I got Ryan's recently book on courage on Audible but was somewhat disappointed. It leans heavily into COVID fears and it is obvious he doesn't like Trump. I'm fine with him on either of those issues (he has a right to an opinion) but found his slant on both issues to distance the overall message of the book.
Ironic, because like him or not, Trump demonstrated tremendous courage standing up to the Washington power structure, the media elites and the Military Industrial Complex. Also, ironic because hating Trump and going along with COVID Fear are the “In Thing”, not the Courageous thing.

It's hard when you use examples of people ''who have done great things'' e.g. kennedy, king, thatcher but in many other ways were devoid of moral fortitude. I know it is hard to find examples of people who are moral through and through - even or especially in politics, religion, business. Almost every high profile person - you scratch the surface and find a rotting, maggot ridden core. My grandfather is the only man I can think of who did great works, was kind AND absolutely, irresolutely moral in his private life. No cheating, no faking, no weaknesses of character. Try to find men like that to use for ''courage'' that leads to good character. None of the men you used had that.

When I’m there, and in the mountains in general, I’m at peace. The walks focus you on the here and now, the rocks tell a story of ancient history, ground you, bring perspective and help to remind you that all those little stresses and worries are pretty insignificant. Taking a walk is definitely a teaching that resonates!
I definitely wouldn’t put Colin Kaepernick on the same level as MLK; that’s just factually incorrect and morally wrong. Kaepernick was a guy who comes from privilege, was a starting quarterback, and then when he started to flounder he started doing something based on incorrect information (police kill blacks an alarming, biased rate). It was his actions that inspired another misinformed, inept NFL player (Marshawn Lynch) to sit for the American national anthem but stand for the Mexican national anthem; because, as you know, American police are so much worse than Mexican police, many of whom are in the pockets of the cartels and do the bidding of the cartels. None of that is heroic or principled. It’s misinformed and part of a broader movement to dismantle our society into something authoritarian. That is not courage; that is cowardness.

I don't know anything about Colin Kaepernick except that he kneeled during the national anthem to express an authentic political concern years ago, and people still haven't stopped giving him shit for it. Just the brief mention of his name in this video caused a disproportionate number of comments from people who seem to really, really hate his guts. Sounds like a fine example of courage, regardless of whether or not you agree with his politics. Courage exists beyond contingent political concerns and can be expressed by anyone.

Life *IS* based upon the good and evil spectrum. Courage and cowardice are mixed in qualities as well, but the good men of the world have the love of God within them and will have the courage to do what is right. Having a good (Godly) heart is conducive to having courage, not the other way around.

It's hard when you use examples of people ''who have done great things'' e.g. kennedy, king, thatcher but in many other ways were devoid of moral fortitude. I know it is hard to find examples of people who are moral through and through - even or especially in politics, religion, business. Almost every high profile person - you scratch the surface and find a rotting, maggot ridden core. My grandfather is the only man I can think of who did great works, was kind AND absolutely, irresolutely moral in his private life. No cheating, no faking, no weaknesses of character. Try to find men like that to use for ''courage'' that leads to good character. None of the men you used had that.

It seems timely and in line with my own philosophy of "Amor Fati" that I stumbled upon this video today. "Fortes Fortuna Iuvat" is the tattoo on my right arm that I got while studying abroad in London (or Londinium as it was known to the Stoics at the time). This video and this concept has never been so important today in our current and turbulent social, economic, and political climate.
I hope that "courage calls" those with power and influence today, specifically in government and big business.

Nice shot of Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites as the background image of the titles. For me, The Dolomites are one of the most beautiful places to walk and be surrounded by the splendour of nature. When I’m there, and in the mountains in general, I’m at peace. The walks focus you on the here and now, the rocks tell a story of ancient history, ground you, bring perspective and help to remind you that all those little stresses and worries are pretty insignificant. Taking a walk is definitely a teaching that resonates!

I definitely wouldn’t put Colin Kaepernick on the same level as MLK; that’s just factually incorrect and morally wrong. Kaepernick was a guy who comes from privilege, was a starting quarterback, and then when he started to flounder he started doing something based on incorrect information (police kill blacks an alarming, biased rate). It was his actions that inspired another misinformed, inept NFL player (Marshawn Lynch) to sit for the American national anthem but stand for the Mexican national anthem; because, as you know, American police are so much worse than Mexican police, many of whom are in the pockets of the cartels and do the bidding of the cartels. None of that is heroic or principled. It’s misinformed and part of a broader movement to dismantle our society into something authoritarian. That is not courage; that is cowardness.
