    Some trivia here: this punk song was done almost as a joke (Freddie hated Punk and they had some altercation with Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious once). It's a Roger Taylor song but is Freddie that's singing for the most part, faking to be (almost) out of tune; also the obnoxious distortion is done on purpose. It's the only punk song Queen ever recorded. It was meant to be included in the album with the same name (two albums prior) but it wasn't finished yet and probably they thought it wasn't very "Queenesque" so they included it in News of the World instead. In some live shows Freddie destroyed things and went mad on stage during this song just to stay in character.
    The ending is pure genius. Hahaha.
    Apologies for my bad English. :)

    Freddy had a not so freindly confrontation with Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols where Sid insulted Freddie and Freddie threw Sid out of the studio, I think Queen recdorded this song to show Sid what the punk sound could sound like if it had Brains , and Talent behind it

  • @Sneak65
    @Sneak65 5 лет назад +60

    The song begins in your face and then proceeds to relentlessly pummel you with sound for almost 4 minutes. This was indeed Queen's response to punk. The album was actually being recorded in the same studio at the same time that the Sex Pistols were recording the now iconic punk rock album Never Mind the Bollocks. There is a famous story about Sid Viscous walking into the studio where Queen was recording and asking the band if they had managed to bring ballet to the masses yet. Freddie responded by calling Sid Simon Ferocious. A dustup occurred that resulted in Freddie escorting Sid out of the studio by his collar.

      Queen indirectly exposed the Sex Pistols to the world. The Pistols weren't originally booked for the infamous Bill Grundy programme. Queen cancelled at the last minute and Rotten and co. stood in for them. The rest is history.

I don't want to repeat what others have already written about it being Freddie singing lead etc, but I will say this is one of my favorite Queen songs. Thanks for reacting to it, now you need to flip things and react to "Get Down Make Love", there is no Queen song you can go wrong with.

      suzi I’m a huge punk fan but didn’t live through the era - well, not old enough to know anything, born in 76 - but when he said “this was a precursor”, I was like, “Son, we need to sit down ...” lol. Nu Wave, straight edge and hardcore started to get popular in the early 80s tho. Most of what we’d classify as punk was over by 80/81. Then you get the pop punk stuff of present day and it gets murky. Some don’t consider it punk at all and others will argue to their last breath groups like Green Day are as punk as The Ramones and Sex Pistols.

    • @Suzismymom
      @Suzismymom 5 лет назад +4

      @@DonnaCPunk I gotta disagree with one thing you said, "not old enough to know anything" lol You may have been born too late to be there, but just from your comment it's obvious you definitely know what you're talking about! I was just lucky enough to turn 17 in '77 and to live close enough to NYC to be able to drive to CBGB's and Max's Kansas City 3 or 4 times a week and see pretty much most every punk band that came thru the clubs. It was a magical time, a lot of the local bands at the time (Dead Boys, Ramones, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, Richard Hell, Blondie, I could go on and on) would hang out at the clubs and back then, everybody knew everybody. It was a scene like no other. If you saw the movie CBGB's so much of that was real, in fact the Dead Boys show in the movie was set on a night I was there and I spent plenty of time hanging with the guys in a lot of the bands. I was even staying at the Chelsea Hotel when Sid and Nancy were living there. Best days of my life!
      And yeah, by the '80's it was pretty much over as New Wave and corporate radio and record labels ruined everything. I did get to play at CB's once, I sang in a band but we were a NJ band, by then the scene in NYC was over but I wanted to play at least once at CB's. Those were the days, that's for sure!

    So there is an interesting history behind this song, as you know Queen's 3rd album was titled Sheer Heart Attack. This song was written by Roger for that album, but wasn't complete, so it didn't make an appearance until News Of The World (6th album). The interesting thing about this song to me is that Roger Taylor is the one playing the rhythm guitar; Brian helped some with lead. Also, John Deacon is not in this track either, Roger is playing all the instruments! Both Freddie and Roger sing on this track.

    Hi A & A, great choice. I LOVE this song. Loved watching your reactions, too.
    I’m sure other posters have already filled you in on this little piece of proto-punk perfection.
    Released in 77, sure, but Roger wrote this in 74, for the Sheer Heart Attack album, so it was waaaaay ahead of its time.
    TBH, while I love many a Queen anthem and ballad, I could have done with more of this style in the years that followed. A & A, compare this with Fight from the Inside, from the same album, News of the World. It’s Roger’s slap-down of punk’s pretensions. Others will no doubt relate the hilarious story of Freddie throwing Sid Vicious out of the NOTW studio.
    Also from Queen’s stripped-down, back-to-basics News of the World, is the sublime ‘It’s Late’ - a showcase of all that Queen do best: shredding guitar, soul-stirring harmonies, love, longing, sex, betrayal - poetry.
    NOTW also includes the raw sex of Get Down, Make Love; Deacy’s lovely ‘Spread your Wings’ and one of Freddie’s finest, ‘Melancholy Blues’. What incredible range Queen show, just in the songs mentioned in this post. If I had to choose just one Queen album, NOTW would be it.
    The singer? Freddie with a heavy dose of Roger.

    Defo Freddie in the main parts with Roger duetting in parts. It's a Roger punk (pre punk if you will). Somebody commented it was written for Sheer Heart Attack but not finished which is correct. Are we to say Queen invented Punk music lol. How about a Vaudeville song, “Lazing on a Sunday afternoon“, or a lullaby " Dear Friends“ or Heavy metal, " Gimme the prize"? Punk was on the rise when this was recorded. Queen had taken a lot of flak from the critics for being too polished and complex. This song was recorded for the News of the World Album but written some time before. In the same studio, the Sex Pistols were recording Never Mind the Bullocks. Both Roger and Freddie are singing. Brian May and Steve Jones talk about this song on an interview on Jonsey's Jukebox within the last couple of years.

  • @poluxsaurus1454

    I normally wouldn't suggest this song, it is a bit extreme :D I could never identify who is singing, except in the chorus where Roger's voice is clear. This is their punkiest stuff ever, but News of the World isn't a punk album, it's just their most stripped down one. Special mention to the cover art -- best ever IMO! Roger's idea taken from the cover of a sci-fi magazine. They hired the original artist. On the magazine, the robot has killed a man, but here it has killed the band.

    Fun track :-) My understanding was that it was a swipe at a couple of bands. The Sex Pistols and The Sweet. The Pistols, for a bust up that occurred in a recording studio, and The Sweet for referring to Queen as a bunch of poseurs in interviews. Track always reminded me of a powered up version of The Sweet's track 'Action' (covered by Def Leppard). FYI... The first punk single released in the UK was in 1976 (New Rose by The Damned not Anarchy in the UK by the Pistols as is widely believed, by about a month), so this was just after the punk scene exploded.

And ROGER says the words, "HEART ATTACK" and "CARDIAC" at the ends of the long trios of lines that start with " SHEEEEEEEEEEER..." SHA and It’s Late are great rock songs on the album but also My Melancholy blues is a wonderful slow number.
    Queen very eclectic, more so on albums:
    Hard Rock: the Hitman
    1950’s folk: good company (worth checking out as all of the brass band is actually Brian’s guitar).
