    Why is it so hard for people to understand the difference between veganism and WFPB? Being one does not imply the other.

    • @michaels4255
      @michaels4255 6 лет назад +2

      People just haven't been taught. Most people know at most only that vegans do not eat animal flesh, eggs, or milk (other than human mother's milk in infancy), so they assume that to be the definition of veganism and have no way of knowing that it is the result of veganism. The word veganism was coined and officially defined by the original Vegan Society as "the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals." The other problem is that there is no simple, memorable, one word term for "whole foods plant-based diet," so it is easy to slip into using the term vegan has as "shorthand" even though it is not accurate.
      Personally, I prefer the term "practicing herbivore."

    • @michaels4255
      @michaels4255 6 лет назад +2

      Maybe WFPBers should start calling themselves "Edenites" in commemoration of Genesis 1:29
      And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
      Or: Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

    I am so impressed with the whole food/plant based diet movement out of the United Kingdom. Keep up the important work. As a nurse practitioner I see these medical problems from the foods people eat. Like Dr. Claper says in What The Health: "It's the food!"

  • @egalitarianvegan8806
    @egalitarianvegan8806 6 лет назад +18

    I am glad that T. Colin Campbell had a chance to show how biased Dr. Yeo's opinions are. The whole foods plant based diet will always have to defend the the facts, and the truth until the animal foods industry dies from it own inefficiencies, cruelty, contribution to climate change, deforestation, pollution, and the huge amount of disease that it causes.

    • @michaels4255
      @michaels4255 6 лет назад +2

      If flesh eating dies out, I think it will be a very slow process. First, the livestock industry is probably the most profitable branch of agriculture, so the supply side will not easily go away, and its profits will always give it political leverage. Second, humans are status-obsessed creatures. Third, because it consumes more resources, animal flesh will always be more costly than plants, and the greater inherent cost of animal foods make them high status foods by default. Paradoxically, some of the worst externalities of flesh-eating make it more likely, not less, to be perpetuated. Fourth, Plato and Aristotle already understood 23 centuries ago that plants were healthier and less resource intensive than animal foods, yet dead animal consumption has not died out. Even earlier, Pythagoras was the first "ethical" vegan, and vegetarians/vegans were known as Pythagoreans for many centuries, yet his example did not spread. The Bible presents plants as man's original diet, and pre-Enlightenment Christians held that animal flesh consumption excited man's carnal passions, and any animal with a spine was abstained from during Lent and similar periods, yet consistent abstinence from animal flesh remained rare even among very pious believers. So spread the word, but do not wait breathless with anticipation.

    • @michaels4255
      @michaels4255 6 лет назад

      "any animal with a spine", more accurately, mammals, poultry, and any sea creature with a spine, however reptiles and amphibians could be consumed even during Lent, probably because these types of animals were likely to be consumed by the poor. Shellfish was also not considered a luxury food when these rules were adopted.

I have lost over 150lbs so far and reversed pre-diabetes as well as getting rid of my cholesterol meds and reflux meds along with reducing my fibromyalgia medication from 8 pills per day down to 2. I attribute all of this to my plant-based lifestyle, whereas my husband says, like this yo-ho doctor that Klaus was interviewing, that my improving health came from the weight loss and not from my lifestyle. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you put this guy in his place Klaus!!! Well done!!

      They always say that! I lost weight from a non plant based diet and still had health issues. It didn't get me off my pain meds, my BP meds, I still had high cholesterol which my Drs said they should get better. Then I slowly gained the weight back plus some. I watch McDougall and though we'll, it can't hurt! I lost 75lbs the first yr and within months I was off BP meds, pain meds, and 6 months later I was off cholesterol meds! My other health issues started to reverse! No other diet ever did this!!!! I lost a total of 100lbs and am finally at a healthy weight and feel great!

    So I was a new Vegan when this came out in the early part of last year. I had only spent 3 months studying (all sides) the WFPB diet. I am a lay person and I saw through Yeo immediately and sent off my first and only complaint to the BBC. This is easy, it's something all Vegans and supporters of a WFPB diet have a duty to do. It costs nothing, only 20 mins of your time but the stronger our voice the more positive impact for our planet, the animals and human health. Thank you Klaus for conducting (as usual) such a professional interview - it could not have been easy...

    Great work, Klaus. I just have to say, though, that just because one calls themselves "vegan" doesn't mean they can't be just as concerned with health as someone who calls themselves "plant-based". I consider myself a (mainly) whole foods plant-based vegan. I started this journey for *both* health and ethics. One is no more important to me than the other. I love animals, and that is the motivator that allows me to "stay the course" and remain vegan. But I also am determined not to become a statistic (another cog in the BigPharma /BigMedicine wheel), so I eat as "clean" as I can (save for some minimally processed stuff). "Progress not perfection" is better for me on the way toward eventually becoming a 100% plant-based vegan (I hope!) And as I've said before, I love your accent. Don't ever lose it. 😊 xx

    Klaus, your patience and composition is an impenetrable barrier against deception. I admire how you managed not to lose your cool.
    RE: Unchangeable Carnist bias:
    “We often assume that only vegans and vegetarians bring their beliefs to the dinner table. But the only reason many of us eat cows but not dogs-for example, is because we do have a belief system when it comes to eating animals. When eating animals is not a necessity-which is the case for many people in the world today-then it is a choice. And choices always stem from beliefs. So what my research uncovered is that there is an invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals. And I named that system carnism.” - Melanie Joy, The Secret Reason We Eat Meat
    “There is a tendency-overall-to grossly underestimate the human potential for self-deception, even among critical thinkers and sceptics. We all want to view ourselves as rational beings, but that is just the greatest self-deception of all. If you think [that] you are not biased, and that you cannot rationalize a completely erroneous belief, then that is just the greatest bias of all, that’s the master bias-the one that can undo all of your critical thinking skills.” - Steven Novella, Your Deceptive Mind - Lecture 24: Critical Thinking and Science in Your Life (06:10)

    Klaus, this was a completely brilliant piece of work you did here.
    In particular, it needs to be highlighted that you clearly managed to get him comfortable and confident speaking fluent BS for what in this edited clip is nearly a full first ten minutes, but right when you drop the "pharmaceuticals" question on him from about 9:29, he suddenly, for the first time, breaks his constant eye contact, looks up, swallows, looks up again to the right, then responds by hardly meeting your eyes for the next couple of minutes, and during that time offers several false starts to his sentences, verging on a sudden development of stammering, and all that on top of sudden inclusion of an "ahh" and an "umm."
    And is that a blush, or a flush, his suddenly extra red face is sporting..?!
    Gosh, what interesting body language.

    It was a terrible documentary. The kind of crap that people ask you if you watched to try and undermine your efforts in moving to a healthier lifestyle. That program does more harm than good. I feel sorry for many involved who were somewhat tricked into taking part unaware of the bias agenda. 🤬

    This was so great, you have such a quick mind to catch his words and relate them to the 'facts' that we understand and ask him to answer. Please keep after people like this and keep us informed! I support Dr. Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn, their findings are so clear and exciting, keeps me focused on why plant based eating is so important!

    To argue with a character like Yeo is a total waste of time for a serious scientist like Dr. Campbell. Yeo's ignorance and dishonesty does not deserve a response.

    I thinks it's good to challenge this kind of thing, especially if someone has been misrepresented. Though I don't like the trend of overly focusing on an rival researcher, dr or person's potential bias. I think it's best to stick to data and evidence as much as possible and use the principle of charity, attack a rival's best arguments. I don't think this over emphasis on bias is a very persuasive strategy. I think it'll only play well with committed vegans or plant based eaters.

    I greatly appreciate Dr. Campbell's distinction that any diet, including veganism, is not inherently healthy. That his critically peer-reviewed published research findings led him to a whole-food plant-based diet.

    The genetic aspect is interesting. What does it mean to have X percentage of heritability? That the outcome is fixed and can not change it or that it's a statistical representation of what we see usually turns out to be the case? If it's just the ladder and you can change for example obesity outcomes by diet, information, exercise then I would argue that it's not heritable at all, or that the concept of heritability in this context is misleading and counter-productive.

    Klaus do you have a link to the updated 2014 Esselstyn study cited, which has a larger sample size? how large was it? why are there so few studies of this nature? Seems to me it ought to be possible to prove whether or not weight loss alone is the cause of reversal of heart disease. i don'tget why science can'tput this question to rest definitively.

      +Sunny, who has a financial incentive to fund this research? Not drug makers, not physicians, not the ag industry, they all have incentives *not* to fund it. Politicians get campaign donations and sometimes other perks from these industries, and saving the taxpayers' money has never been a high priority with them, so they have no incentive to fund the research. That leaves the private health insurance and life insurance industries. Maybe someone should bring these discoveries to their attention, or maybe they are owned by some of the same companies that own industries that want nutritional remedies suppressed. Conflicts of interest abound.
