Probably because it was in the contract with the estate company.

What a horrible person. Whenever you need to hire a person/company for any reason, make sure they are licensed snd bonded.

In my state, if that car is in an accident, the parent's estate could be sued since the car is still registered in her mother's name.
Always verify that the Dept. of Motor Vehicles transfers the title to the new owner when you sell a car, removing your liability.

There are reputable estate sale companies. Do your due diligence before signing any agreement.

I found out years later that a man I worked for in my early 20's did the same thing to someone. It wasn't an estate sale, but a man going out of business that hired the guy I was working for to auction items off. NOT OKAY!
