      @@77joshua so fun fact. I didn't lol>
      I met with multiple surgeons and my range of motion is semi ok? But it is because of hundreds of hours of physiotherapy and laser treatments. But it is indeed still partially dislocated.
      So they gave me mulitple options.
      1. leave it alone as it is not painful at the moment and I can still use it about 70% fully.
      2. Reattempt the original Surgery
      3. Partial Fusion
      4. Full Fusion
      Because it is still semi ok-ish, the doctors cannot guarantee if I will have have the same range of motion if I do a partial fusion. So for now, we do scans every 8 months to check on it and when/if the time comes - we will perform the partial fusion then

      @@joeallen6340 Thats cool you have the option to keep an eye on it. My doc said he tells people to live with it until the pain becomes unbearable. Usually about 12-15 years post injury and THEN recommends the surgery. Which is what happened for me. I got the surgery 15 years post injury because just one month....it became realllllly painful all of a sudden. All the time. Sounds like you got a good routine. If the time comes, have no worries. Life is good. And you'll be back to life just the same as before.

    I have a weak painful wrist due to several past injuries that I didn't take the time to heal because I felt I was to busy at the time. Crooked bones have wore out some joints. Retired now, I live in a lot of pain and can't even open a car door or a beer with it. It's useless. My hand surgeon is running out of options and is suggesting this, so I'm researching. Thanks for the video. I’m based in the uk so I’m in the process of finding out what options I have with the NHS ( this is the free service we get in the uk). If they don’t offer this then I will probably have to pay for private surgery else where. STT Arthritis is my diagnosis.
    I surf most days so very insightful to see what range of movement you have to see if it will effect my pop ups on the surfboard as well as HIIT and body weight workouts.

      Ah you'll adjust just fine! Your fingers will be able to extend well enough you can get a good stance on your hands or obviously place a fist on the board. There's been a couple moments where it was kind of discouraging but I'm all good and trust you'll be just fine as well. Won't even think about it after youve spent some weeks on your board. I think the benefits of living without pain will far outweigh the lack of mobility after the surgery and you'll be right back to surfing

Considering my options now because I’m in soo much discomfort. 4cf is very tempting after being in discomfort and soo much pain but I’m only 23 so it’s a big commitment . 4cf appears superior to prc because the lunate remains in with the radius slowing arthritis.

      @@johnkevinstewart yea I didnt like that option either with the PRC. It's not natural curvature. I asked my surgeon about that and the rapid degeneration of cartilage due to the capitate and that sharp angle now sitting in the fossa. He told me that yes degeneration/arthritis happens and visible via x-ray but it does not present in pain to the patient and is very tolerable. BUUTTT i wasn't wanting to risk that. And ive only seen one or two videos of other people with a PRC maybe a year or two after their surgery. So how long is it good for? 3 or 5 years before the arthritis is obviously noticeable and back to pain? Not long enough for me haha. But yea if you decide for the 4cr I REALLY trust you'll enjoy not being in pain and adapt to everything without even thinking about it. He only fused and used screws ( I dont remember how many )....I'm aware there is a circular plate that some surgeons may use to join the 4 bones together but my surgeon simply used screws. A few years ago I fractured my scaphoid and i went to the dr and put it a cost for months and it healed. Now finding out about 6 years later my blood supply has been pinched in there and my scaphoid has developed necrosis. I do not want to remove my bone. I’m waiting to hear back to see if a bone graft is possible. I’m a welder and my job is physically demanding and I don’t want to lose mobility in my wrist.

    • @77joshua
      @77joshua  3 месяца назад

      I hear you. I'm curious if they will try the bone graft. I asked my surgeon about it but my scaphoid was dead for too long and I had necrosis in mine. So the fusion was the only option. I grew up a carpenter and am physically active and I have adapted to everything perfectly and I know you would be able to adapt and continue welding. I've done some welding with stick and wire fed (definitely not my career) but I can confidently say you will be able to continue your career and especially without pain. You CAN wait a few years until the arthritis sets in like me. It was about 15 years AFTER my scaphoid was broken and died that I finally got the surgery. Because the arthritis became so bad. I currently have about 60 degrees of motion in my wrist

      @@aaronwoodard4413 honestly, that second opinion will be where you can make your decision. Most likely theyll order an MRI to find out if the bone is dead. I asked about the 3D printed as well, my surgeon said they had very little success rates with it. But if you want to refrain from getting the surgery for a few more years, typically you can go 12-15 years before the arthritis REALLY sets in and you'll definitely want the surgery before the arthritis spreads to all the other joints in the hand bones. And mostly because thats about the time it gets extra painful. My pain was manageable until my 15th year post injury

Usually a broken bone is 6 weeks to heal but with my a 4 corner fusion its 8-10 weeks. Probably just the pattern of hardware/metal installed for your body to heal around those pieces

      Starting out I didn't do much accept just lived my daily life because it was kind of odd getting the cast off and having limited range of motion. After a month or so I started to do simple wrist stretches on the floor. I'm curious, did they put screws in your 4CF or did they put a plate in your wrist?? I apologize for the delayed response

    Thanks for sharing this! Super helpful to hear about your experience. I’m having to go thru a mid-carpal fusion myself and am concern with range of motion post-op. Did you have to go thru a lot of physical therapy to get to where you are in this video?

    • @77joshua
      @77joshua  Год назад

      Actually, I never used a physical therapist. I did my own stretches. Wasn't anything intense, just getting the tendons and ligaments back to stretching and mobile due to being in a cast for 8 weeks...got a little stiff. Don't get me wrong, the fusion is obviously going to limit your range of motion. But when the cast first comes off, your tendons and ligaments are gonna be a little stubborn and you'll probably feel it.
      My grip strength was only about 70% of what it used to be for about 4 weeks but I gained full grip strength at about week 5 or 6. For me....I just did what made sense to me that any physical therapist would have done anyways. Some stretches to get the tendons and ligaments back to normal...no crazy unique technique...just some basic flex, extend, medial and lateral movements. And working out my regular workout routine got my strength back. After some time of your basic daily routine you will get your strength back as well. Good luck with your recovery!!

    Thanks for this post! It helps somewhat to calm my nerves, as I will be having a wrist scaphoid excision and four corner fusion....question: how long was your hand swollen right after surgery and then how long before the cast was put on? and do you think i could take a flight 16 days post surgery? and finally how long was cast on, then PT? total time to heal?

    • @77joshua
      @77joshua  3 месяца назад +1

      It was swollen for a couple weeks. I woke up out of surgery with a cast on. It'll be the same for you. I had my cast on for 8 weeks. The doc said it did have the potential for 10 weeks, dependent on healing progress but I just had mine for 8 weeks. 16 days after the surgery? Oh yea absolutely. That'll be plenty of time to fly, youre good. If it was abdominal surgery, I think its 10-14 days that you wouldnt want to fly but for your wrist surgery, you're fine to fly after 16 days. I did my own PT for a couple months just randomly and on my own time. As soon as my cast came off I was back to working out and doing everything I ever did. I was cautious not to be too strenuous on it but I'd say maybe2-3 months to have full strength back in my wrist.

    Hi Josh, I had a similar wrist surgery 7 weeks ago. It involved taking out to wrist bones and putting in 2 screws. How long did it take you to get over the surgical pain? Again, it’s only been 7 weeks for me and I am now in a removable cast. There is no bone-on-bone pain. But it smarts when I move my wrist because of the surgery. At the last x-ray they said the bone needed to finish hardening around the screws. They said it takes about 3 months for that to happen, but that it’s already healing nicely.

      Hi there, my pain resided quickly after the surgery. I wouldn't say I had pain after the cast came off other than just some discomfort of getting flexibility (at least as much as I could with the wrist fused). There was a couple times when working out that I felt a small pinch but that quickly faded within a couple weeks. I'm living pain free and don't have any pain to speak of. Hope your recovery goes well!

      Oh dang, that was 4 days ago. How are you feeling now? I didn't use a cold compress cuz I was obviously in a cast so i'm not sure how to get a cold contact there. But I was prescribed 2 weeks of pain pills. I took those daily until I ran out. I didn't experience any pain after those 2 weeks were up. So I hope they give you a prescription during those first few weeks. But a bricklayer? oh no problem. You'll have no problems at all. I updated two floors in two separate houses in July (I grew up in construction). Actually, as soon as I got my cast off i was back to working out and doing everything per usual. You'll be just fine I promise!

      @@adamcunnew3741 oh dang. yea very similar story man. Yea now that I think about it I did have swelling in my fingers for a week i think? I never iced them. It just eventually went down. It sounds like youve had more swelling and bruising than I did. I remember they gave me something else for the constipation too haha.. Oh yea absolutely. To be honest, I didn't even go to physical therapy. I had to fly out of country and had my cast cut off that morning, then was on the plane the next morning. Immediately went back to working out. The first couple weeks it seemed like there was a ever so slightest pinching feeling but went away very soon. The range of motion of my wrist has not changed hardly AT ALL since i got the cast off. Maybe 5degrees improvement. But the limitation of extending the hand up due to the fusion just is what it is. The unfortunate part of a scaphoid non-union. But yes absolutely you'll be back to work in no time. With my experience of the surgery....if I was still working construction....I still would have been back to work immediately after the cast came off. I actually moved states on the 6th week of having the cast on. I literally lifted and moved everything with the cast on without any issues or complications haha.

    • @77joshua
      @77joshua  Год назад

      Oh also....just so you're aware...your grip strength will be diminished for about 4 weeks. That's how it was for me. Maybe about 70% for those first 4 weeks but back to full grip strength around week 5 or 6. Getting back to work might be a little strange getting used to at first but you'll be fully capable and won't even think about your wrist after about month 2 or 3 of your cast being off. I know how important your hands are in a trade skill like brick laying but I have full confidence you're going to be just fine when the cast comes off and you'll adapt very, very quickly

    Heyy man ! I have the same problem, fractured my scaphoid 10 years ago, had a bone graft 5 years ago but non union. Now I have some discomfort and moderate pain for pushing exercises but fine with pulling. Some mild pain when at rest but nothing unbearable for now. I wonder if I should get the surgery to fuse it or wait until it becomes really disabling or unbearable for everyday tasks. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    • @77joshua
      @77joshua  Год назад +1

      I hear ya man. I fractured mine about 15 years ago. The surgeon told me the window for that injury to become unbearable for people is 12-15 years. There's a point where it just became a dull aching pain at ALL times and it even woke me up in the middle of the night because it was so bad. Definitely was not working out with it hurting that bad. That happens because arthritis finally sets in. BUT he told me the more time that people put it off, the more likely arthritis will spread from the scaphoid over to the other joints/bones in the wrist. With the moderate pain you have with pushing exercises it sounds like youre in that window of time that would be good to get the surgery before arthritis spreads to the other areas in the wrist. Maybe get it checked out, a good ortho surgeon will be able to see arthritis in the x-ray and be able to tell you if you can put it off for a couple more years or now is a good time. You're pretty close to wanting to get the surgery brother.
