Are Serial Killers Born or Made? | Hannah Briant | TEDxFrancisHollandSchoolSloaneSquare

  • Why do serial killers kill? Is it an innate thirst for blood that starts from a very young age? Or is it something that a pained and abusive childhood forces a person to become? Everyone has their own opinion on the matter, but these two case studies will make you think about what you thought you knew and that, in reality, it might not be a case of nature or nurture, but instead a case of both. Hannah Briant is a student at Francis Holland Sloane Square who plans to study criminology in university to explore discussions like this in a deeper way. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

made. regardless of mental deficiencies, which in my opinion, can be nurtured in the right direction(a good person). if one were born with or without mental issues, it’s the life experiences that shape who or what that person becomes.

Great speech. But, am I the only one annoyed by the constant yelling of kids on the background? I mean, really? Why do you even take kids to such events and, if you do, why don't you take care of them and teach them some manners? If it is annoying for me watching a recording, imagine the people who paid to be there and the presenters itself (some of which are already nervous). Anyway...

@Alan DL I appreciate your comment. I work in a public setting sometimes where I'm a court reporter at public hearings. One of my mantras is the only time I hate babies is when people bring them to a hearing. Who brings a baby and lets them coo and cry and laughs and thinks it's cute when people are speaking about important things at microphones and I'm sitting there trying to hear and take down verbatim everything that's being said. It's not cute. Bring your baby home and get a babysitter or stay home yourself

There seem to be several reasons a person becomes a serial killer. Damage's to the brain, violence in childhood. But, not all people who have had brain injuries. Or bad childhoods, become serial killers.

I'm so glad you spoke about Richard Ramirez, his childhood still makes me so sad for him. His father would punish him by tying him to a gravestone and leaving him overnight, I think that alone is enough to traumatize any child. I still believe "monsters" are created, whether born that way or not, take Jeffrey Dahmer for example. He might have been born that way but thanks to all the prescriptions his mother was abusing. Anyway, it is definitely a very interesting topic!

Just because he was traumatised doesn't mean he wasn't born a psychopath re genes. Plenty of people experience horrific abuse and don't become psychopathic

Raised by a single mother is your first indication. There is plenty of research about fatherless households and how this affects the children. It is in fact a predictor of long term violence! Let’s stop diminish how important the role of the father is in one family!

Difference between increased risk of criminality and psychopathy at serial killer level. Bad genes could mean dad doesn't hang around

Worth noting, I think, that Ramirez having several other members of his immediate family who were violent would suggest he was born with a predisposition toward it.

Shes reading from her notes that are displayed on a screen. Large public speeches are hard to do, especially while being recorded. She has her own written promps and photos displayed for her so she doesnt forget. Some are better at public speeking than others, but as someone whose done it before, I can say it is extremely stressful to make sure to reach every point under the time frame they are given.
