It’s one of Scorsese’s best crime films. You must infer and pay attention to the subtleties of DiCaprio’s performance.

Midlevel mentioned that he did not like the romantic relationship that forms with Bills therapist. Well, She is his only emotional outlet. His only connection to the real world and the only light he has in the world of brutality that he is immersed in. DiCaprio’s performance is subtle and Amazing.

DiCaprio’s performance is raw and unhinged. The violence he experiences as an under- cover cop begins to eat-away at his soul. And his performance shows how vulnerable he becomes as the movie progresses.

This release was probably the most subtle ones I’ve seen. To me it had a very old school look and the color scheme is very nice, it made Boston look like a character. The movie itself is probably the least Scorsese movie ever, he didn’t wanna make it look like his other films, especially with the stacked cast.

  • @jjchmiel78

It may be a solid release, but based on your opinion of not a huge upgrade in picture quality and being only an upscale and then throw in the fact of no upgraded audio, makes it a prime candidate to just wait. I might pick it up if it hits $10 but nothing to get excited about to pay full retail. Must be taking a lesson from Disney or Cameron. Do a cheap and quick "upgrade" to take advantage of the fans instead of giving it the love and care to match it's iconic status.

Somebody agrees with me, the Departed is not a great film. It's not even Scorsese's best. I do enjoy the Departed as a crime thriller. The problem with this film it's not cleverly written nor dramatic. It's a remake of a Hong Kong action film Infernal Affairs and it shows. Both films share the same fast paced plot. I do like how the villain Frank Costello is based on Whitey Bulger. The plot is similar to the real life character and his relationship with law enforcement. I didn't like that Martin Scorsese won best Director for this one. Although well deserved he's done much better work. It's as if Scorsese was just hired to direct the Departed. It doesn't seem like a project that was his own.

    Some things...
1.I think the reason that Nicholson character has over the top scenes mixed with the more serious scenes is because the implication seems to be (as the film moves along) that he Costello) is losing his mind. I'm pretty sure that Billy mentions it a few times in the film. That's how I've always felt about his character.
    2. I think when people don't love a movie as much as many other people and the movie is a decade old or more people tend to just write off others love of a movie as "nostalgia".. I think it's too easy of a "go to" explanation sometimes to basically say that a movie is not really as good as people say.
That said, I agree that Nicholson and Wahlberg are the most entertaining in the movie. I think the movie is a 4 star movie, but not a 5 star. Plot is not as involving as it seems like it should be.
The movie does have a great soundtrack and some awesome lines and stuff.

I like The Departed. I’ve been very much looking forward to a 4K release. I got the 4K slip from GRUV last Monday in the mail. It’s not the best Scorsese film but definitely in my top 5. No, it’s not an original film. I know it’s a remake of the foreign film Infernal Affairs. I just think it gets knocked by Scorsese fans because it’s the one for which he won Best Director and Best Picture Oscars. I think that’s unfair. It’s a well-made film that just went up against a weaker Best Picture field in 2007. The other four films nominated that year were Babel, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Queen.
IMHO, it was a weaker field than what Goodfellas went up against in 1991. That would be Awakenings, eventual winner Dances With Wolves, Ghost, and The Godfather Part III. Have to say two gangster films (one more modern and one more classic style) have to have split the vote amongst Academy members making way for Dances With Wolves to sweep most of the major awards. That was definitely a movie of its time and moment that just hasn’t aged as well as Goodfellas or even Ghost. As for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, you could have the same argument. Just stronger competition that year. Well, I do think Raging Bull got robbed in 1981 but that was just more about politics with the Academy. The Elephant Man, Coal Miner’s Daughter, winner Ordinary People, and Tess were the other nominees. You just knew a nominated film by a very popular actor at the time making his directorial debut would win. Which ironically happened again to Scorsese with Goodfellas ten years later. Taxi Driver was up against All The President’s Men, Bound For Glory, Network, and eventual winner Rocky for Best Picture in 1976. We all know how much of a cultural impact Rocky has had.
In summary, The Departed only feels overrated because it won Best Picture and Best Director in a relatively weak field the year it came out. IMHO, of the films nominated that year it was the best. Just not Scorsese’s best when you look at his entire filmography. The same could be said for Schindler’s List. It’s the only Spielberg film to win Best Picture, but IMHO Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T.: The Extraterrestrial are better. Just enjoy the movies because awards all have to be put into the context of the year those movies were released and the movies they were nominated against. The passage of time can be very unkind to some films as far as how they hold up.

Jack Nicholson was having a career resurgence in 1997? I guess you’ve never seen such films as ‘Batman’ (1989) where he played ‘The Joker’ or ‘A Few Good Men’ and ‘Hoffa’ in 1992 or the sequel to ‘his Best Supporting Actor winning role with ‘Terms of Endearment’ in ‘Evening Star’ or ‘Mars Attack’ (where he played ‘The President’) in 1996. I hadn’t realized his career had gone downhill in the few months between the latter two movies and ‘As Good As It Gets’ in 1997.
I can appreciate your argument when it comes to Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg, but it strains all rational credibility when it comes to Nicholson.
Yes, he did win another Oscar for ‘As Good As It Gets,’ but that doesn’t equal “a career resurgence.” Good try, I guess…
