      I love your stoicism videos but I highly, strongly suggest you don't have any background music (or at least severely lower the volume but I would much prefer no music). The background music is distracting and too loud and frankly I believe background music is unnecessary. I firmly believe people want to get information/hear you speak rather than hear background music. Especially since Stoicism can be a little dense. Also in some videos, your voice has an echo especially when you do videos in your office. I don't know if you wear a clip-on mic but that might help. But yeah the mic quality has room for improvement. I listen to a lot of history youtube channels and podcasts so I'm a little spoiled by good recording mics by those content creators. Also I really like when you have captioning on your videos. It's like I can absorb your words visually as well via hearing.

    I was in the military for 10 years where I excelled for really the first time in my life. After getting out, my life became listless and meaningless. It wasn’t until I realized that my strength comes from living a disciplined routine and leaning into the voice in my head that tells me to do the uncomfortable things. By actively being diligent and disciplined, I have found my drive again. I realized that I haven’t even scratch the surface of my potential yet. So many of my values and standards were stoic in nature but it really wasn’t until listening to you and reading your books did I understand how to live by them. Even though the future is always uncertain, I have never been so excited to see what results occur when I put forth total effort into everything I do. Thank you Ryan!

One of the lasting memories I have is, it doesn’t matter if you are a street sweeper or a surgeon, your work ethic should be the same. Always do your best work! I have a law - "Having Expectations decided how you feel. "
    See our brain is a machine of expectation through which our intelligence arise. If you look closely, intelligence expects an outcome to determine the course of next action.
    So keep low expectations - you or any other can't control their external environment and hence the results may not always be as expected. Failed Expectations lead to anger, anxiety, depression, hate, doubt, lack of trust, etc.
    Which brings me to my Second law - "Value what your experience and manage it"
    Because at the end of the day that would determine it as a good or a bad day. Try to remain productive and satisfied, cherish your victories even if things were difficult due to the external, remember you are doing your best however successfully. Don't stress at your failures because at least you tried. One don't fail unless on tries. You did it and at the end of a month you better say "It was a great month".

    A daily routine, to me, has been a very elusive thing. I’ve tried for years and years to develop and stick with one to no avail. Having adult ADHD does not help either. The worst is when I’m in between jobs (which happened recently) or have a day off. Any free time, even if it’s planned out and scheduled, falls apart, or I just struggle thinking of something to do and stay motivated. I’m not saying Ryan didn’t have to work hard at his routine but I do believe making one and following it comes easier to some folks.

      @John Taylor...thank you for your clarity, concerning where you are on life's journey. I have ADHD, too, so I know how you "feel". Please consider a simple daily plan, as Ryan suggests. I, at 7 decades, am working on how to growing into public speaking, with "Original Transcon RR history" as my passion. That daily purpose will knaw at me, 'til I stop being "Perfect", and am willing to make mistakes. ADHD, etc., feeds on the aforementioned "Perfection", as you and I know. Awakening and a walk helps immensely, in our quest for inspiration. I hope you see a way to deal constructively with your challenges, and share your fears and triumphs with us, here. A suggestion: get a Stoic's journal, to write in, and use it. The key to growth, as Marcus Arealius lived, are positive habit-building everyday habits. Thanks again, John Taylor.

    "Say, "No." A lot." Why does this become more challenging as I get older? (Played hockey for 22 years. Went to the gym, was on the ice every day, night, and even went to 3 different schools. All based on chasing a dream to play in NHL/Olympics. Don't regret it at all.) My point here is that I was able to say NO to "any thing" or "any one" and did so blindly, without hesitation or anxiety, all throughout my youth, teens, and twenties (was it because I was so devout re: my cause? ), it just seems more difficult as I get older.

But he didn't have to drive to work, then work for 8 hours, take care of his own children, give them bathes, Make everybody dinner and clean the house, and then work unpaid overtime because he's a teacher. Didn't he have servants?

    I've always been good at waking up early and working out every day, audio books listening for at least two hours in the morning. But wow, in the afternoons when I come home from work I love to waste time watching tv. I'm up at 3:00 am, I workout 30 to 45 minutes, eat a healthy breakfast and vitamins, then I walk to work 2 miles at 5:00 am 5 days a week. Walk 2 miles back home after work, then I'm a vegetable till I turn in at night. I'm 60 years old and have a very ambitious vision for the rest of my life, but holy cow I am so lazy when I get home. Any suggestions? With all the email and questions you must receive it would surprise me if you got back to me, I certainly wouldn't hold it against you. And even I know the answer is already in me. More introspection and discipline is needed. Love your books and your video vignettes of wisdom.

    • @jorgeromera3861
      @jorgeromera3861 3 года назад +4

      I agree. And it's not only a matter of free time but also of energy. In the 1930s a Wigan Pier coal miner had to crawl up to three miles, underground and in the dark, just to get to his seven and a half hour shift of backbreaking work. After that, he crawled back.
      When you lead that kind of life it is not easy journaling first thing in the morning.

    • @questshots4189
      @questshots4189 3 года назад +6

      I like the guy and all, but some folks need to check if their work shift changed when they wake up at 5am and don’t have 1.5miles of personal property to stroll on for an hour before hourly wage work starts, and their day job hasn’t made them millions for over a decade to have time to philosophize on the side and write a chapter mid day, and their personal assistant/spouse does not like it if you tell them you are overworked if they ask you to help with 3 things, and after 12 hour shifts you fall asleep face down on your journaling. Not saying he hasn’t had hard times, but didn’t get a huge sense of suffering from TedTalks and Google lectures being one of 2 items on your calendar for the day after the 1 hour stroll. I still like the stoic philosophy tenants for trying to improve life wherever you are, but certain life luxuries make it easier (and do not seem very stoic).

Iv noticed alot of people like to intimate me cuz I'm a small person. I'm only 5.6 for a man. About 200. Alot of people are taller and always picked on me my whole life. I'm almost 40 now I'm just curious is to when it will stop for people picking on me. Cuz I stopped caring along time ago. People reject me especially woman do. Cuz of how I look like. Witch tells me they are shallow people. Someone always has to put me down to make themselves feel better. Then the next time I see that person I try to not talk to them at all cuz the same thing always happens.. I have used some of your tactics and they work for some people. Not for everyone. But wanted to say thanks for helping me I really appreciate it. I can sleep better at night.

    One of the things you said that turned me over into appreciating each and EVERY single day is when you said “with each and every single day you GET to do….rather than you HAVE to do.
    This has changed my outlook to enjoying each and every day. Enjoying and appreciating that I GET to do the things that are important to me…hugging my kids, enjoying my morning stroll, the opportunity to go to work, the gift of being alive.
    In other words, I no longer take each and every day I GET to live for granted.

    Once upon a time I did a very similar thing .... This awakened me to how much I am self loathing and this lead to more self loathing .... That lead to my awareness of how inadequate my mind set is toward happiness. Depression Avolition and Anhedonia reigns today....flow is supplanted by force.... love is supplanted by hate. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TAKE.
