- A brief video of Sonic Crackers, an old Genesis prototype for, presumably, the game that would later become Knuckles Chaotix for the 32x. Most "levels" in this game follow the same format, and there are a number of bugs I try to show. It's clear that Crackers was merely proof-of-concept.
Edit in 2022 (13 years after upload): I occasionally get message from people indicating the video is paced slowly, is hard to follow, or seems to have other awkward elements. To preempt further comments in this vein, please note that this video was uploaded a very long time ago, back when RUclips had an external annotation feature. This had VERY extensive annotations that explained in detail a lot of what was going on, including the history of the "game," glitch setups, and a few other glitches not shown. Those annotations are now long gone, deleted automatically by RUclips when it removed the annotation feature.

Not only a prototype, but a tech demo for knuckles chaotix.
Ehh...this is Genesis software, not for the 32X, so it doesn't seem like a tech demo. I think what was going on here was someone used this as a pitch project, Sega wasn't interested in making another Sonic game for Genesis at the time (as the Saturn was due for release the following year after this was developed) and shelved it, but when they saw the 32X as potentially flopping they revived this game in order to get something Sonic-related on the platform while also having the devs switch up the graphics so Sonic himself wouldn't appear.
@@SolidSonicTH that's correct! Tom Kalinski mentioned this was supposed to be a fully fledged Sonic game for the Saturn, probably bigger than Sonic CD. It was over budgeted, delayed and it was eventually cancelled. When the 32X was coming out they were desperate for titles, and wanted to re-use what they had of Crackers. It was then downgraded to the 32X, which explains why this game feels so half-baked. Also Sega was highly protective of Sonic's reputation at the time, so they knew this would flop and decided to remove Sonic and Tails, allowing only a cameo appearance at the end (many other games had Sonic cameo appearances too). One of the executive managers had to beg to allow Metal Sonic to be in the game, which Sonic Team allowed as long as he was a secondary character. Quite interesting and truly a shame this had to be rushed and downgraded due to the problems between Sega of America and Sega of Japan.
Bear in mind the Genesis Sonic games were good mostly because of STI and how talents from both America and Japan were working together. It seems Crackers was a Japan exclusive plan that didn't go well.
When I played this as a kid, it used to freeze a lot and play terrifying music with broken text and I'm going to be irrationally scared of it forever

I've always loved the sprites of sonic and tails, sonic seems a little bit more purplish and his skin is more tan like how it was in adventure 2 and adventure dx. I hope to see a mod on a classic game where we can use sonics sprite from this prototype
The second level should be on the new game sonic mania because it looks so cool!

@segadc sa98 It wasn't changed, Crackers is simply a proof of concept before any work actually started. Knuckles was a very popular character at the time, so it made sense to release a game with his name on he title.

That idle animation for sonic was probably the best thing to come out of this
Surprised this didn't show the broken loop physics (you don't fall if you lose momentum, you just stand on the wall/ceiling). Definitely a very early build.
The arm sprites wrapping around isn't that strange: sprite coordinates have a range of 512 pixels. Normally games would just clip sprites that would be off-screen, but here it doesn't since players normally would be always visible (so they didn't bother with clipping), and this means that their sprites will repeat every 512 pixels.

For what it's worth, the original video had extensive annotations. This was uploaded long before RUclips eliminated them, and the video is a lot less useful because of that change.

That map that appears when you "die", i guess it would be the Overworld map, since in there, you have complete free movement, which is not normal with a Sonic Special Stage.
3:15 the design of this stage resembles "Circus Park" from "Shadow the Hedgehog", even the background is identical
Really love the overworld aesthetic and stages look much more speed and puzzle/vertical focused that what we got with Knuckles Chaotix: wonder what happened with the level design.

Fun fact: in the title, "crackers" is a misromanization of the word "clackers" because L's and R's are confusing to a Japanese perspective. And the clackers toy references this prototype and Knuckles' Chaotix mechanic.
They completely changed the game in the process though. The only mechanic they kept in Knuckles Chaotix was the joined characters mechanism. It would be good to see what folks think this might have turned out like if it had been kept as a Sonic game on the Megadrive.

I loved it. I think my favorite 32X game was kolibri because it was so beautiful.

And those 3d levels seems to be boss arenas. (In my opinion)

For some reason this prototype and an old mighty in sonic 1 hackrom were included
This game creeps me out. The way the giant, gray towers of the first attraction just stretch out into the lavender-blue background makes me feel like Sonic and Tails are in a liminal space. The absence of sound effects and bizarre physics and glitches give me the willies too. If anyone tries to make a Sonic creepypasta in this day and age, they should make it similar to Crackers.
I wish Sonic Team would return to some of these unfinished concepts from the 90's and make them a reality.

It only says that on the ROM header for the game. We can't know for sure that it was meant to be called that.
The Devs confirmed this one button control type (jump, hold AND grab) was too complicated and it was decided to be split into 3 buttons. The command layout #3 from Chaotix uses this exact mechanic from Crackers.

I found the ROM for it, but the game crashed when the A in SEGA appeared on screen.
Edit: I downloaded 3 different Sonic Crackers ROMs and they all had the same problem
press start at the sega logo before any letters come or spam start
The reason why it crashed is because the game's audio is handled by the Z80 processor and if it can't find a music track to play quickly enough (which includes the sega screen) the game will lock up. This issue mainly happens on real hardware and emulators besides Kega Fuzion I believe.
It would have been nice if Isolated Island's music was in this too.

Had a small play at this last night again for old times sake. Always sad to see a sonic game unfinished. No matter how old it is, it would have been interesting to see how it turned out in the end.

What would be really neat is if someone could actually make this complete. It CAN be done, you'd just disassemble it, extract the various mechanics and insert them into a disassembled Sonic 1, 2 or 3 ROM, rebuild and there you go! I don't know how exactly these disassemblies are done, but folks are clearly able to do that sort of stuff as it's how many of the advanced ROM hacks are made.
It exists already, it's called Knuckles' Chaotix.
Indeed, though it'd probably be easier to hack Chaotix and go from there.

@sehlinger2003 the sega 32x was made and had many good games to it. It even had doom (it sucked). Knuckles chaotix was let out. Search it on youtube.(here)
