- How I perfected the jab to win an Olympic Medal in boxing! The jab punch is the most important punch in boxing. It has helped me become an undefeated professional boxer. In this video, I will share with you how perfecting the jab has helped me win an Olympic medal, seven national titles, and a European gold medal. You will also get to learn what makes this punch so unique.

The jab is probably the first punch you learn in boxing. While it might seem like something for beginners, it's actually not. Quite the contrary, the jab is universally recognized as the most important punch in boxing.
The reason for this is that the jab helps you set up all your other punches. It enables you to find your range. If you follow my channel you probably already know that the jab and the left hook to the body are my favourite punches in boxing. I can tell just how hard a fight is going to be within the first 40 seconds of a fight simply from my ability to land a jab on my opponent.
I have found that if you can land a jab on your opponent, then you can land any other punch. The jab can not only get you in range but also get you out of danger.
I will be honest with you, perfecting the jab is not an easy task. You will need to put in a lot of effort. Like almost any other skill, improving your jab requires a lot of practice. However, you won't get good practising the wrong technique with your jab. I am going to show you how to practice with the perfect jab.
The first kind of jab I am going to share with you is the speed jab. In this video, you will also learn how to throw a power jab. It is very important that you master both the speed jab and the jab.
How to throw the perfect jab? You need to fully extend your arm so you can set up all your other punches. Not extending your arm means you can't get enough power on the jab. It also means that you are still in range for a deadly counter punch from your opponent. When throwing the power jab, you need to step into it to get the maximum power.
Throwing the speed jab, on the other hand, is mainly to frustrate your opponent. The secret here is to make it really fast. It keeps your opponent thinking and weary of your next punches.

What about if the jab makes your elbow hurt?
In my opinion it would be more useful to do shadow boxing with 0.5 dumbbell.!! For speed Jab 👊

What an excellent point about perfect practice.

Tony Jeffries Appreciate your response. Not yet but if I will go over there in future I know where to go for sure. 😉🥊 Keep up that great work and your positive attitude!
I appreciate that you took the time to explain why the jab is useful as a way of checking range and setting up combos. Simply knowing how to jab is not very helpful when you don't know why you should be doing it.
Excellent demonstration Tony. I agree the 2 best punches in boxing are a consistent jab and hooks to the body. That normally wears them down enough to throw a few hard straights to finish them off
Lead hooks? I’m new here
Its clear to see that Tony really has perfected the jab! That is one nice looking jab!
Thanks Tony. No one ever explained the jab that well to me and I was taught by many.
I am super impressed by Tony’s videos, so I like and comment on every video I watch. That’s my way of paying for these cool lessons.

The most helpful video on the jab. Much appreciated sir
Jabs is my strongest/favourite punch 👌
@Talha .7 Might mean the punch they're most confident with/ worked the most on
I use to be an Amateur boxer and I would use a a power jab in which I would kind of bend slightly in the knees and then leap forward and twist my torso while I threw the jab so that I was completely bladed and it was so powerful that I had some opponents and sparring partners tell me that it was just as powerful as any right or left hand straight cross that they had ever felt.
I like it mate and agree 👍🏼

excellent video, just what I needed to master my basics, thanks
Great work, thank you for this one! The Jab is one of the most underestimated tools... especially beginners try to come up with fancy endless combos. Best thing that could happen is, that a real pro breaks it down: respect the basics and it´s a load of practice comming up with it
Thank you for the tips
Thanks Tony for the video trying to perfect the basics
but one question upon impact should i keep my fist closed when throwing or clenched right upon impact?
When u throw it should be a tight fist mate
Thanks for posting quality videos. I'm new to boxing and just started working the heavy bag(I figured why not learn to box during covid). The first thing I noticed when throwing combo's is that my jab looses power so quickly. Practice practice I will.
Thank you 🙏🏼 and good look with your boxing
I'm a boxing fan. l saw 1 of ur vids today & became a fan. I like how you break everything down with the pros & cons. Which gives use an idea of what will work best for this or that or for me & my style of boxing. 🥊Thx 👍
I just hurt my right hand as well by throwing powerful hook on the heavy bag, now thanks Tony I think it’s time to make my jab stronger!
Great Jab Tutorial Coach Tony
"I hurt my right hand, so I worked on me left" bro same here. I broke my right wrist and all I did was jab and lead hook for about 6 weeks. needless to say, now my jab is quicker and stronger than my right cross/straight lmao

Hey Tony, thank you!
Perfect, i like the power jab.
Beautiful and simple and practice.
I always thought of my jab like a snake striking out. Elbow down, extend and retract. Telegraphing the jab with the elbow is the most important thing to work on from my experience.
I have had a similar mindset, which helps me in shadow boxing. But I feel like things fall apart when I actually strike a target, i e.. the heavy bag.
@@ericrood2308 the jab is never going to be as powerful as a rear handed punch because the hips are not involved so be patient. Practice and form will only lead to improve. Poor technique will only compensate for weaknesses.
Real cool gloves
First of all, amazing videos by you Tony Jeffries. Thank you for teaching your ways! I have been wondering about how to properly do a step back jab if an opponent is coming at me quickly and say i wanted another option besides a pivot the left. When i jab and go backwards, am i punching first and then stepping back immediately with my back foot and then bring the lead foot back to finish the movement? Or am i stepping back with my back foot first and then doing the jab and lead foot movement at the same time?
Good stuff sir! I teach the same jab extension and stepping principles to my karate and mma kids. No medals for standup fighting here, but I do like studying so I'm glad I found you. Take care!

I had no experience at all in boxing. I started watching your videos. Now I have others asking me for advice. The only advice I can really give with confidence is telling them to watch your videos. I really love the one that said something like "Look like a pro when hitting the heavy bag" Once I started using the information on that video, I really got a lot of compliments some even thought I was a pro boxer. LOL Thanks Tony because of you I am getting better and better. Oh! did I mention the girls said they really like my moves LOL. Again, Big thank you, Tony, you're the best!!!!!!

Hello mate great video as always. Can you do a video on how to take a punch in a boxing match and what you should do when you are hurt in boxing.
As always great video as always👊.
if you see the punch coming you can take it, that is if you use to being hit if not spar spar and spar the best way to get fit to fight as your training to fight in the ring is spar spar spar !!! , but still run. go on punch bag and skip .if You see the punch you can become kind of punch resistance as you body is ready to take it subconsciously ether by riding the punch ie rolling with the force or just gritting ur teeth and taking it , its the punch you dont see that knocks you out , Also the size of the gloves makes a big difference ..
Yes mate this is a good idea
Got the lgbtq gloves

Hey Tony, how about a video on the double-jab? I think people take it for granted but there's a lot of ways to do it wrong!

one cool variation is to bring your rear shoulder forward like you’re throwing a cross and since your shoulder is forward your left is loaded for you to step in and throw a hard ass jab
Real quick B! Can you throw it from different angles tho?
I use jabs till i find a good opening to use my right arm and it has worked well so far (I only did it in sparring matches)
