Totally agree, while all the technical aspects were outstanding there was just an emptiness to the whole film in terms of plot and message

Loved your review of the movie, it was very honest and made me feel less crazy lol. I think there is a plot in Hollywood to write terrible female characters under the guise of “feminism”. I grew up in the 90’s on Angela Bassett, Sigourney Weaver, Alfre Woodard, Jodie Foster, and Phylicia Rashad. All of whom, brought characters to life in brilliant performances. And all of them played women who had autonomy or fought and gained it through their roles in a particular film/show.
If we were to juxtapose the actresses roles I mentioned, to the last 3-4 years of female led movies we see PLOT sacrificed for more roles, which is actually corrosive to the “movement”.

Yess I agree! I feel like plot does get lost with trying to appease everyone at the same time

My main issue with this film is really the lack of consequences and stakes. I felt like this movie really shied away from those much darker and very real hardships that come with being a woman in the Victorian era. It was amazing to see Bella literally spit on societal norms and politeness politics. But the movie never delves into how bad things can truly be and to live in it. Bella breaking down into tears about the poor people she saw once, imo, didn't push that boundary. It was an impersonal and external viewing of the suffering of others. She never has to go through anything like that because Bella can chose whether or not she wants to put herself in a bad situation. And even when she's in danger, she gets away unscathed. The brothel was basically a funhouse for her, she got paid and got sex. Her motivations were very simple in that regard, which was fine for me. When the Madame explained to her that yes Bella would have to have sex with men she didnt like and that because of that fact, it would turn the men on even more, even that is danced around. That doesnt mean i wanted to see Bella get hurt in that way, but that is a very real thing that sex workers deal with. And i think not looking that reality in the face is what doesnt make, again imo, the sex scenes have any weight to them. It just made me feel like i was watching her have sex because its supposed to mean that she is being empowered. And yet, no power has really been taken away from Bella. She does as she pleases.
Honestly, i think if there was more of a risk involved with Bellas actions in polite society it wouldve added more meaning to everything happening around her and to her.
The sex scenes, were they very uncomfortable? Yes, we've watched her from when she could barely form a full sentence and to now having to sit and watch her get railed.
Is it possible that my American eyes and brain just arent accustomed to that? Absolutely, it's not an easy thing to really sit through, but i still could appreciate the nuances of her coming into her own sexual awakening. I wish we wouldve spent more time in seeing Bella develop more as a person. Seeing her and the French girls' relationship blossom. Seeing Bella at the socialist club and asking question or challenging her peers, male or female. Working with the poor she was weeping over. Things like that wouldve made me love the film even more. But alas, i thought we spent way too much time in the brothel, especially since she just left on a whim. Again, Bella never has to deal with any true hardship. She can just leave and move onto the next thing with no repercussions.

completely agree with the last paragraph. if the sexual awakening was only one aspect of the film, I would not have the same negative opinions about it. Instead, it hyperfocuses on it, but then says nothing.

I just dont understand why I as a woman am told not to "take it so literally" any time I have a criticism of this film? Because, like you, I do really enjoy the way it looks and the artistry of the set design and costumes. I would even go so far as to say that the simple idea of showing how women do like sex/promiscuity before they really get a taste of the patriarchy is a good idea, and is a feminist idea at its core. However, just because a movie styles itself like a comedy, and uses aspects of absurdity, does not mean it cannot be criticized, especially for showing sex scenes involving what is canonically a preteen-ish aged girl and grown men who fetishize her. And nb4 someone says that displaying something doesnt necessarily mean the film is endorsing that thing, I understand that. But as a woman who was taken advantage of at a young age, it doesnt feel good to watch it happen for 2.5 hours and have every single man around you praising its artistry and the freedom that Bella gets from it, when the kind of freedom theyre talking about is so much more than sexual.

      Oof, that's a great comment.
I really liked the movie, especially from a filmmaking point of view, with the costumes, set design, camera work, and everything. Had a great time watching it overall. But while I agree with "a movie displaying something doesn't mean it is endorsing it" I also think you have every right to show criticism towards it.
I think this movie brings up a very complex conversation, and there are great arguments from both sides. It IS very artistic and makes a lot of good commentary on "polite society" and how we're expected to behave in it, but it's also a bit exploitative and it focuses a lot on sexual freedom and not enough on many other aspects that are crucial to a woman's experience.
I believe this movie would have benefited from having more women involved in the production, but as it is, it's very clear that it was made by a man.

i tried to watch it but man it dragged a bit and i just couldn't really touch wat the movie wanted to show, i more or less was just forcing myself to sit thru the craziness.
Amazing visuals and direction but imo it was pretty shit.

Hey Woodley! I already commented previously but I also wanted to add the theme of adultification that has not been spoken on. When you are a woman of color you don't have to opportunity to "dilly dally" around the world because we are taught constantly to protect OURSELVES from the WORLD where in the flip side Bella was constantly being protectED from the world and it was HER doing and within her privilege to be able wander outside. unfortunately the rates of black girls going missing is astronomically higher than our white counterparts and it just went to show how as soon as she decided to walk outside there was someone always looking for her, she always had a hand to hold even if she didn't want it, and within that is a great privilege . When a white girl cries... traffic stops- im speaking specificly to the scene where she is crying looking down at the people below her and the black guy is comforting HER- and I think there is also something to be said about the privilege that is behind being so naive and how that translates to a lot of white traditional feminism- but thats a story for a different day I also don't love how the only black people in this film where the people that were either the sexual liberator or the mystic black guy- but thats also another conversation- anyway love love LOVE your videos! please keep it up with these fresh takes love to see it girl

I 10000000% agree being care free and whimsical as a black woman would be so much harder and look way different

I think the privilege is more about the money. I’m white snd I was taught the same things about safety and risk. It’s a dangerous world out there.
