldanos do the same thing.

    I have one of these amps and when it gets warm I start getting audio cutout and static for some time even after it is turned off - it was suggested it could be a bad EL-84 - (or was that EL-34 - I'll doubecheck) - is it a ton of pain to replace these? I don't know much about biasing - I do know nwough to like leave it unplugged for a month before working on it - LOL

    • @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
      @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher  6 дней назад

      Hell Russ. They are EL84s on this one. I don't think that will be a tube. Let mew know how you get on with it. Take care.

    how do you discharge the caps before pulling the board?

    • @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
      @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher  3 месяца назад +1

      Hello. Go to pi 7 on any of the output tubes. check from pin 7 to ground to see if there is any voltage in the caps. If there is then you need to use a resistor to discharge them. Thanks for watching and take care.

    Stupidly high plate voltage on those el84s, and biased close to 100% as well. Do you think this is why they call it a club 50?

    • @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher

      Hello Mark. You could well be right. It was a really loud amp. Thanks for watching and take care.

      It's possible. I owned a Traynor YBA1, B as in Bass.
      The thing had 2x EL34s, but ran 60w and had a Hammond tranny in it that could handle any load down to 4ohm on the one tap it had. They were intended as rental amps & Traynor got tired of replacing OTs.
      Sounded practically identical to a V4B if you left the deep switch on the Ampeg off.
      Doesn't sound right at first, but it all checks out. Stupid move selling that, btw.
