@@guezel6366 Well I didn't suggest that you should only resort to your footwork for defense. Good defense is multi-layered: you can't just slip a single punch and stop dead on your track because fighters fight in combos, most of the times it's slip - counter - move out or maintaining continuous movements of the head; so in that regard footwork is but another layer of a fighter's defense, albeit a very crucial one. Step back definitely the best move. I was friendly sparring a friend in a field who's never boxed. He just infinitely stepped away and out of range infinitely. Not much to be done without a ring. However, when there is a ring, you can't just step back every time. You definitely need good lateral footwork, cardio and evasive ability, especially against opponents who just wanna get into your face all of the time.
Moving back is my favorite defense as well. The problem is - if do it on a straight line and the opponent follows will be out of the ring. So move back and then sideways is the best
More so moving back is a good defence for one step and you better step sideways because moving backwards you're always slower than your opponent who would be moving forward.
Keep throwing jabs while you're moving back, sometimes that'll catch'em off guard. Either that or be Lomachenko and you don't have to worry about nothin: reflexes will do the job.
I drilled shuffling back with my son yesterday. It's a great way to get someone comfortable with dealing with straight punches to the face. It gives a novice a relatively safe option. Great work Tony!
100% bro... it can get you out of harms way, it can set up angles for counters and its the Delivery system for ur punches... you can have the fastest hands or the the hardest hitting hands but if ur footwork is bad, you wont be able to close the gap and Apply those hands.. Footwork gets you In to land and out of harms way when ur opponent counters
@@Tony_Jeffries me too. I've been boxing since 4 months and with your videos i want to compete, every day im getting better and my coach says it so aswell. it doesn't have to be highest level but i just want to enter a tournament. thank you for helping people all around the world
I would arguably say the best defense in boxing has to be the one where it best counteracts the type of punch your opponent is throwing at that point in time. The step back is a great overall move for them all, however you can only step back so far(without changing angles) in a ring. At one point you're gonna have to be in hitting range cause you also wanna score, in which case the defense would either be the slip, roll, duck, parry or block.
So, I've been into historical fencing (HEMA) and I can say from experience that the last two defenses are also the best ones. Leaning back or stepping back and out of your oponent's weapon is very good. A plus for the step back defense is that in fencing you can throw a cut to your oponent's arm because is very exposed. The school of bolognese straight sword uses a kind of similar stance than boxing: legs separated very slightly, knees bent just a little, and the rear heel is floting. Yes, it's very different from olympic fencing.
Good ring IQ is so tough to maintain while someone is hitting you at full speed. But it'd be cool to see a cause and effect video... Pressure fighter comes forward throwing... Counter puncher uses stiff jab and circles out... Pressure fighter knows this isn't a feint, so he is safe to parry the jab and come back with a right cross... Counter puncher can plan for this counter by slipping the right and throwing two left hooks. And that's just one sequence... and at amateur levels, people are sometimes just going to war, so the IQ goes out the window.
as a former amateur boxer, I always rolled, that was my go to defense , and I used it also to get in the pocket, worked fine for the level I was at . Then, few years after hanging the gloves, one of my best friends, a wrestler and bjj yellow belt, brought me to an MMA gym . Cocky as I am, and confident that I was still a decent striker, I went in and spar with one of the guys . And OOHH mann, was I dumb . My bad habit of rolling had me getting kneed so hard I could barely say my name .

Thanks again for the videos coach. I agree... the step back is what keeps many famous boxers in one piece (not getting hit) and is definitely the most useful style, of course still including the other styles as well is mandatory because at some point you need to be able to block well... still... step back as a primary tool is a pretty good call if your goal is success in the ring.
I think words are your best defense. Ive literally dodged/parried punches while diffusing the situation with questions and ended up with nobody being hurt. People can get frustrated and will be violent if they feel it's the only way they will be understood. Listen, respond, and avoid a lot of fights and make extra friends.

In kali for those who doesn't know we prioritize safety and footwork comes first , then the strikes using knives, sticks , swords , spear many weapons.
Brilliant! I brought my experience in fencing (I was an Open finalist as a youth) to boxing and you're right - footwork and getting away from your opponent was the number 1 in both. Awesome! I was doing the step back in Muay Thai to avoid kicks, I'd just jump back further so I wasn't in range. When I went to Boxing (I train in both) I was doing the same to avoid punches but wouldn't step back as far as I would in Muay Thai sparring. I didn't even know I was doing the top defensive move this entire time lol.
Honestly I feel like it's the most natural defence when starting out at least it was for me as a tall fighter. And you don't have to worry about slipping/rolling the correct way too
@@CDizzlePwnage Yeah & I usually don't slip/roll punches, I block/parry most of them if I'm not jumping back. I prefer to time/counter people over rolling/slipping. When I had to sparr my Muay Thai coach he also had a TKD background so he would sometimes spin when he kicked. He taught me to just jump out of the way when he did that to avoid them landing & it worked well, so I use this still. I just don't jump as far back in Boxing of course so I can still counter.
I was made to practice peek-a-boo and hated how slow my weaving felt in comparison to the other boxers with their hands down. I ended up liking the style, but not liking getting punched in the brain as you say. The force does transfer, and you make me think back about all that.

Aside going to other gyms or lessons, try some app, they got defense or defense/offense shadow boxing. Or when you follow shadow boxing set up some.defensive moves. Like after every 3, duck, or after a 1-2 shoulder roll. You will really improve muscle memory and feel if your footwork is good. If you do good footwork and tecnique, you will feel ready and loaded for other stuff, like after a good balanced 2, you feel loaded for a 3, a 5, a slip or another 1.
Hi, Tony! I've been watching your videos for a week and no sooner had I finished watching the first one than I subscribed your RUclips channel in the blink of an eye. I gotta a question for you with regards to defense: I agree that stepping back is the best defense; what would you use if your rival leads you against the ropes, though? Thank you and keep going! You're helping me taking up boxing!
No expert myself but someone mentioned above the step back is best coupled with the side step after to not only get you out of range of the boxer, but start developing momentum in one direction or another to get outside of your opponent and back into the inside of the ring.
The step back means you're no longer in range to throw some punches yourself so I'd say the slip and the roll are the best as long as you throw a combo straight after you do them
@@imperialgaurd276 that is true The stepback is the best because is part of the "in and out" footwork, we can stepback , and when they miss , we step forward and fire back 🤙🏻
Actually, you are. If they throw a straight they’re going to follow you right in range for your counter. If they threw a hook, they’re going to be slightly turned allowing you to immediately step in on their flank. When you step back you keep your neutral fighting stance which means you can throw any punch right after.
Thanks Sir! Your combination punches helped me hitting heavy bags in gym. Some people came up and asked me to teach them .. I said its easy Just watch Tony Jefferies and practice! 🤸
Oh yeah the classic “get the heck out of the way!” I like to draw out opponents and catch them on bad footing. Be aware of the ropes though or you’ll get bounced like a ping pong ball! Great video coach!
All the defences are right on the dime. But I have to comment on the block. I have used my punch turning it sideways to sneak into the wrist area of the block . It worked for me most of the time. Sir I do respect you and your skills you are an outstanding person and boxer. Thank you for your videos. You breakdown the move in a way to easy understand.
Amazing video as always Tony! Looking back now, your high guard blocking at 1:30 can be used with body mechanics to minimise impact. When someone throws a left hand from southpaw, you can twist your body to the left and pair it with a parry. Furthermore, stepping back to create distance with a parry and body mechanics can minimise impact, rather than taking the brunt force.

Thanks for the tip about fainting the parry. I have a sparring partner that always parries so its nice to be able to counter the counter.
We usually work on the bag at trainings so I cant much work on my defence, counter attacks and reflexes. Can you please make a video about how can we improve our defence, counter attacks and reflexes?
go to another gym if you want to fight
What the other guy said. If your gym isn't actually making you guys spar and actually box then you're at the wrong gym.
Try double end bag
move around the bag. practice moving
Man, your enthusiasm is a satisfaction for my soul.
Thanks for these videos!
Thanks mate! Means a lot 🙏🏻

The lean back is my favourite. I love weaving 😂🥊
Best you tube channel to improve boxing
Inspiring, having my first amatuer fight after lockdown you got any tips for fight night?
I have to agree with you. A clean retreat while still having options vs. the lean back which is a bit of a dead end.
I not only really like your explanations, but I absolutely adore your accent!
The step back means you're no longer in range to throw some punches yourself so I'd say the slip and the roll are the best as long as you throw a combo straight after you do them
You can also step back (to avoid a punch/combo) and step forward with a jab (and followup combo) I guess. Like fencing.
@@imperialgaurd276 that is true
The stepback is the best because is part of the "in and out" footwork, we can stepback , and when they miss , we step forward and fire back 🤙🏻
Actually, you are. If they throw a straight they’re going to follow you right in range for your counter. If they threw a hook, they’re going to be slightly turned allowing you to immediately step in on their flank. When you step back you keep your neutral fighting stance which means you can throw any punch right after.
I honestly can't believe this channel. It's just so perfect. Thanks for the videos.
I appreciate it ma man 👊
i like how you have to mention “olympic boxer” in the thumbnail too
Its a flex mate
people really getting mad at everything
@@seanc7990 Covid makes people mad it’s a side effect
Tony is like the Cary Kolat(Olympic wrestler) of boxing, real high quality videos
My coach always told me to be light on my feet.
Best boxing channel in the history of RUclips
More than half way through and so far its all “not my favorite defense” 😂
save the best for last 😄😄
I block punches with my face 😆🤪
Tony Jeffries i figured. I appreciate the humor and build-up in your videos💪🏽👍🏽
you mean "not ME favorite defense"
@@mardvkmedia3159 i stand corrected 😂
This is super energetic and clear. I've really enjoyed it!
Nice one Tony! I shall try that. I'm learning so much from your videos. Beginner of course, and doing great with my practice.
best way to avoid a punch.. don't be there
Mr Miyagi
Cobra Kai
You are one hell of coach and teacher. It’s Refreshing.
Thanks ma man, means alot
Totally agree Tony. What is even better (though much harder) is obviously combining all defences so as to not allow an opponent to discover a pattern.
Each punches and scenario got their best defense. but I agree thanks for sharing again mate
I really your enjoy your content, coach. I just started with an mma academy and need the extra attention to detail to my form. Thanks for the tips!
Great to hear! Thanks ma man, means a lot
Im glad someone says the truth even though its not flashy. The best defense is always taking a new position that cant be struck. A+ video.
Do you regularly box mate?
Yes and no. I do MMA and boxing is critical to my skill set, but I am not a dedicated boxer.
Thanks Tony, the pullback is the best.
I'm just starting boxing and I love these videos
Thanks Sir! Your combination punches helped me hitting heavy bags in gym. Some people came up and asked me to teach them .. I said its easy Just watch Tony Jefferies and practice! 🤸
Oh, yeah ....i agree with you, Tony...step back is the best defense in boxing..
👊
I been teaching my son threw this videos and so far it's working he's 6-0 in boxing
I agree with you 100%procent I came in boxing 6 months ago and the best protect I've ever use it's the footwork
Would love to see a video over strength and conditioning for boxers! Thanks for the videos!
Hands down best channel for boxing. Love it! Keep up the good work!!
I like that u added sir on ur video that... Slip is more effective in Punching Range.that's what i understand...I am 100% Agree.😎
Thank you for ur time, this tips give me more work to increase mi skills, very happy to watch new video everytime
Amazing video as always Tony! Looking back now, your high guard blocking at 1:30 can be used with body mechanics to minimise impact. When someone throws a left hand from southpaw, you can twist your body to the left and pair it with a parry. Furthermore, stepping back to create distance with a parry and body mechanics can minimise impact, rather than taking the brunt force.
always love your video man. Please Never stop teaching and sharing
Thanks Alvin - more videos to come
Great explanation on the philly shuffle video, helped me out in the gym
Thanks like that step back.
Tony Jeffries, what a fucking legend. Being a short guy, been fighting all my life, little boxing, martial arts and self taught fighting. 10 years as a Bouncer. My style has always been grab em, throw them into something or body crash them, always just been natural and easy for me i'm over 100 kg with a on switch. Only just discovered your videos or tutorials. Learning a lot Tony thanks. Gregg from West australia

Hey Patrick first of all thanks for watching the videos - You can do it mate everyday is a new experience.. Tomorrow you will be better
Side step Tony! Move out of opponent's range, stay in range for counter punch! Great video once more!
Happy to help ma man
All you have too do is remember all these things when your boxing sparring fighting etc thanks for the help ❤️😊👍
The best in my opinion,is to angle out of range.not straight back.

Footwork and distance and timing will always be the main defence for any combat fighting, reflexes speed head movement shoulder roll are all amazing to,but that only works when you have speed and athleticism on your side and experience!!,floyd mayweather,Mike Tyson,Muhammad Ali,sugar Ray Robinson and Leonard, roy Jones jnr, pernell Whitaker,Prince naseem hamed, etc, all these guys looked amazing because they had these abilities and skills, normal people don’t have it,
Im correct! Before you say its a Step Back, I First knew it Sir.... Coz that's my favorite Defense also. So simple but very effective, and i've seen lot of Pro. boxer using that "Step Back"
Your a Very inspirational and i've learned a lot from your Content...
I don't Fight but i want to learn for my own Protection outside,on the street.
Coz people now a days are out of control.
I need this tutorial .
I agree 100%.
You always hear, "Don't go straight back! Angle to the sides or 45."
If you are proficient at going side to side then it is harder to get forced into a corner.
Going around and behind the lead arm is more confusing to your opponent. But it is important to be proficient in both directions!
Hey Coach
Great video, your examples are awesome!!
Thanks so much

Agree! Maybe add clinch too. It is also a defense skill.
I will add that to my video list mate - this needs specific explanation thanks
i have to say u r realy great boxning teacher
Your content is always above average. Subscribed!
Great video. Fighters anywhere will tell you that footwork is your best friend in a fight. In JKD we learn footwork first and foremost because your feet gets you out of trouble. This is pure science
Thanks sir
My favourite is step back
